Tempted to email them and request it be swapped to a Black, but I've heard their support team doesn't really respond to emails so I'm unsure it's worth the hassle. if it means anything I thought the crystal white version looked the best of the transparents.
The renders embellished how good the crystal d-pad/buttons were gunna look though
>>
>>12699501
The buttons definitely look worse than was advertised; in the promotional renders the plastic is perfectly clear and with razor-sharp legending, but under the lighting conditions of the video they seem milky with diffuse printing of the legending characters. What really bugs me though is the analogue sticks lighting, the truncated cross-shaped LED rings weren't shown at all in the renders and they stick out like a sore thumb.

Fuck it, I've emailed them requesting a swap to Black. I definitely prefer the opaque colours now, but I'll live with Clear if that's what they end up sending me.

My only other mister experience was years ago when a buddy and I built a MAME cab and stuffed a mister into it. It was horrible then but that was because we didn't research at all and thought these things were like the plug and play android boxes. We did get it up and running but it was a lot of frustrating poking around.

Got update all running now, the hope is the mister replaces every 5th gen and back console for daily use. Gonna spend a lot of time with N64 and Saturn to see if the Mister can replace those consoles since people ae 50/50 on if they can.

Game room is a mess since I started pulling stuff out to paint. Once I decide if mister is good to go for N64 and Saturn i'm pulling out the TV and consoles to finally get around to fixing up the walls and painting.

My only advice, when you people buy a house. Paint/repair everything before you move in. We moved in without touching anything and figured we go room by room. Well that's a huge pain in the ASS.

To be honest that is the truth, we did our master bedroom when we moved in 7ish years ago and it already needs a touch up but it would be starting we walls in good condition. My house is old and has lath and plaster walls, lots of imperfections/cracks/failed plaster to fix before I even get to paint. I can paint a room in a day but plaster repair? It will take a week to get my game room ready for paint.

>>12700037
That is the case but that's not important to me. I only bought the dock because that's where the SNAC port is.

Also, kinda shocked that this 15 year old VA Vizio has only 2 frames of lag? That's crazy. When I redo the game room i'm planning on a new OLED anyways but it's shocking to see how good this old TV is.

I also have a retro tink4k new in box for use on that TV though the SS One has built in filters that I want to mess with. I love my CRT but if I can get a OLED to look almost as good to save wear and tear on my CRT i'll take it.

You can change most of the puke colored stuff back. The problem is that it's pretty laggy and buggy right now but that's to be expected on the launch of a big update.
>>
>>12700236
Yeah, I just spent like an hour changing it back to mostly how it was, I disabled all the new animations because I noticed it was laggy too.

Yeah, I like that the top right pill button has a use now, but I don't like that you can't use the controller to clear notifications and have to tap the screen to do it, seems like an oversight to not have a shortcut button for it.

Anons, I don't have any handheld as I'm currently using my phone and a telescopic controller. It's an upper mid soc which actually let me emulate almost everything (newer games via moonlight).
What I want is a device for handheld games, mostly gb/gbc/gba/gg/ws. I know ds will be on another tier.
What'd you recommend as a budget option that would also let me apply light shaders (dot matrix, LCD grid)?
>>
>>12699769
It seems fairly unnecessary to be honest. The 34XX's advantage is that it's basically a 1:1 GBA with accurate-feeling buttons (Barring L and R) just with a crappier d-pad you can fix. This seems more like they wanted to make their own take on a GBA for the hell of it.
>>
File: file.png (26 KB, 761x385)
26 KB PNG
>>12700451
You can squeeze some DS out of budget ones. Your aspect ratios are all over the place though, I'm inclined to recommend the 34xx for the screen you can overclock to 120hz for the WS coverage while also being very close to doing it integer, at the cost of unconventional face and shoulder buttons. Shaders are a considerable hurdle on budget shit (probably worse now with the DDR3 downgrade), depends which shaders you mean exactly.
>>
File: ss.jpg (557 KB, 2712x1220)
557 KB JPG
>>12700485
It doesn't have to be the cheaper ones, but I don't want to overspend either.
I know for gb/gbc/gg something squarer will do, and 3:2 for gba or ws (as you said).
Yhe point here is to get something comfier for those consoles than a phone with controller attached.
>>
>>12700508
Well, that's the problem, there's not much variety on the old handheld mimicry side, it goes from $60 anbernics to ayaneo's $250 lalaland with no in-between. Maybe wait to see how >>12699769 pans out and if it's not a paper launch, it's probably getting a stronger SoC which would do better with shaders. I'll charge my 34xx and get back to you.
>>
Recommend me a good handheld for under $200 thay plays up to Wii U.
>>
>>12700508
That shader runs fine. It's the simple grid one, these naming conventions are so messy I can never recall which is which by name.

