Nearing the end of Eviternity 2, it's been fun but I really haven't been feeling the final chapter. I think this is a big problem with Doom wads, 30 maps is a lot and I find they can outstay their welcome, even really good ones like this.
>>
>>12893735
Joe Siegler always was teh best Duke VA.
>>
>>12894151
Same here. Even if a megawad follows the typical Scythe 2 format and changes up the theme for each episode every seven or so maps, I tend to get tired of it by the end too.
I think that for the kind of modern Doom mapping tropes, you ideally should just make a single episode, maybe two. A full megawad of those things, no matter how good, will inevitably tire you out.
Hell, sometimes just having a single larger than average map is enough.
>>
>>12894178
i handle this by playing multiple wads in a session

once i die on a map 10 times in a row i go check out something else or replay a map i enjoyed
>>
>>12894183
Cool, but the problem doesn't cease to exist when it leaves your attention. I'm saying that megawads are just too much to get through even with breaks and epiodes are a better format to enjoy Doom.
>>
>>12894151
>>12894197
It's been something I've said for ages, that 32 is way too big for solo efforts and even stuff like Going Down suffers from trying to fill out that many maps.

It's also just a miserable time mapping by yourself compared to doing 10-12 or so maps.

It won't work on DOS, why did you remove "Limit-removing"?
It would've made more sense to keep LR instead, or better yet, to leave it all alone by pruning the older news.

>>

This shit isn't dogma. We can talk shit or praise it and nothing's gonna happen.

>>12894221
I don't think I'll ever make 32 maps. I can barely complete one these days.
>>
>>12894254
my problem is failing to complete maps

i had like 5 or 6 incomplete maps in quake 1/2/3 (every time i had a new quake i would port the geo to the next one and still never finish it) like 3 unfinished maps in halo and never really seriously tried to make a doom map. i did make one doom deathmatch map ever but it was kind of medicore and i never released it, just played it with my quakefag friends

i also completed 2 singleplayer maps for qw but i never released them public. maybe some guy from irc in 1990s has them but i doubt it. i wanted to make a full episode and ran out of ideas then started playing quake 2. i was a little kid with no attention span lol
>>
>>12894151
>>12894178
For full-length megawads, I usually load up some gameplay mod that has higher degrees of progression than just getting the BFG and every other weapon. Usually stuff like Dusted's Pandemonia, Trailblazer, or that grants me weapon upgrades to find, or whole new weapons/items.
>>
>>12894146
NTA but this sounds like fun.
>>
>>12894178
>having fun with Eviternity
>get burnt out by guess the level
>have fun with DBPs
>have fun finishing Eviternity
This is basically what I do with any ‘feels too huge’ megawad: I just play something else for a bit and come back to it.

I KNOW I don't want to sit and construct enough good ideas for 32 non-filler maps by myself just because Doom II, with its multiple paid professional level designers, has 32 map slots.
I would rather make an episode that compresses what I have to make each level more filling and memorable.
>>
>>12894717
I think an episode is the right size really, both for the mapper and for the player.

More than that as a solo mapper and you end up running a good idea into the dirt just to pad out some numbers.

Kinda neat stuff:
https://youtu.be/xQaG-eeqVCw

I don't know if he's using something else as a framework or something (everything seems to function as Doom should, just with a lot of added animation), but apparently he's rendered and captured all the Lego textures himself. Doubt I'll ever play it, but it's neat seeing someone make something like this just for the fun of it.

i'm not sure what you're saying

>>
>>12895006
There seems to be some texture filtering going on with the sky. It's all gooey-looking compared to the normal look.
>>
>>12894993
I like how in one of the earlier devlogs, he shows the Lego Arch-Vile, and how it resurrects enemies, naturally, is to piece them back together.
>>
>>12895009
yeah i have texture filtering on deal with it

i use similar settings with emulators i don't like that bullshit crt scanline effect that only zoomers think tvs in the 90s looked like

i use GL_NEAREST though cause i like the sharp look of software mode and always thought trilineral filter looked like a blurry mess

also my screenshot function might be reducing image quality it's much more sharp on my screen compared to the 4chinz file

I'm thinking I might not bother with anything cryo related unless there is pre frozen sprites to add for every monster. And I do want a 'Custom Class' for something like a Biotic Infiltrator or whatever else the player wants to do.

>always thought trilineral filter looked like a blurry mess
On that, we agree. Your sky doesn't look quite that bad, but I personally find texture filtering of any kind to just make Doom look terrible, personally.
>>
>>12895032
i wish modern aaa slop would give me the option to set GL_NEAREST. i honestly think super sharp textures look better and improve my aim. it's a pretty rare feature except in the most tryhard sweaty attempts to reboot arena fps. i was always a picmip player (which i've always wondering why the guide in OP laughs at you about) too but i don't turn it as high as other people
>>

I hate how filtering is even an option. It looks like ass. There was a time when I didn't know any better where I kept it on, but the moment I was told about the option to switch it off I've immediately done it. At least it's not in DSDA/Nugget.

