Someone finally went back and bugfixed the ancient fan translation of Dragon Quest VI. The patch doesn't have any untranslated lines and no longer freezes in menus anymore!

Oh right on, I dont really remember this one. Maybe I will try it again.
>>
>>12792115
Understandable. DQ5 had the monster-taming and brides, DQ7 had its sheer length, but DQ6 never really stood out and being released on the heels of Chrono Trigger didn't help.
>>

no one cares about the inferior SNESlop version

all trash, 5 is mediocre game mogged so hard by 6

Weird because I was just thinking about this the other day. Isn't that fan translation most people played from 2003 or something? Can't believe it took over 20 years to fix that shit, we were robbed of this game and V in the US.

>the fuck you talking about? no one gives a fuck about Reddit Trigger, 6 was more popular and sold much better
That Chrono Trigger shitposter is insanely retarded. Both DQ6 and CT shared some staff, both were held back for polishing, and both had some cut content not just "DQ6 dev was deprioritized becausr of CT", and both are held as classics.
In fact DQ6's cuts worked to its benefit (pacing, presentation) comparing it to DQ7's massive volume (not against its volume, but how it was presented sequentially rather than optionally, and the remakes cobtent cuts are trash)
>>
>>12792132
>>b-b-but in America it was popular!
>DQ6 was not localized in the west you retard
Yeah you got him there
DQ6's English SNES version exists and was finished but went unreleased because Enix USA shut down, that there is what caused the series to miss an entire console gen and never recover

DQ6 DS was almost cancelled by SE over poor sales of the series, Nintendo picked it up and paid for 70% of the translation (and censored the puff puff scenes of course) and it underperformed again, its sales and DQM2 were key reasons why SE stopped DQ western releases for years

It's insane to say it's "more popular" in any sense of the term
>>
>>12792204
>DS version is not retro
Yes it is because it's a remake
>>
>>12792815
Sucks we missed on all the 3ds DQM games which were thankfully translated, but sucks I literally only bought a 3ds to play the remake of DQM1 and couldn't play it until way after I modded my 3ds years after I bought it and the translation was out.
I guess DQ11 did pretty well for them to translate spin offs again.
>>
>>12792132
Keep crying, it sold more then chrono trigger and final fantasy 6.
>>
Call me when it's done.
>>
Well that's nice, the DS version sucks. Still won't prevent retards from leaning towards that version though.
>>
>>12793093
No party chat sucks
>>
>>12793093
6 DS by ArtePiazza is a nice alternate way to experience the game much like 7 3DS and 8 3DS and 3R Switch/PC (with translation fix mod), but not to the extent it makes the original (read 16-bit version) obsolete.

The party chat and extra hints about the identity of the dragon (cut content in DQ6 with only the hints remaining, but more hints in remake) doesn't make up for the 16 bit akira toriyama jrpg kino charm or ds version censorship. They're each good on their own merits and worth a replay.

I would say the games that were made obsolete are:
>DQ1/2 NES
By SNES version, then versions based on it (GBC, mobile, 3DS). 2D-HD is too much.
>DQ3 NES
By SNES version with K-Mod (jp only) for the GBC exclusive dungeons (also in 2D-HD but that version needs a translation fix mod and lacks charm)
>DQ4 NES
By PS1 version, or DS version with Party Chat restoration plus NES localization port mod.
>DQ5 SNES
By PS2 version or DS version (each their own thing)
>DQM/DQM2 GBC
3DS version is an acceptable substitute

The rest is already good enough the way it was released the first time around, yes including and especially 7
>>
>>12793108
DQM2 3ds removes the randomized worlds which was one of the best things of the original, both versions of DQM1 are great though, hope one day we get a translation for the ps1 version
>>
>>12793108
What a load of retarded shit, original versions being made "obsolete" by shitty cashgrab handheld remakes with rehashed content made by interns. Go back to /vg/ or whatever it is you come from because you are beyond hopeless.

