how do the quake vets feel about Dawn? 7 maps in, playing through Ironwail and I think it's fantastic. great map design and the soundtrack is very moody.
I like Blood.
>>12754634Pretty good so far, better than Machine and I thought that was great.
>>12754643nice, I just did that map! Did you get the secret the open the bars behind you?
>>12754634Not enough new stuff to justify how long each map is, but otherwise okay. The upgrade gimmick also seems half-baked and I can't be fucked to play through it all again for a new boss fight or whatever.
>>12754634I dig it
>>12754714bbbbbbbbbbbased
>>12754704Very pretty, and a rare example of AMC looking good as a still. Most of the time shit's so busy that it looks better in motion.
>>12754714Why is "I'm" one of the words? The non-ASCII apostrophe?
>>12754714Bases. Has Duke ever been in the middle?

>>12754813>It's the best Build Engine game along with the Duke, also fuck Shadow WarriorSuch needless hate.
Now what do I do after finishing Dawn
I beat Cthon and the game doesn'tt, just puts me back to the main menu like any other Quake episode. Am I just supposed to start from scratch to get Bloody Nightmare since I missed it on the first set of maps or do I need to just use the console and warp to the maps? Very confusing even after looking it up online.
>>12754828*game doesn't loop, jesus I can't type today
>>12754641Better than Kool-Aid.
>>12754825Consume something other than corposlop.
Quake 2 is still objectively shit, I don't care hipsters have started to believe it was good.
>>12754869Seethe, Quake 2 was a good game when it was new, and Romero said as such.
>>12754869I was there when it was new, Quake 2 was widely regarded as a good game, it's later hipster revisionists who insisted it was bad.
I played Quake 2 only on PS1 back then, so I never considered it bad.
>>12754869>Liking Quake 2 means you're a hipsterI wonder what's the logic behind this.
>>12754887I've always preferred the PS1 version to PC for some reason. The campaign felt to be an improvement. I played both versions around the time of release.
>>12754813>fuck Shadow Warriorwhy? It's brety gud

