What do you think about Retroachievements? I've found it to be a decent way to motivate myself to finish games instead of drop them, even when I'm sitting on folders of thousands of ROMs. There might be issues I'm unaware of so far but it seems pretty easy to just leave Retroarch logged in and enjoy the dopamine bumps now and then.
You don't need achievements. You don't need thousands of ROMs you'll never be interested in.You don't need to be "logged in" to play an emulator.Tone it down and make a short list of videogames you really want to play. Get rid of everything else.
>>12757131theyre gay and so is anyone that uses them. just play the fucking games.
>>>/trash/
>>12757162I've done that before, lacked the motivation to finish anything or inspiration to play anything new. Finally got to playing Super Mario RPG because it was highlighted this week and people were actively discussing it.
>>12757169Well if it motivates you to play games, I guess you can have them. But are you playing these games because you like the games or because you like the achievements?
>>12757175I'm picking them up because I like retro games. the achievements are an extra reason to not drop something I'm enjoying because something else caught my eye.Even shorter games. Years ago, I played Outrun and got annoyed at how strict it is with how much time you have to spare, so I gave up on trying and just moved onto a different game. When I picked it up this time I stuck with it until I not just beat 1 path, but beat every level, because the site acted as an easy checklist of which ones I've beaten and which I haven't.
We had an internet outage in my area for about five days. My son invited a friend over to play video games, but the kid said he couldn’t play at his house. I asked if that was something with newer consoles like the PS5, and he explained that while he could play offline, the achievements on his Xbox wouldn’t unlock or might be bugged, and he didn’t want to risk it.That was hella stupid.
>>12757131achievements and trophies are one of the things i hate about modern games, so no, I don't want that crap in my old ass games
>>12757131It’s a cool idea but I don’t want it. Just play what you enjoy
>>12757198Yeah at that level it gets silly, but it does hit on the head of achievements being a good motivator. You just need to not let them take over your experience and compliment it instead. It's cool to have extra goals, like I replayed Chrono Trigger like I have several times in my life and for the first time I actually got good at the Johnny racing level instead of doing it to travel the couple mandatory times and then entirely forgetting it, because there was an achievement for getting a certain score. The goal was fun to play around and I only thought to do it because the achievements list put the idea in my head that it was a goal I could pursue if I wanted.
>>12757131Demanding internet connection to get achievements on retro games is an abomination.
>>12757131RA represents a lot of things I hate about gaming.>Needing to make/login to an account to play a single player game>Always online>Censorship/Moral dogmatism>Must only use the "one holy ROM" ー no support for alt. versions/languages/romhacks/mods etc. with very few exceptions>Rampant cheating (fast forward abuse encouraged even in """Hardcore""" mode)>General attitude of treating games as a checklist of tasks to be completed like a list of chores, rather than unique works of art to be experienced and appreciatedIn addition to all of these problems, it just kinda sucks. It'll only ever be as good as its achievement sets, and many of them are not fun or interesting at all.I do acknowledge that there has been at least some improvement recently on some of these points (offline mode is finally in development - Great work guys! It's only been your most requested feature for fifteen fucking years) but I very, very much doubt it will ever be improved enough to be a service I would even mildly consider using.
>>12757402>Offline mode still requires an account and can only store up to 100 games. Impressive. How do you fuck that up?
>>12757131the achievements not being set by developers is a deal breaker for me would probably use them if they were but the differences between games is too much and the fact that games get updated achievement sets is silly to me
>>12757402>>Must only use the "one holy ROM" ー no support for alt. versions/languages/romhacks/mods etc. with very few exceptionsThat's mainly just due to how RA works with specific memory addresses.
>>12757131About achievements in general, Skinner box nonsense for people that can't derive enjoyment from the actual gameplay. That said, I did enjoy one of its earliest implementations in Shadow of Rome because they were genuinely funny ("Don't Kick The Elephant", "The Old Switcheroo"...). I also find Retroachievements somewhat interesting from a technical point of view, since the more convoluted ones involve a fair amount of reverse engineering of the game logic.
>>12757131>redditcore
>>12757131Annoying to setup and ultimately does not make my gaming experience any better. If I need some challenge, I can experiment with some self-imposed rules for my own amusement and there's no need for shitty pop-up telling me about it.
