Why doesn't this get much respect on /vr/? This is easily the greatest GOAT of all time. Dare I say it is one of the must plays that everyone should experience in their lifetimes.
>>
Problem is it is so influential it comes across as cliche today, so /vr/ has a 'what's the big deal' attitude about it.
>>
It's an interesting curiosity from before Symphony of The Night truly defined the genre, but there's nothing particularly great about it.
Neither the shooting nor the manoeuvring stood out in a positive light even at the time.
>>
It's only one faggot that shits on this game, and just because someone hates something doesn't mean you need permission to enjoy it. What is with all you faggots constantly making everything and all or nothing competition

Post-2020 nu-/vr/*
Which is a completely different board, with different people and different rules compared to OG /vr/
>>

I didn't like it, the default controls are bizarre, it felt clunky and worse to control than NES Metroid, like having to tap down twice to go into morph ball, in general samus feels really heavy, and the game just randomly punishes you for using super missiles on phantoon by making it counter with near undodgable attacks, so you'll die before you even run out of super missiles, so you never have a chance to find out he doesn't tard rage when hit with normal missiles.
I was stuck on phatoon for years and by time I finally found out the trick to him by luckily whiffing a couple super missiles, I didn't know where to go after and just dropped the game altogether.

How tf did you get filtered by those controls dude
>>
No no you're supposed to say good game bad.
>>
>>12757549
It's a big open game about exploration anon, with great graphics, great music, great atmosphere, some cool cinemwtic sequences, it is just the whole package man. The shooting and manouvring is fine anyway btw
>>
nobody in the history of serious people on /vr/ has ever not respected super metroid
>>
>>12757569
it's a /v/ game. it's not a /vr/ game. it plays like a modern game (derogatory)
>>
so already had sotn, oot and now super metroid BAD in the past few days. whats the next game? I nominate mario 64.
>>
>>12757569
What's there to respect about it? The music?
Its a clunky mediocre game, and NES Metroid was better.
>>
First a hate super metroid thread then a pro super metroid thread to farm maximum (you)
>>
>>12757531
The intro is completely classic, but I don't find the game fun at all to play.
The controls are very awkward compared to later and even prior entries, and my hands hurt after playing it for even just an hour or so. Samus feels less like a person in power armor and more like a trudging artillery piece.
The open-ended sequence-break structure actually DIScourages exploration in my mind, because if you do go exploring and trying to do things in the "wrong order", you'll end up fighting a boss without any of the tools you're supposed to have and it sucks. So instead of doing my best to explore a mostly linear game, I end up doing everything I can to avoid exploring an open-ended one, which is actually way less interesting.

I struggle to think of anything it does that isn't done just as well or better by other Metroid games which are way more fun to play (at least, way more fun for people who haven't already spent years learning Super Metroid's control scheme).

mario 64 doesnt get shit on because it actually has good gameplay. sotn/oot/sm are all carried by ost and vibes and have easy baby gameplay. a game that fits this trend is chrono trigger but that game isnt even overrated anymore like it used to be
>>12757593
>>12757619
i agree with these guys
>>
>>12757561
>Ummm Super Metroid has perfectly normal controls!
Not him, but no the fuck it doesn't. I think everyone can unanimously agree that Super Metroid's control scheme is pretty fucking strange.
It's not that the game's controls DON'T take some getting used to, but that said, if that anon got filtered by the controls then it's because he was a lazy little bitch.
I've come to realize that in the vast majority of cases, whining about control schemes is a bullshit non-criticism. Most of the time it's a self report from normalfaggots who don't like video games and don't want to learn new things.
>>
>>12757561
>>12757709
Idk why you think the controls are what filtered me when you can change them to something more comfortable in the options.
Samus herself never felt good to move around though, that aspect never clicked for me, it was always awkward to platform with her for the entire dozen or so hours I spent with the game.
>>12757619 put it better than I ever could.

>great game great!

/vr/ is fucking atrocious lol

You're delusional.
>>
>>12757810
>Games should just be pure QoL slop that plays itself with no skill expression or any friction whatsoever
If thousands of people are able to speedrun Super Metroid it then you should be able to play it casually. Shut the fuck up.
>>
>>12758004
People speedrun QWOP too, it doesn't mean that game has good controls.
>>
>>12757531
I've still never beaten it, same with Link to the Past. I played the heck out of Metroid NES and then 2 on gameboy as well as Link's Awakening and liked them quite a bit, but when it came to SM and LttP it felt like more of the same just better graphics and to this day I'll try them every few years but always get bored long before finishing it.
>>
>>12757531
Because it got mogged so hard by a different franchise copying it that the entire genre got named after the copycat
>>
It is truly one of the best games ever made and thus has been discussed to death. What more can be said?
>>
>>12758145
If QWOP had "good controls" according to your retarded ass then there would be no fucking game there.
The existence of games like QWOP is actually a perfect example of why you're an idiot.
>>
>>12757554
>I was stuck on phatoon for years
ahahahaaha what le actual fuck

ive literally never died to phantoon while playing the game in a normal boss order and casually picking up upgrades along the path, probably the only boss in the whole game where this is the case btw

Beat metroid fusion and zero mission like a month ago and the original nes game. Still got this on my radar love the metroid games theyre so good
>>

yeah.. because you can crouch. this isn't a difficult interface to figure out.

I used to change the button layout when I was a stubborn brat, but since then I've realized the default layout is the most functional.

