Imagine if Circle of Death was '8' shaped instead of 'O' shaped, and there was a cloud of cacodemons. This wad's gimmick is that every map has 404 linedefs.

Have the fishes always been this dumb when shot at from above ? I don't recall this happening in vanilla Quake, then again I can't remember if I ever shot rotfishes while not being underwater myself.
>>
Did you know that rotfishes only have 3 tics of memory?

you can create similar behavior in both quake and doom by placing a melee only monster that has no possible way to reach you

i've seen pinkies do this
>>

That's why I prefer barracuda sharks in my aquariums
>>
>>12823168
Yeah, monsters in Doom can often do that, but at least they move a bit. Here, my fishes only rotate a bit and don't scrape walls like Doom monsters like to do.

https://youtu.be/3yQEOxOSAx4 here's a pretty funny video i found a while back showing this happening in quake 2

>>12823143
Yes they've always been dumb like this. The difference is the original maps had completely opaque water so you couldn't just snipe them from above unless you happened to know exactly where they are.

Finished you're wad /vr/ have some short thoughts
>Map01
Nice visuals but a bit too open for its own good, people seemed miss the blue key but I missed the rocket launcher and had to run from 2 key fights lol
>Map02
Fun little amateur map, a bit too generous with resources but it's fine. Secrets were a bit obscure like having to interact with the obelisk thing at the exit.
>Map03
Another map that's too big. It was mostly fine but the 2 archies waiting at the top of the elevator was bullshit.
>Map04
Highlight fo the wad, loved the cacodemon fight over the lava, really exciting stuff. Just a damn fun map.
>Map05
Just okay, the cock admittedly got a chuckle out of me
>Map06
Not much to say about this one, enjoyed the gargoyle pestering you though.
>MAP31
The combat in this one is fun but fuck interacting with the marine for a key.
>MAP32
Another highlight for me, cool crypt level with some decent setpieces.

Pretty fun wad overall especially after abyssal apocrypha which tired me out

Sonic Mayhem's alternative Quake 1 soundtrack is superior to Reznor's.

It's not bad but the NIN one is way more atmospheric. I have played through using it though. His Quake II soundtrack is legendary though. That Quake tape is what got him the job.

Map04 was really shit. i think it should still be the latest map in the set.
>>
>>12823367
The guy who did Quake 2s soundtrack sent id a tape of an alternate soundtrack he did for Quake and they liked it so much they hired him to do Quake 2 after Reznor turned it down for having no atmosphere or whatever reason he gave for not doing Quake 2. It's called Methods of Destruction.

There's some such guys, though probably in a minority.

Trent Reznor also does that, he was working as a janitor at a record studio or something, and just borrowing instruments and recording booths after work hours, and assembling it all in post, all by himself. Reznor did it that way because that's how his idol, Prince, did it.

I admire that kind of talent and dedication, it feels like you gotta be more than just decent at each other instrument and role to be a successful one-man band.

I love the title theme for Quake, I kinda wish that the game was alternating between tracks like those and then the spooky tracks.
>>
>>12823595
Yeah there's a lot of bands now since it's so easy to make and distribute your own music that it's actually just one guy. Its pretty common in the old school punk and synth punk scenes.
>>
>>12823602
>I don't feel that there's much reason to talk about him on /vr/.
His channel is about covering retro FPS (with some modern sprinkled in) and he's the biggest in that space so there is naturally going to be some overlap with places like this. I don't understand the sentiment where any mention of the guy is akin to slaying Voldemort but not with any other similar creator.

What do you guys think about Episode 3 of Doom 1? Personally Inferno is carried by its art and atmosphere for me, beyond that the map design are fine, its pretty much dead set on having tight corridors and small rooms, witch contributes to the difficulty of the episode but its makes the whole episode a bit of a hussle to get thought. Im not afraid to say that whenever i go back to doom 1 Inferno is the episode i look foward the least or the 3 to play.