Anyone that believes there is such a thing as remakes making originals "obsolete" doesn't have taste (and I don't mean 'has bad taste'), doesn't know what art is, and is entirely influenced by marketing.
>>
>>12792815
Aside from calling it "Pattycake" while the combat skill is still Puff-Puff, it wasn't censored beyond how it's the usual bait-and-switch gag seen in almost every DQ game.
>>
DQ6 is the first DQ I completed. I played it off and on for years. I know this one isn't liked as much but it will always have a special place in my heart. One of Kochi Sugiyama's best soundtracks too (rip), the overworld theme and ocean waves still pop in my head every now and then.
>>
>>12793203
The first four DQ games are genuinely painful to play in their original forms, you can't even enter staircases or talk to NPCs without going through a menu first and that misery quickly adds up. Even the modern DQ nostalgia bait uses the 16-bit graphics and the NES-inspired sound effects from the SNES versions as the earliest frame of reference, even the GBC versions are downscales of the SNES versions rather than the NES one, it's just too archaic and unpolished compared to its contenporaries on NES.
>>
>>12793109
That sucks, I retract that about DQM1 then as I didn't even play that far, I forgot about the PS1 version too but since I didn't play it I can't comment.
>>
>>12793476
>Even the modern DQ nostalgia bait uses the 16-bit graphics and the NES-inspired sound effects from the SNES versions as the earliest frame of reference
If you mean DQ11's Tickington worlds, the 3DS release that was Japan-only kept all the worlds in their original graphical style. The console re-release that came after just made them all look like DQ6/7.
>>
>>12793108
Man what a wrong post. I'm glad in reality the versions of the first 3 games in particular that will go down in history is the NES (actually Famicom) versions that sold 3x their SFC remakes.
>>
>>12793481
The 3ds remake of DQM1 also removes all the cameo final boss battles and replaces them with a post game story about saving another kingdom of original characters, while it certainly has much more story and a whole other town to visit, I would rather had my cameo boss battles with the literal final bosses of previous games adressing Terry in their iconic phrases. I was hoping they would add the remaining missing final bosses of 7 8 and 9 in the remake but no, removed them all

>muh sales
From a playability standpoint these versions simply aren't the best, not even the most content complete
Anything directly inspired by them (Mother 1, Momotarou Dentetsu) quickly had sequels or remakes that ditched the NES formula and was more like their 16-bit versions. It's like how point and click games no longer ask you to write "look" "go" on the keyboard every single time you want to do something. Something like the SNES DQ3 on the other hand is sublime, an all-time classic. Just enough retro soul to still convey the lead artist designs and orchestral arrangements, and sprite animations among the best for any RPG period while still very faithful to the original.

The one concession I will give is that their English localization is better than their modern official versions, but there's fan ports for that script.

You're getting hang up on things like having to use talk from a menu like this stuff mattered in the grand scheme of things, oh no I have to press the button twice to talk to someone the game is literally unplayable! You also fail to realize that DQ's interface WAS a streamlined interface at the time.
BTW I've actually played every Momoden game and they still had the DQ menu all the way up to the PSX remake released in December 1998, so I don't know what you're up to with "quickly ditched the NES formula", although they had shortcut buttons by that point iirc those only started making their appearance in Shin

Anyway my point is this stuff is nothing in the grand scheme of the game. The main reasons why no remake make the original game obsolete is because they casualize the gameplay to the point that they ruin the gameplay and reduce the point of entire mechanics. The original is well balanced, spellcasters are weak but are important because they're the only ones who can hit several enemies at once, then starting with the SNES they added weapons like boomerang/whip/flail which hit entire groups or even the entire field using physical attackers, why should the player bother with weak spellcasters that have limited MP anymore? Being able to carry a bag with 99 herbs renders having a Priest for healing useless until the mid-game and healmore becomes mandatory to use in battle. Having a second book to turn someone else into a Sage renders the entire point of the Goof-Off class null. Being able to grind stat upgrading seeds to lessen classes weaknesses renders the entire point of having classes each with their own pros&cons null.
In the original the late game meta is to have a balanced team. In the SNES remake the late game meta is "have 3 female physical attackers all equipped with Flails and 1 sage for healing".
>>
>>12795989
As for the art, it was designed for NES limitations in mind. Having interns touch them up isn't 'soul', you're only thinking this because we got to the point where even "retro gaming" has completely rejected the NES. In a few years they'll do the same with the SNES and SNES graphics won't be "soul" anymore either.
The animations added in the DS remakes isn't adding 'soul', because they were made by interns and only added in because they knew modern audiances would complain and mock the games if there were no battle animations, it's purely a marketing thing which is the anti-thesis of 'soul'. I'll also say that the animations in the DS remakes look very goofy most of the times and don't fit the enemies personalities at all, their only intent was to 'cutify' everything regardless of what the original intent was for each enemy.

