Most cost health or need spell components to cast. The quirk of the system is that instead of telling you which spells are available in a given situation you're given a jumble of letters and need to figure out which spell names you can write out using them. It's alright. It fits the unique, weird setting.I'd definitely give the games a chance, they are some of my favorites.

I really wonder what kind of major malfunction one must have to unironically enjoy the "classic" gamebooks. I could maybe understand Cave of Time and the like with actual branching as a somewhat fun way to spend an evening, even if a single run lasts like 5 pages or so. Gamebooks though? By and large, you trade any meaningful freedom in exchange for a railroad packaged with some primitive mimicry of tabletop mechanics that author wants you to suffer through to get "rewarded" with getting to stay on rails of the world's blandest book as opposed to crashing because lmao you didn't buy that item at start, bet you feel mad now, huh? Then they somehow manage to turn the concept even shittier with that weird obsession with difficulty that made authors fill their shoddy books with pitfalls and trap options and overtuned encounters that end up mathematically impossible even with maxed out stats because the faggot didn't bother to actually playtest what he's churned out.
>>3826959The Glorantha games are good and you won't convince me otherwise.
Recently discovered that Tunnels & Trolls (essentially D&D's first clone) has a whole line of solo gamebooks that use the core mechanics. They are interesting, and much more... Pulp, in the sense that you can clearly see that the writers were influenced far more by Conan and those horny low-budget S&S movies than by fantasy door-stoppers. Despite being pretty short, some also have a fair amount of variety in the scenarios and don't tend to be as sadistic in regards to difficulty as too many of their contemporaries. Worth an evening, I would say.

>>3827496>Their lore is aggressively bad, what's with that?White people are bad.

>>3827513I suppose you are right, they should just call themselves Calligians or something similar, to claim the prestige of the whole continent, not dissimilar to how Germans who larped as Romans or Russians who larped as Byzantine. I was more focused on it being a caricature played straight rather than on how logical it is in the setting.>>3827515Not quite. >The most common theory about the origins of Russians is the Germanic version. The name Rus', like the Proto-Finnic name for Sweden (*roocci),[2] supposed to be descended from an Old Norse term for "the men who row" (rods-) as rowing was the main method of navigating the rivers of Eastern Europe, and that it could be linked to the Swedish coastal area of Roslagen or Roden, as it was known in earlier times. There are plenty of Ruthenian lands, like Kievan, Red, Black or White (Belarus). The word Russia doesn't originate from any river but all these provinces instead.
>>3827506Nta, Wang basically only writes about the Antari without any real flair or substance, since he only knows a bunch of elementary trivia about the PLC and Western Slavs in general. A more accurate comparison would be if Nicky wrote about some generic Chinaman cooking a dog in mercury, but without the autistic Taoist mumbo-jumbo explaining why he did it.
>>3827513There are a shit ton of countries that are literally named after a dude. Georgia for example.
>>3827519>>The most common theory about the origins of Russians is the Germanic version. The name Rus', like the Proto-Finnic name for Sweden (*roocci),[2] supposed to be descended from an Old Norse term for "the men who row" (rods-) as rowing was the main method of navigating the rivers of Eastern Europe, and that it could be linked to the Swedish coastal area of Roslagen or Roden, as it was known in earlier times.I sure wonder what these "men who row" were doing. *Clueless* Most famously, along the Baltic coast and in Slavic lands, they were known for raiding and piracy. >There are plenty of Ruthenian lands, like Kievan, Red, Black or White (Belarus). The word Russia doesn't originate from any river but all these provinces instead. So all these lands in fact were indeed named after a word for a pirate raider. And therefore, the word Russian/Russia is also descended from that. Not to mention, names of Chinese dynasties and states were usually just names of some fuck who kicked out a previous dynasty, just like founder of Ming, Hongwu, was a penniless buddhist monk. There is much you can critique about Antari, but the origin of their name is not one of those. That is actually something that makes sense.
>>3827522That's their exonym derived from what the Persian name their land, Gurgan (land of the wolves). They call their own country Sakartvelo which are named after ancient tribe that used to rule there and likely just mean human in their ancient language.
>>3827520I remember him repeatedly comparing Antar to Russia before Lords released. Then he started comparing elves to all the empires he doesn't like: Russia, US, Japan, the like.
>>3827525Austria means eastern realm. Chinese call China the Middle Kingdom. Bosnia comes from the river Bosna.
>>3827524>So all these lands in fact were indeed named after a word for a pirate raider. At the start, yes. At least according to this theory, but you miss the context.>Varangians establish their proto-countries>Time passes, the word is being incorporated into Latin, the scholarly language of Europe>Proto-countries start to differentiate between one another, adding extra prefixes>The meaning of the old world is being forgotten>Russia arises, decides to take Ruthenian lands, getting rid of the prefixes, forging a claim to be the legal overlord of every RusThere is no reason for the Antari not to claim the old name of Calligia instead. As I said, even Germans did that.
>>3827530>Austria means eastern realmIt actually means Eastern March. Because it was a vanguard of the Frankish Empire against Avars. The Rome was also calling itself "The Bellybutton of the World".>>3827531Except you are wrong again. Because the name Rus was tied to Kievan Rus which at the height of glory did control of these lands. And it was reason why Musocvite Rus, was claiming the title of Overlordship of All Rus.So you just still keep proving that the Antari naming convention is correct.
>>3827534>Except you are wrong again. No u. Rus originates from word Ruthenia, and I already counted Kievan, Red, Black and White before. There are probably more, just no one cares or remembers them because Russia laid claim to them all.
>>3827475Imagine how much time got spent on this that could have been spent on the game.

