Really enjoying this new persian.wad

Every time I start a new map I usually drag brutal doom along with it. I'm not particularly into splatter but the gunplay and the ka-ching of gunmetal is just too good. Can't play regular doom gunplay anymore. I even love the crosshairs. I don't know how much that changes the game and I don't care.

Do you have recs for other gameplay mods that I could try? Anything you like. What do you use?

I found one called Shockolate. Same as Chocolate Doom's goals of authenticity to the original experience, so all the pros and cons of that in the eyes of the beholder. A con I'd say is that it seems abandoned in 2019. Haven't gotten the chance to mess around with it myself yet.

That'd be pretty easy. You're constricted on how much text you can put in, so it'd be just basic flavor texts.

Were they? I've only played through the first hub so far, with two of the four basegame characters more or less in parallel, and between the Assassin and the Paladin, I thought the Assassin was the more interesting one as well as more fun to play. Though that may be because she gets a ranged weapon sooner.

In response to pic, having autism but not *that* kind of autism (I'm reminded of him describing the differences between Wolf3D and Doom as the "delta" now) is basically the closest thing to being cursed by God at birth. Literally idiot savant.
Anyway I just think of other maps that look cool and I'm often on the road for my job which has its consequences but the cool shit I do get to see is often inspiring.
>>
>>12709829
Not just at nature, I look up interesting places wherever I go for inspiration.
Speaking about pic, it reminds me of that one anon that was talking about how particular Carmack is about the game setup and how it is supposed to look and on what kind of display.
>>
>>12709829
I occasionally take pictures of things in nature, or urban/industrial things, for later inspiration.
>>
>>12709515
I think slaughter attracts this sort of audience. Not saying it's unfun - just that there is a special kind of autistic (potentially trans) person that consumes slaughter like it's the most amazing thing ever. They don't really want written story or anything experimental. It's chasing a high/feeling - pleasures of the flesh vs pleasures of the mind. I think this could be why the other older fps games didn't attract the same audience that Doom did despite modding tools being readily available.

Not intentionally, and there's too little resources to make proper "nature" maps beyond "overgrown structures" and such, also I let nature be nature.
However, one particular vista really got my noggin joggin - I was driving along a highway and there are those lush green hills and right in the middle this huge concrete factory. It looked like a literal tumor, and I got that idea of putting some bigass threatening, evil megastructure right in the middle of an innocent bystander hill or something.
Never made it into a map the way I originally envisioned it though.

>>12710612
No, they don't, it's actually pretty rare for that to be the case.
Someone discovering that one of the corpse models for Half-Life 2 used a photo of an actual burned corpse from a medical textbook for its face texture caused a stir because that's unusual.

Look at someone like Adrian Carmack's work, that guy's an actual gorehound, he worked at a hospital photocopying nasty medical photos and made extra copies for himself to show to likeminded friends. Still, he didn't use any of that in any of his games at all, rather he just drew, painted, and modeled gore from scratch.

Brutal Doom Monsters Only + Your choice of weapon mod

Is the literal peak of modded doom. Vanilla is its own beast and is more balanced. But no modder has ever touched the sheer absolute fun of brutal doom. I also enjoy how much the dev made everybody cope and seethe. I remember when one of the early versions used actual pictures of real life gore for sprites, it was so fucking based. Reminded me of goregrind album covers.

"As base" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there because I can't actually say you're wrong for certain depending on what you even mean.

However, almost no one is going to be using real gore like how id digitized the monsters or how people use photos as a base for texture work. The artist might have learned how things look from studying real gore at some point, but only senseless idiots are scanning in or tracing over real gore to put in their game.

I could use some ZScript help. Dodopod's climb code works great on 99% of things, but in Walpurgis, the Druid's Warg and Dryad forms have a transformation sequence in the Select state before going into Ready. So if you climb while using those, you transform again.

I tried commenting out that GetDownState line and changing GetUp to GetReady and that "works" in the way that it doesn't make me go through the sequence again. Though the lowering is kinda jerky, and other weapons aren't lowering. If I could just limit that behavior to when I'm using those weapons, that'd be good enough.