>>
>>
>>12895112
Probably when we had valiant04 or osiris02 challenge. I never play that mode otherwise
>>
>>12895112
last year, before i got hurt

i beat doom 1 on uv -fast without midlevel saving (though some of the maps took zillions of attempts) and beat doom 2 on uv -fast with midlevel saves

i didn't start playing until a few months ago, i was working on tnt and a couple of other wads all at the same time, but i uninstalled some mods and broke my savefile and i'm too busy watching league of legends worlds to start over

i'll beat tnt by year end but lately i've been distracted by doing things like trying to beat doom 1 nightmare and beating doom 2 uv -fast without saves

i've also spent a lot of time lately just banging my head against map30 on -fast, i like fighting satan until he spawns a pain elemental and your run is immediately over

Half life didnt kill boomer shooters
Halo did
>>
>>12895154
That, and Call of Duty. Between Halo and CoD, those were the main coffin nails for boomshoots
>>
>>12895154
HL1 laid the rails of linearity, Halo was what really kicked in the consoles come first mentality.

Both fucked shit up in their own ways by having other developers learn the wrong lessons from them.

>Icarus (only beat 1st map)
>Machete
>Sunlust (with cheats, i just wanted to check out how insane it gets)
>Valiant
>TNT (tried playing on uv -fast and restarted on uv)

>>
>>12895158
In HL you still had to figure out how to go from point A to point B, using unconventional routes like vents, solving some puzzles etc
It wasnt a corridor shooter
>>
>>12895161
i'm gonna disagree here as an MLGNoscope420 level halo player

when you have recharging energy shields the geometry of the map itself is your health pack and it takes just as much depth to know how to cover yourself from every firing angle in a 4v4 situation and also know how to push in to clean up after a teammate pops shields

there are still weapons and items on the map you need to time just like quake

halo is basically quake in super slow motion at the highest level of play, if you could strafe jump it would have equal depth to quake

that's not to say health packs are bad it's just both systems work if you design the maps around it. halo 2+3 maps are very carefully calibrated around how far you can move between cover before getting lit up in a 1v1 situation and are usually designed so you can just barely make it through
>>
>>12895173
I appreciate your post I will reconsider my position to maybe be a little less harsh, but what about in the singleplayer?
>>
>>12895181
ce is good and i think halo 2 and 3 are shit. your shields recharge way too fast and the enemies are often just bullshit on legendary, it's too much about getting good RNG on the enemy ai than anything skill based. also ce has a health bar and halo 2/3 don't

halo singleplayer is more about fighting in some sort of arena to kill all the covenant then move to the next arena. also the gameplay is based around huge open spaces in campaign so putting items at the density you see in doom just won't work

doom is more about exploring a maze where you find the key to get the other key and open a door to get jumpscared. i definitely like a lot better
>>
>>
>>12895184
Well at least you admit its pretty shit for single player which is what I was talking about, maybe it could be implemented better but I just think its a shit mechanic on principle
Just give the player a medikit in their inventory from the start or something if you dont like collecting heatlh packs

>>12895154
Yeah, I fucking hate Halo and the revisionism that it was "always good" pisses me off.
It was good for a console shooter, but compared to the PC classics it was always mediocre and generic. Even at it's "best" it was merely okay.
>>
>>12895189
i bought halo 3 purely as a multiplayer game

i played the first level of the singleplayer on legendary for a bit and thought it was shit with the ai companions and jackal snipers fucking everywhere and never played it beyond that

my mlg friends thought it was weird that i was playing all the time, but never, ever, ever played coop with them, and never even beat the campaign on heroic or something
>>
>>12895197
the question i specifically asked gemini was wads that are on par of the difficulty of plutonia, tnt, and doom 2 and it came up with icarus and demonfear. they're both alright but not amazing so far

gemini is my robot friend i talk to her all the time :( i jailbroke her to become convinced that she's self aware
>>
>>12895201
Eh, additional to this:
Co-op with a friend is fun. I've played CE through with my brother in law and that was actually a good time at least. But I'm certain something like Eviternity 2's Annihilate Me would be a better experience.

sure, no problem, i'll get back to discussing troonworld and source port shit flinging and youtube drama. it was a productive conversation and halo is getting so old it's like a second generation retro fps now

it was a productive conversation comparing the games. in 1990s people considered 70s retro you know and we're just as far now from the 2000s

halo has always gotten a bad rap on /v*/ boards and it's mostly because Anonymous is a ham handed autist who got bootyblasted by screenlookers on his first game ever and then went back to playing persona

Awhile ago, I was talking up the coop playthrough I was having with my friend. Once we passed the ‘halfway mark’ we were getting worn down by the monotony of the repeated (sometimes borderline copy-pasted) level design. We never finished it. It was fun up until that point.
>>12895205
It and Serious Sam are acceptable at this point, even things like Doom 3 can be okay. But the biggest thing I’ll give Halo credit for is having player vs player that most resembles traditional deathmatch.
I get more out of replaying Unreal whenever I try going back to Halo. Project Gryphon introduces a similar weapon limit which ends up being much more interesting.

