flip 3 with the same screen, sd8gen2 and a little bit thinner would be perfect

>flip 3 with the same screen, sd8gen2 and a little bit thinner would be perfect
why spend money on that when the thor exists

nova flip would offer something fresh by being something inbetween an upgrade to the miyoo mini/xx sp and a less wide(and therefore lighter and pocketable) high ender like the flip/thor without none of the awkward empty space/second screen cramp.

Here Russ says he saw the upcoming device where they are reusing the nova screen but can't say much, when everyone is throwing in ideas he suggests a classic clamshell which is the one he can say because that's not what they showed him
https://www.youtube.com/live/27GRDDzGEwc?si=_bMkNbIuAVCjwofu&t=5006
1:23:26

Here Russ says he "thinks" the Nova screen will be reused on a dual screen device, he is more straightforward because he didn't mention he got the inside scoop from the china trip:
https://youtu.be/vNntDXRsSJs?si=rcXKTW36_AzzIL-X&t=3576

and then there's that discord(?) screenshot where one of the retroid staffers talks about a dual screen device in the later part of the year
>>
>>12720318
We already know they are making a dual screen device in the second half of the year. Safe to assume the nova screen is in that

So I was thinking last night, is there any handheld or OS that just works like an actual retro console lets say in the N64/PS1/GBA/GB/NES/SNES era type loading, to where I can just pop in an sd card with lets say super mario on it and it just loads up without having to scroll through a game list? I know it seems kinda dumb but I feel like having 1,000s of roms and having to scroll through them I just don't really play anything cause of it. I just wanna have like 3 SD cards with 1 game on them each and just pop it in and it will boot straight into the game, without needing to buy the actual hardware.
>>
>>12720393
I can't think of any FW that accounts for having literally one game like that. The simplest I've used is MinUI/NextUI for Linux handhelds.
>>
>>12720412
i'm really surprised no one has thought of something like this.
>>
>>12720393
closest I can think of is having an EmulationStation frontend, and setting it to start on Recent gamelist so you just press 1 button to get into the last game you played. Not perfect but closest I can think of
>>
>>12720393
Just do the "5 games handheld" thing.
Like how different would it be to have to pick between which SD card you want to put into the device today, and which game from a list?
>>
>>12720463
cause it would be like swapping physical games, specially since i have like 5 sd cards.

Of the chinahelds I've had the Miyoo Mini Plus had the best overall controls and I wish they would make a horizontal iteration like an A30 V2 (or the 'Hello, canceled' P60). Retroid 2S is up there with the d-pad but its face buttons and overall comfort weren't that great.

>>12720660
I have an RG28XX. It was really cool for a little while. I set it up to share SD2 with an RG35XX-H, so I just swapped the card back and forth whenever I took the RG28XX out somewhere.

But I eventually found it a pointless novelty. I don't actually need to have a handheld that small in my daily life, and I'd rather use something larger at home. I now have a Brick as my small handheld, which I think is a more usable option that's still small enough to pocket on the rare occasion I want to.

If your life is different and you think you'll use a tiny handheld a lot, the RG28XX is surprisingly comfy to play. The only downside is the lack of wifi, since I sync saves. But if it's more about having something easy to carry, it's worth picking a handheld that's a little bigger.

A good lcd is the one on RG477M. A bad one is Switch 2 where it looks like someone put a white overlay layer on everything
>>
>>12721034
Switch 2 LCD has annoying ghosting, but I can tolerate it after an extended play session.
It's noticeable again if I use anything else in-between though.

It's always the same shit with hardware, sell on the good points, ignore or downplay the weak points.
Sure it'd full HD but it's a cheap ass display.

Similar shit with laptops, I remember someone buying a laptop with pretty good performance specs but the OS drive was a fucking 5400RPM HDD so everything was slow as shit.

I want to lean more into Handheld Gaming on the go, and don't want to carry my Switch around, so I was thinking of buying a PSP/VITA and modding it.
Would anons here recommend a PSP or VITA, and does it even matter???...The PSP1000 is the cheapest online for like $55-75 and anons always talk about the PSP1000 feeling more "premium" and just being the best for modding and support in general, so I've gotten the impression that this might be the best to start off with.

Psp, vita1000 and vita2000 owner here.
My preference: vita2000
Light, better battery, not as fragile and screen is perfect trust. Then with mods you can calibrate the screen so colors pop a bit more if you want that oled look and it looks barely the same.
Psp games look and play great and you can't miss the vitas tight catalog.
Doa, virtua tennis, killzone, catherines lather, gravity rush, boi...you name it. Gtas's...you name it
>>
>>12721764
Vita is better than the original PSP, but Thor is much better than both considering the amount of games you can play. PSP and Vita are just too weak and limited compared to modern handhelds even after the performance hit due to emulation. Even an Anbernic RG Vita Pro would be a better purchase than a PSP.
>>
>>12721764
Get a Vita 2000 if you aren't gay. Lighter, better battery, non-shit USB port. A HRT Thor will make you transition.