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the Rurikid claim descent from vikings. And hence Russia is rightful Swedish clay.

Before the 12th century they did imitate the spelling of Byzantine way.
>>3827530Austria was originally the eastern part of Bavaria (they were named after the Boii tribe), the Habsburg basically nurture their slice of land into it own identity it didn't happen instantly just like Wang and Antari. Chinese call themself that not due to geographical reason but more metaphysical because they saw their Empire as the center of civilization. And as for the last part that was the result of ethnic replacment, I believe Slav migrants just asked the native Illyrian the name of the land and just assume it's called Bosnia, literally mean running water, instead of the real name of the land. The exact same things happened with the Romans in Britain with Avon.
>check thread>nothing but history lessons>massive improvement to moralehuh, keep at it
>>3827554>he keeps spreading factually wrong information again, now about AustriaAustria in german is to this day called Österreich. Literally meaning Eastern Realm. Which is derived from their status as an eastern march, in defence against Avars and later slavs. Habsburg never changed the name. And in 1918 and the entire interwar, the Austrians actually struggled with selfidentity, and there were many attempts to engineer a new national identity independent from Habsburgs, while on the other hand there were many who wanted to become part of Germany which eventually resulted in the later prevailing and supporting the Anschluss.
Wang's worst attempts at lore was Mydosi or whatever their name was. Irrelevant and more orientalist than Essos, which is really funny to see from an anticolonial guy.
Wow, they made the same exact game for the third time. Why are the official games so unimaginative? And why do all of these games sound much shittier compared to Empyrean?
What's even the difference between curly and wavy hair? The fuck's kinky hair?
>>3827575Wavy hair is Briget
>>3827574I still don't understand why Marquis decided to base his entire stat system on extremely unstable and jumpy opposing pairs.
>>3827578Kinky hair is Crona
>>3827578no it's not
>>3827580and here is curly hair
Wavy and curly seem to be used interchangeably when it concerns hair, but also they mean specifically black hair type, except when they don't. And kinky typically just means the type of hair you get after crashing face-first into a truck.
>>3827514Yes, but you need to take a background that gives you a boost to magic. Circle-taught mages get a couple extra points over being self-taught that gives you enough to pass the checks.>wasting your words of powerIt does seem like using them to properly kill the Faceless Lords is what they're for, and you do get a couple extra assuming that the number of Faceless is correctly identified. On the other it probably is best to conserve as many as possible since there'll probably be something else you need to use Words for because magic won't be enough.