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xX018RLZzdAThoughts on D2ICO?
>be me>breeze through beyond belief first two maps>die a couple times on map 3 to the same shamblerHard mode does not mess around. Lol
what's the best method of recording a doom demo file
>>12754959I dropped it during Waffletown (map 3) cause of lag - was trying to play through it with Highway Acceleroid Booster on recommendation for a good city map set to play Highway Acceleroid Booster from /vr/ with but that requires GZDoom and once you get to Waffletown the maps and enemy count get too large for GZDoom even with a high spec machine - was playable but noticable frame drops. Meant to go back through with a different mod that I can use Nugget/Cherry etc for. I did like the three maps I played.
>>12755084DoomLauncher or a similar program makes it easy to do.
Abysm X thoughts:>I like the void maps - they feel a bit more high energy than the rest so far. I've thought the other maps could be a bit too empty. you can feel the hiatuses/troubled dev cycle>bosses have been better since they were using stuff from Eviternity I noticed - a lot more projectile spam like Spirit Falcon's bosses got up to so not bad>there needs to be more elite enemies to shake combat up>I don't think we are ever getting a final weapon as strong/ammo efficient as the final staff at the end of Abysm 2 + Pharaoh's Judgement ever again>setting my craft command to R has made strength/dex a hell of a lot more viable and I moved my item scrolls to mouse 4 + 5 with mouse 3 for firing so I can rapid fire scrolls mid fight - really made the spells way way more useful since they didn't offer hot keys for the potions/scrolls from the menu and I didn't feel like checking my inventory and binding it in console directly>even thought I wanted to do a strength build I still leveled my int because the Raven/Serpent Staffs are too good>I do want to force myself to use Dex more just to see the scaling on it so maybe I'll do that on an Abysm 2 replay
https://files.catbox.moe/q2y3vr.pk3For no reason whatsoever, bugfix version of Babel monsters that I've been playing with for a few years now.>took care of several random VM aborts (revenant, cacodemon, and archvile all come to mind)>fixed a multiplayer desync with masterminds/cyberdemons>fixed truncation warnings.I think it should be up to date with anon's last official version but can't guarantee it. It's been a while. Have not touched the gameplay or balance in any capacity.
Does anyone have any good melee focused wads/total conversions for Doom, Quake or any build engine game?<----Insert GMOTA image I'm too lazy to look up here
>>12755171You could try Mega Man ZDoom and just use the melee weapons.https://mengo329.itch.io/mmzdoom
>>12755171Walpurgis as Baratus, Parias, or Illitheya.
>>12755275>>12755284Is there some form of repo or area where people vote on what maps they think work best with some gameplay mods? Kind of like how everyone recommends Diablous Ex with Hideous Destructor or how I personally think Going Down pairs really well with project brutality
>find rune of sacrifice>takes me back to map 7 when I just beat it and map 8>restarts at 0 killsAre we serious? I'm going to bed.
>>12755347Do you not understand what the word "sacrifice" means? I haven't got that far so I'm really not sure what is supposed to happen :/
>>12755347>>takes me back to map 7 when I just beat it and map 8>he ran straight back into the portal that explicitly says "you've already been here"
>>12754828>I beat Cthon and the game doesn'tt, just puts me back to the main menu like any other Quake episode. You didn't beat him on Bloody Nightmare.> Am I just supposed to start from scratch to get Bloody Nightmare since I missed it on the first set of maps or do I need to just use the console and warp to the maps?Do neither of these things, just use the hub to re-access the map. You'll have to play through Veils of the Old Ones again, what a burden.
>>12755306Plutonia goes with anything. She's a complete slut lmao
>>12755306Seriously though no there isn't. It was a frequent topic of conversation in /vr/doom history, what gameplay mods and mapsets pair well together, but I don't recall any definitive lists being made.
>>12754714>Quake betterI've always thought so.
Peril has to be the most endearing and autistic FPS mod I've seen in a while.>The readme goes off on tangents about the industrial revolution and starts talking about the modder's hometown and the history there mid-excuse plot description>There are 19 fuckhuge levels and lots of it are just places that look cool or weird missable set pieces, so you get lost often. These things take hours.>I had no idea where the difficulty selection was, turns out it's at the end of map 2 when you invade the evil corporation's slipgate complex and can then choose how hard the rest of the mod will be>What the fuck are these gun models? Why does the SSG look like a LMG?>There are vehicle and elevator rides that take forever but it's clearly intentional due to the atmosphere>Utterly illogical progression at times, you have to try and think like the modder occasionally since shit sometimes makes no fucking sense>Why yes, the HUD mugshot is Nagatoro for no fucking reason, why do you ask? (I assume it's a placeholder that just stuck)>Weird and adorable voice lines and story bits voiced by the modder and his friends>He's taken elements and textures from fucking EVERYTHING. Half-life poison Headcrabs? Stuff from Hexen? Darkseed point and click games? I'm seeing stuff from all kinds of IPsMap 3 had a boat section where you pass a pirate ship trying to sink your boat and a derelict ship with a shambler in it while you merrily sail past this optional bullshit to the actual objective across the ocean, and this is the standard Peril experience from what I can tell. It's fucking amazing in a batshit crazy kind of way and I'm surprised it's not that well known.
>Try Nightmare on the Kex Quake remaster out of curiosity>Assumed the only difference was 50 healthNope, it removes the retarded spammy monster behaviour entirely so they fight normally. I like this, nightmare used to feel a bit easy due to monsters becoming "turrets", so this is an improvement.
>>12755364It's amazing mod. Btw first map has a bar with strippers. Tons Duke mods do that, but this might be the only Quake mod that does it.
>>12754634How do I pirate it? I'm not giving any money to Microsoft.
>>12754634I really liked it. People are complaining about bloody nightmare and that you have to replay the whole thing again to get it, but it's not mandatory, the secret boss is shit and the ending is just another "WE SALUTE YOU" so why bother? It's just there if you really, really want to replay it on a much harder difficulty.I'm thinking about upgrading Ironwail to run it on that in the future, since playing with Kex was shit, but otherwise it was 10/10.
Okay so if the blood shotgun is a normal shotty with a faster fire rate, what's the deal with the super axe?
>>12755364>Map 3 had a boat section where you pass a pirate ship trying to sink your boat and a derelict ship with a shambler in it while you merrily sail past this optional bullshit to the actual objective across the ocean, and this is the standard Peril experience from what I can tell. You can also just ignore the boat entirely and swim there yourself. There's fuck-all in the water to interfere.
>>12755364I remember I heard Nagatoro is there because his son asked for it. Might be hallucinating but there even was a forum post. It's probably my next target after I'm done re-re-re-re-replaying DotM.
>>12755574That's it? I was expecting it to mimic Doom's shotgun.
>>12755603Wouldn't that be a downgrade in Quake's case? Unless of course it deals higher damage alongside the slower firerate.
>>12755605I would expect higher damage, yes.
>>12755570It's not the bloody nightmare that requires multiple replays that is the problem, it's the whole new bloody shotgun weapon that is locked behind beating the whole bloody nightmare thing and at this point you probably had more than enough replays.
>>12755602
>>12755171Continuing to shill Reliquary. It is not melee focused, but the axe does more damage on hit, and it knocks enemies back, allowing for more strategizing such as knocking an enemy into lava, or otherwise avoiding more damage than you would in vanilla because you can finesse knocking back an ogre before his chainsaw has a chance to hit you. It makes Quake that much more engaging and enjoyable.
>>12755171Hedon has Berserker difficulty designed around pure melee combat, it's fun, I tried it once.AMC TC has a dedicated melee character, not as fun as Hedon but if you somehow figure out how that character works maybe you'll like it
>>12754714>romero nice version>yes okay john>god dunno>separate niggur>>12755362>quake better>doom bestI think cloud has spoken.
>>12754714>Sandy hardHi, Sandy. I hope you ar-OH MY GOD
Eviternity 2 map 15Quite a step up in difficulty (ignoring the secret map).In this fight, if you're a sensible person you don't fight the cybers and arachno's simultaneously (they are triggered separately), but I decided to yolo it and somehow got away with it.
>>12754714>Slipseer tried>Chthon enhanced>awesome support amazing>dead git>thats art
>>12754619how is btsx project?