>>12757131This is fucking gay as fuck holy shit. What an absolutely retarded idea, on par with participation trophies. Buy an Ad instead of shilling your gayness here, nerd
>>12757439I know why the problem exists, I just hate it.
It's one of the only things getting the newer generations into retro games, so for that alone I have to give it at least some respect
>>12757390They don't "demand" anything. How do you expect an online service to award you an achievement of you're not online? It's not even like they want it that way, you can earn as many achievements as you want offline with emulators set up for that, you just need to go online before closing the emulator at some point for that information to be sent to their servers.
>>12757402It's crazy how every single complaint just shows you don't know what you're talking about >Needing to make/login to an account to play a single player gameYou can play your roms on your RA-capable emulator at all times. Oh and RA supports multiplayer too.>Always onlineThe emulator does not stop functioning when you're not online. You're genuinely crying that you can't update an online leaderboard without internet?>Censorship/Moral dogmatismIt literally has less censorship than /vr/, where boobies are evil. I have achievements from plenty of porn games like Pachinko Sexy Reaction.>Must only use the "one holy ROM" ー no support for alt. versions/languages/romhacks/mods etc. with very few exceptionsBlatantly wrong. The majority of sets support alternate versions. Hacks and homebrews are completely different game experiences and widely supported as their own achievement sets, and there's more of those added to the site basically every day. Sets don't program themselves, if you want to add individual support for every regional release of some 1970s arcade game, or every inferior 50hz EU version of a 60hz game, go ahead.>Rampant cheating (fast forward abuse encouraged even in """Hardcore""" mode)You just whined that they only support versions that aren't filled with cheats. Hardcore Mode blocks rewind, loading save states, and achievement sets are programmed to block novel ways to cheat like pause buffering in megaman as well as detect general cheating like suddenly playing using a save file that wasn't started in Hardcore Mode. What games can you genuinely "cheat" in solely by fast forwarding where the achievement set doesn't individually block it? FF only reduces zero skill and zero effort grinding, especially when you can't rewind or load if you FF too far and fuck up your save.>General attitude of treating games as a checklistSays who? Nobody is forcing you to treat games like a checklist, and the site doesn't tell you to.
>>12757131Ruined by speedrun-tier achievements. I was a fan once but I've had a lot more fun with retro vidya since deleting my RA account. All it does is turn your cherished favorites into joyless grinds.
>>12757419They didn't fuck anything up, it's an online service so no shit you need to eventually connect to the Internet to submit your data. The service doesn't exist as an offline only tracker. I doubt a single user in the history of the site has earned achievements in 100 distinct games while offline without even once having a chance to go online for just a second to submit them, unless they intentionally wanted to hit that limit to brag about it.Do you shit your pants when you can't post on 4chan without internet? It's crazy how kids these days don't understand the internet even at a basic level, it doesn't work if you're not connected.
>>12757730Why does it have to be online?
>>12757792People put hundreds and hundreds of hours into ROM hacks that are by their nature completely offline, yet RA "devs" can't live without the pat on the back why?
>>12757790I never got this complaint. You know you aren't forced to earn every achievement on every game you play before opening the next game, right? Just don't do the speedrun achievements if you don't want to. Is this just autism over being unable to leave things that technically have more to do, even if you know you don't want to do them?
>>12757796Do you not understand the concept of the service? How do you expect to submit data to a leaderboard other people can see if there is no internet connection? The only time it "has" to be online is to submit data, not to play your games or earn achievements in them, which can all be done offline. There's technically a limit of storing achievements for 100 games in memory while offline, but if you don't plan to submit achievement data then you can just... clear your cache after 100 games and keep earning new achievements in different games. If you autistically want a permanent list of your achievements while refusing to submit online data, then you can screenshot the achievement lists on the 100 games you earned for before clearing them.
Did they add the achievement sets for Clover and the other gaymes they took down back yet? No? Okay then.
>>12757802Do you genuinely not comprehend the concept that you cannot submit data other people can see online without an internet connection? You can earn achievements in romhacks offline just fine, it's only submitting data that obviously needs a connection. Also a ton of rom hacks have achievements set up by the actual devs of those hacks, so pretending it's completely separate groups doesn't fly.
>>12757131What gay drama happened this time?