Shit's real easy. The id1 folder has all the base Quake game stuff, make a folder in there named music, then put in the tracks with filenames like this (they don't have to be .ogg format, .mp3 also works).
Similarly for getting the music in the expansions, or in mods like Arcane Dimensions. Give it a try some time, some of the music really fits, I'll give you the files.

i could also try plutonia (i've been told to skip tnt)

skill level: i beat doom 1 on nightmare and doom 2 on uv -fast without mid level saving and a few levels of sunlust on regular uv by saving out of combat (like elder scrolls or something) but did not pistol start, but as i've mentioned i tore my shoulder so i dunno. i got sticker shock going to pick up an xbox controller the other day so i'm going to change my sensitivity or something

I mean, is it even worth it? Some YouTube entertainer who's tertiary at best to classic shooter discussion I feel isn't that much conversation by itself, it doesn't bring much to the table.
What'd even be the subject, whether or not X or Y opinions of his are good or bad? I feel like that's something that should be discussed in his comment section or Discord channel, that's why he has those.

I just see very little value in talking about those people here, and what I've seen repeatedly, is a lot of negatives. Both for the ones I like, and the ones I don't.

>>12823941
Plutonia is a good frame of reference because of how influential it's been to Doom mapping. Also it's pretty good. Also, you'll learn how to be better at the game, if you can clear Plutonia on UV, you'll be ready for a LOT of custom content. It's not the hardest ever by modern standards, but back when it came out, it was the hardest official Doom product, and it set a number of bars of quality and challenge.

TNT is, well, the wildcard. Whether you like it or not is a gamble, it's uneven and rough, and there's some pretty awful shit in there, but I also think that there's some pretty good shit in there too. It's worth trying it out and seeing what you think yourself. If you find that you just don't like it at all, you can drop it like a hot potato.

did they do something to the default UZDoom renderer? i booted up the game after upgrading for the first time in a while and it overwrote a lot of my settings and everything was way too dark. for some reason a lot of settings are missing from the menus so i had to drop to console and mess with the gamma a bit to make doom not feel like doom 3

To bring people to his Twitter/let people know where they can find more. You must admit his style is pretty distinct. No one else is really doing homoerotic retro FPS memes with the amount of effort he puts in them.

I saw John Romero at a grocery store in Ireland around 2019. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything, so I asked him what he thought about this REKKR mod rather than asking anything about his work on SIGIL.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Dr. Pepper cans in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

The shenanigans during the Ion Storm years show he at least at that time had a pretty inflated ego and I think he's acknowledged that.

The REKKR thing was from him throwing a little shade at REKKR on the Dev Game Club podcast but it's memed for comedic effect.
>>
>>12824637
i posted about it a few years ago

the big revelation was romero figured out mouse and keyboard first but he used the numpad and arrows as wasd wasn't invented yet

carmack used a joystick and everyone else was a keyboard warrior

he told me some stuff about his personal life he should write a memoir about

he told me that the e3 dragon from quake really pissed him off that it didn't get made. he wanted a level like icon of sin where you ended e4 in a room with a full stack of weapons and a quad damage, you go through a teleporter and the dragon flies circles around you in an arena while shooting fire at you

no one but him could figure out how to beat it (because he was the only one using a mouse) so it got cut

he also told me that he intended deathmatch to be an e-sport and really likes watching e-sports

really down to earth guy unlike most people that famous
>>
>>12824641
Its weird he thought the dragon was so great because that thing is terrible when it was implemented in Dissolution of Eternity. It just flies in circles.
>>
>>12824648
you were supposed to lead it with quad damage rockets and just kill it as quickly as possible

even pros have trouble with midair rockets sometimes so i could see why it was so hard
>>
>>12824610
Wow, what a douchebag. I remember asking him to sign my favorite REKKR poster that Revae gave me. when he saw it, he made the same expression he has in that photo where he's signing a Doom 3 cover, but more disgusted and filled with hatred. Instead of signing it he wrote 'FUCK REKKR' all over it. he told me in all seriousness that if I wanted an autograph next time I'd have to pay him 3k bucks or fuck off, then he just walked away... I was stunned.
>>
>>12824639
I dunno if I'd call that an example of "inflated ego" so much as just having some fun with what publicity came his way. From reading his book, he unwittingly became the "rockstar developer" by accident simply cos he was willing to speak to the press when the other OG id Boys weren't. Yeah I know none of that was his fault despite calling himself shit like Doom GOD on Usenet and also he absolutely totally had no idea bro about the Suck It Down ad someone else did that I swear
>>
>>12824676
oh yeah

one of the things he said is the whole thought he was just jacking off playing doom all day when he was testing the fuck out of the maps constantly making changes because he was the only one who could beat levels on UV