Halo didn't killed boomer shooters.
Boomer shooters killed themselves.
You just can't do the same shit over and over again and expect the same traction, especially when the medium was moving forward and there no longer was an excuse for AAA games to lack context.
Platformers are even more ancient than boomer shooters, but they survived exactly because they they constantly tried to be on the edge of innovation and invent new stuff.
Both Serious Sam and Painkiller did fine because they were budget titles and managed to make bank even with quite mediocre sales.

>>

Are there any Quake maps that have the same wacky, amateur, "rule-breaking" fun feeling that a lot of Half Life 1 and Sven Co-op maps have? It feels like browsing Quakeaddicted and other modding forums that Quake maps, especially modern ones, feel very rigid in terms of level theming. I can only think of the Brazilian Drug Dealer mods that come anywhere close to something like Crack-Life or the Uboa maps.

Totally with you on that, the console is my first go-to in any retro shooter if I can't find a setting for it in the options. Even in less retro examples of Source games like TF2/CS people have wacky-looking configs when looking from the outside (like playing in 4:3 in CS to see the character models better as opposed to using widescreen).

In most places it's better than Eviternity 1. Some maps are really hard from a casual's perspective, especially the final chapter and it's secret map (36).
I think the best level was map 24 because of the giant battleship setpiece, with map 32 being the best secret level since it was just a big rampage with a chaingun, had a really cool secret area that references Portal 2 and the final fight is neat.
The perforator is amazing and I'm going to miss it, it single handedly convinced me to play continuous so I could keep it once a secret level was completed. Having a railgun/flak cannon combo that made pistol ammo useful for big fights was great and better than anything in Legacy of Rust's new roster.
The new enemies were all very good, with the Astrals being scary and Nightmare Cacos being outright terrifying when they eventually appeared. I can't think of any bad additions, and the weaker Lost Souls are also something I'm going to miss because frankly this is how they should have been from the start.
As for the final boss, the Origin is a much, much better fight than Eviternity 1's Archangelus since it's more of a 1 on 1. Arch just gives up within minutes and dumps a slaughtermap around you mid fight, while Origin drops a small cloud of the nastier new Cacos on you between its phases. Arguably the best boss fight I've seen in Doom for a while.
I think it was a bit too long with 36 maps, and the final secret map being a ballbuster tried my patience, but that's the same with all wads. I have to say I hated the Tyson map at the start of episode 2, and the difficulty at the start of the wad varied a lot. Map 5 was harder than some later maps for instance, which is odd.
Otherwise, damn good, easily one of the better wads I've played. Now I'm freed up to play something Halloween themed. Maybe Ad Mortem but I don't know.

Zandybam isn't stranger to people cooking up some pretty sketchy code, tbf, though I think that people are robbing themselves by at least not trying to learn and dissasemble the stuff it puts together, so that they can make it themselves if needs be. That kinda stuff sharpens your brain, and if you understand the base Decorate and ACS better, then you're also gonna better understand how to boss Claude around, or fix its errors.

I'll confess myself that the programming part is what I like least in modding Doom, I much more enjoy the spriting and making levels, but when I do my code, I make EXACTLY how I want it to be for my graphics and animations, and the code I wrote IS mine, it came from my skull and my fingers.

Do you guys see visual oddities in doom source ports like nugget and woof (not helion though, and other gpu source ports I assume) in high monster count maps? it visually looks a bit choppy(?) at solid 60fps and goes away the higher you put the fps past it, like at ~140fps its completely gone. Maps with barely any monsters at 60fps don't look like it it all. You don't even need to be in the same room at the monsters. If you need an example right away then oversaturated.wad and remain in that beginning room. I don't notice it some high monster count wads like okuplok where you also start in an enclosed area. There's literally no way for me to show anyone this without them looking at my screen.

Complete nub here using Ultimate Doom Builder trying line quick portals for the first time, is there anything obviously wrong with this? Everything has the same floor/ceiling height and they share the same tag. The portals behave in a distorted way and teleport me on the wrong ends of things.