>>
>>12758698
Oh I do, and it figures you're lost as to how stupid you look when your entire argument is that the controls are good because trannies speedrun it, hence why I mentioned QWOP in the first place. Like you really have no clue how many shit games trannies like to speedrun.
>>
>>12758739
>Oh I do
No, you really don't.
>"It's ironic you think I'm stupid, because actually, I think you're stupid!"
That's not what irony means, you dumb fuck.
Anyway, I made actual arguments while you're just crying that the controls hurt your feefees. Please just stop posting and go to bed, kid.

omg you fucking retard are you for real
>>
>>12758717
Crouching is dumb, you already have the ability to shoot diagonally to hit things lower than you, why make the morph ball feel less responsive? Even worse is the fact that pressing up while in the ball returns you to a crouch and you instead have to press up again to be able to move around. Its horrendously clunky.
>>12758726
Shooting diagonally is fine as a concept, Megaman handled it perfectly with Bass/Axl. Its not great though when the only way to do it without moving is to press buttons specifically mapped to aim diagonally up or down.
>>
It insists upon itself too much
>>
>>12758783
Its ironic because you're calling others stupid when you're the one making a stupid argument.
>I made actual arguments
No you didn't, you claimed the controls are good because the game gets speedran, and then devolved into "NUH UH THATS DUMB YOUR DUMB" when I pointed out that they run games with shit controls too.
>hurt your feefees
This is also ironic because you started off pissing and moaning like a bitch because anyone dared make a criticism of the precious game you played when you were 5 years old. Like damn dude, no one even called the game bad and you still got that upset.
>>
>>12748941
Do we really need 2 Super Metroid threads that boil down to each having opposing viewpoints on the game?
>>
>>12758798
>Its not great though when the only way to do it without moving is to press buttons specifically mapped to aim diagonally up or down.
No, that is the best way to do it. You have very poor judgement and I do not respect your opinions or thoughts on this matter.
>>
>>12758963
The objective best way to do it is to have a button that locks you in place while you hold it so you can freely aim where you need to.

it's completely fine, people like you exist,
so ok.
>>
>>12758004
My issue is not that the game's unusual controls make it more challenging to complete. My issue is that the controls make me not want to complete they game, because they make my hands physically hurt when I play it.
Maybe that's just a me thing, but I've never had that problem with any other Metroid game, only Super Metroid.
>>
>>12757549
Metroid has fuck all to do with the post-playstation Castlevanias, which are mid and overrated. Metroid games are super fun and Castlevania games are super fun. The games that wear Castlevania as a skinsuit are irrelevant.
>>
>>12758159
An important thing for you kids to understand is that "beating a game" is not necessary. Back in the day we didn't care and most of us never beat most games we had. The idea isn't even that important. You play until it becomes a grind and you're satisfied. Maybe one day a few years later you pick it up and play it again and beat it that time. It's not a big deal.
>>
>>12759012
The worst possible thing is tying your movement keys to aiming. By your logic Smash TV is better on NES than on SNES. It's only disliked by people who don't want to entertain novel and good control schemes.
>>
>>12759012
>a button that locks you in place while you hold it
that control scheme was in axiom verge and it sucked, ruins the fucking flow. I can handle omitting the downward angle like in Fusion but forcing me to use the d-pad blows. I want my thumb anticipating my next movement, not occupied by the unrelated task of aiming.
>>
>>12759274
I'm 52. Unless it was a pack in like Sonic, Altered Beast or one of my brother's games I didn't care for (he was way into Mario) I played and beat most games I owned Zelda 1, Link's Awakening, Metroid 1 and 2 included. But by the time it got to that third game I borrowed them from friends and was never interested enough to keep going. Same with Mario 3 which we owned but never came close to beating. I've probably played less than an hour of Mario World in my whole life.
>>
>>12759291
>>12759309
You guys have got to be memeing.
I truly can't even comprehend how having to constantly remember what button aims where feels better to you rather than just having one+dpad do it all, or hell even just having your movement locked in place by default while shooting.
>>
Like wtf even is a metroid lmao she is trans
>>
>>12759682
I guess because I didn't reject the controls, I thought "oh man, that's exactly where it should go" and used it as the primary way of making diagonals. I never use the d-pad for diagonal aiming it's just annoying to me.

Did you ever play Abuse for DOS, or Shadow Complex?
>>
>>12760335
Not him, but for me at least it's not that the controls are hard to get used to, they're just not that much fun. Because Samus is kinda slow with floaty jumps and stopping to aim is a deliberate process, the enemies and obstacles you encounter are based around that somewhat clunky control scheme. So as a result, most enemies are slow and not particularly dangerous. It ends up looking like an action game but is more of a slow paced easy exploring game. Both are easy, and Symphony of the Night more so if you cheese it, but at least it feels like an expanded action-platformer with fun controls and tons of fun ways to challenge yourself if you want. I get that the slower pace is what some people like about Super Metroid but it's not for everyone.
>>
>>12761004
I have a ton of fun with it, especially in tourian when I'm able to take 0 damage and precisely avoid the O-ring projectiles and instantly freeze them in multiple directions, only possible with the L/R diagonal mapping.

Another room that's a lot of fun is the acid gauntlet. Getting through those rooms is immensely satisfying and is not the type of platforming that would be possible without super metroid's mechanics.
>>
>>12761029
I think the problem with super metroid is that once you master the mechanics, besides tourian there aren't any places in the map to really express that skill. It needs more challenge areas.
>>
BETA
>>
>>12761040
That's why it's great to be honest, right as you have all the powers it's over. Classic staple of Metroidvanis
>>
>>12762858
I didn't say powers, I said skill. There's not enough gauntlet style areas and for some of them to be fun you have to enter before getting too much gear.