>>12757813Uhhhhh. I don't know if you're just baiting because this is embarrassing. Could you just stop posting? Not only you're wrong, you're missing the point. The 360, for example, a "modern console", was perfectly capable of earning every achievement while never ever connecting the machine to the internet. Of course that to "submit" your achievements to your gay ass account you need internet, but some people, like me, don't care about that at all. I 100% many games back then without even connecting my console to the internet. Now you would expect that "RETROachievements" would be somehow even more stubborn in such offline, no login or account required philosophy, right? The complaint is that not only it isn't, you're not even capable of using it without relying on their gay ass services of which many of us simply do not care.I don't wanna show off my le heckin cheevos to anyone. They're fucking 30 year old games. I just want to have these because i think achievements can be fun and add to the experience.
>>12757841Ok, so you actually just cannot comprehend the concept, got it. I'm sorry you struggle to understand that there is a difference between a console custom built to support achievements and a service providing a system to earn achievements in content that is absolutely not designed for it. Maybe one day you'll figure out enough about technology to get it, but don't overstress yourself about it for now. Just keep thinking that it would somehow be possible to have a constantly growing list of achievements tracked and logged for your roms across all retro gaming generations across all different emulators automatically without needing to activate a service that handles it. That's a cute ideal little dream, like Santa, very wholesome to believe in it.
>>12757131I'm still bitter about what happened to Clover.
>>12757841Maybe you should get off your lazy ass and develop this theoretical "you can earn achievements in any game across any system automatically with no account or internet" service instead of whining that the people that already made that sort of dream a reality also liked the idea of leaderboards and sharing those achievements with others through the internet.
>>12757904I hadn't heard about the site back then, I just use it because I think it would be neat to have goals for stuff like actually playing through the Mario 1 worlds I usually warp pipe past for once. Is the salt just that one specific homebrew doesn't have achievements?
>>12757916Technically it's 2 homebrews without achievements, clover and periwinkle
>>12757895I'm pretty sure you're a clanker, what kind of answer is that? Explain to me how it's impossible. >>12757907>Give a fair, sober critique regarding feature the community made>If you dont like how it is do your own thing and stop whiniiing loooolIs this what brain damage looks like? You should go see a doctor, it's clearly terminal.
>>12757926You didn't give a fair and sober critique, you posted that you don't understand something at all and then even failed to understand when spoonfed. It must be hard to go through life when you can't learn anything because any time new information is provided you assume it must be a bot.
>>12757926I'm not your Special Ed teacher so I'm not qualified to teach a mentally stunted person how to understand something obvious.
>>12757131>to motivate myself to finish games
>>12757952Sorry that I'm not autistic enough to sit through 100 straight levels of Bubble Bubble without getting bored halfway through and thinking maybe it'd be fun to play some Frogger instead for a bit.
>>12757942>>12757947>It's impossible! W-Why? Huh... I-I mean... because... you know... it wasn't meant to be, right? Like... IT JUST IS OKAY?Yeah, that's what I thought. Now stay quiet and never post on this board again.
>>12757964It's really funny that you seriously just have no clue how data or computers work and brag about this ignorance as if it means you get to win arguments on those topics by default.
>>12757957>Sorry that I'm not autistic enough>wheredoyouthinkyouare.jpgthat said, I enjoy it for the fact it introduces me to new ways of playing old games instead of falling into old habits when replaying. it also makes autists seethe for some reason, but then again, so does the concept of emulation in general.
>>12757782hey Scott, are you done sucking off xkeeper?
>>12757964No, it was explained to you directly, the explanation just went far over your head. Please keep posting, I want to see how many ways someone can post "I do not possess theory of mind".
>>12757974I'm sorry but this attempt at an ad hominem is not a replacement for an argument. Obviously you can't counter it when it's pointed out that every single bullet point you listed was factually wrong, but it's cute you think an ad hominem will replace an argument anyway.
>>12757971Yeah easy to agree there. Achievements are a decent motivator even for simple stuff like finding the hidden shit or playing well ingl games that don't punish you for playing poorly. Kirby on NES is a good example, I've played it before but it wasn't until I played with achievements that I realized there's a room hidden in the 1st level with a UFO ability enemy, and for once I actually had a reason to try to kill bosses without getting hit instead of face tanking because there's no punishment for it in game.