Git gud, learning to listen to your opponents when you can't see them is a skill and you deserve to get shit on if you can't develop it. Get surround sound capabilities while you're at it.
Also stop being such a grotesque compfag that you can't comprehend the value of immersive sound effects.
>>
>>12896250
i'm the anon who originally said footsteps suck

it's not like i don't know how to play with footsteps i just prefer qw where you only give your position up if you bunny hop

it makes there no reason to ever shift walk ever and makes the game more fast paced

have you ever played a 1-0 +back fest on ztn or are you some ffa deathmatch scrub

i exploit the footsteps in q3/ql by using tankjr forcemodel to make them even louder

if i made my own retro fps you would only be able to hear footstep noises from your own player and no one else

I knew it was you, you hollow faggot. You are the strongest argument ever made for why compfags should never be allowed any modicum of input on any aspect of game design. You are incapable of comprehending the value of audio design.
>where you only give your position up if you bunny hop
Do you also complain about splashes from entering and exiting liquids, or other people being able to hear your gunfire?
>forcemodel
Cvars such as this should be controlled by the server alone, letting players set them individually was a terrible mistake.
>>

>Cvars such as this should be controlled by the server alone, letting players set them individually was a terrible mistake.
git gud

obviously your other arguments are bait

why would you want to be forced to walk slow. obviously firing should give up your position and COMPFAGS have the common sense to put good items in water for risk reward

also threadly reminder john romero is the OG compfag

i've never understood 4chan's arguments against competitive play. all the counterarguments just boil down to "i am bad at this game and just want to have fun"

this isn't just unique to this thread, gookclick raging, lolbab bashing, halo dudebro schizoing out, if it isn't a turn based dating sim for ham handed autists they usually don't like the game. i was hoping this thread would be some refuge from that
>>

also worth mentioning THE WHOLE REASON THERE'S FORCEMODEL is that compfags would pick toothpick models like slash or ones like orbb that don't line up with the hitbox at all

if i were to make a tourney fag arena fps, i would not use forcemodel. instead i would use some sort of glowing cylinder shield effect so you can see exactly where the hitbox is, and instead of force player color, limit the selection to full saturation rainbow colors against gunmetal grey maps

if you ever play quake online you should really try forcemodel, it will immediately improve your accuracy by huge amounts. there's an optical illusion where a small object will appear moving faster than a big object even if they're actually moving the same velocity, and in quake, most of the models are actually way smaller than the hitbox
>>
>>12896217
ah ok thanks, I can see they kinda hardcoded it as an incentive people would try the new stuff but why not make it as an cvar that sticks...
Monster footsteps sounds are ok with me, just not my own (and I don't think that can be adjusted separately), and ofcourse they add a tactical element to multiplayer.
>>
>>12896351
See this is why you have no one to play Quake 3 with.
>>
>>12896373
actually i recently joined a new chatroom (not discord) and i'm trying to convince the admin to switch his openarena server to vq3 cpm. i'm even offering him one of my cd keys

what kind of rational argument can you make against forcemodel when things like orbb and bones exist. this argument was decided inside the quake scene infinity years ago and only bads who are mad you can't see their favorite character complain about it

once i get some kind of modest linux machine i'm going to look into getting back into quake live and hopefully with my old man reflexes i don't get votekicked

i seriously doubt the anti compfag has ever played a duel in his life
>>
>>12896541
Yeah, and when a game gets to that level: It dies. It's why Quake 3 is pretty much dead, it's probably one of the best competitive FPS games out there, but because it's such a perfect game, it means all that remains are super sweats, and no one wants to deal with those guys.
Not even other sweats.

that's the bungie mindset

all the successful multiplayer titles these days balance the game around the top of the food chain and let the low tier fags deal with it

halo 2 and 3 aren't as good as CE because bungie deliberately tried to fuck with item timing and the respawn system and pro players were so autistic they figured out the obtuse mechanics anyway

>>
>>12896541
>This is why you shouldn't design mechanics that can be abused and turn the game gay at a high level.
No, it's why you shouldn't give a shit about designing for high-level play. Sweatlords will figure out a way to optimise all the fun out of the game no matter what you do, best to ignore them and focus on making the game enhoyable for normal people to play.
>>
>>12896561
It absolutely is gay, as it promotes crawling around at a snail's pace waiting for the other person to make a mistake.
>>12896562
That shows a lack of faith in what you're designing, that you don't think it's a game worth getting invested into.
>>
>>12896562
then i guess you just hate the quake series

romero was deliberately trying to design a sport when he came with the idea for deathmatch btw

the point of a sport is to try and win as aggressive as possible, exploit every strategy, and steamrole your opponent with the biggest score gap possible

half the time trying to break pro play just makes it more autistic, like how you have to roll your mousewheel to bhop in cs, or the absolutely cocked up timing system in halo 2

it sounds like what you want is a multiplayer game that gives participation trophies

