I want to replay OoT for old time's sake, I loved this game as a child but man as an adult the game is so unappealing. I'm not saying I'm "le epic adult" that only plays slop with blood, sex and guns, I recently went through Mario 64 again and enjoyed it a lot more than when I was a child, making a lot more use of the more complex jumps.
But OoT just such a pain, I practically have to force myself to make progress, is it because it's an awful game to reply or because it's only good for kids?
>there is no sense of wonder anymore because I know where to go next and what area comes next, this wasn't a problem in Mario 64 though
>the puzzles are so easy they feel like an insult to my intelligence
>not only the puzzles are easy but the game is slow so you will spent most of your time in dungeons going through toddler tier puzzles slowly instead of doing any combat or exploring
>exploring? Oh yeah exploring, the game's actually incredibly linear full of flags that halt your progress and npcs you must talk to advance with little exploring to do so, most of the exploring I did as a child was in my head and I was just wasting time not making any real progress.
How can I enjoy Ocarina of Tine again anons?
>>
>>12723757
there is a remake coming out just for you
>>
>>12723762
I fail to see how would they fix all those problems without changing the game entirely
>>
>>12723757
In general I find it really hard to replay non-action games. There are so many RPGs and Adventure games I loved that I wish I could experience again but I get so bored and end up quitting 1/4 of the way through.
>>
>>12723757
I've tried replaying OoT two times in the last decade but it's too damn boring to finish. A couple of hours is good enough for the nostalgia hit.
>>
Not sure if this is bait or not, probably is, but while OP claims OOT has "puzzles that offend my intelligence" I want to say that I felt that way with modern AAA slop that's supposed to be for adults.
Tried series like Uncharted for example, which are games lauded as being for adults and stuff. Its puzzles makes Zelda look like sophisticated genius stuff in comparison
>>
>>12723757
Today I will remind them that Ocarina of Time's score is fake

Holy vindicated, I called that shit.
>>12713726
>>
Stop liking Ocarina of Time
>>
>>12723757
Ocarina of Time is a children's game that you remembered. Half the fun is figuring stuff out as a kid.
>>
>>12723757
Check out ROM hax, I guess. There was clearly a trend to make popular Nintendo games easier after the "NES hard" years. More content made accessible to young players. The music and locales can still be enjoyable if you play every so often. I think the youthful aesthetic of Mario and Zelda has a lot to do with Miyamoto's childlike wonder and creative personality. Some people go through a mindset of only playing "mature" stuff, but I'd say you're right about wanting an overall fun experience. Grimdark or not.
>>
>>12723849
You're over estimating the average adult.
Most people trying to play OoT today still rely on guides.
I mean, look at today's AAA stuff. And that's all supposed to be for adults, too.
>>
>>12723860
I've seen people swear up and down it's the best Zelda game, then they go and play it and get all turned around and frustrated by the mechanics, but they still try to pass it off as the best. Some kind of stockholme syndrome.
>>
>>12723860
>Most people trying to play OoT today still rely on guides.
zoomers are not people
>>
>>12723860
It’s always funny to see Soulsfags especially struggle with OoT.
>>
>>12723870
>do you even like retro games?
I like to play them and evaluate them, and sometimes my view doesn't align with some millennial's childhood memories. Deal with it.
>>
>>12723903
Plenty of millennials hate old stuff though.
Plenty of non-millennials like retro games.
It's not a generational war. It's a culture war in general, and it's not organic.
>>
>>12723874
At least people videogames, /v/ is 50% coomer shit and 50% shitposts, this thread wouldn't get 5 replies in /v/
>>
>>12723912
Still, if you could see the catalog of 2012/2013 /vr/ you'd shit your pants on how different this place was

Nah, I typically enjoy OOT runs every 5-6 years or so. Same way I sit down and play RE4 again for the 100th time. I just sit down and im like "damn this game is good as fuck"

You could try romhacks and randomizers. Have you played Master Quest? Playing Master Quest on SoH with the double enemy damage from 3ds MQ is legit challenging, especially if play with hyper monsters on. Bats will constantly fuck up your wooden shield unless you are perfect.