>>12700578
Used RP5 (should consider a RP6 at that point, it's a no-brainer for the jump in performance). Also look into the RAM situation for Wii U, some anon here keeps bringing up memory leaks.

I'll echo that, although I'll suggest the 35XX Pro or BatleXP G350 as another alternative. Basically comes down to whichever model of Game Boy you grew up with or have a preference for. Pocket, TrimUI Brick. Colour, Pro/G350. DMG, 40XX V. None of them are spot-on, but they get close enough to get the job done. Regular 35XX I just don't find very comfortable, and it doesn't hit as a GameBoy clone the way the others do.

>>
>>12701287
Ship, 2Ship, and LADX on android are all really easy, but the first two will throw you for a loop if you're unlucky. LADX is straightforward, for the Ships you grab the Gamecube's N64 roms for OoT and MM off Vimm, set up the apps, save your game at the first opportunity, then (very important) copy the root folders and paste their contents into their Android/Data folders, otherwise it will not remember your saves. After that it's smooth sailing (heh). Only real hangups are menu navigation since it's made for PC but you'll get the hang of it. Also I don't remember which folder (Data or root) is used for mods so I just update both folders any time I change anything. Speaking of mods, apparently for LADX you have to rebuild the apk from scratch if you want more than what's in there, but for the original game but better and with a slew of QoL options, vanilla is more than enough.

Correct. Deck hardware gets mogged in every single way by these two, that function exactly the same if you just flash an USB stick or buy the correct version from Lenovo, a very low bar for a hobbyist machine. Their prices also went down to the point they cost about the same, before the memory crisis fucked everything. Deck sells for the trackpads, there is no argument against this.

No. We know these things didn't just have an initial burst of sales and then just stopped selling, more people kept joining "late" and they chose trackpads.

So I bought a 40XX H, thinking that since it's running Linux it will perform similarly to my desktop PC in terms of input lag, at least for the lightweight games it can emulate. But I'm sitting here right now comparing VVVVV running on my PC and the native portmaster version (so no emulation layer, right?) and even that simple ass shit game is severely more laggy on the chinkheld. While the movement of the character is certainly not super snappy even on x86 (might be partly intentional), it's like dragging through molasses on the held. I made sure to run them both with Vsync off and the PC version capped at 60fps instead of 5000fps to get a fair comparison.
What gives? How am I supposed to play anything else besides jarpigs on this thing? How are people playing anything on Android devices where input lag is supposedly even worse?

I'm getting by with my controllers, but at this point that's all I'm doing, the buttons on my IPEGA PG9083s aren't too good, the MOCUTE 060 and the BSP D6 for my smartphone are doing better, but I like the bigger screen on the tablet because shaders look better on it, more CRT like. Anyways both are a pain when getting messages or calls, or when they're low on battery. I feel that I should go for actual handhelds in the future, though where I live this was the cheapest option when I consider that I already had the smartphone and tablet.

yes, all that. the thing is that with a large 16:9 screen you can play all those more retro systems just fine, sure with black bars on the sides but the actual game screen is completely fine whereas in a smaller 4:3 screen 16:9 will be unplayably small

An RP6 and the Nova have pretty much the same 4:3 screen area.
If you do the math (ask an AI) and letterbox the horizontal of a loss of a 5.5 inch (RP6) 16:9 screen you wind up with a 4.49 inch 4:3 display where the Nova has a 4.5 inch 4:3 screen
Conversely I own an Odin 2 Mini with a 5 inch screen and get 4.10 inches for 4:3 in case someone wants to check the math for the ratio
Now even if you really want to mince the .01 of an inch and say that losing that is a legitimate detriment or something which sure, your autism I won't fight you. You still gain
>PSP, Vita, WiiU and Switch
>Widescreen hack support
So it's up to you at the end of the day. If the letterboxing is a pet peeve that's fine but to claim you're on the losing end for the screen I think is a bit of a stretch. It's literally less than a grain of salt.