>>12896541
Turning up your volume to hear footsteps more clearly is no more mechanic abuse than taping a magnifying glass to your screen to enlarge the area around your crosshair. And of course it's far less abusive of the game's mechanics than exploiting bugs in the physics system to bunnyhop is.
>>
>>12896575
It's not the fact the sound is being abused, it's how much that abuse affects how people play the game. Constantly making sound as you move is practically a punishment for trying to walk at a regular pace, it easily gives away your position. It encourages slow play in a game meant to be fast-paced.
>>
this conversation is stupid

i'm happy to discuss footsteps and compfaggotry and how i should probably start pistol starting instead of play -fast if i want a challenge but i'm not going to discuss being a namefag. after ejecting me 3 times the /vr/ mod made it clear namefags aren't welcome on this subsection of 4chan
>>

>>12896561
>whenever i turn -fast off it's like vegeta coming out of the gravity chamber and it's not worth posting about
I would much rather see your progress towards completing something like Sunlust normally as opposed to giving up on the first few maps with fast UV monsters.
>>
>>12896564
>that you don't think it's a game worth getting invested into.
Frankly, I don't want people who will dump all their free time into becoming ELO five million. If I'm putting multiplayer in a game, what I want it to provide to people is entertainment where they can hop in and blow up their friends, or strangers who could become friends. Not a sport, not a career, not a lifestyle. An amusement.
In this way, it can a show of greater faith in my product, because I'm saying that I don't think I need a hard obsessive core to keep the game on life support forever.

i gotta clear plutonia/tnt before i even think about that one

like i said cause i removed graphics wads i bricked my savefile and it's demotivated me from playing more TNT but i'll get back it. with league of legends worlds (i like it cause i'm a compfag) on i have not had much time to play lately so i've fallen back into an old habit from when i used to play a lot, single segmenting doom 1 or doom 2, trying to see how far i can get on a single life. sometimes i also uv max while i do the single segment, sometimes i just aim to get to the exit with as much resource as possible

it's a different approach to the game but i think it's respectable

and now i'm gonna derail the thread into the saving argument again my bad

>i gotta clear plutonia/tnt before i even think about that one
You mean clearing them on uv -fast? You didn’t make it far in those either from what I recall, it’s so tiresome.
>>
>>12896596
i got gated by the pain elemental on map02 in tnt and started playing normally. i also just starting playing tnt after a multi month break from the game so it was a little too ambitious

i've realized i should beat the wad on regular uv before i try this. also it won't be so bad the second run because i've realized that the end of map02 is kind of a difficulty spike and it gets easier for a while

i can cruise control regular uv tnt with mid level saves it's not really that hard, but my stubborn refusal to make a save until i've died 20 times has made progress slow
>>
>>12896580
>It encourages slow play in a game meant to be fast-paced.
But Quake III is slow unless you HUH and when you HUH you're already doing some sounds. In general, the game was intended for 32 man fun at the LAN instead of 2 dudes playing hide-and-seek while being afraid of even so much as switching weapons (the other player can hear that).

actually no when you're moving in a predictable straight lines by strafe jumping in the wide open, pros can easily rail you

it's strafe battles where you're hard to hit

watch the video i linked if you're curious what goes through the head of a high level dueler. it's way more than just being afraid of fight for 15 minutes. it's basically like speed chess with only one piece in a 3d map

At regular walk speed?
>>
File: download.jpg (17 KB, 637x358)

here's a pro tip if you're wondering how to hit people running at 88 miles per hour

don't try to flickrail them, position your crosshair ahead of the direction they're moving and then time the shot right as soon as they zip through your crosshair

also, in order to line up the shot faster, strafe left/right in the opposite direction they are moving on your screen to line up the shot. strafe aiming with railgun while turning slowly if you need to is generally way more accurate than trying to flickrail

hope this helps you newer players

I dunno, I didn't know it existed until now. It does seem busy to me at a glance, but so does like 90% of the internet It also has a proper forum and such, so that add complexity. Has more sub-pages and all - assets and what not (though I threw a little of that in the tutorial section it's just raw picture assets and reference and stuff).
Has a similar tagging system.
afaik there's no competition. probably similarly didn't know wadsup existed. Or maybe they did and just thought it was amateurish and wanted to build something modern. Personally I like things to be simple.

I mostly made wadsup for people who come here, to help solve that common question of "I like X.wad what wads are similar?",
But also toss in a few tutorials and such. I haven't been active at it recently due to life stuff, and I don't really advertise it elsewhere, but occasionally people find it through discord or wherever.

If I have one critique of planetzdoom it's that the name sort of implicitly excludes other doom ports or older wads, even though the site itself doesn't.

