The best FPS on PS2 are Urban Chaos Riot Response followed by Cold Winter.
Killzone is in the lower tier alongside the likes of Darkwatch, only something like Goldeneye Rogue Agent is worse. I'd replay Mace Griffin or the PS2 port of NOLF any day over Killzone.

The thing about Killzone is that it hits all the right notes that spoke to the "Mature Hardcore Gamers who play M rated games" young adult crowds of the mid to late 2000's. The tone, art direction, story, and the brain dead gameplay that's actually very casual for a FPS behind its "so hardcore!" look.

But at least some levels look good technically speaking although it's heavily hindered by the "we're only allowed to use 1 colour per level because that's what passes for realism" art direction.
>>
>>12828671
What's your opinion on Black?
>>
>>12828675
I like Black a lot, I think the game is at its best when the levels are very open like the entire forest section. Being this open was very rare for a FPS especially in that era. It also has the coolest explosion effects I've ever in any video game period.
But in the end the game suffers form lack of gameplay variety due to almost every enemy being basically the same, although that's a common flaw with post-Goldeneye 'realistic' shooters which only allow themselves to have human enemies. Still, even with only using human enemies some games manage to have more enemy variety.
>>

Hang yourself, you tasteless fuck
>>
>>12828406
This. It was very much hyped before the release which was the reason why everybody was disappointed when it dropped
>>
>>12828671
Killzone does a good job of depicting grandiose ultra structures and delivering an oppressive feeling in combat, enemy drop ships storm onto scenes and the sound of gunfire overpowers everything except the harsh voices of your attackers as they bark orders to execute you. The level of detail is also worth praise often looking remarkably well thought out and every inch considered by an artist.

But it doesn't play very well. Some levels are kind of crap, I do not care for the swamps at all and the subsequent bunkered out dirt encampments. Some of the earlier front loaded gameplay sections are also pretty weak which doesn't leave a strong impression.
>>

>You cannot claim to enjoy halo but dislike killzone.

>>
>>12828339

Pretty much. This game sucked ass. The PS2 was NOT for FPS games. It had a few titles but never a real Halo competitor. It matters because, hence the video filename, the entire point you're trying to make is "akkktssuaallly you don't need to take cover in Halo", taking cover being how the devs intended it.
The fact that you lose almost all your health and end up with 1 HP is precisely the proof that the point you're trying to make doesn't work.

Doom was never designed for the player to run around circle strafing. This is why in Doom 2 the chaingunners or arch-vile have undodgeable attacks, the game wants you to take cover. This is the key difference with something like Duke Nukem 3D in which hitscan is dodgeable is you move fast enough, and this is also why doombabies hate and don't understand these enemies, because they want to force a playstyle onto the game that it wasn't thought for. If you look at the first Sigil episode, most of the levels are designed to be anti-circle strafing, he just had to do that to force players to play the way he sees Doom.

But that doesn't make Doom a "cover shooter", that's like calling lightgun games "Doom-likes" and being a disingeneous faggot who pretends not to understand the meaning of words as a desperate attempt to make a point. Cover shooter refers to having mechanics specifically designed to entice the player to take cover such as a button to hide, to use a shield, or health/shield regen if you wait long enough.
>>
>>12836685
>Cover shooter refers to having mechanics specifically designed to entice the player to take cover

This is even more retarded than people saying "WTF Resident Evil isn't survival horror, look at all this ammo!". Video game genres are defined by gameplay mechanics and your entire arguement is "this 30 secs video in which the player gets punished for ignoring the gameplay mechanics is proof that these mechanics don't exist!", like a glorified "if I close my eyes the monster is not there! Even if it's hitting me!"

The best part in all that is that in some ways in that video you're playing exactly how the game wants its cover style shooting to be played, and it doesn't mean "camping behind a wall". The area is designed to loop around itself in multiple ways precisely so this fight is more dynamic than just sitting in one spot and the player is forced to run from cover to cover. Every time you remain in the open, the character is so slow that even with your desperate attemps to jump around like it accomplished anything, you get hit, because it's designed that way. When you see a horde of enemies in front of you at 12 secs and immediately run to the other side to grasp a couple of seconds of dead time and then proceed to turn around the staircase to stay behind cover, you're playing the cover shooting Halo wants you to play. At 23s when you run away avoiding the small round melee enemies to give yourself time to reload because there is nothing else you can do, you're playing the cover shooting the game wants to you to play, you're just doing it badly because you still get hit in the process and run straight to where the other enemies are left, getting yourself surrounded and hit more in the process.
>>
any mission in halo where you're with marines incentivizes you to be agressive and kill as quickly as possible. if you turtle behind cover your squads will get wiped everytime.

