>Try to keep things /vr/ related: Focus should be on 6th Gen Consoles and older. Slight off topic is fine so long as it's related to CRTs, such as later 16:9 models, HD models, etc. Systems with backwards compatibility are also safe territory, as are re-releases on newer hardware. PC CRTs are also welcome and appreciated.
>Produce OC! Bust out your camera and take photos of your CRTs displaying all sorts of games, featuring all sorts of tubes, using all sorts of signals. Getting good shots can be hard, but if you take enough, at least a few will turn out alright.
>Try and give as much information as possible when asking for info on a specific set, or troubleshooting an issue to expedite and help you may receive. As always, Google is your friend and we are your friends with benefits. Do people read this? Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either; Seriously, there's literally 6 years of backlog at this point.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. Always remember to show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Limited discussion of video processing and scaling devices is alright, but remember to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories.

It does have a service menu where I could maybe adjust that, but I don't have a remote so I haven't tried to open it, I'm scared I'll break something. Fortunately for me, this TV switches inputs by looping around in the channel select. I was able to adjust the basic picture settings with the volume buttons, but I can't actually make the menu close without turning the TV off. I'm scared I'll break something if I go in the service menu in those conditions.

How much would you pay for a working 13" TV VCR combo? Dude wants $60 but I was thinking like $20. Am I being unreasonable?
>>
>>12711516
Especially glaring for a character/artist who is autistic about all the details of the tech in an image.
>>
>>12711551
i paid $50 for one in great shape but that was a couple years ago. the sad truth is that $60 is probably a good price in a lot of areas right now with how much CRTs have been hoarded by the """hustlers""". though it's probably not impossible to find one cheaper, the fact that these units were often more cheaply made means finding ones in working order can be difficult, so it might be worth jumping on the opportunity if $60 isn't breaking the bank for you.
>>
Is it normal for some CRTs to have their degaussing coils kick on when plugged in rather than hitting the power on button on the tv itself

60 bucks sounds good especially if the VCR still works + has the remote. You're kinda low balling him a lot. Lowest I would go is maybe 40.

Yeah supposedly high contrast setting wears out the tube faster (not sure if brightness really does)
Of course, all crt's are consumable and you should just enjoy it with best settings while you can, never know when it might get broken, or have components go bad that maybe you arent savvy enough to fix.
>>
>>12712582

Just go to a dark area in a game, like underground in smb1. Put brightness lower until the blacks seem truly black then stop it there, then go to a normal level ingame and raise contrast to whatever level is pleasing to you. I wouldn't go too high, it's harder on the tube and your eyes.

I've gotten a few 10-13 inchers on ebay over the years and have had no problems, just cost markup by like 50ish bucks usually. I still have two I got on there to this day and they're great. FB marketplace is probably best but whether it's good or bad depends on your area. I was in the midwest and crts on FB there were plentiful and modestly priced. Intermittent issues like that are poor solder connections or failing capacitors most of the time. It probably won't be anything obvious when you open up the monitor.
It sounded like you're describing vertical or horizontal collapse but hard to be sure without video.
What I do is download the service manual, feed it into an AI chatbot, and describe what's going on. It will at least give you ideas on where to look. I'm not a pro but I've repaired several crts on a component level this way. Usually it's something stupid like a solder joint, failed capacitor, resistor, diode, transistor, or IC.
>>
>>12714638
unfortunately there is no service manual for my monitor or any documentation about it anywhere online ive searched coutnless times, even tried asking claude to search it found nothing

formac pronitron 17/330, guess i can open it and look for cracked joints or leaky / bulged caps though
>>
>>12714656
Odds are it's a rebadged monitor, or at least the chassis is similar enough the more well known brand. Look for a chassis number or start searching for who originally made the tube and go from there.
>>
>>12713147
>>12714149
I looked into. I had the EDTV version which I just learned is the same tv just with 1080i disabled in the service menu, which you can enable. fuck. if I had known that back then I would have never gotten rid of it probably.
>>
>>12715114
We all tossed our CRTs unfortunately.
What you're really after is 480p on those EDTVs anyway since they don't do 720p. Perfect GameCube, Wii, Xbox, ps2 480p tv. It probably did lagless 240p/480i over composite and s-video too.
You can probably find one, they're not desirable compared to widescreen models.
>>
>>12710898
Nice find! That Samsung is beauty. What's the first thing you're playing on it?
>>
>>12712625
I spent yesterday evening setting it all up and I think I'll agree in the end. It sounds so enticing, but in reality it's just endless fucking around with resolutions in arcadeOSD and the TV service menu.
>>
>>12715589