>>
Everyone is saying get the Nova, get the Mangmi Air Y, and the Trimui Brick Pro U (especially the Nova though in this case.) I have never seen so many positive reviews for unreleased devices. People are talking about the Nova like it’s going to solve world hunger. How can you know these handhelds are good if no one has them yet? A lot of these handhelds in this hobby look great, and then they are reviewed and they have a fatal flaw like a bad screen or a horrible battery life or thermal throttling like that. Just wait for the reviews from Russ and Joey and Techdweeb, look at the positives and negatives of the device, and then make your decision to buy. There’s nonzero chance that one of these devices turns out to be shit.

It's Anbernic pandering to Russ's complaints that the 35XX SP, being a 4:3 system which is a more universal aspect ratio, should have been the clamshell that did have the sticks, whereas the 34XX SP, being a 3:2 system, should have removed the sticks to focus on being more of a pure GBA SP clone. Also taking the time to fix the 34's big dumb forehead. It is stupid that it's an XX device that they're not slapping the XX name on though. I thought it might be rocking a new processor, but no it's still the H700.
>>
>>12704948
Eh. Sure it's nice to have it a little slimmer and remove the screen's forehead. But it's all fixes for minor annoyances I never think about when I play it. Seems there's no real reason to get one if you've got the 34/35xxSP already.

>Everyone is saying get the Nova, get the Mangmi Air Y, and the Trimui Brick Pro U
The only one of these I see universal agreement on is the Nova, which makes more sense than the other two. Aside from the unknown OLED, it's effectively a Retroid Pocket 6 underneath. We've already seen almost all of the components before, and on paper it's likely the best 4:3 handheld.

You also need to think of it more like automotive bench racing, rather than "positive reviews." Until they start shipping, all anyone can do is compare spec sheets.
>>
retroid brought back the RP6 12GB option? Did they fix their QC issues? Sorta curious about it
>>
I need advice. When the Nova comes in, assuming it's good, I'm downsizing. I'm keeping my Portal for modern/streaming, the Nova for all 4:3/retro, and one other handheld just because. I've narrowed it to these two, which one do I keep?

>Ayaneo Pocket Micro Classic
I really like how it looks and feels, and it's very comfy for GB/GBC/GBA. It's also reasonably pocketable compared to the Nova. However, I can sell it for a good amount if I'm not going to use it much in the future, and the Nova makes it redundant in some ways.

>Trimui Brick
Leaves me a truly a small and pocketable handheld and is probably the most practical to keep. However, I don't use it much (Pocket Micro replaced it), and I always hated how NextUI can't sync states properly. Gains points if MuOS support has gotten better.

initially because it is not faithful, but once I used it I saw the value, specially for PortMaster, but even then, mapping functions to them such as macros is cool as well. They are no in your way at all.

Games like Parasite Eve in the PSP can be mapped to the right stick to have double axis.

Games like Bangai-O in the Dreamcast play like a dream if you set the second axis to the stick by using Control Map Option 2 or B in the ingame settings. It becomes a twinstick shooter.

Also comfy for slower SHMUPs.

The Nova is because every 4:3 that came before it had some fatal flaw - namely the Anbernics of the 476H or 477M. Nova seems to do everything it needs to do and generally Retroid are fairly trusted at this point, although there could well be some serious issue with the OLED seeing as they supposedly commissioned it's production. I won't be buying because I already have too many already.

Anyway, don't trust Russ or Techdweeb because they only have a very surface level understanding of technology and will gloss over any kind of shortcoming. Example: they never mentioned the absolutely abysmal audio quality on the 477V. It is so bad, yet they didn't say a word. Don't trust them.

476H is that it's a bit weak for a lot of PS2/GC, other than that it's great and 95% of what the Retroon Nova is aiming to be. I mean most comments are that it looks like a 476H but it's on Anbernic for not having brought out a revision using the Dimensity chip that's on the 477s or finding an old warehouse full of Snapdragons.

The 477M is just the lack of analog triggers which precludes you from playing a handle of GameCube games.

The 477M is a flat metal slab with the wrong triggers. Bad ergonomics and it's too heavy.

The 476H has a glass front and less power, but gives you analog triggers and a little less weight.

