>>12766252You first
Not really a fan of the big empty "kill room" level design.
I finished TFE, was pretty funI tried to get on with TSE, but couldn't finish much of it for some reason, maybe it was just harder to finish levels than TFE
>>12766252First 2 games are fun, they actually require some strategy on higher difficultiesNever got into 2 and the later games though I heard the console game was pretty good
We can't make godo levels. We can't can't make good AI.We can't make good shooting gameplay. But we can make a lot of enemies appear on screen!!!!!!
OP Here>>12766254>Not really a fan of the big empty "kill room" level design.>>12766265I remember liking TFE and TSE when I was a kid, tried playing them did nto like TFE then tried it again. And I say TFE is mediocre.Like it is OK however the game is repetitive since it basically spawns monsters at every step. Also unlike DOOM monsters they are the same repetitive and identical trash, some of the cinematic monster moments are basically random trash like the moment when the skeletons charge you or that stupid cage that locks you. They where going for something however it failed. There is also to many times when the game basically spawns enemies behind you back for cheep shots.I say a OK game. Despite its limitations. I just quit TFE because there was a stupid insta death trap and the auto save was at the beginning of the level.NOPE.>Never got into 2 I remember playing it however I quit it when I watched a review I got flashbacks:>Ugly blurry textures that look more ugly then the first game!>Literally deformed shit show cartoon graphics that make you want to vomit.>Retarded comedy nothing is seriousI am vomit!>There are witch enemies who look like something out of a trash 2001 gameI think this is when I quit.
Anyone played Serious Sam 4?
>>12766297Not retro
>>12766253Are you serious?
2 is overhated
They're good mindless fun, especially co-op
>>12766252Best version unironically
Serious Sam is the pinnacle of the arcade style in First-person shooters, but unfortunately, 90% of the time, the level design doesn't do it justice. When everything comes together, though, it's the perfect experience for me. It's like a shoot 'em up, but in 3D. Pure adrenaline and action the whole time, testing your decision-making, skills, positioning, and dodging, and the fact that you're in large areas with enemies spawning in succession breaks the biggest problem with FPS games, which is that the pace is entirely dictated by the player. In Serious Sam, in theory, this problem doesn't exist. If the player doesn't adapt to the fast pace of combat, he'll be overwhelmed by enemies and die (many enemies are faster than Sam, unlike in Doom,so you can't spend too much time managing the battlefield; you need to pick the right enemies and take them out, the sooner you do this, the better).
>>12766297Yeah. Technically, the game is a total mess.As far as the combat game design goes, it gets a lot of things right, but the game has a ton of overpowered elements (weapons, skills, gimmicks) that end up breaking its own internal logic. So it’s a pretty problematic game overall.>>12766272The monsters in Serious Sam TFE are very diverse and fill completely different roles in combat. In this regard, they are fully comparable to those in the classic Doom. In fact, Serious Sam TFE has a wider variety of monsters than Doom 1.
og or HD remake for TFE/TSE?
>>12766252I tried First Encounter some weeks ago for the first time. It's shit. It looks good but it's not fun. I reached the last level on hard but I had to switch lower because it's just bs. Painkiller however was fun. Like they do the same thing but Painkiller does everything better.
for some reason i always thought this game was bob the builder babby shit, i guess because of the name/font. but that was enough for me to write it off when it was contemporary. i should give it a shot at some point since i had the wrong impression of what the game was
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
>>12766252TFE and TSE are great. The horde-killing is fantastic and bosses feel appropriately epic. I also love Sam's one-liners, the voice actor sounded like he was having a great time recording them.
that one room filled with bonegoats filtered me. was enjoying it up to that point but i admit i am a scrub
>>12766704>they are fully comparable to those in the classic Doom. In fact,WRONG.See: >>12767450DOOMs monsters are incredibly complicated in their behavior they are always unpredictable and interesting. In contrast SS monsters are literally1) Take the shortest path to player2)If you have it use your attack animation.Lets see1) DOOM monster infighting2) Monsters spinning3) Random monster behaviors and actions.SS monsters are completely different and more like modern monsters in games.
>>12766254I have always hated single player fps games where you enter arena after arena and kill hordes of respawning enemies til the game decides its enough. Its so unsatisfying
The slow player speed and shitty 'safe' physics are the main problem. So getting from A to B takes forever and once you're surrounded, it's over. I've played tfe/se/2 to death, but prefer DooM slaughter maps for that kind of gameplay.
>>12768213>til the game decides its enoughNot how games work, actually. There's a fixed amount, no "spawning choice" involved at all.
>>12766737OGs with the classicpatch is all you need, HD has some physics issues that haven't been fixed to this day and it's enough to ruin the experience
>>12766252great fun if you like games where you can just continuously keep firing at enemiesthe music is quite nice, too
>>12767507>DOOMs monsters are incredibly complicated in their behavior they are always unpredictable and interesting.doom enemies are dumb as bricks>monster sees or hears player>takes several random steps forward>fires weapon or takes a swip at a player if it's close enough>if it's Nightmare or player's in melee range keep attacking>otherwise take another few steps>go into random direction if it walks into a wallSS enemies work pretty much the same way but they can take advantage of actual pathfinding so they can reliably find the player and not crash into each other trying to swarm you
>>12766252I quit within an hour because enemies kept raping me. I'm pretty sure I just suck at FPS games though.
>>12769913 (me)Pretty sure it was those skeleton fuckers that filtered me, thinking back on it...
>>127662522nd > 1st > 3 > 2 > 4
>>12769916they come straight at you, so just run backwards shooting them with the shotgun and dodge when they jump at you
>>12766252When i was kid i thought his leg getting sucked into the tube
>>12766252>we have duke nukem at home
>>12771023It's not the same genre as duke nukem. Duke has tiny levels and few enemies, Serious Sam is the opposite. One common thing is all the secrets.
>>12766252It's seriously shit. No level design, no plot, no atmosphere, just hallways leading to big arenas with a thousand enemies and you shoot at them with weak, ineffective peashooters. It's a mind-numbing, tedious game with mean design choices.
>>12766252Really don't like it. Zero level design. Painkiller has a much cooler aesthetic but suffers from the exact same braindead boring gameplay. Give me key hunting and puzzles any day over this.
>>12771023Most misguided post in this thread.
>>12766252Meh. Painkiller did it better. Fun graphical showcase though. I remember everyone jizzing their pants over the high resolution textures.
>>12766434Agreed. I like the batshit art design.
>>12766252>>12771231revolutionary.most games at the time had max 5 enemies at once and levels were small with a lot of loading.then this game suddenly had dozens of enemies at once with huge levels.