Vita is probably the best bet for this sort of thing.
Reasonably easy to set up, lots of options, sturdy (I had like five PSPs break on me when I was a kid), a nice menu, long battery life and it can run most pre-N64 consoles pretty well.
It is worth having one even if you just plan on using it for PSP and Vita games.
Mine has been my go-to for years and I have still been messing with it while waiting for my first proper emulation handheld to ship.
>>
>>12720939
You say this but these chinkheld OLED panels do suffer a wide range of problems and the colour most will experience is one that is more than a touch over saturated. Meanwhile the 4.7" LED display that Anbernic uses does have very natural colours under the right conditions. There's always a better display just around the corner so it's not worth fighting over anyway.

PSP will get you PSP, native PS1, and anything below GBA. GBA and SNES will not run great.
Vita will get you native PSP and PS1 support, Vita games, and some level of retro gaming up to around PS1. It's ideal to get the 1000 if you want a better screen, and if you can score a 3G version you can replace the 3G slot with the SD2Vita solution to allow your cartridge slot to still be functional. If you want to save money the 2000 exists but it doesn't have as nice of a screen.

Thor will get you up to Switch support depending on the model you buy and allows you to play non-button DS games on top of 3DS and Wii U games. You can also play Android games natively like gachas if you play those. Most of its issues seem to have been fixed with updates though it still has some latency issues, but it's far better than it was in the first few months. Ultimately its issues are software-sided, not hardware.
>>

Hi frens I'm kinda new to retro handhelds. I have an RG35XX H that I love, mostly for playing GBA games.

Now I'm wondering, if I want to play ONLY PS2 games like Ratchet & Clank, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Ape Escape... do I need to go for a very powerful device even if I don't care about playing newer systems? Or is there any middle ground handheld that can run PS2 well? I'm worried these particular games are very demanding to emulate regardless
>>
>>12722742
i think that any device with a chip capable of brute forcing ps2 on lagdroid is at least 200 bux
maybe one day snack&drink will make a video that covers the comprehensive range of devices that can do ps2 this side of the massive pc sumerian slablets
>>
>>12722742
>do I need to go for a very powerful device even if I don't care about playing newer systems?
Pretty much. PS2 emulation on ARM is quite bad even with ARMSX2, so you basically need a device capable of Switch emulation anyway. Meanwhile x86 handhelds can run PS2 just fine, but all of them are "powerful" and expensive.

Maybe once ARMSX2 gets to the level of PCSX2 there will be a "middle ground". Probably in a couple of years.
>>
>>12722228

>>
>>12722709
Only as the Lite.

>>12722742
>do I need to go for a very powerful device even if I don't care about playing newer systems?
Yeah, mid-range playing PS2 is basically a tourist trap. Strongly suggest 8Gen2 over the SD865 to be on the safer side, they cost nearly the same anyway.
>>
>>12722709
What do you even need 12GB of ram for on an SD865 with only one screen?
At least on the Thor Lite it would be useful for multitasking.
>>
>>12722797
>>12722779
Switch emulation on Android is also surprisingly decent because the Switch is also an ARM device, an emulators can do native code execution.
>>12722742
So it's a bit of both, but yeah, if it can play PS2 it can play Switch, especially if it can play the ones you mentioned.
Retroid Pocket 6 is probably the cheaper option right now.
>>
>>12723031
>Retroid Pocket 6 is probably the cheaper option right now.
nvm, I'm retarded and though the Nova was more expensive. Actually go for the Nova if you want to play PS2.
>>
>>12723031
I've been told the ps2 emulation sucks on android because aether/nether are forks of pcsx2 which does ps2->x86 translation, but because there's no arm-specific JIT recompilers, the aether/nether emulators end up doing ps2->x86->arm.

>>
>>12723325
I'm only concerned if this adhesive can withstand the constant temperature shifts and last long, for at least the mount should still be available if necessary. I also wonder if they're gonna change that for their other chinkhelds, namely the Thor which has everyone complain about the fan.

I have a newer Pixel Phone, so I could probably just emulate PSP/VITA games on it and any games up to maybe the Switch, and buy something like this to keep it nice and portable in my pocket...Its kinda pricey at like $100-$150, but would make the perfect handheld on the go? (in terms of power)

It's surprisingly demanding. Cheapest options would be in the $90-$120 range:
>Helegaly Action Pi
>Retroid Pocket 2S
>Retroid Pocket 3
>PowKiddy RGB10MAX3 Pro
>Game Kiddy GKD 350H Ultra
There's a few others, but they lack video out. Ignore the anon that recommended H700 devices (Anbernic XX series) since those can barely run some N64 games even with all speed hacks enabled. You need something at least 3x more powerful for comfortable N64 gameplay. PS1 is much easier to emulate so barely any device struggles with it.