>>12755364>What the fuck are these gun models?A good chunk are from Malice, the others are from some weapon skin pack I found on the moddb.>>12755665I don’t think it deals the same amount of damage as Reliquary, but Tomb of Thunder also has knockback on its axe, tons of fun. Last hitting enemies with the axe is also a means of recovering health on skill 3 (since it ticks down to 25 like in Doom 3).I’d recommend checking it out once/if you want to try something after Reliquary.

>Peril as I have named it only came about as a lockdown project for my son so we could play coop over a network. It actually turned out way better than we imagined, so I made the choice to make it into a mod to share with others.
I've just replayed the original doom 1 on ultra violence and the main challenge was running out of ammo. Is that normal? Is uv just balanced around 100% secret discovery?
>>12755831I'm more impressed that you beat Doom 1 on Ultra Violence to be honest
>>12755831>Is that normal? No, there's lots of ammo. You are probably trying to fight the monsters from too far away. Doom is in many ways a melee game. Most of the weapons with one obvious exception work best at close range.
>>12755831Why do people even play classic FPS games at all if they don't want to actively engage with secrets? It's like dragging your ass to the other side of the town because that's where the only good pizzeria in your town is, only to order some fries and cola there.
>>12755836This post just lit up my pistol start PTSD from fisting so many pinkies without berserk. At a certain point I learned I should've just been running ahead to find a shotgun or something.

>>12755843I don't mean literally melee as in fist and chainsaw only. I mean all the weapons except the rocket launcher work best if you run up to your target, shoot, and quickly back off.
>>12755838>Why do people even play classic FPS games at all if they don't want to actively engage with secrets?Because classic fpses'ses's do fast arcade action just as well as dungeon crawl adventuring and some niggers prefer to play that way. There was a dweeb with a baby avatar on Doomworld named peter kelehererelteretlr or some shit who used to rage at having to find secrets. thought it was a waste of time or something. he was a nigger with a cock up his ass for having that opinion but I respect it.
>>12755835Was it supposed to be some sort of great challenge?
>>12755838>Why do people even play classic FPS games at all if they don't want to actively engage with secrets? They represent a percent of the overall experience, and the skill in ‘finding them’ is varied. Some people just have to resort to wall humping after completing a map.
>>12755816Probably id being pressed for time that led to it being vestigial.

>>12756214Just this, I wanna make things that are funny to me, but If I see someone else happy for what I shared, then that will make my day better honestly.I know that it's not the best, but it's funny for me, and at least it's funny for others in the end

If I wanted to make a Doom 2 wad but use my own textures, music and possibly sound effects, is it good to go with Slade + UDB? Slade to make the modified wad file, and then tossing it into UDB to make the levels.I know Slade is also a level editor too but I've already got used to UDB, it's just that UDB doesn't have a baked in file editor.