As for the topic at hand and the DS version of 6, it's an ireedeemable version solely for two things: what it did to the monster hunting mechanic, and the fact that it grouped skills and spells under the same "magic" menu which is beyond retarded. The way the menu works and the position of your spells and skills within the menu keep changing as you learn new ones is also retarded and makes battles cumbersome because you never know where what you want to use is located.
This is without mentionning the rehashed graphics. Most of that versions graphics are re-hashed as-is from the DS versions of 4 and 5, exact same NPCs, items, and even environment textures at times. This again is the contrary of 'soul', it's purely a way to make a quick cash-in without caring about what the result looks like.
>>
>>12796329
Yeah but it has party chat so that makes it better than the original ever if I don't like the weird 3d graphics they have been doing since dq7

Illusion of Gaia translator at Enix USA confirmed it.

>Yep, likely it was DQ 6 that was fully translated and ready to go as DW 5. If I remember correctly, it would have been too expensive to bring DQ5 over and thus Enix Japan didn’t give permission for localization.

>Dragon Warrior V simply wasn’t finished by the time Enix America had closed. Had nothing to do with the visual quality and everything to do with Enix America not being around to release. As I mentioned, we had the game basically finished and ready to go but we didn’t have the time to cert the title and finish testing. I’ve heard the various rumors that NOA was looking for polygon based games at the time but that was never something I experienced or heard while working at Enix. NOA wanted the game but we weren’t around to release it.
>>
>>12796748
>if it really existed, by now it would have ended up for sale, like trials of mana
It fell through the cracks like FFV. They also finished Talon's Adventure 1 but its localization prototype is rotting at some (((collector))) basement and already hoarded by wata just like Neugier.
Modern Square Enix has no incentive to rerelease the older localizations because they changed the entire terminology and localization style AND the older localizations are actually easier to read, pull off the old english style much better, and actually have LESS censorship, so they would only embarrass them.
>>
>>12798091
It's even more unlikely considering that Square Enix never rereleased the original games in their original versions except very rarely (the Wii disc that was DQ1/2/3 in both NES and SNES versions with modifications expected from VC versions like censored text and removed flashing, and a special version of the Famicom Mini that's Shounen Jump-themed and even that only has the first game)

All other rereleases were technically ports based on the kietai phone versions or unique remakes.
>>
they knew about the playstation in 1993
no one wanted to make cartridge games anymore
>>
>>12798087
DQ6 in the US would have been precisely at the time when sales of 16-bit games were suffering a lot, which started in 94 but by 95 it was even worse. Some people called that era the "second video game crash" back then.

Basically it's the same reason why so many Saturn games got cancelled after 96: the market was too small
>>
>>12798091
>the older localizations are actually easier to read
For the NES games, at least. DW7 was a mess of abbreviations and typos that made everything mostly incoherent.

If they did finish an official localization of DQ6 under the Warrior name, then I want to see what names they picked (mainly for the skills and monsters), because I can't imagine them being worse than what DW7 went with.
>>
Played DQ4 on NES (or DW4 I guess) a honestly it was pretty fun, my main issue is the mandatory AI party members in chapter 5 but at least that a justification for the MC to be a jack of all trades that can react to any situation (yes, this is a huge cope) and the lack of the item bag because I hate item management, it gets better once your party grows in size but it still sucks. I think I like it more than the DS remake.
Now I'm playing DQV on SNES and I think it's the best looking version of the game I think the other versions are overall better, mostly because I don't like the 3 member party system.
I do have high hopes for this new DQ6 patch. I played the DS remake a long time ago (I even saw a sealed copy in a toy shop but I didn't bought it)
>>12796329
>This is without mentionning the rehashed graphics.
This. The problem is not that they reuse the assets, it's the fact they are fucking ugly and unappealing.

