about to boot up tntif i beat ep 4 and doom 2 on uv -fast with should i just play this the same way or should i play on regular uv/hmp and learn the layouts firsti hear this wad has too many heavy weapons dudes so -fast might make me sad
>https://files.catbox.moe/0gj4rg.mp4Bringing this up from the previous thread, anyone know the song that plays in this? Almost wanna say it's Buckethead from Sigil's OST even tho it's Sunlust.
>>12833679Sounds like a rendition of the level cleared theme from the original Doom. The guy who plays with the huge crosshair is right here, he'll probably tell you.
>>12833679You sure you can see that crosshair? Seems a bit small to me, very hard to see, took me almost the entire video to realise it's there.
>>12833679There's a reason this absolute donkey >>12833683 thinks it sounds like a remix of OG Doom music. Here's your hint : https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Doom_music

holy shit i'm badi'm on a new blood pressure pill and it's kicking my ass so instead of play tnt i decided to try an ep 1 pistol start on normal speed instead of fastwhat the hell happened here? did i get bad rng?i was going to post a video of me playing like absolute garbage cause it's kinda funny but the file is too big for cuckbox. i got so dizzy i zoned out in e1m3 and forgot to get a key loli'm considering making a "quick" mode mod where the monsters and projectiles move fast, but they don't attack or react fasterdo you think this would appeal to anyone>>12833757i have nerve failure and i tore my shoulder but there are people in worse condition than me playing this game. what i've noticed is doom is going fine but quake isn't, because i can move my arm horizontal just fine but if i try to move vertical too quickly i might blow my shoulder outtomorrow i meet with an ortho surgeon and i should know what i'm in for. i'm under the impression i'm going to be in a sling for 1-2 months so i'm trying to play as much doom and shitpost on 4chan as i can in the meantime cause i'm gonna be off the grid for quite a bitthe first surgeon i talked to said he wanted to attribute it to old age and didn't want to do the surgery so he sent me to a different surgeon for a second opinion. i can barely do my fucking laundry or make LOTSA SPAGHETTI so hopefully the new doc understands i really need to get this over with
>>12833797Fuck. Good luck anon. If you're in the USA our healthcare system leaves much to be desired and is a pain in the ass.
>>12833801yeah i've been getting jerked aroundi went to physical therapy twice and i just got worsei had an MRI auth rejected which really slowed things down but i won the appealif i had it my way i would have been operated on in march when it was obvious i wasn't going to get better

>>12833958Metroid: Demon Hunter, a now-abandoned GZDoom fork of Metroid: Dreadnought. This is the one I'm using. The "stable" release has the less fancy cannon for the Power Beam.https://github.com/OrdinaryVanity/mdh/tree/experimentalI'm just doing some little edits. A bigger one was unfucking the item spawns so they're not as random.
>>12834036I'm also doing a lot of the same stuff to the Dreadnought Overhaul, this same dude's project before he forked it off into Demon Hunter.https://www.moddb.com/mods/metroid-dreadnought/downloads/metroid-dreadnought-overhaulIt's "simpler" and doesn't have stuff like the charge beam sucking items in and has fewer powerups, but it also doesn't have weird models and doesn't require you to load two other pk3s with it.

ok, after i hit enter i realized dsda will always be useful but i think a lot of ports are just gonna become interesting historical footnotes by the year 2100 or soi'm not talking about tomorrow i'm talking about doom as a cultural legacy
>>12834329I think people will definitely still play doom then too. It will never die or go away. Truly the peak of gaming. There are other good games too but none with the same appeal and longevity. There's a doom for everybody!
>>12833721It's the drums. Every time, every track. The rest is fine, but his drum machine skills are so fucking bad, and it's the only part that hasn't improved over the time at all, I would say with 100% certainty that he's using AI for the drum parts if he wasn't doing the equally clean sterile soulless monotone boring robotic flat mundane sound for what, ten years already? Even Godflesh and The Berzerker in 90's had drums that feel less robotic and are much more fun to listen. That's why I enjoy his ambient tracks without drums more.
>>12834359first off, he recorded everything before ai slop existedsecond off, he's a guitarist. not everyone is trent reznor who can play every instrument on the planethe wasn't trying to make money when he got started he just wanted to make some covers and just happened to make it big
>>12833919>doom has working mirrors>modern AAAA games with billionaire budgets and 10 year dev cycles don't
>>12834369i had a nightmare that they released one of those HD remasters for classic doom where all the levels and gameplay were the same it was just modern AAA graphic slop. the nightmare part was that newfags were shitting up this threadthe weird part about the dream is that between levels there were halo style cutscenes starring this motherfucker as the doom guy so that was really confusing seeing the rock as the status portrait
>>12834372Zoom 2016 and the other modern doom games are basically that, minus the rock.
>>12834379no it wasn't a rip and tear doomgod it was more like survival horror doom 3 with even better graphics and like i said, halo style cutscenes with 3rd person dialogue and some general on the radio from mars telling the doomguy where to go next
>>12834326>it's only a matter of time before they fork zandronum netcode inBetter not be Marisa back again, that fuckup genuinely believed that was going to happen.
>>12834496no i'm the other zdoom fag in this threadi only heard they were planning on doing it from here and as someone with a lot of programming experience i know that certain mods that are too script heavy just aren't going to work off LAN
>>12834503It's never going to happen, shit's not remotely compatible, it's why they had to opt for fixing up the packet server stuff to suck less.