he intended the game to be barely beatable without saving on UV and Nightmare got added because he was surprised people could beat it, so he went out of his way to make it unbeatable for himself

apparently he couldn't get past e1m3 without saves when they shipped it (i can see why that opening fight is pretty miserable on nightmare if they start respawning)
>>
>>12824683
No besides being slightly catty in that podcast people are memeing on about REKKR he's actually super cool and down to Earth nowadays and willing to answer questions or do virtually any interview on YouTube he gets asked to do (I have seen him on channels with a few thousand views doing them, though virtually all his interviews are the same because they all ask the same questions and he has a photographic memory or whatever). Any reputation he had in the past as a blowhard has largely been rehabilitated in recent years.
>>
Lately people seem to have stopped giving him shit for daikatana tooo
>>
>>12824694
I am calling it now that Daikatana is going to be fully rehabilitated and achieve genuine cult classic status in the coming years.
>>
>>12824683
Definitely not. He's always struck me as humble and easy-going and singing the praises of others whenever possible. Even when having to constantly correct Sandy misremembering shit or taking credit for shit he didn't do, Romero's patient and nice about it.
>>12824694
I mean, the game came out more than 20 years ago. Anyone still giving Romero shit for that is a dumb faggot.
>>
i guess that's one of the things romero told me that isn't exactly public

guys like sandy did all the geometry and texture placement and stuff, but romero was the one who did all the finalized item and monster placement on every single map in doom and doom 2

i think he just doesn't want to start shit with his old coworkers so he lets them take more credit than they deserve

also remember that romero did the gameplay side of the programming like weapon and item balance. carmack just used his monster ai as is in quake 2 and had to outsource the quake 3 ai to some modder from the gamespy scene because he just has a huge road block on this aspect of programming
>>
>>12824697
I've seen people calling Blood 2 a misunderstood diamond in the rough (the fact that it's a bitch to boot on modern machines holds it back a lot), so it's possible.
>>
>>12824704
Carmack and Romero were a remarkable team as programmers. You should read Romero's book if you haven't to get a real idea of how they worked together.
>>
>>12824694
the thing about daikatana is that the ideas were just too ambitious for its time (and some of them still haven't been figured out like allied NPC ais that aren't retarded)

i almost feel like daikatana could use a reboot where we give the ideas another crack with the knowledge we have now and see if it's actually playable

it's too bad he got laid off from whatever he was working on hope he can find a new publisher
>>
>>12824707
i'll pick it up off amazon when i get my next paycheck

when he was telling me about his personal life i was dude you should write a memoir and he didn't really answer me there
>>
>>12824692
Did he ever answer the question about the holes on the cacodemon and pain elemental? Besides a meme answer, Like did they put it in their for realism or, was just like the lora croft situation "Heheh hey john check it out I put a pussy and asshole on the caco."
>>
>>12824719
that's more a question for adrian don't you think
>>
>>12824704
That's odd since Carmack is specializing AI now
>>
>>12824719
Only Sandy has commented on it and claimed that Adrian said it wasn't intended to be an asshole that he just drew it naturally and that's the point where the body would've converged but I call bullshit on that because that would still mean it really is an asshole and Sandy has been called out for making shit up countless times in recent years
>>
>>12824717
I do recommend it, especially if you've already read Masters of Doom. It's a solid companion piece. Romero's prose isn't anything special, but he's incapable of making his life's story boring. His early life is especially wild.

>>12824725
That raises some questions, One question I have if someone were to have relations would it be compatible, actually I mean how smart are the demons, are just unga bunga monsters or like are they sentient? I'm not including new doom I'm wondering purely about doom 1 and 2 lore, cause all of new doom is a fucking mess, and now that every fucking mod is cannon I can't say I care for the cannon beyond the first games.
>>
>>12824732
The funny thing is the id Boys didn't care much about the story or canon either back in the 90s. They more or less ignored Tom Hall's original Doom Bible in favour of focusing on action, abstract level design and making things feel fast and visceral. Deeper lore shit like the motivations of the demons beyond being the things you shot in the face with a big gun was not their focus at all.
>>
>>12824706
But Blood 2 is a turd.
>>
>>12824741
Thats very fair, john carmack did say having story in a game was like having story in a prono, I mean what would you're guys take would be, I mean I'd like to imagine they are sentient still.
>>
>>12824750
They are certainly sentient I would say lower beasts are most feral while things like the Hell Nobles, Mancubus, Spider Demon/Arachnotrons and Cyber Demon are actually intelligent like humans
>>
>>12824750
Based on interviews I've seen from Carmack in recent years, his said that based on the depth of video game stories of the era when he said it. His opinion is a lot different now given how good story-driven games have been in the 20 years after Classic Doom.
>>
>>12824752
>>12824753
I guess at the end of the is I wonder, I mean what demon would be most datable, I could see archviles also being really really smart, seeing as the raise their dead companions, I could see of cacodemons being slightly smart, like maybe the intelligence of like a child, I see pain elemental being smarter, but Idk how I feel about pain elemental gf, that just sounds like a bad time.
>>
>>12824759
Oh for fuck's sake, dude...

