What JRPG has the best party overall?
I'm not talking individual characters, like FF9 has Vivi who's fucking great, I'm talking which one has the best overall cast where all of them feel great.

Trails FC. The fact that they come and go as the story progresses means you never have a massive roster until the very end of the game, so it never becomes cluttered and all the characters get an appropriate amount of attention.

Final Fantasy XIII. Every character has a good story with appropriate motivations, and unique gameplay differences that nonetheless don't force you to use one if you don't want to.
I wish Cid could have joined as a secret party member.

Gameplay-wise FF6

ME2 is up there with the best party selection in any vidya, but hardly a JRPG or an RPG for that matter.

Xenoblade 1. In 1, Sharla is a bit of a weak link but oh well. I'd have included 3 but in retrospect, eh, I like about half of the main party.

Maybe it's too obvious to post, but most of the games widely considered top RPGs have great parties on top of everything else good about them.

Chrono Trigger is an obvious choice, every character is great. Final Fantasy VI has a big cast and the attention is split more, but all the party members are cool and their stories are well done (characters like Umaro and Gogo are secret and don't need more). Final Fantasy VII has one of the best parties too, even Yuffie and Vincent have a lot going for them despite being optional. There's no party member in those game that I don't like.
>>
>>3819270
Saiyuki: Journey West.

You get a dragon girl SE Asian teen slut, a butterfly model chick, two lolis, a scorpion ginger milf. Unfortunately the entire party isn't female.

Tales of Vesperia maybe. Honestly a lot of Tales games would be in with a good shout, the skits system goes a long way towards endearing the characters to the player.

FC's a good shout, and that core cast + Kevin remain charming in the two sequels as well.

I was about to ask... was this some female-only version of Saiyuki? lol assuming it's based off of the manga with the same title.

"Great characters" eh. Everyone just handwaves it away when they could have at least had a skit where a member calls it out but nope. It's an old internet fight but still applies. Stand it up against the FC series that actually digs in as a comparison
>>
They might fall into typical tropes tropes but you're never tired of them, its always a treat to see everyone's interactions and stories. Except Miranda, i hope she dies as she lived, crying like a bitch.
>>
Xenosaga sub series for me
>>
>>3830921
Shion slowly becomes and pretty awful person by the end of the third game though. After everything the cast goes through the stuff with Kevin was crazy. And the way she treated Allen only to end up holding hands right after... If they were going for the message that she still was far away from healing from her trauma then slam frickin dunk I guess because that was rough
>>

Lulu and Kimahri are both pretty bad

She has nothing whatsoever to recommend her. She can't heal like Kloe, she can't hit like Zin or Joshua, and she can't magic-nuke like Olivier. You already have one unspecialized character forced into your party, no sense clogging up the roster with another.

Schera is the only character in the game who can accelerate your party's turns and grant you three consecutive attacks in a row. In certain situations, that's much more valuable than a single healer or attacker.

The only reason I'm giving (you) this response is because of how hilarious it is that decades later Vesperia fans still seethe when people point out they have no critical thinking to not pick up on the bad writing

>>3831202
Okay but why is this. Goody and Donald were practically just cardboard cutouts 80% of the time and somehow I only have fond memories and good feelings when I see this image. The fact that they truly nailed this team with a less is more approach is amazing in retrospect

Frankly, it's a low-hanging fruit, since it's easier to write 3 characters than 6-8. Regardless, they are the best main party I've seen.

Had to scroll down WAY too far for Chrono Trigger.

CT is literally #1 objectively correct answer, and it's not even close.
>>3820004
I like it. RNG status is questionable, but the party is so great I'll allow it this time. Pre-EAbuyout Bioware's biggest strength was memorable companions (not you Carth, sit back down), and possibly its only strength. Pre-EA Bioware games are just janky slop without the companions.

holy fucking shit, no. The only good characters are Olivier and Scherezard, and they fucking completely vanish from your party for most of the game.
>>
>>3825275
I love Chrono Trigger, but the characters are mostly stylish cardboard cutouts that exist to have some tie to their respective time period. They are certainly visually and conceptually interesting, but as actual characters, they're not up to much.

Fucking this. FFV's heroes are a masterclass in 16-bit character development. Even Gilgamesh is jealous of how cool they are, just for beating him up all the time.
>>
I think if you're talking about the whole party being endearing and ending up feeling like family, I'd have to say Like a dragon, chrono trigger and tales of arise
>>
>>3819270
For some reason I want to say Eternal Sonata. I'm wrong and it's probably just nostalgia, but that's the answer I want to say. It's a pretty big party too, 10 guys + 2 extra DLC ones.
>>
>>3835157
>They are certainly visually and conceptually interesting, but as actual characters, they're not up to much.
this, desu. I like the cast of trigger, but most of them don't fucking do anything or have any kind of arc or development beyond face value. There also isn't much interaction between them at all, especially once you can switch party members freely. The finale tries to play up the emotion of all these friends being forced to say goodbye to each other, but the only two that have any sort of believable relationship are Lucca and Robo. And even that only boils down to two scenes where she has to fix him because she's the only person with a screwdriver.

But I suppose I shouldn't be expecting objective analysis of the JRPG that is primarily praised by people who don't play JRPGs.
>>
>>3819270
>I'm talking which one has the best overall cast where all of them feel great.
FF5. Almost every scene in that game has some subtle or not-so-subtle moment of the heroes bonding or showing compassion toward one another. It's kind of the point of the whole game.

I also get the feeling that the intended "true" ending is the one where only Krile escapes the void. It just makes for the better, more dramatic end to her arc of loneliness.
>>
>>3835157
>>3835324
OP just asked which parties have "the best overall cast where all of them feel great." Deep or not, the cast in Chrono Trigger feels great. They're all memorable and fit the game perfectly.
>>
>>3835157
>I love Chrono Trigger, but the characters are mostly stylish cardboard cutouts that exist to have some tie to their respective time period
I doubt you can love a game and still have such a superficial view on it. Unless you have small brain.
>>
>>3835324
>most of them don't fucking do anything or have any kind of arc or development beyond face value.
I don't think they needed more than they got honestly. Frog and Magus got the most, but all of them get some sort of satisfying short arc or development. Except for Crono for obvious reasons, and I guess Ayla doesn't get all that much besides taking down the Reptites and some stuff with Kino.
>>
>>3835348
>Ayla doesn't get all that much
IMO it's better that she doesn't have a tragic origin story, she just is a female chad. The others had enough touching moments.

Blame the game for being superficial, not me. I'm just judging it for what it is, instead of injecting meaning that isn't there just because I have an obsessive attachment to a 30 year old game I played as a kid.

They all get "something", but calling any of it "development" is a stretch.