>>12834638Yea, it's gay and you don't have to click it. But I wanted to paste some source instead of just seeming that I'm pulling that stuff out my ass. The most important thing is that Sandy gets raped.
>>12834654redpill me on sandy, i don't know what he did wrongi like downtown. is there something wrong with me?
>>12834674Till recently mostly just stupid 30+ year old fanboy bullshit for not being John Romero.
>>12834674Mostly being a forgetful old man and creating the blob spawn enemy in Quake. And his levels aren't the greatest. Lately he tried making a doom memecoin thing and it is turbo gay to attempt to fleece what fanbase you may have, regardlessof who you are. And he is a Mormon. This information is based on mostly what I've read in threads posted on /vr/, other people may have more information.
>>12834772>Lately he tried making a doom memecoin thingDidn't make it, just promoted it.
>>12834775Thanks for the clarification! I know nothing about it beyond what I typed above.
>>12834326ZScript isn't compatible with Zandybam's netcode, it'll never happen.
>>12834795so fix it? i'm sure they can at least support netplay over LAN, and if they can get a clusterfuck like halo 3 working online i don't see the problemanything that's using excessive scripting won't work but simpler mods that don't make 1000 function calls should be fine
>>12834802
>>12834674I like his maps on Quake and Doom, also spawns. But lately he "made" crypto scam Doom browser game. He claims that he made new maps (thet are just freedoom maps). He effectively stained both Doom's and Freedoom's name. I hate Bethesda, but in this case I'm glad Bethesda stops his faggotry.
>>12834674At most generous, he's a dogshit businessman who effectively ran scams on people in the /tg/ community multiple times with Kickstarter games that promised things his company was not in any way prepared to deliver on in full - which he obviously didn't deliver on in full or delivered nothing at all, before moving onto the next Kickstarter game while leaving the previous ones outstanding - and is allowed to fail upward due to being an oldguy. At worst, he's a self-aggrandizing liar who deliberately suckered hundred of thousands of dollars out of people rather than through well-meaning stupidity/incompetence.I know he was influential in id and for helping to put Lovecraft back in popular culture through the Call of Cthulhu RPG and all, but if it looks like a grifter and quacks like a grifter, it's a grifter. The crypto bullshit doesn't help either.
>>12833980You might like Time Tripper
>>12834802>so fix it? i'm sure they can at least support netplay over LAN, and if they can get a clusterfuck like halo 3 working online i don't see the problemThat's like going>just Frankenstein parts of a duck onto a chicken to make it aquatic already, they're both birds and the platypus already exists so make it work already

>>12835065it's all 1s and 0s manall that decomp shit going on lately i thought was impossible toorunning doom on a computer the size of a poker deck i thought would be impossible toorunning zscript over the web will be very bandwidth intensive but there's no reason you can't aside from "it's too hard to program"so the jizzydoom netcode needs a total overhaulat the bare minimum they could fork zandronum netcode into the game and only enable it with zandronum mods but still allow all the other nice features the mod has (there are a lot of cvars missing that bother me)this is more of if we can put a man on the moon then we can figure this out sort of thing
Tim Willits did nothing wrong.
I'm at work so I can't just try it right now and I'm impatient. If I wanna play some WADs through gzdoom with a controller do I just plug it in and I'm good to go? If so do I need to configure anything to make it better? I prefer mouse/keyboard but I wanna play before I go to bed and get comfy.