And using it with Retroarch crt switchres can get pretty tedious. Once optimized I think it's better than using shaders on a flat panel but Fuck. I feel like I spent dozens of hours over time messing with stupid bullshit, it was almost a hobby in and of itself. Plus windows test mode is always making strange things happen and shit like slower boot times and other anomalies, and sometimes emudriver just refuses to install. Whole thing can be a pain. Again, it's like, mister outputs perfect analog signal and sync and just fking works 99% of the time no matter what you're doing. With what you said about service menu, I mean, I still do that, emudriver or not. Different devices are just set to output slightly different dimensions and in the case of emudriver, different signal transcoders do too. It's just crt shit, best write settings down and change picture positioning depending on what you're doing
>>

I got a component cable for my Wii to use on an old HDTV and also to play gamecube on.
I turned on the progressive scan mode, but I can't tell if it matters when selecting TV ratio on Wii settings if it should be on standard or widescreen. Or does that not matter for gamecube as it just adjusts the ratio itself? Are those TV ratio settings on Wii only relevant for Wii games?
This is how the game looks on the TV.
>>
>>12715976
PVMs were made from the 1970s to the early 2000s. There is no one single PVM price. It's like asking the price for a car with no details given. And yes, newer PVMs like the M and L series can easily go for $700+.
>>
>>12716408
>Are those TV ratio settings on Wii only relevant for Wii games?
Yes. Gamecube games that supported widescreen or 480p had their own internal options that turned them on. If you look up the list of gamecube games with widescreen support it's a really small list. Unlike wii where it was standard.
>>
>>12716402
>i like having support for svideo, component and composite
that's just as common on consumer TVs. There's also pro monitors that are composite only.
>>
>>12716408
Your webm looks terrible. Wii does fake widescreen. It squishes the picture then lets your tv stretch is back out. In Nintendont you may have to enable force 480P/progressive scan.
what does old HDTV mean? Is it a CRT or some rear projection crap?
>>
>>12716407
They aren't real prices, nobody is paying them. Just keep an eye out for something coming up for free or sub £100 and be quick when it does.
>>
Retarded question im sure, but are the ports on the back of a pvm universal? Like those little weird ass din connectors or whatever they are called on the back of them, if i get one of those adapters to plug in a composite cable, will those same ports/adapters also allow you to get rgb/component signal through them with the respective cables? Or do i need to look for an rgb cable that directly would plug into those DIN ports, and likewise if i had to use an adapter on an rgb cable to do so, would there be signal quality loss due to needing that extra piece between the monitor and cable?
>>
>>12716718
Are you talking about a S-Video port?
>>
>>12716718
BNC connectors are what they're called. It's just a different way to connect to the monitor, it can't magically process a type of input the PVM doesnt support.
>>
>>12716739
So are they always rgb supporting then if i have a rgb cable that plugs directly into them? Because i also see people using little port adapters plugged into those that lets them just run a basic composite cable signal to them. Or do not all pvm monitors support rgb?
>>
>>12711906
green phosphor just makes me think of that guy who cums on his CRT with a gay green face on it
>>
How bad is my geometry. This is using the wii's 240p suite.

It's also annoying that different consoles will all display slightly different geometries.
>>
>>12716747
Not all monitors support rgb input. In general you can use passive adapters no problem. They don't degrade the signal.
>>
>>12716780
When you take photos set your camera manually to 30 or 60fps. It's hard to look at pics with those big rolling lines.
Geometry is not great but could be worse. The image is tilted and underscanned. Check if you have tilt correction in the user menu. Otherwise the yoke needs to be rotated. Adjust the overscan in the service menu.
>>
>>12716780
looks good. you should increase the horizontal size a little bit until the red dots are touching the edge directly like on the top and bottom
>>
>>12716879
Thanks, I'll see if I can adjust the tilt.

>>12716928
It's been a while since I adjusted things, but for some reason I remember doing this in the past and it ended up messing up the aspect ratio. I think the scope view showed something looked stretched or something. It's also entirely possible I misinterpreted something in the past.

Rambling aside, is it sufficient to have the dots on the edge of the screen both vertically and horizontally to ensure I have the correct aspect ratio?

>>12716718

The back of a pvm will tell you what ports are on it. If a trinitron has rgb, there will be an r next to the r port, g for green port and so on. They always have a composite connection too. Sometimes s-video. You can look one up on ebay or something and see the ports for yourself. And the BNC connectors are just connectors, little pieces of metal. You can put a regular composite cable into them once that piece of metal is on it. Frequently RGB cables are pre-fitted with these connectors and can't be separated from the cable. You put them on and slide the little switch thingy to make them connect and stay connected.

>>12716407

It's also ebay. Prices are inflated because of shipping. It's not necessarily scalpers as much as it is hoarders inflating the prices of these things because they created scarcity. Like half of the people into pvms have like 10 of them. They started hoarding them like 15 years ago when they were very affordable and plentiful.
