Been playing this lately and all I can say is wow... Simply wow. Amazing game and so underrated. Easily just as good and maybe even better than Ocarina of Time.

Of course you could say they're a bit hard to compare because the gameplay is so different, but is it really? It feels almost a bit like a 2D OOT and I honestly had just as much fun playing it. A true underrated classic.

More like the adventure of STINK

I'm inclined to agree, it's definitely better than ALTTP which was basically a downgrade.

Are you enjoying having the expansive overworld to explore? (this is just a small fraction of it)
>>
>>12671060
My favorite Zelda game. Kinda wish they experimented more with that style of gameplay.
>>
the one thing this game really has over others is the worldmap is more interesting. Even the classic zelda games never ventured to have multiple continents. But let's not lie, the sidescrolling combat is inferior and the magic is out of place
>>
>>12671129
It definitely has one of the better and more interesting overworlds and exploration aspects.
>>
>>12671142
>the sidescrolling combat is inferior
Wat games even have better sidescrolling combat?
>>
>>12671060
Pure kino

My second favorite 2D Zelda after Zelda 1
>>
>>12671142
I love Zelda II but its world map is the least interactive one in any Zelda game I'm familiar with, and thus the least interesting. And the combat is... superior, not inferior. So maybe your brain glitched there? I agree that the magic could be made a lot more interesting.
>>
>>12671060
It's almost like they should have just stopped here because once you really start playing this game, you don't want to go back to the others.

not even 20 posts in this copy/paste bait thread and over half of them are the op talking to himself trying to hook shitposters

STFU. This game defined what a proper Metroidvania was before even those games got the formula dialed in.

yes, I already played spiritual successors, aggelos and phoenotopia, if that's what you mean.

This. Are there any other games like Zelda II?

>Amazing game and so underrated.
When did people start hating zelda 2? As a kid everyone loved it.
What happened?
>>
>>12671060
I don’t think it’s a bad game, but I don’t like side scrolling in a Zelda game. That said, the two NES games combined laid so much groundwork for ALttP and beyond.
>>
>>12672864
Seconding this, any similar games?
>>
>>12674834
>>12676468
Battle of Olympus and Rambo both play very similarly.
>>
>>12674838
People got into the franchise with later games and Zelda 2 stands out by being very different from all the others in an immediately noticable way.
Also it's too hard for zoomies.
>>
Couldnt finish it as a kid, still liked it enough to play and replay up to that point often enough. Pretty sure all I missed was 1 magic meter upgrade and subsequently thunder (found the thunder teacher).
>>
>>12676481
Yeah, but what you’re saying is also why it gets overrated. The JRPG style overworld, side scrolling and leveling system are strange departures from the first game. I get that they were still experimenting back then, but it’s easy to understand why a lot of people bounced off of Zelda II.

To what? I enjoy the sidescrolling combat in this game more than any other I can think of on the system.

>But let's not lie
Why did you prepend an unsubstantiated sentence with fluff like this?

Actually, it's the combination of overworld map and the really great sidescrolling combat that makes this game incredible for me. It's some of the best combat I've played in a 2D game, it's fast and responsive with a great difficulty curve, punishes you for spamming and rote formulaic play and rewards careful response timing. It effortlessly captures the feeling of "dueling" that more modern games can't accomplish with layers of lockons and ripostes. It's quite honestly the perfect system for the kind of game this is.

Youtube 1st-gen ecelebs. That's literally it. Zelda 2 is one of the best-selling NES games of all time and has always been widely appreciated. The differences from the first game were noticed but not harped upon. It was always a lauded, beloved title. Then Youtube "nostalgia critics" came along and made a career out of ridiculous angry face-mugging for the camera and screaming and throwing tantrums, and a generation of midwits and underaged absorbed their opinions as if it were historical truth. It's the kind of thing non-thinkers immediately latch onto because there's a subversive "thrill" in being part of the group "in the know" that uhh akshually good thing was bad. Things haven't really changed in decades, the Pareto majority lacks intellectual, emotional, or moral substance so they ally with non-pinions like this to stand out and feel valid.

Question:
Never, ever played a single Zelda game. Been in fact postponing trying since covid.
Which game - one, specific title - should I give a try to "get" it?
The sort of way how people are told Tomb Raider 3 or Settlers 2 are the ones they need to try out to get the full gist of the series in one go, rather than playing all the titles in it.
>>
>>12678287
What kind of stupid question is this?

If you don't feel the urge, the draw, the allure to play yourself, why do you need to be told how to "get" it? You'll never be able to appreciate if it isn't something you WANT to do.

Why are you afraid of just picking up any title and trying it? You're on 4chan, you're going to tell me you have precious little free time and you can't take the "risk" of "having a bad time"? The fuck is wrong with you? Shit or get off the pot, anon. You're on the retro games board, if you can't play a retro game without needing your hand held every step of the way then just fuck off. Jesus christ.

Nah, that's not true. It happened in the mid 90s when people whose first Zelda game was LttP started discovering the earlier games and noticing how different Zelda 2 was from the three others.

Zero evidence to back up this nonsense you just pulled out of your ass.
>>
>>12680310
Zelda 2 is very different though and for obvious reasons, people were expecting another LoZ, Zelda 2 was specifically designed to be different than the game that came before it.

One thing you notice about the overworld map and towns is not just the repetitive "textures" but they just used blank colors for much of the tiles. Probably helped save on space to make such a huge NES game but it looked bad for an NES game. Not a huge deal, it has it's own charm but if you compare it with something like Dragon Quest, you can't help but think it looks previous gen almost.

Similar to Simon’s Quest, it’s the odd man out of the early sequels.