>>12824759
Cacos probably have the intelligence of a cat or very young child. Pain Elementals probably that of a dolphin.

i always figured the demons were animalistic retards because all they do is charge at you, though i suppose they must have some intelligence if they can open doors
>>
>>12824767
I feel barons would be very very rough, they are some of the strongest demons in hell, I don't see them having any like gentleness in bed, I see the relationship being them seeing more like a object for sex, rather than relationship partner I mean maybe if you could somehow manage it, but I see hell knights despite the name being gentler and more passionate.
>>
>>12824773
You're going to get your heart broken but by all means continue to lie to yourself.
>>
>>12824770
I think the lower hierarchy ones are and the more elite monsters are more intelligent and tell the lower ones what to do
>>
>>12824776
I mean probably, well who would willing shack with, I can't imagine all the humanity being removed from them, we really don't know much about demons, really, besides my general browsing with occultism Its really hard to gauge how much is still there.
>>
>>12824786
All the humanity removed from what? The zombified monsters? I think most of it is. As for the demons I don't believe they were ever human, like it's not you die and either become and angel or a demon. They were spawned from Hell and have never had humanity. Hell Baron is what I am going with. They're buff and aristocrats. Probably got a massive dong. Arch Viles are too ugly.
>>

Well I wasn't implying gay relationships I'm sure not all of em are dudes, I guess my brain always thought people became the demons depending on how they were in life, Imagine those who were followers of the damn got some luxury, I the zombies I just saw them just being weak solders to broaden hells further assault I mean you don't really see civvies being mixed with the zombies only solders.

Yeah the Former Human, Former Seargant and Former Commando (Zombiemen, Shotgun Dudes and Heavy Weapons Dudes) were UAC soldiers in the facilities that were killed and zombified (or simply transformed) to bolster their assault force. The demons were spawned from the Icon of Sin at least in our dimension.

The existence of Lost Souls implies that they are what happens to people when they go to Hell and the demons are simply the denizens who are spawned by Hell itself.

>>
>>12826402

>>
>>12826408
How easy do you think it be able to do that, I think degrading in strength would be the way to go, like a energy bar. That fills up and lets you have access to more options while making it stronger as you go along.
>>
>>12826420
That would be pretty damn easy to do, Anon. You'd just need to make it so slain enemies give the player a stack of token items, and have an ACS script running in the background that slowly drains that from the inventory. You should also be able to set up some ACS stuff to give the player those token items on kill so you don't have to make custom monsters.
Then it's just a matter of making the weapon's DECORATE code jump to new states and do extra stuff depending on how many of those tokens the player has.

Then you could take it a step further and do shit like freezing the drain for a moment when making kills, or making some of the ammo/item pickups do that, to keep them relevant during play.

>how much pain in the ass it is to make stuff that its not on the editor's grid
Surely there are ways to convert Doom maps to Build? Would it not just be easier to make a map in UDB and only touch Mapster for placing entities and setting sector flags and whatnot?
>>
>>12826552
>Surely there are ways to convert Doom maps to Build?
there are but its a different pain in the ass. Lots of limitations and I would have to spend a lot of time fixing issues that would pop up after the conversion.
>Would it not just be easier to make a map in UDB and only touch Mapster for placing entities and setting sector flags and whatnot?
only if youre making a Doom map. Its retarded, the map that should feel and work as it was designed for Build engine cannot be made in other engine that does support the most important features. Also I personally have 0 experience with UDB

