Do people just pretend to like this game because they played it as a small child? This shit is terrible.
pretty standard beat-em-up what's wrong?
>>12878953>standard beat'em upNo, not really. Are you thinking of the arcade game?OP this game is and was hard as fuck, I never saw anyone get much further than the dam. I didn't own it until many years later and I can't get past the dam still. I'm not that into tmnt so I just moved on to other shit.
>>12878951>Do people just pretend to like this game because they played it as a small child? This shit is terrible.i do like it but it's one of the worst nes games i've ever owned/played. has great music and graphics. the actual game is garbage .i'm conflicted.it's a shame that the actual game is a broken and buggy pile of shit. the pal version is atrocious. they didn't even attempt to fix it properly for some ungodly reason>>12878953that's the arcade version, faggot
>>12878963getting past the dam +underwater is a fucking miserable experience
>>12878951i remember being blown away that I could drive the turtle van. I was like 8 or something. I had never seen a game before that where you could walk around and then get in a car and drive around then get out and walk around again and stuff.
I like it, but I did play it as a kid.Never beaten Tecnodrome.
>>12878951It's a pretty ambitious game and not at all bad. AVGN did tremendous damage to the games reputation for years due to the early retarded fan base (which the internet retro gaming scene itself largely sprang out of) taking everything the character said as gospel and thus labeling it a cowabunga piece of dog shit.It is experiencing a rehabilitation of it's reputation in the scene due to it growing out of those early days and reexamining games with a more open mind.
>>12878980You forgot that there was another youtuber that damaged the game in the recent years, see the people ITT complaining it's "a buggy pile of shit", because that youtuber nitpicked shit that doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things and even though you could make the same nitpicked argument with games considered masterpieces by everyone. So now it's back to shitting on the game because the youtuber said so, and people will tell you it has nothing to do with the youtuber and "they knew about it since they were kids" even though those points were never brought up by anyone before
>>12878984meds grass sex
>>12878984Who is the JewTuber damaging the game now? Scott the Wop or whatever? Some zoomer?
>>12878984>see the people ITT complaining it's "a buggy pile of shit", because that youtuberi bought the game when it was new. it was always a buggy pile of shit. did the youtubers go back in time to make the code fucking shit? i didn't see any youtuber appear to make the fucking scoreboard flicker or force so many sprites onto the screen that the nes couldn't draw them all. did the youtubers go to japan and shit on the progammer's desk while he was trying to code it? what's that, fucking retard? NO? surprising. the game was always a poorly coded mess.
>>12878986Sounds like my average Friday night!
>>12878990I had it when it was new and I always found it to be charmingly janky. I never noticed anything I'd call an outright bug. Flickering is just normal in NES games. That's a stupid thing to focus on. This game feels kinda messed up in more substantial ways than that. (Also, it is fun and, yes, good.)
>>12878989usual story:>zoomer/retard hasn't seen game in 30-40 years>sees video of someone being critical of its flaws>tmnt has many flaws. some that can be game breaking>have metal breakdown at video because reviewer's opinions don't match memory from 40 years ago>THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING! HOW DARE YOU! (game) WAS A MASTERPIECE! THERE'S NO BROKEN NES GAMES! >start crying uncontrollably>eternally seethe
>>12878976>Never beaten Tecnodrome.same
>>12878996Who was the other YouTuber? Put a name on it.
>>12879000I think there was some guy who breakdowns code in old NES games and explained why coding wise the game has the flaws it does. Don't remember who. Maybe that's who they mean.
>>12878990Nobody likes to admit they get "their" opinion from youtube now do they. The only time I saw someone point out the flickering HUD (it's not a "scoreboard") in all the years prior was an anon in the romhacking thread who actually knew what he was talking about and probably guessed correctly that Konami was too cheap to use MMC3 for the game. I did an (unreleased) romhack of the game and even I didn't give a shit about that, noone did, just like nobody ever noticed that the hit detection of the underwater rotating trap (which only appears within a multi path you don't even have to go through) was off a couple pixels but now everyone points out to the underwater stage being "buggy", but they've known that since they were kids, totally has nothing to do with that one video spending 5 minutes nitpicking the whole thing
>>12878990I definitely remember the usual too many sprites-now-the-game-gonna-slow-to-a-crawl but beyond that I can't think of any real issues. Some hit boxes are gay and unfair maybe.
>>12879002>Konami was too cheap to use MMC3 for the gamegame was designed for mapper 1 or somerthing so can't unring that bell. irq handlers are always nice but tmnt's code won't run faster or better. it's not great code. you can use mapper0/1 tricks like waiting (x) cycles or sprite 0 trick but if your routines are so dogshit that they consume way too many cycles then you're fucked. irq, sprite 0,cycle wait not going to help you when your code is garbage. you can't take up more time than actually exists for everything to run.>noone didpeople complained about nes flickering graphics and visuals doing all kinds of stupid shit since it was released lmao.
>>12878980AVGN wasn’t supposed to be taken seriously
>>12878951Most NES games are fucking garbage, people just don't realize it.