>>12723908
>It's a culture war

Not going to derail the thread with too much OT, but if you have to ask why a board that centers on 20th century media could be seen as something that's not okay in 2026, then you should look at the state of the world in 2026 a bit.
I'll leave it at that.
>>
>>12723908
>it's not organic.
it's the most organic thing ever, you just want things to be inorganic forever because this is your hugbox
>>
>>12723932
What? Not enough tranny and gay nigger shit in old media?
>>
>>12723937
>it's the most organic thing ever
If you say so
>hugbox
Strange, the whole "hey guys, i'm not the only one that got filtered by retro games, right? right?" is what actually feels hugboxy.
Old /vr/ just discussed games, made effortposting with OC scans of rare books and material, even got unreleased undumped games to get official releases.
Modern /vr/ is just sad.
>>
>>12723932
>if you have to ask why a board that centers on 20th century media could be seen as something that's not okay in 2026
Wtf are you on about
>>
>>12723957
nta, but a lot of discussion here culminates in the argument that a game has aged poorly, like whatever is out today plays so much better than any retro game
>>
>>12723959
I'm asking anon what he means and you come over to reply "I'm not him but here's some irrelevant garbage"
>>
>>12723965
or you can continue pretending that this board is fine and every retro game ever is total dogshit, you do you
>>
>>12723975
And you can keep being mentally ill.
>>
>>12723860
Games back then were purposefully obtuse in order to sell guides. Modern games are much more honest.
>>
>>12723917
Was 4chan even around back then or are you exaggerating?
>>
>>12723942
So what's the problem? as time marches forward and you play better games, naturally the old ones standout as archaic as they are
>>
>>12723975
Not every retro game is dogshit though, just most of them. Frankly I am tired of seeing people say the Gamecube was great, that it had the best controller ever, and the jackoff games the console got first party are any good. That's Gamecube, imagine how bad the games that came before are at that rate
>>
>>12723912
It's rare, but /v/ sometimes does get decent threads going. Right now there's an FF6 thread nearing 300 posts that's largely civil and on topic with little coomer shit.
>>
>>12723767
who said they weren't going to change the game entirely...
it's definitely getting the ff7 remake treatment
>>
>>12724046
Good, imagine Ocarina as a proper open world game
>>
>>12723786
Yeah. Atleast Link doesn't talk to himself about the puzzle solution I guess.
>>
>>12723860
People (non-gamers) still think you need to pack your toothbrush before embarking on a game. By that I mean, they think they'll need a guide to handhold them so they "don't miss the good stuff" even though they never got it through their lid that none of that guide stuff is necessary, and it detracts from an experience. Time is their precious resource they could be spend grinding their normie dailies with.
Nothing has broken that conditioning because they're not actually that big fans of video games in the first place.
>>
>>12724052
Funny because OoT is the early poster boy for handholding
>>
>>12723757
Play through Master Quest if you haven't already.

Play a ROM hack.

Play a different Zelda game.

you jest but that's what I want, why the fuck wouldnt everyone want it unless they're retarded, it's the expression of Zelda as an entire 40 year spanning franchise, it's what everyone felt and thought of Ocarina of Time on release, do it for real this time, now that it's being re-created from the ground up
>>
>>12723757
>want to replay OoT for old time's sake, I loved this game as a child but man as an adult the game is so unappealing

Do zoomers not know how clearly obvious it is when they're larping? You obviously have not played the fucking game in your life, and made a weird thread with a psuedo header to get (yous)

every fucking thread on this board is like this, my god
>>
Fucking dumb zoomers
>>
>>12723757
>>12723781
>>12723849

I've beat OOT probably 10'ish times total, and 9 of those were between 1999 and 2006 with me doing a run around 2014 and I'm playing it over again right now. It always seems funner in practice than it actually is. It's a slog, so much running around to do what feels like menial shit for small rewards. I just finished the forest temple last night and honestly I'm kinda done.
>>
>>12723757
a significant part of mario's appeal is execution/gameplay. however, a significant part of a zelda game's appeal is discovery and figuring out how to overcome obstacles, and the progression of them (figuring out what key to which lock, and the progression of gathering them all).

now, with both games, exploration is a huge factor for 3d. as kids, it was incredible and novel. as adults, it does not hold the same magic, as we generally expect purpose for space existing, on top of already knowing everything. with mario, knowing where the stars are may take some of the magic away, but the execution of getting there is still fun. with oot... the execution is a fucking slog. combat isnt fun, everything is slow, the "puzzles" are a joke, and exploration is worthless emptiness.

oot doesnt hold up at all. its a primitive 3d game and aged like milk.
>>
>>12723908
>culture
the only culture im "warring" against is the disingenuous discussion of video games. like old games is fine. talking about old games is fine. baselessly worshiping something by putting it on an unassailable pedestal, shutting down any actual discussion or critique of it, when it is so obviously flawed and does not hold up well needs to be stopped. and retards like you that call honest and justified critique "hate" are part of the problem. retards like you that have to push everything to sensationalist extremes, where something is either the best thing in existence or utter shit and nothing in between, are the troll perpetrators. there is no "culture war" other than the one that you are fabricating with your retarded bullshit and reasonable people resist and dont play along with.
>>
>>12724737
If you are OP, there's no real critique there, just vague shallow subjectivities
>It's easy
>It's boring
Wow so hardcore and adult, you are very critique.
>>
>>12724737
i couldn't imagine being so fucking mindbroken over people liking ocarina of time, holy fucking shit
>>
>>12724754
it's a valid complaint, man. especially when it comes to oot, which has a deep and complex swordfighting system and procedes to use none of it
>>
>>12724754
not op, but its not like op's post was a 4 hour youtube essay script. its TOO easy and boring to the point of being unengaging. theres no threat, theres no challenge, theres no depth. >>12724786
i dont have a problem with people liking it. people that like something can usually recognize and admit its flaws, but still like it anyway. the people im talking about are the brainless zealots that outright deny any flaw exists. there is a significant difference.
>>
>>12724804
>zealots
about fucking time the oot schizophrenic revealed himself
>>
>>12723757
Yeah I tried playing this on emulator and got bored within 4 minutes