The Nova, at least in theory, has it all. OLED display, plastic body without a glass front, analog triggers, and it's more powerful than both Anbernics. It even gives you an ergonomic back if you want it. It has the potential to be perfect, so long as Retroid doesn't screw it up.
>>
Honestly even if I already more or less have everything I need it's still fun seeing what comes out. These guys churn out chinkhelds at a pretty fast rate all things considered, there's plenty of points where they could have waited months or years between releases.

>Also, I'm confident the Frame won't actually change the state of x86 games on ARM much, so no point shopping for that.
I agree the Frame itself probably won't change anything, but if it leads to a ARM-based Deck, that will have a seismic impact. It's mostly a software issue anyway, when you consider how compatible Windows ARM laptops are now.

>>12705685

>>

All that's really left is trying out different form factors to put a H700 in, improving latency and lag and whatever, and probably eventually coming out with more powerful devices to do late retro stuff like PS3/X360 and so on. We might see a plastic foot with a screen attached to emulate the Bloodborne machine 4.
>>
>>12705685
>the RG476H of course has analog triggers
And there's its fatal flaw
>>
>>12705701
The h700 has been a vehicle for anbernic to shotgun a million form factors in a short time but its still lacking usb-c to c fast charging. I think a real endgame linux chip would ideally have fast charging without battery explosion issues, and maybe a true sleep mode

>>
>>12705756
Yeah, there's nothing wrong with (good) LCD panels, OLED worship has really gotten out of hand. The glass front on the 476H is a negative though, as are the triggers on the 477M. They each have small flaws keeping them from being perfect, as per Anbernic's usual. All they had to do was put the 477M internals in the 467H body and get rid of the glass.
>>
>>12705756
Dreamcast 100%, it's perfect for that.
But a lot of PS2/GC struggles on the T820. Outrun 2 for example you're going to have to go sub 1x to get 60fps, that's not a problem on Dimensity 8300 or Snapdragon 8.

On the topic of audio, what can we expect from Retroid with the Nova's output quality?

I have two sets of IEMs I generally get around with; Airpod Pro 2s for convenience, and (funnily enough) a Truthear Nova. With the former, anecdotally I've heard Retroid's bluetooth audio implementation kind of sucks and is laggy- but that they use a fairly good quality DAC for their 3.5mm jack, however my Novas have a 4.4mm balanced cable that naturally wont fit. Neither IEM set I find particularly comfortable to wear for long periods of time though, so I was thinking of picking up some earbuds- and then I found this set that Kojima collaborated which seem perfect but are pretty expensive. If people were exaggerating about the Retroid DAC quality though I may as well use a dongle DAC (something I really want to avoid), in which case I may as well keep using my Truthears.

It runs up to SNES great even when using a fast shader, and I've seen people play Android ports of stuff like Vice City on it, but it starts to slow down on some GBA titles and especially chugs with 3D arcade games. I couldn't test PSX on it since you only get around 6GB of storage to work with unless you buy a USB stick and an adapter for it. I mainly got it for putting Plex and IPTV on my ancient TV but I still play games on it occasionally, just be realistic about it.

Nope there's always some sort of issue that arises like cracking plastic and we don't know for sure yet that the non clear buttons aren't also sharp feeling

non-sega dpad and sharp buttons are a 100% dealbreaker
>>
>oof ouchie the bwuttons huwt my fingies!

>>
>>12706973
sega dpad was never in the cards, non-transparent buttons will very likely be less sharp
>>
It seems pretty par for the course desu. I haven't even watched the video (I can't stand that performative cuck) but it's always been the case that the plastic moulding of Retroid buttons is not great compared to Anbernic.
>>
>>12706975
I don't play on my Vita for the exact same reason
>>
The face buttons are confirmed to be the exact same as RP6 so unless they changed the manufacturing (they didn't), matte buttons will not have sharp edges. There's also the chance little man got a lemon as other reviewers haven't complained about that yet, but we'll see.
>>

I'm torn between the nova and the odin 2 portal. I don't actually care to play anything past ps2 so I don't need the 16:9 or anything and 4:3 would be better, it's just that juicy 8000mah battery on the portal that still makes it so tempting

They picked a side in the Saturn/Vita dpad debate. I understand they have a lot of history and investment in this style. They have probably had to prioritise certain details over other styles to pull off their financial strategies. I've accepted that. Even though I see the happy medium between Sega Saturn dpad and more diagonal accuracy as the ideal.