However, I'd recommend buying something in the $150-$225 range. A lot of PS2 games are playable on those devices, and considering you want to play on a TV you'll probably want to upscale the PS1/N64 games a bit and maybe even apply a widescreen hack or heavier mods.
Probably anything in this list would be a smarter purchase than any of the devices I've mentioned above: https://retrocatalog.com/retro-handhelds?filters=%7B%22priceCategory%22%3A%22Mid-Range%22%2C%22ps2%22%3Atrue%2C%22videoOut%22%3Atrue%7D

Chinkhelds are 80% slop.
Slop means there's something wrong on purpose.
Clicky triggers, PWM, hard buttons, cheap plastic, muffled sound, cardinal snapping, no hall effect sticks, mediocre battery life, overheat, sticks in line with sticks instead of slightly inwards, a bit heavy, glassfront, big bezels, overprized...
But only a few get it right.
By reading comments here and there you'll see people praising some specific things over and over and a fanbase is born. No performative coping pictures but proper text on why the handheld feels so good.

You will get a better psp experience from a handheld that can actual upscale it. Psp/vita are nice but they are not optimal for most other systems or the best way to play them, the homebrew emulators are just a cool bonus. If you want to play more then you should think about getting thr retroid pocket 5/6 or the thor. The gen 2 chip in the expensive thor and rp6 can play switch and pc games but I only recommend getting the 12gb version so you aren't gimped, the 865 chip on the rp5 and cheaper thor can play everything to gen 6 in power, psp and some light switch and pc gaming, the rp5 has 12gb of ram so that shouldn't be an issue. Vita emulation is still developing but luckily a lot of its library has been ported so if you can play switch or pc then you can probably find a decent amount of port that are also on the vita. There are also a lot of front ends that try and make your system look more like a 3ds/ds or psp and make it feel more like a console.
>>
>>12723926
Mangmi air x, trimui smart pro s, rg vita/pro . Mangmi is the best but if you don't want to pay around 100 plus with shipping then the other two are decent options.
>>
>>12725034
T618 is better than the snapdragon the mangmi uses. The snapdragon is only good for 5 gamehub games he'll be able to play
>>
>>12724484

>>
>>12725034
>Mangmi Air X
>better than RG Vita Pro
What the absolute fuck are you smoking? The CPU is ever so slightly better in the Vita Pro, while the GPU performance is significantly better in it.
>>
>>12725048
>>12725082
It's a better purchase than the pro even if it's not as powerful especially if your performance celling is psp. The pro will probably be obsolete in the 150 range if anbernic prices their next SD chip device well.
>>
>>12725110
>if anbernic prices their next SD chip device well
If they do then the Air X won't be a serious option.
>>
>>12724915
They'll just use the meme flags.
>>
>>12725025
Exactly. psp is 500X better on steamdeck and i got my deck for $200
>>
>>12725115
It would still be the best psp option on a budget unless anbernic makes the pro cheaper.
>>
>>12725186
How? The regular rgvita and gamemt ex8 both mog. Vita even more because it has better controls. Ex8's g99 is straight up a very good chip for its price point.
>>
>>12725186
>It would still be the best psp option on a budget
The normal RG Vita is still ever so slightly more powerful than the Air X.
>>
>>12725220
>regular vita
720 screen and 3gb ram for Android and doesn't upscale all psp games, the smart pro s is a better option if someone really can't spend like 15 bucks more for the air x.
>ex8
Those ergonomics look like hell, it's also 3:2

If I want more 6th gen emulation I'd rather get something that reliably plays most (but preferably all) of the games in its library at native.
>>
>>12725246
I'm telling ya. Thr magnmi's ass. Vita, shartpro s, and ex8 mog.
>3gb ram
Still upscale psp more than magnmi. The only real negative of the t618 is it freaks out if you don't turn it on for too long.
>>
>>12725246
>720 screen
And? You're pretending like any of these are capable of running PSP at above 3x scaling.
>>
>>12724081
Yes, yes (you) are.
>>
>>12725254
I was thinking of the smart pro s that can't upscale all of them so I had it mixed up, they are pretty similar with upscaling psp
>>12725267
You can upscale n64, ps1 and dreamcast to a higher resolution, don't think it can do 1080p but its more than 720. if you can go for a better screen and an extra gb of ram for barely more money then that is an easy choice.
>>
>>12723674
>And any and all, but Switch Games would be nice, so having a powerful handheld strong enough to fit into your pocket would be ideal...But also I want to play PC-Level too if possible, but mostly indies nothing too insane.
Listen, ignore the people minmaxing dollars and just get a RP6 or a non-Lite Thor. You won't get there penny pinching, but you are giving away pocketability to reach those. And Vita emulation isn't all that functional.