It's the sort of game you play before the internet on a crt in the 90s

Start screen music was good though
>>
>>12724809
>he isnt a zealot like me
>he must be a schizophrenic
all you do is continue to prove me right. you're really not beating the allegations.
>>
>>12723757
Every time I start replaying OoT, I play for about an hour and then switch to MM.
>>
>>12725680
this but emphasis on the switch part
>>
>>12723757
>exploring? Oh yeah exploring, the game's actually incredibly linear full of flags that halt your progress and npcs you must talk to advance with little exploring to do so, most of the exploring I did as a child was in my head and I was just wasting time not making any real progress.
That's actually bullshit and a skill issue on your part. You are just going where you think you're supposed to go and missing all the alternative ways of going about things that the game absolutely has. It's a really bloody well designed game in this respect and does a good job of constantly throwing out hints that you might want to go somewhere else and do something different to possibly find something.
>>
>>12723767
I fail to see why you'd think that would be needed at all. The dungeons could easily be made much harder, which would involve a semi-overhaul, but since they're mostly self contained that should be very doable.

The overworld is fantastic, but just needs more stuff to do in general to reach it's full potential. As it it the game is otherwise miles ahead of 99% of other games in so many ways.
>>
>>12725753
>just go into the forest dungeon grab the bow and leave for no reason
>>
>>12724795
>and procedes to use none of it
That suchs, but there are several full scale mods now that pretty much rework the combat and enemies to make them harder and more fun to fight. It's really stupidly cool what is actually possible within the game's systems, to the point that it makes modern action games feel redundant.
>>
>>12725790
>just go into the forest dungeon grab the bow and leave for no reason
That's how I play the games.

Yes, we can see it's you, making the same wrong arguments that people have BTFO time after time.
>>
>>12725819
Long meandering chart
>have to do the three dungeons in order
>have to get chicken have to wake talon
>have to sneak past guards
>have to do the three dungeons in order
>have to do all five dungeons
>have to do ganon's tower

It's so non linear if you, just leave a dungeon to complete later you guise
>>
>>12723757
>the puzzles are so easy they feel like an insult to my intelligence
I've never understood this idea. I've never read something or watched something or played something that was easy or simple and felt insulted. The piece of media doesn't know who I am, why would I ever possible be insulted?
>>
>>12723757
I treat OoT as the prototype for Majora's Mask, which is the better game of the two. i'm not going to shit on Ocarina, but it was made before a lot of 3D games had a real standard and it shows in how it's designed and plays. It's the ancestor of all modern open world games but coming back to it after playing Dragma Balls, Nier Replicant and other Zelda-like modern open world exploration games with modern conveniences (like the modern Zelda games) really brings home how archaic the game is to play today. I don't think it's bad so much as game design left this game in the dust.

>>12724060
You actually see a lot of that mentality too on even /v/. A lot of people really don't know what they like very well.
>>
File: asaasd.jpg (242 KB, 1366x768)
242 KB JPG
Ocarina of Time is better on the 3DS but i love the original Nintendo 64 versions of Ocarina and Majora for their creppy atmosphere like the Forest Temple the Shadow Temple the zombies or the original Majora Mask a lot of that stuff was more chilling than things in games like Silent Hill or Resident Evil of course that wasnt Nintendo original intention but the atmosphere of the Nintendo 64 versions bordering on terrifying was incredible i wish the Zelda games were like the Nintendo 64 versions with a surreal and unsettling atmosphere Twilight Princess came close to capturing that feeling
>>
Play Master Quest and play the hack roms its freaking fun to play the randomizer or play with a Malon or Zelda skin and do a speed run
>>
>>12725912
>I've never understood this idea. I've never read something or watched something or played something that was easy or simple and felt insulted. The piece of media doesn't know who I am, why would I ever possible be insulted?
A game that plays itself defeats the purpose. Challenge isn't something you can just disregard or brush aside. It's the entire premise as to why we play games.
>>
Play Majora Mask the better game the Nintendo 64 version
>>
>>12723860
i'd probably still use a guide to get the skooltoolas tbhdesu
>>
>>12727008
>do a speed run
i recently did a glitchless version of a speedrun and it was really fun. beat the whole game 100% in 12 hours.
>>
>>12727012
I understand the concept that an easy game is a bad game, what I don't understand is why anyone would interpret that as the game insulting them.
I've never felt offended or demeaned when I played a game that turned out to be bad.