>>12835351I thought everyone thought he was an even bigger faggot than Sandy?
I like quake and its goofy guys
>>12835361He is, guy is universally despised. That was the retro FPS version of "Hitler did nothing wrong" since the guy is just about as hated in the community. Lied about countless things, snaked American McGee and got him fired, fucked people over left and right to climb the ladder and eliminate people he felt threatened by.
>>12835375I was reading about American Mcgee and he had a really fucked up childhood
>>12835373Orbb
>>12835376Carried onto his adult life in a lot of ways, his sister disappeared some years back after some fucker was making threats about her to American on social media and the police went out of their way to not even look into it.It's no wonder he took to living on a boat in the middle of nowhere.
>>12835376Yeah I think his solo games suck ass desu but he seems like a good guy. Willits apparently told him how Carmack wanted levels in Quake 3 to be (the exact thing he said hasn't been disclosed so who knows but it was the exact opposite of what Carmack wanted) when American presented the maps to Carmack he fucking flipped out and fired him. He tried to explain what happened but Carmack wasn't having it and shitcanned him. Tim did that on purpose.
>>12835379Orbb
>>12835383I thought Alice was pretty good but I'll admit I only played about half of the game

>>12835387>And then that Bad Day LA or whatever it's called is a fucking disaster.I see what you did there.
>>12835383You know that very well could've been a orchestrated thing with Willits and Carmack to get rid of American for whatever reason. Id is full of this weird cloak and dagger bullshit due to Carmacks autism
>>12835393He's known to have pulled this shit at other companies, and is a well known credit thief and massive fucking liar who has been called out on crap like claiming he personally invented DM maps.
>>12833721Honestly I like Hulshult's older Doom stuff, I just think his broader body of work feels pretty samey, which I consider a knock when he's reinterpreting other people's work which doesn't always quite fit that.
>>12835396Oh I know he's a piece of shit but for Carmack to react so harshly tells me there must've be some kind of tension there already. Then again it could've been Tim Wormtongue simulatenously talks shit about American to Carmack and then doing the snake shit to American. Because Carmack dismissed American saying Tim told him that and fire him.
>>128340922:48 https://files.catbox.moe/2oot6u.lmpan imp didn't teleport in twice in my previous attemptso don't wanna grind it
>>12833797I've been on blood pressure meds for a little while, didn't really feel like it affectedy my gaming.>>12833758You should make some MIDIs, it'd be nice to have a few black metal sounding ones for some levels.
>>12835393True, such as the weird way they went about firing Tom Hall, with Carmack telling Romero they should fire him but didn't wanna do it himself so they asked Romero to do it since they were friends. Romero had him at house for dinner to do it but ended up having such a good time he couldn't do it. This resulted in the company instead having a mock conference and vote even though Carmack had already told everyone to vote him to fire him, the decision was already made but for appearances to Tom they had this meeting and everyone individually voted yay or nay to fire him. Of course everyone voted yes
>>12835404He's basically the Jeremy Soule of "retro" FPS games, everything sounds the same and companies can't get enough of it for some reason.
>>12835414* Sorry for the weird typos/grammar I'm on some pretty heavy pain meds
>>12835414Damn, poor Tom. Imagine sitting there and watching all your coworkers vote to shit can you. He was doing some dumb shit for Doom though, making big empty space maps based on real military bases instead of making it fun.
>>12835419The mapping tools weren't even complete, he was doing what he could at the time. He mostly got the boot because he argued with John Carmack, mostly arguing for stuff like flying enemies and teleporters, which Carmack didn't want to add.
>>12835414>"Man I'm telling you John, American insists on making these dumb ass maps instead of what you wanted for the game... I even tried to tell him and he said "Fuck Carmack, I do what I want... Can you believe that??"Yeah I could see it
>>12835414Several former id employees have said that it's essentially what was going on, Tim played both sides against each other so he could eliminate competition.
>>12834573He's right, ZScript isn't compatible with client/server multiplayer, which is why GzDoom and now UzDoom (remember, no Graf) never changed to client/server multiplayer, and why Zandronum has never even tried implementing ZScript.>>12835383American was fired before Quake 3, I think, and Tim trying to trick him into making bad maps was during the first Quake, and I'm pretty sure they outright caught Tim doing that.
