This game's super good. You can see why Japanese people went crazy for it when it released. First Famicom game that has some heft to it, 50 levels, it takes well over an hour to beat all of them for the first time, unlike every previous game which was either an arcade port or sports game. Instead of a battery save they just let you open the level select whenever you want, it's not even a secret it's just the select button, that's pretty cool.
You can't really see how good it is from the first two levels, but once you get to around level 9 you'll see that it's a pretty clever puzzler.
It released way too late in the US but it still holds up imo. It's also interesting to see how much game you can get out of a number of assets you can easily count on your fingers.

But it released in the US first for the Apple II

This one is also pretty good and hella underrated

I mean the NES version but yeah
I know the computer versions are objectively better (better view of levels + way more levels) but I think Hudson's cutesy designs were instrumental in making it sell millions in Japan

>50 levels
The original game had 150 levels, the Famicom port cut two thirds of it.

I love Lode Runner a lot but I don't really like the NES version because of the scrolling screen, it works better as a single screen game where you can see where the enemies are and plan ahead. This became the standard for Japan-developed Lode Runners though. I think only the Irem and Psikyo arcade games were single screen Japanese installments. And I don't know of a single screen console version except for the PS1 game which was western developed.

Okay but consider that for the Famicom, before Lode Runner, the game with the highest amount of stages was Golf with 18. Also ignore Nuts & Milk they actually released on the same day, Wikipedia just has the wrong source.