>>12758618If you were to make a direct comparison of Blood's and Fury's enemies you'd find a lot of similarities in design. Cultists to cyborgs and monsters to weird machines. The only point Blood has going for it is the tightness of it's design compared to more run and gun dumb shootan of Ion's, cultists also have soulful voiceovers with it's own made up language, Tolkien would be proud. In conclusion, Shadow Warrior is the best. Ninjas can jump, hide behind cover, use almost all weapons Wang has and the Shadow Ninja is my favourite enemy in all of fps

Why is 5.1 surround sound such a rare feature in Quake source ports? Even the fancy new NightDive Kux Quake lacks it. It's basically FTEQW or bust here. Doom's in a lot better standing here with *ZDoom and Woof/Nugget and more having it. Raze luckily has this covered for most Build games, but it has voxel bugs in Blood and can't load Ion Fury, and of course it lacks it too.
>>12758937>Why is 5.1 surround sound such a rare feature in Quake source ports?Probably too nuanced and autistic for the average sourceport developer. I don't know if you can calculate sound falloff and whatnot as cleanly in a Quake map as you can for Doom. >FTEQWIt's a shame that engine has so many cool features, but the defaults are abysmal dogshit and it has so many compatibility issues.
>>12758937>5.1Everyone with surround support is focused 7.1 nowadays.Ironwail supports 7.1, I'd expect it to do 5.1 by just dropping a couple of channels.

Either than or it only supports 7.1 not 5.1, in which case lmao buy more speakers I guess.
>>12759047Mm, doubt it. 99.9% of the time anything that supports 7.1 simply downsamples it to 5.1, and I see no evidence whatsoever other than your posts that it has it at all. Bet you just have some duplication going on in your setup that's meming you on it being 'surround'.

>>12758937I can't speak for quake, but i've never understood the point of surround anywhere but the cinema.2 channel headphones are far superior for games and personal film/tv viewing, and the sort of games you're playing couch-coop with friends aren't cinematic soundscapes. Is there an everyday benefit or is it just autism?

>>12759906I really like the Nightdive nightmare mode>removes the stupid and easily outsmarted nightmare AI>Just makes it hard with half healthIt's a good system.
>>12759932It's actually far more immersive and helpful in games, especially ones with a first person camera, than it is for any movie. It's incredibly arbitrary how it's set up in movies, but in a game like Quake or System Shock 2 it not only immerses you into the scene, it has gameplay benefits of letting you know when a shot, enemy, or door sound is coming from behind you. I don't know how this isn't self-evident. Are you capable of envisioning an apple?

You know how 5.1 and 7.1 interpolate positional sounds? You can get most of that benefit with 2 channels already, and a cheap pair of headphones are going to offer as good or better positional sound than an average lounge-room setup with a 10 times more expensive surround system.I'm happy to hear an actual clear benefit of a surround setup for ever-day game playing, i.e., in a regular lounge room rather than a room outfitted for acoustic testing.

What do you think of freedoom art direction?Inb4: this one is not from it.
>>12760616It has an art direction?
>>12760616Looks like something some degenerate discord zoomer goons off to.
>>12760457>\Steam\>.oggYou did not play it.
>>12760616It's well documented that Doom had a development of about 1 year and about 2 dedicated artists, Adrian Carmack and Kevin Cloud (also Gregor Punchatz kind of). Freedoom has art contributions from dozens of people and a dev cycle of like 2 decades now but still generally fails to look as good as Doom. This is a demonstration of why using real artists is important. If you try to replace them with a miscellanea of uncommitted contributors the end product is likely to look like a clusterfuck, even if some of the stuff they add individually looks good. Ideally you'd also have a single visually minded person leading the aesthetic direction to begin with i.e. not programmer art. Free software tends to look ugly in general, but it's usually not a big deal because they're not trying to make a game.

>>12760817Don't go too hard on him, he might be one of those Gen X'ers who fell hard for the home theater trend way back when.
>>12759667thx negro
>>12760848Alright, fair. But yeah, lots of objectively really good assets in Freedoom, but also a crushing lack of direction and cohesion. (Along with the old 'Replacing A Perfectly Good Asset When There's Still Shitty Ones That Need To Go (Again)').
>>12760493>I was thinking of the nightdive nightmare mode and how it took the better ideas from copper when it came to the monsters. If you enjoyed the turreted fast monster behavior on skill 3 (and also wanted to play it as it was initially created) then it's not a "better idea".What I find interesting is how it took old Copper's health limit and made it every skill level's problem, even though you can upgrade it - but then they went extreme on ammo drops: They're not just "limited" like they were in the old version of Copper, they're gone entirely AND they start at a more limited cap.