*that does not support
I have trouble nailing down my point but simply put THIS cannot be simply drawn in UDB. Look at how lines overlap each other. Its a top down view of a house with 4 layers of geometry, a roof, 1st and 2nd floors, and basement. They all occupy the same space
>>
>>12826572
Probably just because Doom on modern sourceports is already so much more convenient to mod and map for and can do pretty much everything Build can anyway - to the point where people just make conversion mods for Build engine games rather than modding those games.
>>
>>12826572
this gonna sound like a big load of cope, but mapster is fine for what its made for. Its just needs that final touch of QoL that we never got.
People who dont know the deal seem to think that Build games operate the same way as Doom/IDtech because both are 2.5, both use sector based structure. Its not so simple as it looks, you dont draw static places, you make living ares that can be moved, stretched, changed completely with some magic. they can overlap other rooms.
The what would you can shitty editor has set such a high bar of WhatYouSeeIsWhatYouGet that any attempt to make 'modern' editor failed miserably, was dropped by its dev, or got shat on by the community for missing the point

1992 is when the government started requiring it. They removed them for the Doom guns of course. To this day you can generally just pop them off, theyre usually put on after the rest of the toy is made though nowadays they try to make the whole thing bright colored to avoid that.

Here are the other Doom toy guns. The plasma rifle part at the bottom was just one section of massive Rambo M60 toy that broke down into several parts and shot darts. The laser pistol was mirrored and combined to make the BFG.

Because Buildfags are the battered wives of Mapster32. You either condition yourself to pretend it doesn't fucking suck, or you don't map for these games.
If tomorrow, someone released new and modern software for mapping in Build, I think you'd start to see an increase in people willing to try it. The mindset, however, is that it's not necessary to do, and people will fucking fight you on this.

I get that some level of gatekeeping to ward off shitters and undesirables is valuable, but at the same time, if you constrict bloodflow too much, a community just slowly dies instead.
>>

Oh my bad. Yeah I actually think the Duke shotgun is cooler to be honest.
>>
>>12826890
I was always impressed with how well Adrian's art skills translated into the pixel art constraints of the era. Tom was doing the art for their games until Adrian came along and not only could Tom come up with ideas and Adrian could sketch an amazing art piece based off of, he could also make awesome pixel art even when not using a digitized image which is really a whole other beast.
>>
>>12826889
>If tomorrow, someone released new and modern software for mapping in Build, I think you'd start to see an increase in people willing to try it. The mindset, however, is that it's not necessary to do, and people will fucking fight you on this.
if people who keep crying about bad tools got a modern editor for these games they'd try making a map and then realize that their knowledge of Doom mapping means fucking nothing in this field. An overdetailed labyrinth or slaughterwad sloppa wont fly good there.
>>

>>
>>12826871
Well, you could probably still get it on a hunting license in most countries, with a regular stock.
They're pretty nice, I hear, very easy to pump.

>>12826873
I think they're a reasonable enough compromise. Kids want a cool and realistic looking toy, but the cap generally also makes it obvious from a distance that it's not a real weapon.

I'm more upset at when they require a full bright paintjob. Let the kids dream a LITTLE.
>>
>>12826895
Ah yes, Doom is nothing but labyrinths and slaughter, you're totally not betraying your seething and proving my point.
>>
>>12826897
Romero and Carmack have made up. Carmack has appeared on Zoom calls on Romeros channel along with and Adrian. Carmack says he regrets how quick he was to wanna shit can people back then like Hall and Romero and said he'd have done things differently if he could go back.

That said Carmack is never gonna work on a shooter with them again. I don't know how much if at all Adrian has kept up with modern game art techniques. Probably not at all.
>>
>>12826901
There were several cases in the mid to late 80s of kids getting shot by cops with toy guns, that's why the feds started advising the companies to make them less realistic in the late 80s and outright made it law in 92
>>
>>12826902
>Doom is nothing but labyrinths and slaughter
come on then, what is it? Be honest to yourself. I would even argue that modern mapping scene devolved from its origins in vanilla Dooms. An interesting, somewhat lived in environments of base game look off now in comparison to a bunch of arenas and monster closets that are the common crutch for any modern mapper trying to get that cacoward
>>

a good doom map has well placed:

>difficulty progression (a map that throws a cybie at you when you have nothing i feel is shit)

the best doom maps are also somewhat nonlinear where a secret might get you a shortcut (e1m1 as easy as it is a great map)

there's also aesthetic value to maps you know if they don't look cool it's kinda boring sometimes