>>12757974Ah yes, only the founder of a website can point out when you're just blatantly wrong in your post. Hey guys, 4chan sucks because you need an account to post on it. You can't say you don't need one now or else that means you're biased!!!!
>>12757782>You're genuinely crying that you can't update an online leaderboard without internet?I am complaining that a service which is used almost exclusively for single player games does not function without an internet connection and an account. An offline version that requires no account clearly is and always was possible, given that it is currently being implemented. And all it took was fifteen years of complaining and it still doesn't work well. Why the fuck did it take so long? Oh, right, people like you.>It literally has less censorship than /vr/I can talk about "Deprecated Page 11575 (Game Boy Advance)" on /vr/. The page is locked on RetroAchievements.>The majority of sets support alternate versions. Can you play Super Mario 64 in Japanese, the language it was originally released in? Can you play Final Fantasy XII in Japanese, or are you forced to play it in English? What about Holy Umbrella, a game literally never officially released in any language but Japaneseー can you play it in Japanese? I just picked these three arbitrarily. Fucking half the goddamn sets don't support any language but English.>FF only reduces zero skill and zero effort grindingYeah, and save stating right before a boss doesn't make the game any easier either, does it? I already proved I can beat the stage leading up to the boss, I should be able to restart from right before the boss fight, it just reduces zero effort backtracking. It's cheating. It's REALLY STRONG cheating. You can beat any RPG in your fucking sleep with fast forward. You're not supposed to be able to grind at 3000% speed.>Nobody is forcing you to treat games like a checklist, and the site doesn't tell you to.Riiiight. The site that gives you a checklist of tasks to complete in a game, is in no way reflective of an attitude of treating games as checklist of tasks. Yeah. Accept my concession why don't you, you're clearly right and much smarter than me.
>>12757975I'll assume I was right from the start and you're just baiting like an imbecile or this is just a bot. You just use vague phrases without any substance. I had some semblance of good will at first since you never know what kind of mentally challenged people you can find on this board. In all honesty man, you should do something better with your time. No need to make your life more miserable like that.
>>12757813I understand the concept of the service. You do not understand that I do not want to connect to the internet while playing a single player game, for any reason, ever. My main emulation setup does not even have an internet connection.Retroachivements should function in a manner such that if every server the company owns was exploded by an atomic bomb, and every person who develops for the website was killed, sodomized, and eaten by a pack of rabid, rapist hyenas, I would still be able to keep playing without any interruption or even noticing. It should always have functioned this way and the fact that it ever didn't is a demonstration of a total failure to understand what the purpose of the RA should always have been.
>>12757994>>12757980>literally gets refuted a few posts downjust stop sucking off the shit site, man
>>12758006>I am complaining that a service which is used almost exclusively for single player gamesMaybe you should try having friends, because I use it for multiplayer all the time. >I can talk about "Deprecated Page 11575 (Game Boy Advance)" on /vr/.It's cute that you think cherrypicking the same romhack everyone does means the site is full of censorship. Cry more, it's a site for retro games and people that play them, not virtue signaling with your hipster romhack.>Can you play Super Mario 64 in Japanese, the language it was originally released inNobody is stopping you from playing it. It's hilarious that your 1st example of a game with only 1 supported version is actually a game with 15 distinct supported versions. I'll accept your concession that you lied when you said only 1 golden version was usable.>Fucking half the goddamn sets don't support any language but English.Your ESL ass can cope with that if you want, but it's factually not true.>Yeah, and save stating right before a boss doesn't make the game any easier either, does it? Nice fallacy but that's banned on RA, it's cute that your best argument is pretending to be retarded though.>You can beat any RPG in your fucking sleep with fast forwardIt's banned by the achievement logic in every example I can think of where you actually get an advantage. Maybe you should try actually try playing games though, you're putting yourself at a strict disadvantage in the majority of RPGs because even ones without real time elements give text info you won't be able to read on FF.>The site that gives you a checklist of tasks to completeOften the devs explicitly state they don't expect people to attempt to get them all, the main dev on the Undertale set just said that a few weeks ago when it released. I'm sorry you can't read and can only assume the opposite of what people say, but in fact achievements only have value if they are earned and jot participation trophies expected to be handed out to everyone.