How did the player get punished? Just pick up a fucking health pack like you would in Doom. For every other room in the game where there aren't Shotgun Floods, the low health wouldn't have even happened; is Doom a fucking cover shooter because a Cyberdemon can wreck your shit in secon
>the cover shooting Halo wants you to play
The only thing any game wants you to do is have fun. You control the buttons you press, and millions of people around the world enjoy Halo because they don't intentionally play it in a way they find unenjoyable, unlike insipid cunts like yourself.
>you get hit
Like in Doom? You've never once proven that the Master Chief is any more vulnerable than Doomguy.
>>
>>12840691
Health packs are pretty rare in Halo 1, especially in AOTCR/Two Betrayals.
>>
>>12840693
>Health packs are pretty rare in Halo 1
Not really. You've never played Halo if you think being comfortably under fire for 30 seconds on the hardest difficulty makes it a cover shooter despite the same strategy being suicidal in Doom.
>>
>>12840696
In later levels, they absolutely are. Maybe if you played past the halfway point you'd know this.
>>
>>12840707
>Maybe if you played past the halfway point
I did, which is how I know that Flood forms holding a shotgun (which, may I remind you, is literally the ONLY thing your claim of Halo being a "cover shooter" rests on) are rare. For all your pretentious talk about how the game "wants to be played", the most obvious, insurmountable elephant in the room that you're too stupid to even think about is the fact that Legendary is not even the intended difficulty: Heroic is, where even a rare shotgun surprise wouldn't be nearly as dangerous—never mind that it was clearly tankable on the hardest difficulty with one's shields at 1/5 strength and one's health already depleted to 3 bars. You've still never once proven that the Master Chief is any more vulnerable than Doomguy, and you should address this if you don't want to be taken for a troll.

>>
>>12840742
Why do you believe the statement applies retroactively? Halo wasn't even meant to be a trilogy.
>>
>>12840691
It's funny you try to pretend "it's all because of one enemy type", first of all, like this enemy type wasn't in the game, secondly this isn't even true because you get hit even by the low level giant fleas which can only hit close range melee.

Secondly, you're still trying to pretend that this is all about difficulty or that the point is moot "if the player ignores the mechanics". As I said genre defining is based on facts, which are gameplay mechanics, and those mechanics exist (which is the "how the game wants you to play" part, which you try to turn around like this is a can ignore even though all games are defined by their rulesets, aka, how the game wants the player to play it).
For example you want to ignore: the shield regen mechanic, which incentizes the player to pace himself and avoid combat in the middle of a fight; coupled with the low supplies of health packs which gives more important to the shield regen than the health pick ups, which all work together with the slow running speed of the character which makes it near impossible to not get hit by everything in the open (which your video demonstrates).

The problem is that you don't know the difference between "I think this is bad cover shooter" and "this is not a cover shooter" (hence my comparison with people equally claiming "Resident Evil is not survival horror, look at all this ammo!", this is the exact same mindset of people who are trying to make claims regarding genres when they never even asked themselves how genre defining works). Trying to argue the later is just factually wrong, what you SHOULD be doing is arguing the former; but your video is also actually a good demonstration of how you'd be wrong about that too because it precisely demonstrates how much punishment the player rightfully recieves if he wants to ignore the mechanics, but I'm not going to repeat all the points you conveniently decide to ignore (such as pretending "it's only because of one enemy type").
>>
>>12840753
>As I said genre defining is based on facts, which are gameplay mechanics, and those mechanics exist
Halo is a cover shooter because it has a mechanic where insipid cunts can intentionally play the game in a way they dislike by you fleeing from battle to heal, but Doom isn't a cover shooter despite also having a mechanic where insipid cunts who intentionally play the game in a way they dislike can flee from battle to pick up health packs?

Please explain how a game where you can't survive being out of cover for 30 seconds on the hardest difficulty (Doom) isn't a cover shooter, but a game where you can (Halo) is. There needs to be perfect logical reconciliation with zero fallacies, go:
>>
>>12840757
Halo is a cover shooter because its health system is designed around avoiding combat.
Doom is not a cover shooter because its health system is designed around finding items on the map.
>>
>>12840761
>its health system is designed around avoiding combat
This is disproven by the fact you can clear an entire encounter on the hardest difficulty without avoiding combat. Try again.
>>

Killzone is a series that looks a whole lot cooler than it really is. They are constantly putting the Helghast in the marketing and box covers only to then force you to always play as ISA who suck massive balls. In my opinion I think this series got a bad direction right from the start. If they wanted a Halo killer Sony should have been ordering Guerilla to make a literal science fiction shooter that was about humanity fighting aliens. Just like what Halo was about. Instead they overthought this imo making Helghast the bad guys when they should have been the cool as fuck human faction you actually play as. So a very mishandled IP overall that should have had a wildly different direction. Although I had a ton of fun with KZ2 and KZ3 anyway.

Also if you were playing the PS2 version and not the remaster I highly doubt it was a stable 30fps throughout. I remember that game having such abysmal control and framerate. I lasted I think only 1 mission before dismissing it as a trash mediocre game. I would like to go back one day to play it but I doubt it would leave a better impression on me.

I didn't, you're just bad at the game and using the false argument that Legendary is the intended difficulty anyway.

My hype for Killzone evaporated when I realized you arent playing as the notJinRoh guys

Halo has wide open levels with multiple objectives.
Killzone has linear scripted missions.

Halo has enemies that use evasive tactics and varying reactions based on enemy types.
Killzone enemies have minimal intelligence and are just barely a step above static turrets.

Halo has vehicles.
Killzone has zero vehicles.

Halo has varied level design ranging across multiple biomes with both claustrophobic interiors and wide open outside areas.
Killzone has nothing but urban corridors.

Halo has combat that can change based on your own strategy and weapon choice.
Killzone's combat never changes. I don't even think the AI can throw grenades.

They play nothing alike.