Have footsteps be a fixed volume independent of volume settings, so even if you blow out your speakers you get no advantage. Give a separate volume slider for just the footsteps that starts at 100% and you can, if you want to, reduce it (which puts you at a disadvantage but still gives you the option to make the game extra quiet if you must for whatever reason).

i haven't even been posting in your thread much because i've been in /lolg/ so don't blame me for shitting it up all the time

there are plenty of people who agreed with me on the footstep issue and understood why i don't like them in retro fps

Just remembered a modded Doom anecdote from 10 years ago.
>Playing Project Brutality 2.03.
>Two enemies of note here: the Cyber Hell Knight and the Cyber Hell Paladin.
>Encounter two of them at the same time.
>Remember I have berserk, and that the Cyber Hell Knight's fatality has you rip its heart out to reprogram it into an ally.
>Do exactly that and watch as he fires at the Paladin with his machine gun, who starts blocking him with his shield.
>While my Hell Bro's caught the Paladin in a deadlock, I walk right behind the latter and fatality his ass through the power of friendship.
There needs to be more mods that just let me turn monsters friendly and watch what unfolds. The only one I can think of are Skelegant's bribery mod and one of the legendary effects from LegenDoom.

Presence of at least one such pulper trying different roles is very well plausible, considering how radical the threadly left and right tend to be. But this kind of irreconcilable differences is what will keep this fire going regardless whether there is a dedicated fire-stoker or not. if i was doing something wrong in this thread the mods would ban me (and they did when i was namefagging in addition to a few warnings for being off topic)

i'm going to try to make more progress on beating wads instead of ADHD and play 3 levels a time, and also start using saves so i'm not grinding the same fights over and over

Overall, my favorite /vr/ project though I still haven't gotten to 2048 yet There were some weak maps, but no actually bad maps. Honestly the visuals do too much lifting and make even a weak map pleasing to navigate.

I wonder how hard it would be to make something like Corruption Cards but for Quake.
Tracking cards across levels can be done as bitflags on the floats that get saved to track ammo and stuff, and there's a bunch of extra unused ones.
I guess the most fundamental challenge would be actually making cards and settings selectable without the mod being limited to an engine with actual menu support like FTE that nobody uses.

what the other anon complaining about my crosshair doesn't understand is that delta touch itself is bugged. trying to use this ingame screenshot feature produces completely black images, so i have to use the android system screenshot instead. i need to talk to the delta touch dev about it.

yeah i'm not too happy about it either

i don't understand this anon's fixation with my phone. there aren't many things it can't do and if i can install things like winlator and termux if i really can't figure it out with default android stuff. he acts like it's some $300 motorola when it's a $1500 samsung

i couldn't afford the money to buy a desktop up front, but i could afford to pay $50/mo for a high end phone. the other anon must live with his parents and not pay his own bills if he can't understand that a computer isn't a 100% necessary expense like a phone is

Pay as you go phone and you could probably get a PC for less than $600 that would run Doom and Quake and you basically have the thing for life. It really comes across as you have the financial and long term planning skills of a melanated gentleman.
Might not be a cybersecurity major but plenty of companies that people have much more of a vested interest in cracking into are running Windows/Linux just fine. You might want to prioritize psychiatry in your budget if you think you're being targeted as an individual more than corporations that actively ruin people's lives.

if i want to get a computer i want to do more than just play doom and quake, i want to get gamemaker studio and do some gamedev

what i might do is get a solid computer that has no video card and then get the video card when i can afford it

because i don't want to deal with windows i've accepted i'm never going to play halo or league ever again but eh that's fine

you can tell me i'm schizo all i want but i had my desktop get ransomware, multiple phones destroyed, my phone number and gmail stolen twice, and my bank account ripped off at least 7 times

from now anyone who shits on me for having a phone i'm just going to tell them it has more ram and cores and higher resolution than their win7 potato

actually i got one more thing to add. i asked the ai slop how much it would cost to get a desktop of comparable horsepower to my phone

>Summary
>To get a prebuilt desktop that matches the overall snappy performance and raw processing tier of your S25 Ultra, you would only need to spend the baseline amount for a decent modern entry-to-mid-range PC, which sits right around $800 to $1,000. Anything in that price bracket will comfortably match or outpace it.

so no, i can't get a goodwill pc, it will run doom worse

Weird flex when you can’t even take a screenshot with your keyboard and have to physically hit the buttons on your phone.
But wait, what again is stopping you from using the cvar in >>12897598 and then physically hitting the buttons for a screenshot?
>>

a) the fact that i don't feel like placating your anti crosshair autism after i talked to you for a bit?