There are only three ratios that make sense for non-PC handhelds, and 4:3 is one of them.

4:3 covers nearly the entire retro era. 16:9 covers PSP and modern widescreen games. And the last is 3:2, because it's the best balance between the two. 16:10 is still too wide compared to 3:2.
>>

i just don't get it.

why not just get an android phone + Bluetooth controller?

pros
>can get an android phone with a chip that is better than current Android handhelds
>can get any controller: don't like the buttons on that one, want Bluetooth or USBC? get another!
> can easily swap phone for a new one, system is never obsolete
>somehow cheaper than buying flagship handhelds, my phone has a gen5, AMOLED screen, and somehow costs less than a Thor
>quick charge is much quicker (100W)
>dont have to think about yet another device to charge
> if traveling, carrying just the bluetooth controller is trivial and lightweight

cons
> risk of getting a call from your mum telling you that dinner is ready while you are playing
> maybe chipset support? because its too new? it will be fixed eventually
>>
>>12707543
lagdroid is shit
my 35xxh is already more pocketable than my phone by itself to begin with, then you expect my to carry goofy ass massive hunks of plastic around on top of that? you can fuck all the way off
my rg35xxh is about 50 times cheaper than my phone, so if a nigger breaks or steals it it's not as big of a deal
getting to and getting the sd cards out of my rg35xxh is 10000000000 million trillion times easier than getting the sd card out of my phone
my phone has no hdmi out port
my phone has only ONE usb c port, so i can't charge it while also using a usb gamepad with it
phones thermal throttle instantly when doing literally anything and run like a nigger with terminal cancer + late stage aids no matter what because lagdroid

kind of a fair point.
then again, use an older phone, most likely you can get up to ps1

>my phone has no hdmi out port
skill issue

>my phone has only ONE usb c port, so i can't charge it while also using a usb gamepad with it
there are pads that can charge while you game, you triple nigger

well, handhelds have fun to dissipate the heat, while (most) phones dont.

idk anons, i have been courting with the idea of getting an handheld, but everytime i see the prices i think phone+ controller is unbeatable, like i've written above.
so far the only one i like is the portal2 or pocket6, because both have AMOLED, but both cost more than 150:what i was willing to spend for a gadget that will stay in my nightstand unused most of the time.

Good post anon. For the Retroid Pocket Classic the DAC is provided by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC but the 3.5mm circuit is genuinely well designed with low noise so overall sound quality is decent. Though you can get the same or better quality with a cheap USB-C DAC like the Fiio/Snowsky Tiny or similar.
For sure the Bluetooth audio is ridiculously laggy on the RPC, at times we're talking multiple seconds of delay. There is something clearly wrong with their stack, yet again the big YouTube 'reviewers' won't tell you this.

I would have been team phone but my phone has double the ram of my chinkheld and was lagging on FF9 as well as not being able to fast forward Xenogears as fast as my chinkheld. Something about gpu or cores or whatever bullshit I don't care about, point is the chinkhelds are built to game and they do it better than my phone. It played gamecube just fine for some reason though, but still.

>Budget!
-Gamesir x5 lite. Be mindful, the failure rate of its shoulder buttons are just as bad as some chinkhelds
-Easysmx m15/memo s3. Just werks. Clicky dpad and hall sticks. The m10 uses membranes if you prefer those.
-Used razer kishi v2. Very good if you like clicky dpad and buttons and if your phone can handle the connector. The way the connector is designed can damage or kill your phone's usb port. Wish I was joking.
-Leadjoy blade+
-abxylute S8. Disk dpad option. Kneel
>Money!
-Hello gamesir g8+. Almost perfect but quality control is fucked. Some dpads press is multiple directions if pressed too hard while others are fine.
-Razer kishi ultra. The first phone controller by razer with zero flaws. Better for phablets or small tablets. Rarely goes on sale unlike the g8.
-Redmagic shadowblade 3. Never goes on sale and Bluetooth only, but an excellent controller. Pls don't pay that much for a controller tho.

Calling bullshit on a phone with the same chipset being cheaper than a handheld.
No active cooling, so you get throttled and/or ruin your battery with the heat.
Average telescopic controller is literally bigger than a handheld and it's "another thing to charge", so no benefit on those either.

Some guys feel the need to "own" a thread. It gives them a little ego boost to be the OP and custodian of a thread that goes to bump limit.