Are there doom wads where the player speed is altered? Like you don't go as fast as regular Doom guy
The other guy is right that headphones are a cope. I have speakers and headphones and music sounds glorious on speakers, on headphones you get a poorer simulacra of the actual experience where the bass can't EVER be reproduced as accurately just because of the law of physics and acoustics. Music that doesn't swirl in the air and surrounds you is just not the same thing. That said many people have bitchy neighbours/family/roomates/etc and can't be blasting speakers so all they can listen to is headphones. I have a bitchy neighbour too and I also have to listen to music mostly on headphones unfortunately
>>12761086None of this is wrong. That being said, good virtual surround through headphones can be fucking amazing for gaming.
>>12760986That's a jar... You know what to do
>>12761126>good virtual surround through headphones can be fucking amazing for gaming.Yeah which is why him thinking speakers are better for gaming let alone for positional audio is complete bull. I only have a pair of Sennheiser HD598s with an amp/dac but feel like the Garrador from RE4 on steroids compared to really any speaker setup. The latter is obviously better for blaring your tunes or watching a good cinematic movie though.
>>12761138>I only have a pair of Sennheiser HD598s with an amp/dac butI mean those are open and have angled drivers so theoretically they're solid for virtual surround.

Is there a template somewhere for statusbars? Including widescreen?
there's nothing wrong with quake on kex and I'm tired of pretending otherwise
Throw me some theme and midi for a 666 map
>>12762245The simplest widescreen statusbar is replacing GRNROCK with another 64x64 texture. That way you also retain vanilla compatibility
>>12761204>brightness 0.5>gamma 1.8yep, its kino. The question is, should I keep on the texture filtering?
>>12762261I'm not mapping for Vanilla, your advice is useless to me.
>>12760704>This is a demonstration of why using real artists is important. If you try to replace them with a miscellanea of uncommitted contributors the end product is likely to look like a clusterfuck, even if some of the stuff they add individually looks good.I can't argue about quality of art assets in Doom, but I can agrue about them not being a clusterfuck.Doom is a game about blasting demons, but you have brains with faces piloting spider mechs. You are shooting a traditional looking big red demon blasting magical fire at you, then turn around and see a large round levitating maw cyclops creature spewing lightning balls. Imps don't look like a typical demon or imp too, if you look at them with clear eyes. You may try to defend Doom, but the question about how arachnotrons are related to demons is as old as the game. What I want to say is that hiring an actual artist is not a cure.
>>12762315Doom had 3 artists working together on making its graphical assets, and while there's variety in design and even style, there is a consistency in aesthetic and talent.
>you just took a 1 hour detour to kill a massive alien creature, how about you do it again in the very next chapterwhat were they thinking?
>>12762186I didn't mind the pallette swapping in the original game because they were still easy to visibly identify. Wanton Destruction has chinamen in suits instead of the default ninjas, and their hat being a different color isn't quite as visible at a distance.

>>12762451The only thing that changes appearance-wise are their pants and bracers. The torsos and heads are the first things you see, so immediately identifying which is which isn’t as quick as I’d like it.But more than that is just the lack of effort in both Blood and Shadow Warrior. The Doom standard has the zombieman and shotgunners have drastically different color scheme and appearances: One is bald and has a shotgun. The chaingunner maintains the bald but has a different skin tone, is noticably redder, wider, and carries a large chaingun. All the cultists only vary in robe color, and all the evil ninjas only vary in pants and bracer color.
Eviternity 2 map 18Pretty stressful map. Lots of cramped encounters, you pretty much have to take it slow
>>12762705>shooting that many rockets when a pain elemental is that close to youOh shit nigger what are you doing
>>12762710>can't fight pain elementals with a rocket launcher.I've been doing this for years with modest success. I still frequently screw it up but rarely die from splash damage outright and I make sure there's plenty of health remaining in case of mistakes. So it's not the totally forbidden insane strategy you make it out to be. When you have space to run around in, it's quite reasonable.

>>12762728>I've been doing this for years with modest successSame. You absolutely CAN fight meatballs with rockets (and it can be very effective, splash damage doing its part against lost souls), but it's risky and you can only do it where you have wide fields of movement. If you couldn't currently sidestep the line of a flying lost soul from its mouth, then that's too dangerous and it's a guaranteed facerocket. If the lost souls end up behind you, that can also be dangerous if they can block your movement.Perhaps the best opportunity to rocket a meatball is if it's begun infighting with someone else, so when it's distracted, you can sneak in a whole volley of rockets and get his ass.