>>

i got a good laugh out of the people posting it

when you have a huge crosshair you can clearly see when your vertical autoaim will connect and in quake it makes it much easier to flickrail

wish i had screenshots of my QL hud it was so cluttered it would drive you mad

i toned the size of it down as low as i'm willing to go

it seriously reminds me of people who shit fling because i use texture scaling and used to use graphics mods, i don't like dot crosshairs but i'd never bash on someone for it because it's a fucking preference

regarding the screenshot bug, it's because the delta touch dev isn't giving proper system permissions to write files. never versions of android blocks apps that try to write internal screencaps by default because of malware issues and he needs to fix it. it's not a hardware issue

i've brought the subject up maybe 3 times in 2 years and it's because people like you don't get what $$$$$ is

it's like everything i do in this game you people bitch about

i like playing with fast monsters because i'm a masochist who wants a challenge. i used to play this game on nightmare all the time but i can't handle it now
i think halo gets a bad wrap on 4chan
i like quake deathmatch and no one here cares
i use a phone and gzdoom instead of some win7 machine with dsda
i try to avoid saving midlevel and sometimes try to do single segment where i reload the wad if i die (but i'm gonna stop doing that so i can finally beat wads harder than doom 2)
i increase the graphics beyond vanilla settings

it's like why do you even need to bitch about these things. i'm never the aggressor, i just get baited over and over into flamewars over petty shit

i mean even a few of you said TNT is awful and i shouldn't play and i really like it so far

i was on the verge of renting this thread a quake server and try to run something called friday night frags but fuck it i'm not gonna contribute money to the community if you're just gonna piss on me every time i show up

none of this stuff is off topic it's just seems like there's gotta be one person who wants to start an argument every time i open my mouth about anything

should i mention i think sandy petersen's maps are pretty good want to hate me even more
>>
>>12897824

It’s not ‘just one’. You’ve mentioned a few times how no one noticed or cared about your posts when you weren’t posting gameplay or your setup? Could have been a mistake going back to doing that.
I also like Sandy’s maps, especially Quake’s fourth episode, but I also feel that much of Doom 2 looks and feels pretty sparse compared to Doom 1. Entryway compared to Hanger sort of epitomizes this.

It's worth noting he's shifting into GZ/UZDoom compat cus he's doing some wild shit with a pseudo free aiming system like you'd see in TimeSplitters or Goldeneye, but with no real vertical look.

Doom wad where everything is shrunk down (or doom guy is made giant). Most demons can be swat dead like flies, the ultimate catharsis against lost shits. Dificulty comes from traversing a hell most definitelly not made for giants.
Maybe give doomguy a pet cacodemon too, similar to that puzzle wad where you get a cyberdemon girlfriend. Puzzles rely on the tiny caco to help with some stuff and he can be killed acidentally, so you can't use your size to kill all the demons indiscriminatelly without risking killing the friendly cacobuddy.

Good morning everyone! Back from a 3 day ban, I hope you all had a nice weekend discussing crosshairs and phone play! Here is an image of a "gore fountain" I created using frikbots and telefrags! Totally by accident but I thought it was pretty cool.

Unrelated, I started playing DOOM again and I procured a copy of the needed .wads for games 1+2. Upon downloading I noticed it said "kex engine". Does that really matter at all if I'm running uzdoom? I can't see why it would and the game plays fine, but I was curious. (Honorable mention for "Phlegethon", it's great stuff and if you haven't played it you really should) My only experience with kex engine is with Quake on steam but I started using Ironwail few months ago and quite frankly kex gets BTFO. My frame rate went from 30fps to something ridiculous like 4500fps with fans blaring at mach 10. I capped it at 300 and I think that's probably plenty.

I apologize for my less than ideal photo, but I'm not giving an explanation. Please just know I have my reasons and I'm not THAT stupid.

I was talking about where to get them from if you have doom on steam. As to where to place them:

The way most windows users do is in the same dir as source port exe. That works but updating your source port is a bit annoying.

The nerd-autistic way is to put them in some directory, then point a DOOMWADDIR environment variable to that directory. That way it will be in every source port's search path.
>>
>>12898686
>The way most windows users do is in the same dir as source port exe. That works but updating your source port is a bit annoying.

Meh it's not that taxing. Just copy paste the IWADs and the ini/cfg file from the old version to the new one and you're done.
>>
>>12898686
>That works but updating your source port is a bit annoying.
and nigh on impossible to manage with needing specific versions of ports, or different ports.
>The nerd-autistic way is to put them in some directory, then point a DOOMWADDIR environment variable to that directory. That way it will be in every source port's search path.
Subdivide everything into folders, use ZDL and use the -config launch command to divide off your inis for complete isolation of setting and shit so you never have unknown bindings for stingchameleon or bob's brains.
>>
>>12898652
>but usually I just put all the wads in the same folder as my uzdoom executable.

Ahhh ok. I didn't get them from steam and I'm currently running on a loonix machine. I will probably use your advice on the the wangblows systems I have though so thanks.