>>3827514>>3827586I used a word on the first faceless because that also saves the kid its possessing but the next two are easy to kill permanently with just magic. >>3827614>I used a word on the first faceless because that also saves the kid its possessing but the next two are easy to kill permanently with just magic. The little girl? Does that ever come up again? If you use magic to deal with the second Faceless you realise that you're not strong enough to destroy in completely, only banish it back to its plane, whereas using a word erases it from existence. Though I don't know if that will have any meaningful difference in the end or if it's just flavour.
Coolest magic specialization?
>>3827634I've only played the first 4 chapters so far, but saving the girl was mentioned offhand once. Probably not worth it.Whether you destroy or banish the second faceless depends on how much damage you do before the final magic/word choice. I fought it in the cellar where burning it with magic, having enough strength to pull off the combo attack with blade/trouble, shoving your weapon in its mouth, etc. will do enough damage that you can destroy it completely with your final magic attack.
>>3827655Any reason to invest in several weapons like sword/bow or is it better to focus on one?
no one wants to share a single doshirak with a sleeper. starving for several cycles is very fun.
>>3827654Diviners or Conjurers, conceptually, especially because you can pick up the demon magic tome if you investigate the cult. I like being a Battle-Mage.>>3827655That makes sense, I used a word during my first playthough and didn't even realise I'd saved her, heh>I fought it in the cellar where burning it with magic, having enough strength to pull off the combo attack with blade/trouble, shoving your weapon in its mouth, etc. will do enough damage that you can destroy it completely with your final magic attack.Ah, I didn't realise you could shove your weapon into its mouth and still try to destroy it with your magic afterwards, I'd done everything else. Thanks.

>>3827665>>3827654I'm only 5 chapters in so far but that's been the most disappointing thing: Your choice of weapon, specialization, heritage, education, what type of magic you focus on, none of it seems to matter. All weapons are treated equally. No checks for specific weapons, none that have an advantage over another. Just pick one and raise it.Every magic check is slightly easier if you've focused on the right school of magic, but the generic magic skill will do just fine too. So as long as you're raising any magic skill, you're good for every type of magic.Specialization, education and heritage all only change a tiny bit of flavor text. It's not enough to sour me on the game but definitely disappointing. Not to sound like a shill but I can't help but compare it to something like AC, where what stats you focus on and which style you choose do actually dictate what you can do inside and outside of combat.>>38277033A looks amazing, how are people stopping at 2C?

Omitting these kinds of things in interactive fiction can filter out female readers who expect cosmetic choices, like hairstyle, even when those choices have no real reactivity in the game.

It was a shame that once you finished her questline she basically disappears from the game.
>>3828064My personal favourite is Navigator because it didn't lie or try to screw me over. Father and daughter are alright, I suppose, but I genuinely don't get why I need to babysit his child and why he expects me to do so outside of the typical gameline of us doing all kinds of shit for people who turn out to be liars and cheats until they finally decide to do something for us. Bounty hunter just poofed after I've finished Feng's questline. I'm thinking about writing a hunter the reckoning (the old one) story because I think hunter-net was cool and imbued are interesting, what are the things I should look out for that are outdated with modern WoD if most of my information comes from the old hunter books? I know one of the middle eastern clans changed its name but thats about it
>>3830453Hunters don't have powers and there is no such thing as imbued, so start with that. Also the government isn't vampires anymore the government is hunters now, somehow.
>>3830453Honestly just write a fan game instead of a commercial one so it can be good. Make an unrelated patreon offering AI generated pics of canned corn, one per month, and I will subscribe to that. Sorry paradox it has nothing to do with his fan work.
>>3830461>>3830458it would be a free fan game eitherway, and I would like to use old reckoning as a base and set the game sometime in the late 90s early 00s with a focus on uncovering some nefarious vamp or some other monster plot and trying not to die/go too crazy in the process
>>3830463and also use hunter net because its COOL and I enjoyed reading all the digital cat-fights in the books from different hunters arguing about their theories on the origins of monsters and the purpose of it all and having reoccurring forum residents with their own personalities