GEG! The rgvita is the t618 with the LEAST problems. I say this as an x28 enjoyed. Which also moggs the memetroid pocket 3+. And unless he finds one from someone who hasn't used it, the battery for a used unit will be shart. Max zhou, hero. Retroid? Zero.

Jewey brought it up too, though his stream was more like watching an incoherent hobo going over a freebie from a company he despises with senseless, idiotic opinions such as BEZELS BAD, only to immediately try to damage control his contrarian assburger outbursts because he really wants to keep receiving review units again.

I’m a real curmudgeon in regards to that topic.

While I appreciate these retro handhelds for keeping digital media alive, it’s gross as fuck how much of it just becomes e-waste, due to no real repairability. Which is worse because you KNOW it’s on purpose, because they know that the average user of this sub will buy the same thing ten times over if you move the joystick layout or add transparent plastic or a hinge.

I know that PSPs, Vitas, and 3DS’s are older and can only emulate reasonably up to a point; but I’d rather have something that I can repair and replace the batteries and keep alive for decades over any of the e-waste disasters that this sub loves.

But I generally agree that inbuilt obsolescance is a terrible thing. I like the way the Powkiddy RGB30 is built like a broken down truck. Digital triggers are a regression from analog triggers. You lose functionality in gamecube and racing games.

>>
>>12728585
After using both a handheld and telescopic controller with analog triggers, I now know digital was always better. Having acutal buttons for l3/r3 instead of pressing the sticks is also better.
>>
>>12728585
Analog triggers are the biggest meme in all of gaming. It's always the same two things I hear: racing games and GameCube. And it's not even as true as people say. First, it's only racing sims, and the only car games I like are more arcade-y fare. Mario Kart, Vigilante 8, Cruis'n, Crazy Taxi, etc. Second, the only example from GameCube I ever hear people give is Mario Sunshine. I played the Switch version with the Pro controllers and had absolutely no issues whatsoever using FLUDD. I'm sure there are more games that physically exist, but not only are they games that I don't play, it seems like most other people don't play either, elsewise they'd mention them every once in a while.

On the flipside, a short throw digital input is quicker and more comfortable to use. Analog triggers have been a regression in useability for 99.pi% of all games ever created, and 100% of the ones I play and care about. I'm sure it's super wonderful for all the racing sim enthusiasts out there, but designing general purpose gaming devices in a way that caters primarily to a niche segment of the market doesn't make sense. At the very least, if the anal log autists aren't ready to give up their garbage input method, then hair-trigger switches that allow analog triggers to behave like digital buttons need to start becoming the norm.

>this niche hobby is solved
This, but unironically. I have a Portal and see no reason to buy another 16:9 Android handheld anytime soon. If the Nova is just as good, I'm done wasting money trying to fight the "right" handhelds. There's nothing I want to play that can't be handled by one of the two.
>>
There's GBAs, DSs, PSPs, etc from way back when that still work by just replacing the battery and maybe the buttons.
What's the expected lifespan of one of these retro handhelds? Does anyone still have a working one from 5+ years ago? Is this hobby still too new to know?

Ips instead of oled so it doesn't fry your eyes. Thank you for coming to my irritating talk.

Will one of these work for the tf card being read on computer? Or does it need to be a certain type?

my RG505 is still going great, almost 4 years old. not sure what the lifespan on the cheapo R36 stuff would be though, or anything with hinges.

Bought a Gameboy Color with a fucked up LCD (probably just needs the polarizer fixed) and a non functioning speaker ($2 fix) for 6000 Yen. I'm sure if I would have bought it before I could get it a lot cheaper, but oh well. You know how it is. The best time to buy was yesterday and it's not going to be any cheaper tomorrow. IPS mod/case replacement is what I want to do but I wanted to make sure I got something that wasn't in horrific condition.

Another bonus is that the battery cover matches my childhood GBC which I don't have with me but it's in the possession of my mom. It will be reunited with me someday. I swapped the purple one with my friend's yellow one when I was 11 because I was 11 and that's just the kind of thing I thought was cool and made my GBC different.

all of 'em before 4 obviously. i've played them all but always like an excuse to play last raven or silent line again.

i bought one and quickly returned it because it was pretty ass. the off center screen and how thick it is really sucks.

So what's the point of these devices or IPS mods in general?

And do you drive your car by slamming the accelerator til it's completely to the metal and then when you reach nearby traffic or a junction you disengage the accelerator and proceed to slam your foot on the brake until it's fully depressed? This is just assuming that you drive an automatic because if it's a manual then presumably you're burning out clutches daily.
Calling analog triggers which allow you granular pressure based input a regression is stupid and you know.