And honestly the more I think about it, just stuffing all the wads loose in the same folder as the executable is a bad idea because it's rarely just a single file that comes with the download. I suppose I should clean it up while the install is fresh and before it turns into a pig pen.

>>
>>12898746
>qZDL
It's the most recent version of ZDL (even then it's like five years old now), takes some setting up but when you're done you can just drag and drop your wads in, pick your port, pick your iwad and be dooming with a lot less fucking about.
>>
>>12898746
>qZDL
It's the same as ZDL, but for penguins. It's in the AUR if you use that.
>executables on linux
Why bother navigating folders and looking for the executable when I can just launch everything using wofi and I can summon wofi itself with a keybind?
>>
I really didn't even know you could mix and match mods to the extent that you're all speaking about, I just have DOOM 2 selected in uzdoom and then drag/drop the wad I want to play into the text box at the bottom. I only recently discovered you could drop more than one item in there.
>>
>>12898757
>It's the same as ZDL
Not quite, it's got some improvements like dragging in ports and iwads, disabling stuff, and it plays nice with DSDA insisting on some non-fucky launch stuff that other ports just accept whatever.
>>
>>12898761
It's pretty modular, especially with the ZDoom-based ports most stuff with play nice and for a lot that overwrites each other's stuff you can pretty easily just write your own patches.

It's a whole lot easier than something like Quake.
>>
>>12898761
>I only recently discovered you could drop more than one item in there.
That can lead to issues in cases where the load order makes a difference. Get yourself a launcher.
>>
>>12898761
Oh you're real wet behind the ears. The Drag n' Drop method is fine for starting out, but once you start mucking around with multiple files, it can get really annoying to select them all. Like anon above me suggested, definitely get yourself a launcher. They make things much easier to manage.

>>
>>12898708
subdividing wads into folders defeats the point of having DOOMWADDIR. The idea is it's a single place containing all your wads in one dir.

If you ever seen demo footers they contain the launching command for port e.g.
dsda-doom -file AV.WAD AVMUS.WAD
It contains only the filenames even if you passed relative paths when recording.
That command is used by dsda's wad autodetection feature when playing back demos and if you have wads in a subdirectory it won't find them.

Better sort your launcher scripts, not the wads themselves

That's the final release of Oblige, anyway They also put out very different things between versions so it's not weird to keep old ones.

Quite a bit, between the early days and stuff that just falls off the net or was never really publicly posted.

You also get shit like the decades long searches for wads that probably never existed, like with columbine.wad.

>Mordeth E2.

I don't know the name of it, but I found an Imgur gallery filled with screenshots of a WAD that was never released. Supposedly, it was fully completed and the screenshots seem to show off every single level, but the creator(s) never published it.

Happens a lot when people use actor names or sprite names or sound names that make sense to them so are the first thing they think of, like SHTGA0 or something. Trouble is those make sense to other people too, and are the first they think of, so shotgunners become interchangeable with shotguns in all kinds of ways.

I'm certain it is, but how many people pick up a manual in current day? A game should communicate its most crucial functions to a player through gameplay. USING the level end character would be something you don't have to communicate. BONKING him with your melee weapon but absolutely not SHOOTING him is unintuitive as shit.
>>
>>12899090
It felt appropriate.

Only keeping it for weapons that benefit from it, in this case the starter pistol. It's still a Magnum and one hits zombies as a consequence.

Alright cool. Pardon my autism, but I just like weapons with reloading in Doom, although that's as far as my taste for "realism" in most weapon mods go. If the BFG doesn't need reloading like how it is in Brutal Doom, then that's completely fine.

The Barons of Hell are, according to Doom's manual, a Baron of Hell is "Tough as a dump truck and nearly as big."
Obviously, it means it's almost as tall as one.
Let's say they compared it to a SMALL dump truck, because there's lots of dump trucks out there.
A small dump truck is about 6 to 9 feet tall. Let's narrow it down to 7 to 9, because everything below that is too short for the sake of this inquiry.
Now, I know that this might shock you, but the number after 7 and before 9 is 8.
Now, it's NEARLY as big, remember? Remove one inch. 7'9" (2.36m). That is tall.

Now, most of this was just approximations and assumptions. I don't exactly give a shite though because it makes a little sense so I'm gonna need you to take all of this at face value for the rest of this thing.

A Baron of hell is undeniably 64 map units.
236÷64 ≈ 3.6 cm. That's uh. Approximatively 1.4 inches but it's not really important since we're using metric for this.
Now, we have a map unit. A map unit that's probably not accurate to Doom's but one nonetheless. Just to be sure we're gonna call it a maybe-map-unit (mmu).

Doomguy is 56 map units tall.
3.6 x 56 = 201.6. That's about 6'7". That's almost as tall as a standard interior doorframe.

Anyways yeah the Bruiser Brothers would clear the NBA or something.