>>
>>12826915
a lot of today's stuff goes into pure gameplay and aesthetics without taking care of anything else. Sometimes that can work out, often it doesnt.
You want exploration and keyhunt? you get a grofied fetch quest instead. Sometimes a key is just there for the quota. Want interesting secrets? Shoot a tiny barely noticeable button in some corner to get a medkit, because disrupting mapper's defined balance is a no no. Ambushes fall into two common pitfalls - they either everywhere, making their novelty wear off, or are overblown, which is a slippery slope into a meatgrinder maps. Difficulty progression is a weird one, a lot of wads start off great and progressively turn to shit. I cant name a single wad with a satisfying finale.
I just want Doom. Not whatever is today's stuff. This was a demon shooting game set on Mars's colonies. How did it all turn into these random adventures in every possible setting. its all so out of place to me.
>>
>>12826953
He sort of was in the sense that he's the final boss of the shareware and for many, many people back in the day the shareware WAS Doom. They never bought the full version and we're satisfied with beating Knee Deep in the Dead and saying they beat the game. They were obviously very proud of him as that is why he was made the boss of the shareware episode to ensure everyone saw him and hoping it hooked them to buy the game. But yeah I occasionally have talked to people who aren't really gamers/into Doom who recall playing it back in the day and remember the Cyber Demon as the boss of the game.

Reznor was so occupied with the tour as the new album that he had no time to work on quake 2, plus q2 development changed a lot, and he would had done the most industrial hard tecnobanger ever as he did before and after, the thing is that trent also heard sonic mayhem as jeehun demo disks, and thanks to both quake mission packs as auake and 3 got its music.

And again, trent doesnt hate q2 or even q3, it was time with the band as tour, and he trusted sonic mayhem to fill for him, and here we are.

I still wish that he would had done it, but it would be obviously similar to sonic mayhem in q3a.

3) paying $4.20/gal for gas didn't help it cost $75 to fill from E

at the start of the year i wanted to get a gabecube for black friday but it's way too expensive and while i'm not doing so bad i'm charging food to a credit card like last year i'm still living paycheck to paycheck

i never left this thread, i just stopped posting screenshots

playing doom is kind of retirement for me. i stopped playing the game in either 2009 or 2010 and picked it back up a few years ago

Very very few, I imagine. There may have been a couple of NIN hardcore fans that played Quake due to the music but they more than likely just got the soundtrack on its own. And they were undoubtedly already aware of Quake.

i wasn't play doom at the time i was ruining your thread too busy schizoing out on 15mg a day of valium

a few months later there was something on my news feed about classic doom getting a patch so i was like hmm...what's that about

bought beth doom for my phone and while gamepads work fine the mouse input has awful mouse acceleration so i upgraded to delta touch after i figured out how to get the wads

doing a lot better mentally

now that i played this game for a couple hours for the first time a while it seems doom is fine i can move my arm horizontal but earlier this year i tried to play the cpma bot on some aerowalk and had to abruptly quit after a midair flickrail

so i guess shooting demons is ok but i can't beat up xaero

was just hopping around episode 1 on uv fast experimenting with a movement mod but it just didn't feel right

the doomguy kept bumping his head on the ceiling making it impossible to strafe jump proper and the bhop physics felt way off so i'm not gonna use it

Love'em, even with some questionable map design at times. The way the weapon roster shakes out is a little weird at first, but helps the games feel more distinct, especially how launching enemies with explosives and grenade jumping fits into things. Also the mechanic with running punches is great.

That feel and the built-in focus on plot and such was the reason for getting into building something in AlephOne over GzDoom.

>>12827290
Even as a guy who loves M1 the most as an overall experience, Durandal and Infinity are better for map design, even if Bungie's love for being a bit confusing never goes away.

You know what I have always wondered? What exactly Tim Willits told American McGee about how Carmack wanted Quake II levels to be designed that got him fired? According to Sandy he purposely gave McGee shitty advice to fuck him over on how to design levels for Quake II and when he took the advice and presented the levels to Carmack he got so furious he fired him.
>>
>>12827714
It was Quake 3 Arena not Quake 2. If I had to guess Willits directed him to make big traditional levels or something akin to them instead of small deathmatch levels. But that is a guess.