I want to make it check for using the weapons DogMode, DryadMode, or having the inventory items DogInHand or DryadInHand, whichever works better. Dunno how to do that. I think adding && after the climbing and not!climbing ifs? But I'm blanking on the rest.
>>
>>12710751
Alien, Predator, Terminator, Star Wars and even Hellraiser and Simpsons belong to Disney now and there are plenty of wads with those themes. Or do you want some gayer Disney property like wad with Cinderella, Frozen or Snow White theme? Even the discord troons are not gay enough to make those. Nobody in the whole Doom community is close of the absurdly high levels of gayness that only you can achieve. So you looks like you need to make your Disney princess wads yourself, homo faggot.
>>

>>
>>12710751
Disney is an overrated soulless corporation that stopped being good over half a centuray ago, so making an explicit Disney mod might as well be jerking them off.
Maybe "animation enthusiasts" should watch something good like Heavy Metal, anything Bakshi, Aeon Flux etc the actual good examples of "animation is cinema".
You shouldn't have to be a John K defending Spumguy to know this.
Also the modern Doom games already attracted enough Disney Adults.

Also, most stuff that tries to mimick old cartoons fails because it just copies surface elements and doesn't put that much effort into making the animation good, while also being too reference based.
We just had an indie FPS games with basic cartoon references (Mouse PI).
Cuphead worked because it did an impressive job at mimicking the cartoons (Traditional drawings even), while also having its own identity.
Similar to how plenty of game series, Doom and co included, are a result of devs copying movies and stuff they liked but still giving these games their own identities.
Sure Duke and the others were full of references to 80's movies but they also felt specific and kinda novel while the games still had some atmosphere for you to enjoy while playing.

So the weapon's forced into the lowered state to both lower it and to prevent attacking, right?
I guess you could keep the weapon in ready state and only force the lowered position, and handle disabling the attack via a variable instead.
You could set the variable in the code that handles climbing, then override the player's CheckWeaponFire function to check that variable before allowing firing. The downside is that none of the characters will play their weapon drawing animations for any of their weapons when they finish climbing.

Oh, I thought it was a moral type of problem. Like, I can only see this being bad this way in eyes of someone because it is akin to using intimate photos of a person without their consent. If I HAD to argue it's morally bad, then this is the argument I came up with.

Instead of crying about Mickey Mouse not having a mod, a time would've been better spent if discussed how underwhelming Fist of the North Star mod is. Midi is awesome but instead of having a fuckton of secret martial arts moves and focus on melee combat you have throwable batons.
>>
>>12711163

>>

>>
>>12710813
Maybe nobody wants to make a fucking Mickey Mouse mod?

Even in Europe, where a lot of people actually give more of a fuck about classic Disney characters, people don't care that much about Mickey Mouse, and if we were gonna do anything of the sort, it'd be a mod for Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge. Not that Doom's inherent violence and gore makes it readily suitable for those themes, young Uncle Scrooge was a tough cunt, but he never punched anyone so hard their body exploded into giblets. You could work around and change stuff like that, but it'd beg into question why to use Doom for something like this.
>>
>>12711137
That texture was outright hand drawn with pencil on paper by Adrian Carmack (he did a number of textures that way), you can find pics of the drawing itself around.

>>12711150
>If I HAD to argue it's morally bad, then this is the argument I came up with.
People will argue that, and I don't think it's an unreasonable position in any culture where there already is a mentality of having some sort of respect and reverence for the dead.

Personally, I think that just taking such content and slapping it in your entertainment, while cheap and artless as said (look at Adrian's illustrated gore, it's masterful and worth striving for), is also just going to be difficult to morally justify.
People will reasonably take issue with it, because that was once a person and they are generally supposed to be owed some sort of 'peace of the grave,' where extending that to evidence of their last moments and remains isn't a leap.

Looking at something like LiveLeak, that can also be looked at as violating that, but that sort of place also fulfills a greater purpose than just for sickos to oggle at death. You could have just crafted fictive gore for your entertainment work, but places like LiveLeak maintain hard evidence of very real tragedy and atrocity, which have some level of importance for truth and history (and is also a useful resource for preparing burgeoning medical workers and first responders to the grotesque that they will inevitably have to see IRL for their line of work).
>>
As another artistic reason, real life gore is often not as dramatic and 'visually impressive' as fictional gore is usually stylized as. The sheer volume and energy you tend to see in fictional sprays and spurts of blood isn't always reflected in reality (in fact, it usually isn't), so it's not as interesting or cool. Dramatic and exaggerated is better for entertainment than real and clinical gore on that point.

I recommend some of LossForWords' mods to play with BD monsters, like Act of Violence, Omerta, Postal: Running With Chainsaws, or Disaster Jester: Classified, because BD compatibility is baked right into those. Like if you want shotguns to send enemies back like in BD. I don't remember if Naku-Naru does that. I know I did it in mine.
>>
>>12711124
This anon >>12711328 has already hit the most relevant moral points and with Doom itself the original artists already went about it in what most would consider the best way, both artistically and morally speaking. Then you start getting into the more fantastical stuff and it gets even more distasteful. It's hard to imagine that using images of someone's remains/gore as, for example, the image for a demon getting blasted by a plasma gun is anything but disrespectful.