People don't give enough credit to how well it stick to the source material, and this was 1989, they may have had less to work of off than the 1990 movie. You can play as all 4 turtles and each one is distinct. It's amazing how people take this for granted when the average licensed game just takes ONE playable character, I mean look at some of the Astérix games which don't have a playable Obélix (and which even have him "captured" which makes no sense at all). And then compare to the arcade game / TMNT2 in which you can play as all 4 turtles yes, but they're just palette swaps, they're all the same characters with the same moves. It has Splinter, April, Shredder, The Technodrome, Beebop & Rocksteady, foot clan, mousers, the turtle van, the turtle blimp, etc all in character or ways that make sense with the source materialThe story is very developed for an NES game and each level has its own story arc which could be an episode from the show or an arc from the comicsThere are some OC enemies because Konami figured footclan soldiers and mousers weren't enough variety... until they realized what people wanted was the footclan guys x200 with different colours and different weapons even though that doesn't really happen in the source material either. But some of the OCs felt like they could belong, like the giant toad which is something the game did before the cartoon. The average shitty licensed game would be like "You're playing as Leonardo and your brothers have been captured!" and then you play in cliché video game locations like "lava world" and "ice world" and then Shredder appears as a final boss. And then you have NES Batman from the same year and the Joker is summoning lightning by lifting his hand in the air and people are like "WOW, best Batman game EVER!!!">>12878951> because they played it as a small child? Here are two adult players reviews from 1989
>>12878951>Do people just pretend to like this game because they played it as a small child?m8 thats the entire point of this board
>>12879059It plays not that far off Castlevania really, it feels good when you are able to keep all your characters alive for the next level. Leonard being good at getting enemies above, Konami you've done it again. At least its not as generic as Cool Spot and Soccer Kid.
>>12878951what even is the box art supposed to be?
>>12879149technodrome id guess
>>12878974I remember being upset that they didnt dual weild like in the show.
>>12879149on the wings of the turtle blimp
It's pretty much the distilled essence of cognitive dissonanceit's mediocre at best, and canceraids at worst, but since it released during the height of turtlemania, nobody wanted to hate it so they forced themselves to play through it despite how shit it was
>>12878953Isn't it a hack and slash?
>>12879059Right, sure, but the sunsoft Batman NES game is much better as a game, so I don't know, pick your poison?
>>12880262I'm not sure I agree with that, 1989 Batman is overrated because it has great presentation but I don't find it that much fun to actually play. Too much of the game hinges on subweapons, rather than being things that help but which aren't always mandatory like in Castlevania or TMNT, and there are too many pixel wall jumps even though precision doesn't go well in hand with wall jumping.TMNT has different kind of flaws but I find the experience much more consistant and memorable; and I'd say NES Returns and Return of the Joker are just as good overall as 89 Batman, they just didn't come out at the height of Batmania
>>12878967I forgot thay underwater is AFTER the dam, I can't get past the water part.
>>12880149This is accurate
>>12879048No shit, but if you were around for the early years and the retro gaming scene on YouTube and elsewhere and sprung up in his wake, they absolutely did take him seriously.
NES games where never good
There was a time half of all American NES owners only had three games: Mario, Duck Hunt, and TMNT.Everyone was disappointed it wasn't the arcade game and they only played it when they wanted a break from Mario.
>>12882538I had Golf too
>>12880252it's more of a character action game
>>12882675kek, character action fags are all commies owned by jews.>did i do it right, jew-sama?
>>12878951top 3 games you want to love all timethe overworld was mindblowing
>>12878951No. I hated the game as a child. I like it now because I got gud.
>>12879149The translocation matrix
>>12878980>>12879048People just seem butthurt about AVGN out of principle but are people really going to act like those weren't legit complaints? Most people found the dam level frustrating, putting a health powerup in an area that's impossible to reach is a dick move, having a hole on a floor that you jump over by not jumping makes no sense and Donatello is just way more useful than the rest of the Turtles
>>12882814AVGN became popular by airing out complaints us 80's/90's kids all had about those games. We laughed hard 'cuz we agreed. It's just zoomers who played with save states or rewind that don't get it.
>>12882892>We laughed hard 'cuz we agreed.you laughed because you're a brain damaged fucking idiot entertained by morons of the internet that don't actually play games. they sit in front of a camera pretending they do. my god you are fucking dumb.>>12882814chad post
>>12882812>having a hole on a floor that you jump over by not jumping makes no sensemaybe it was to show the player it was possible so they could use it in the sewer sections if they wanted because a bunch of jumps there have the same 1 tile gap
>>12882812>Donatello is just way more useful than the rest of the TurtlesThis isn't true, Raph is the best turtle once you get good because Donatello is too slowalso those things are nitpicks in the grand schemes, and you forget things that are blatantly wrong like claiming "turtles can't swim", even though the turtles CAN fucking swim in the game and it's the current they can't do anything against, and only talking about new enemies to claim the game has nothing to do with the source material, while ignoring everything else that makes it more respectful to the source material than the vast majority of licensed games at the time (and after its time); things which every impressionnable midwit still believes to be true about the game.