What would you like to see in a potential hunter game? Personally i want the option to hunt alone or to just not have so many friendly characters that ruin the larp, also more actual hunts and stuff like planning out an attack. The coolest part of Glenkincove was soloing that one vampire at the end. Also do the humans in WOD have vampire and werewolf media like in our world? I dont remember any of the two hunter games mentioning or comparing WOD with pop culture.
>>3831251>also more actual hunts and stuff like planning out an attackThat with a sprinkle of schizokino. If you want to go the extra mile, several origins/backstories for us would be cool to have. I would be especially partial to playing a sorcerer or an escaped ghoul.>Also do the humans in WOD have vampire and werewolf media like in our world?Yes, that's part of why thinbloods are so fucked. Their sires abandon them without explaining anything, so they rely on pop culture for information about their unlife. A large part of it is obviously wrong. Proper vampires also use it to muddle the water so hunters look even more unhinged than they are.
>>3831251What I love about Hunter is how it’s all about throwing yourself at insane odds. Only played Hunter the ttrpg twice. First dude I rolled was a 60 year-old engineer with sclerosis, wife was a nurse who got killed at work by some crackhead. Turns out the guy was actually a thinblood. So my boomer went full Ted Kaczynski, started bombing vamps left and right. Ended up dying at home when the local prince sent his scourge to clean thigns up, but not before blowing himself up with half the hit squad.
>>3831251>meticulous preparations for hunts, like how witchers alchemically prepare bombs, oils, enhancing potions and draw up on their book knowledge of the monster for strategies>monsters as not just contract money but as prey worth harvesting for material that can be used in weapons or alchemy>none of that trite, overdone, faggy "we're the real monsters" shit
>>3831251Holy Punisher Mode. Not like an all powerful paladin, but being able to go full 1100s Crusade on their ass, quoting some Pulp Fiction bible verses as I set the match to 186 portable gas tanks I've slowly smuggled into their night club's basement. What makes a Hunter good is they hate vampires more than a regular human could possibly understand.

>>3831370Nice try, Zaper! Go buy some crack and get back to writing.
>>3831271we are though
>>3831251I would like to see moral conflicts and the cell you form arguing over what the right thing to do is. I think there should definitely be some clear cut bad vamps/monsters you can take out without feelings bad about, but also some stuff that muddies the water a bit and can weigh on your conscious, stuff like killing a vamp and finding a kid he's/she recently just recently turned in their basement and having to decide what to do next is compelling to me.

On the off-chance cultivator-anon sees this, the two crests of elemental yin/yang are bugged when you wear them. If you take one off, you lose 2 health (if yang) or chi (if yin). Putting them back on only restores 1, meaning you can go down to 1 in both/either.

Will there be an option in Wars to use the bane to change your gender and become a tranny?
>>3831969Honestly, I'm befuddled how you managed to get a general running at all. There is maybe one ""real"" text-based game a year, while all the choicescript trash is in the permanent state of WIP noncompletion. In the best traditions of non-professional development, nothing surprising there. But evidently it's not even worth shitposting about, if this thread is any indication. Is waifufaggotry that strong? Are there enough schizos to bump the topic for weeks? Do you just cling to the thread because the genre is so stupidly niche that you refuse to let it die for good?>t.ourist who really likes sorcery