>>12711338
This too. If you look at most of the monster deaths in Doom, they're way more dramatic and exaggerated than anything you'd see in real life.

Yea it's good, but it's also quite different than what you would expect from 10s wad. The mapper is a russian legend who's style is mainly vanilla. Alpha Accident takes lot from E1 and alpha versions as the name implies. The difficulty comes not from slaughter but exactly from big, mazy techbases. Mazier and bigger the maps get the further you progress, so if you don't enjoy it now, it might not be your cup of tea.

It's from star trek, but the helmet itself is a toy they sold in the 70s that has nothing to do with the show. They just labeled it "Spock".
It's a good show you should watch it.

Growing up with Next Generation reruns on TV in the 2000s, which I largely enjoyed, I wasn't sure that I was going to like the original series given the impressions I'd been given about it over prior years, but deciding to watch it around its 50th anniversary, I actually quite liked it, it was fun and I found the story and characters engaging.

It's more campy than TNG, but it's not a non-serious show, just kinda spaced out and weird, in fun ways. Having always liked Jean-Luc Picard's personality and no-bullshit attitude, I was expecting something much more different with James T. Kirk, in part because that's the impression which William Shatner himself will give you about the character and series in later years, but he's not the unserious womanizer popular conception actually has him as, he's pretty much just as no-bullshit as Picard is, maybe even more so, and it's more the circumstances around him having weirdness and camp.

Sometimes, they encounter something outlandish and kind of silly, but they still have to deal with it somehow.

I always hated the original series, because of how odd the characters were when it came to machines and cyborgs which felt bizarre for a series set in the future
>Kirk meets and alien who enjoys harming humans
But... cantyousee.... we.... are one and... thesame?
>Kirk meets a peaceful android who likes humanity

Did the Star Trek setting have a Butlerian Jihad or something?

Tremor is okay, but it's doing TOO well at sticking to the original Quake formula and this is getting old fast. The Ziggurat Vertigo replacement is really good though.

I checked that the offset has effect on that thing so you can have a long width
but please make height 60 exactly

Drawing lightning bolts is a bit tricky kinda, at least if you also want it to be legible text at the same time. Anyone else have any other ideas for it? Or are just capable of doing that better than me?

>>12713546
Oh, no, I just scale it up by 10x, so that I can then cleanly scale it 20% higher to (more or less) match how Doom renders its pixels taller, just to show how the graphic will actually display in the game.

Here's the current WIP.

I think I like Quake techbases more than the fantasy stuff when it comes to classic style maps. The human enemies tend to be more fun to fight.

Honestly, the problem with Tremor is that it's just Quake 1's campaign all over again and despite the slipseer crowd having a reputation on here for arrogance and wanting to "take over" or thinking they're hot shit they seem terrified of innovating the original map design. Besides, I'd argue Quake's official campaign is worse than Doom's.
The gameplay, weapons and monsters only really shine in good fan maps, but that's just my opinion.
>>
>>12713712
There's a reason why Doom is more popular than Quake even to this day, but it's still a good game.
>>
How do I make Heretic be not boring? I'm assuming that it sucks because I'm trying to play it like Doom instead of like Heretic so what does "playing Heretic like Heretic" really entail? Obviously, I am not playing the remaster.
>>
>>12713720
I feel that there’s a few reasons these days, though Q1 does compare more favorably when compared solely to Doom 1.
But in addition to the enemy roster, Quake feels much more “rigid” with its modding: With Doom, depending on the port, you can combine several - a gameplay mod, maybe a monster replacer, all on top of plenty of vanilla maps. For Quake, most of the new/good stuff I’d want to try with mods were all made with things like AD, Copper, or their own thing.

>>12713796
i dont know how doom works but a quake mod is literally the game logic. Its not like plugging in a module each progs file is its own game code. Quake 2 has the same problem and so does half life where you can not load a mod on top of a mod thats why so many bots had to to be adapted for mods and you would see things like CTF+ReaperBot when looking for server files. In quake the game logic is run on the "server" and your game client is just for rendering, inputs and such even in single player the server just runs in the background unnoticed. You cant run a bot over another mod cause the bot logic would be competing with the mod logic so they need to be combined. I think half life gets around that limitation with things like metamod and amx scripting.

Some anon said that map with stock textures only would be lame, so I made another one, now only with BTSX stuff. It sucked all the time and life out of me and I had to copypaste a lot to squeeze in time limit.
