It was always the biggest issue with the American version that you had to go into the extra settings to turn it off before starting to play or you didn't actually beat it properly. Actual nocoding compsci student here.

After you successfully get the AI to help you with step 1, step 2 requires examining the code carefully in order to understand how to proceed further. This is the part that filters nocoders like me who need the AI for everything, because this is the part that requires actual sustained effort. It is then that the nocoder must choose between completing the project successfully or letting some other nerd do it instead.

personally it's by far the scariest game I ever completed. I think the low res graphics and perfect mix of occult stuff and that sensation of being in an inescapable place clicked just right to create an ultimate sense of uneasiness, but also the way monsters behave and the sounds they make, it's just fucking ridiculously unnerving, took me years to finally get the grunt to power through it. SH2 I found slighty creepy at most, didn't play 3 at all and 4 I tried playing as a kid but abandoned it pretty quickly kek, so I can't comment on those. but they do seem to have the same potential as 1

Everyone has speculated about Silent Hill 64 for ages, and it was probably technically possible. The hardest are the FMV videos. Dreamcast is duh, as it's a solid system that could run the game at 60fps, and still remain pretty accurate to the original experience.

What if I like my character's movement being crippled in a horror game because the liberty of easy movement removes a lot of tension.
Yes this is an argument in favor of worse is better.
If we push the line, we could argue that having finite health is annoying, but removing the flaw/humanity from the character removes not just the fear but the fun. Constraints take away but imo can add.

I don't disagree, but also in my mind the controls emulate that without changing the environment.
Like for example you could put obstacles at a corner, making the player react to it to proceed or face death. But I question if this doesn't add more action(genre) and detract in a different sense, maybe even detracting visually in some cases. Compromising the geometry to compensate the gameplay.

Not having fluid character control is a shortcut to this no doubt, a cheap trick. But so too are many of aspects that make the game good, like the fog and darkness being a cheap and easy crutch for rendering. Is it lazy? I can't say. And is it bad if it is lazy if it's still effective?

Take into account I'm leaning heavily on abstraction / imagination here which might be unfair in your opinion.
In the case of turning the corner like I said before, but with bad controls, it ends up being the same tension through different means. And we can imagine whatever made up reason for why that corner ended up being difficult to take for the in-universe character. Maybe that's too bullshit of an argument lol

Fully 3D games like SH and Tench benefit the most from decomp and ports, since they struggled on the PS1. A few simple changes and options like camera controls and it vastly improves the experience.and having the game actually run at stable 60-120fps is really great as opposed to the struggling on the native console.

Just modernising controls and performance for older games, without changing the core of the game, is a nice thing to have.
Like having camera control when playing the Zelda 64 titles. Even Nintendo did that for Majora's Mask 3D.

Fixing game performance can sometimes introduce issues though. Many games time sequences around slowdown, and Ocarina of Time's ending sequence accounts for this.
The Ship of Harkinian version will finish the ending sequence before the music finishes because of this desync, due to the absence of slowdown.

How does auto-aim effect the difficulty at all?
Like even in RE you almost never need it. 90% of the time the enemy is directly infront or behind you. It's basically impossible to ever miss, not to mention you only need to kill like 4 things in the whole game.