>>12758007Yeah of course you assume you were right from the start, that's how you ended up as ignorant and bad at thinking logically in the first place. Any time something hurts your brain you shut it off and cope.
Never forget the baby doxxing. Also remember how these threads used to get instantly deleted (in less than 5 minutes, no joke) at the time? Funny
>>12757131buy an ad
>>12757813The entire thing could easily be permanently stored offline and serve as just another aspect of any emulator. The only purpose putting any of it online serves is ego stroking on both sides. Hence, why people say it doesn't actually add to the fun. Adding enjoyment to old games is not the focus, ego stroking is.
>>12758278NO HE DOXXED HIMSELF, CHUDbut seriously i feel bad for that guy. But knowing that the entire RA team are a bunch of tranny backstabbers is nothing short of shocking desu
RetroAchievements is full of autistic and retarded achievements.Easy example: Virtua Fighter 2. It's stuffed with "Obtain the rank of Master in Ranking Mode as XXXX". Nobody's done that in hardcore, just 2 retards in softcore. Complete waste of time the game doesn't even reward. One achievement for any character might be fine, but one for every single one? Fuck off.Beating the game with XXXX character also forces you to defeat Dural, which is stupid: it's an extra fight and the ending doesn't change either way. That's why Virtua Fighter 2, the most popular and important Saturn game, has only been played by 32 retards on there. Nobody's touching it when the achievements are pure retardation. That site is hot trash
>>12758490The worst offender to me is the Landstalker one that requires you to beat the game, which is a 20 hour game, in 3 hours. I'm sure it can be done, but yeah let's just pretend the literally dozens of hours required to learn the game and optimize a run doesn't count and you're only going to lose 3 hours for 50 points or whatever paltry amount it is. It's mindboggling how little they think your time is worth.
>In the battle against Balio and Sunder at the Wyndian Dungeon, make Balio lose at least 140 HP without targeting anyone other than Ryu except if using the Influence ability.lolsure, if retarded, pointless busywork is your thing
>>12758523>asks you to beat the game in a much shorter amount of time>"THEY'RE FORCING ME TO WASTE MY TIME"
>>12758490I just checked out the page of VF2, and even all the comments on there are saying that the set needs revision.
There's two things: the base set and the bonus set. Speedrun shit belongs in the bonus set. Autistic bullshit like that needs to stay the fuck out of the base set, yet most base sets are just as autistic as those two examples. You'd have to be a drooling autistic retard or a tranny not to get how fucking stupid RA is.
>>12758842The fact remains that if you do the achievements they only detract from the fun. Funny that you have no defense other than telling people not to do them.
Those Virtua Fighter sets (all the main 3D ones) have dogshit autistic achievement lists, and they still haven't fixed a single fucking thing. That VF2 set's been sitting there like that for 6 or 7 years. Most games on the site are full of the same retarded autism.RA is a complete waste of time if you actually want to be a "trophyhunter". Treat it as a glorified backlog tracker and nothing more.
>>12758873Many such cases. There are a shit ton of broken sets that have been broken for YEARS with not so much as an acknowledgment that they're broken. Imagine putting hours of your life into an achievement and it doesn't even trigger. Shit happens way too often. Zero quality control.
>>12757131Not autistic enough for cheevos, I play for fun.Cheevos were a mistake anyway and them leaking from the modern gaming containment is not a good sign.
i didn't like cheevos but then mister got cheevos now i like cheevos
Achievements? nigga get a phd or something worthy not a fucking badge on a bitchass website that only troons give a fuck. Wise up.
>>12757131I really don't understand the whole achievement mindset.
>install some spyware on your computer so a third party can be sure you achieved some shit or anotherno, i don't think i will
>>12757131Cheevos are gay, but the leaderboards are pretty cool imo.
The worst thing about achievements is that they ruin any sense of discovery. You don't get to wonder if you can do something in the game that seems unintended, like sequence-breaking or defeating a boss you're supposed to lose to, and be surprised when manage to pull it off - there's a fucking achievement for it so you know it's doable, which means no more "aha" moments. Boring.
>achievementsEverything wrong with video game experience because it ruins the immersion. The only achievment should be you enjoying the game, not arbitrary checklists
>>12757957You're supposed to play for fun. You don't need to 100% anything either. If you do not feel motivated to even finish a game you are obviously not having fun and it's fine to quit.