>>
>>12796170
>>12798446
It's a remake and a sequel at the same time, I can only think of another game that managed to pull this feat and it's also not retro Silent Hill Shattered Memories which is a remake of SH1 and a sequel to its bad ending at the same time
>>
>>12798470
It's called requel

Fire emblem 3 is the same, remake of the first and a sequel
>>
>>12798497
>Fire emblem 3 is the same, remake of the first and a sequel

Not the same thing. FE3 is divided into two parts, a remake chapter and a sequel chapter. FF7R and SH:SM are remakes and sequels *at the same time*.
>>
>>12798087
>Yep, likely it was DQ 6 that was fully translated and ready to go as DW 5. If I remember correctly, it would have been too expensive to bring DQ5 over and thus Enix Japan didn’t give permission for localization.
NOA licensed the vast majority of Squaresoft & Enix RPG titles released outside Japan, meaning they took all the risk. So why the fuck would Enix veto a release, when they're getting PAID regardless of how many copies sold outside Japan. I don't think he knows what he's talking about.
>>
>>12799862
You're the one who didn't get it.

Enix made 4 DQ games on NES, Nintendo published the first outside Japan relatively late, overestimated demand, and then Enix USA handled the 2-3-4 on NES.
Enix published 5 in Japan but for some reason Chunsoft fumbled it badly, and its coding was a mess. So while Chunsoft still did the DQ1+2 remakes and Talon's Adventure (and then later spun it off as their own Shiren series), Enix had Heartbeat develop DQ6 and DQ3R instead.

Now normally for localizations then they would ask the original developers to stick around for a few more months and implement the English text which they would rush Enix USA for. But Enix Japan told Enix USA to just skip DQ5 and do DQ6 instead.
Then DQ6 was localized but Enix USA was shut down so neither Enix nor Nintendo had anyone to release that game in English. They managed to release Terranigma after that but that English version was basically a romhack, DQ6 would be on another level of complexity.

I think a DQ4 PS1 localization by Enix USA was announced then cancelled for similar reasons, because the developer folded after the release so Enix had no one to implement the english translation in the game.
>>

>>
>>12792124
I'm playing DQ7 on 3DS and I really like it since, unlike the first three I played, it has a story and characters with motivations other than FF1 and FF3 "name your units and go". DQ2 was good since it had the two members that had a little personality, but still. I don't know how V and VI are, or any DQ game besides maybe XI, but as of now I feel like DQVII is like the top two in the mainline franchise. Also I am playing with the orchestra mod and the music is very beautiful.
>>
>>12797478
But he died years ago. How did they do it for a patch that just came out a few days ago?
>>

If you like DQ7, then you'll likely enjoy DQ6 as well since they share a lot of the same gameplay and character focus.
>>
>>12792094

I had no idea about all the dq translation patch bugs.

I found out about the DQ3 save bug for the first time yesterday.

>Have to sell a key item to a merchant then save the save the game using the in game save system and restart the game in order for a merchant to finish making another key item to access the last area of the game
>Doing so corrupts your save and causes the game to delete it.

Well played, troonslators.

If it weren't for emulator save states I'd be cooked.

Anyway I found a bug fixed rom and am about kill the big bad.
>>
>>12792809

>CT and DQ6 shared some staff

Akira Toriyama did concept art for both, but that's about it.

Squaresoft and Enix weren't merged back then, my schizophrenic friend.
>>
>>12792094
I think the original DQ5 fan-translation has also been left incomplete for decades. Hopefully they or someone else can clean that one up, too
>>
>>12801915
>Squaresoft and Enix weren't merged back then
I can't believe I have to state the obvious but Chrono Trigger in particular was a collaboration made with the blessing of Enix, and both Toriyama and Yuji Horii were involved. Collaborations don't require mergers. Super Mario RPG was also another collab between Squaresoft and Nintendo long before that staff joined Nintendo or Alphadream or Intelligent Systems or whatever.
>>
>>12801971
Nah that one is complete, just very old and kinda rough around the edges (I just finished a playthrough)