>>12835430I think he was fired during Quake 3s early stages? I'm not sure the story came from Sandy and some other employees I think but the specific game wasn't mentioend
>>12834979I want to think it's the former and that he's just finally becoming senile. It's gentler on my heart.
>>12835383That's just makes Carmack look like a faggot though.
>>12834674I mostly like his Doom and Quake levels.>>12835436It might have been early Quake 3 development when he was fired.I think it was somehow Willits who fired him as retaliation for something Carmack did.>>12835440It's not fully accurate.
>>12835421The mapping tools were something that that was pretty complete early, but they lacked textures and assets. He could've added more verticality to his maps and such, but they hadn't really sussed that out yet.>>12835421My understanding is that he was hung up on the doom bible and everyone else wanted to move away from it and distill the gameplay.
>>12835440Well he's a fuckin autist and yes he was a pretty iron fisted task master starting with secretly installing a program on Romeros computer to log when he was actually doing work and when he was playing deathmatch in Doom then had a company meeting to confront him with that and have everyone vote to fire him. Once he was gone yeah Carmack became a tyrant about people utilizing work time to the fullest and maximizing their productivity. He's a weird autist but admittedly he was working himself constantly, that's kind of why he became that way. He wanted everyone working as hard as he did. He has said he regrets the way he was back then and would do it differently if he could go back.
>>12835351>defending kick attackmountain dew won
>>12835450>starting with secretly installing a program on Romeros computer to log when he was actually doing work and when he was playing deathmatch in Doom then had a company meeting to confront him with that and have everyone vote to fire him.Not what happened. That was actually on the Strife team. Some higher up was supposedly inspired by Carmack's work ethic and thought everyone on his team should be monitored to make sure they were putting in 110%.
>>12835469I read that actually didn't happen either. That all of it is urban legend, both the Carmack version and the Strife version.
>>12835478Nah it's pretty well known that the guy running the original studio was (and still is) a dick.Rogue Entertainment came about for a very good reason.
>>12835478I'm just going by what was said in Doom Guy. It all ends up becoming he said she said type stuff, but I've read just about everything out there about development and who remembers what and how. Romero isn't infallible, but his accounts g e n e r a l l y jive with accepted historical truth. In 100 years, who's gonna care?
>>12835509Romero does have a photographic memory after all (except when it comes to REKKR)
>>12835373whos the stupid bitch
Anyone know where to download the book Masters of Doom for free in PDF format? Ana's Archives is down forever
>>12835514>Romero does have a photographic memoryPhotographic memories don't exist, people think they have them because they have a good memory and become a liability later in life when it starts to fail but they're convinced they're utterly infallible so whatever they imagine is the undeniable truth and don't you dare question it because they go batshit over that.
>>12835514He's been mistaken, omissive, or has massaged the truth about a few things, or at least been self-contradictory.I was going to write a list of these things for when his recollection comes up (it was brought up so commonly when he was correcting Sandy, but I'm sure the truth is often somewhere in the middle there, on at least a few points)... but that seemed pretty fuckin petty so I didn't.I'll just autistically keep reading every old interview, .plan, and salvaged newgroup post I can find.
>>12835526>but I'm sure the truth is often somewhere in the middle there, on at least a few pointsYeah I've noticed that a few times where it's pretty obviously one of those workplace things where nobody knows the full facts but think they do, so they start talking over each other as the one true expert.
>>12835526Would you please? It's not petty when it's a guy who literally boasts in every single interview he does that he has a photographic memory therefore the version he is going to give you is infallible. And I know he generally doesn't outright lie Tim Willits style, he is much more subtle as you said with perhaps "massaging" the truth as you said. This makes it much more difficult to spot them so a list of things you've noticed would be quite interesting.

>>12835520Just remember it's not wholly accurate either. Romero corrects it in his biography "Doom Guy" in many ways, including this: >>12835450Despite saying prior that it was "all true" (pic).>14+ years agoGood thing I have photographic memory or I wouldn't have been able to search for this extra petty example.>>12835550It feels silly, I'm sorry.
>>12835561that's one horrible looking font
>>12835609Beggars can't be choosers
>>12835585Oh come on, you've spent all this time autistically reading everything you can find, you're literally doing historical research on the subject. It's fine to share. You can make a disclaimer beforehand if you feel silly. What you're doing has merit and you should share at least SOME of your interesting findings even if it isn't the list specifically or a few examples.
>>12833867I only found NDCP2 because a few months ago I was wondering how the flat colored lighting in vanilla maps featured in brutal doom and grezzo due worked. I forgot gldefs had more features than brightmaps and basic lights so after a couple dozen searches later I found the answer, however along the way I found a screenshot from doomworld of a wad called "The Ultimate Doom Forever" which had an angled pistol sprite that I had seen before in skulltag weapon mods but turns out this was it's origin wad along with all other weapons angled (not the same angled pistol from obituary 1995) and it's not visible in the screenshots but it's filled with tons of colored lights, it's a doom legacy wad but it works almost fully in zandronum just fine besides some z-fighting textures and a single 3D door in the start of the last map, you can noclip through and the rest will work. I really loved it and it's aesthetic and looked into the creator jetflock and found all few of his wads have this same really cool style, textures, custom monsters and really silly awesome graphic edits. His bunch of maps in NDCP2 are good (except map 19 I don't like pretentious instant death trap "puzzle" shit like that). I highly recommend ultimate doom forever and his Christmas wad "Better Late Than Never" as it is really silly and endearing, it's only 1 map but the second dm map in it has some out of bounds funny edits.https://www.doomworld.com/files/file/13931-the-ultimate-doom-forever-a-new-detailed-version-of-doom-forever-with-new-levels-graphics-sounds/https://www.doomworld.com/idgames//index.php?search=1&field=author&word=jetflock(There's an earlier version of forever on /newstuff chronicles #176 with screenshots and shows different maps and sprites, I have searched the entire Internet and cannot find an archive of it so if someone has a forever.zip with a "forever2.wad" from april 2004 please post it.)
Thanks, God!Anyway that's a really good map. I like maps that are like small world on its own you can explore.>>12833980Also check out Altruzehttps://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/155644
>>12835678Man, that is pretty cool, but the completely flat lighting does the area a disservice.
>>12833980The Telly Redialed maps are pretty brightly lit for the most part.https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/154021
>>12835635Lol that TITLEPIC looks like bodycam footage of a cop trying to apprehend a drunk Doomguy in front of a food truck
Anybody interested in trying Q2 deathmatch on yquake2?
>>12835749no, but sometimes i think of renting a cpma server in NYC. it's really not that much money
I just opened the server listhttps://q2servers.com/and I'm surprised there are plenty of servers with actual people. Unlike Q3
>>12835815That's bready good. What is that from?>>12835519Quake Champions Nyx
>>12835772anyway joined some duelwas obliterated 50:1 :D
>>12835830don't get discouragedi can beat people 50 to 1 and there are people who beat me 50 to 1 right back
I was rummaging through some old files and found this screenshot, I know its burl tumb but does anyone recognize the wad used with it? I'm pretty sure it was like a rebuilt E1-E4 type of deal
>>12835837you know, i thought that was just e2m8, but i checked and it doesn't have that staircasedefinitely the map it's based on though
What gzdoom settings can I change when there is a moment where a ton and I mean a ton of sprites and projectiles appear, to stop gzdoom from slowing to a crawl and eventually crashing?
>>12833564I doubt I'll have many chances to post this again.
>>12835848At some point you just need a better computer, lil bro.
>>12835858Harsh times to upgrade in.
>>12835863I feel you.
>>12835553>>12835561Got it. It's a very interesting read
>>12835585So Carmack and Romero got along really well in the beginning? They seemed like best friends, during their early days in Shreveport
>>12834496nah, what I believed was that these dolts would try implementing client/server in the way unreal tournament does it, where you have to write your own netcode in unrealscript for mods to work online.not that I would give a shit because I don't care for multiplayer. never bothered making anything in ut work outside of botmatch anyway, never bothered to learn all that simulated autonomous reliable replication proxy role garbage.
>>12833980Headless ChickenPretty fun mapset, but UV is pretty gnarly at times, so don't be afraid to dabble on HMP or lower.
>>12835921That train map is pretty fucking great, so is the next level starting on the same train that you've obviously crashed.
>>12835867It's a great book, it's one I read in like one sitting, few books grab me like that but this one did. Another one was Marilyn Manson's autobiography if you can believe it. I am not even a fan of him really, hes ok. But his book is a great read. I read it in a day.

>>12835930Yea I don't even like to read much, but Masters of Doom is written in an exciting tone, capturing the excitement of the early 90s gaming industry. I haven't been able to put it down either