>>3832436The oldest thread on the board is more than 200 days old, it's not like we're competing with anyone. WIPs get plenty of discussion.
>>3832436>Do you just cling to the thread because the genre is so stupidly niche that you refuse to let it die for good? That's probably the closest. These threads blew up shortly before Lords of Infinity was officially out, but essentially it was complete. It's an autistic game with an autistic fanbase, so as you could expect, some of /vrpg/ anons were already into that or were potential audience. At the same time, the forum was unusable due to gigafaggots shitting up the discussion with their brownoid angst, so people were more than happy to talk here instead. That carried the first several months, together with Fallen Hero. Every now and then some other game got a bit of discussion. I remember the threads slowing hard at the time of Wayhaven 3 because it was so shit that not even the fans talked about it. Finally, cultivator anon emerged and essentially claimed this place for himself due to a lack of competition.
>>3832436We shitpost a bit but it's also a development thread. A few anons occasionally try their hand at making a game. So far only Aura Clash has made progress but the company banned it for not being gay. >>3832476Twine has been around for longer, and has all of html behind it. Inkle, the ones who made Sorcery, open-sourced their tool as well. RenPy is also no slouch, being python. Anybody making a proper game worth selling will just come up with an ad-hoc system.I assume it's just the pre-established CoG name and niche that is "the appeal" of the language. Maybe duckling syndrome?
>>3832489Twine isn't brainlet-enabling enough for most CS writers. Setting up 4 radko buttons and a continue buttion in twine requires custom labels, classes, opening and closing tags for every choice, a big continue button with a run.engine call and closing tag, if or case statements attached to the variable set by the choice. Choicescript does all that with *choice, one # per option, and some tabs. Twine can make the same game but not fluidly, writing 1m words and stopping for all that code so often is a serious blocker. That may be fixed soon.
learn to code faggots it's easer than writing and saves you from relying on tranny crutch languages
>>3832444And that's usually the case cause they do bump every week or so just so it won't die
>>3832561But coding is so fucking boring
>>3832561It's also that CoG has an active WIP community of roughly 100,000 visitors and ~4k semi-active members. Procuring that kind of community takes years. At the moment nobody else would ever care about an unfinished text based game, while these guys have thousands of people paying monthly to support their favorites across dozens of games.

>>3835341>what are paid advances and royaltiesCoG is literally better than most publishing companies and are generous with their authors, something both wang and zaper could attest to, you guys are just bitter tards

>>3835355post nose
>>3835355>>what are paid advancesLMAO! They don't apply to Hosted, these are pennies and are subtracted from your future sales. Go back to your gay forum.>and royaltiesThe company offers to pay you royalties for making the whole book? Unheard of!
>>3835355>CoG is literally better than most publishing companiesthat's a bar most people couldn't crawl under
>>3835355>advancesDo you know why they call it that?
>>3835355>>what are paid advances and royaltiesStill only 13%. They don't pay you a dime until your cut of the sales have made up for the advance. That's why it's called an advance and not a bonus, it's a payment in advance, and you don't need to be paid again until after you've earned more than the advance.>and royaltiesThat's the 13%.
lmao @ the butter chuds jealous at CoG’s dominance, fact is they’re more generous and that is the reason why they’re attracting new authors and retaining the ones they have, stay mad
>>3835384>jealousUh...anon, we're the customers, not competitors.
>For Mordreds romancing the Dragon Friend tho, they'll have to adopt or get a donor because humans and dragons can't reproduce. The BoC author is a coward!
>>3835384>butteratleast try to be coherent in your shitposts
>>3835424The second someone talked about cog's greedy practices they came out of the woodwork.
>>3835424Exactly what he said, AC fans
wow, cia made people jerk off telepathically. the only game that had more innovative sex scenes compared to most text games was the exact same itch one that I can't remember the name of.
>>3835487The CIA ARE MAKING PEOPLE JERK OFF?!?
>>3835457Stop talking about yourself in third person, fliptranny.
>>3835225#1 that's not true#2 Even if it were true (it's not), in what way is running a website at all comparable to printing and distributing physical copies of a book? There's a reason Steam charges so little, and absolutely no reason CoG should charge more.
AC update when? I need to fix my demon girl's meridians so she can throttle Jack again, this time to death.
So how is the meguca game? Is it Precure kino or is it more CoG liberal revisionism?
>>3835700Anon said that he plans to churn out the next update on Halloween. It will be focused on side content, mostly companion quests.
>>3835709He will port the full game to twine first, I don't think Halloween release is happening.
>>3835705it's a sailormoon fanficnot great not terrible
>>3835713Guess, I will give it a try then
>>3835705decent mechanics, generally well written, fun fights and almost no legbut brainrot that's to be expected from a mainline gameone of the better ones relesed this year, but thats not saying much considering it's competition, the twist was fun tooTOTAL NIGHTMARE DEATH
>>3835700>>3835709Doubled down on the port instead and it's been going faster since I only have to think in one language. Converted chapter 3 in 3 days.
>>3835734bet chapter 7 will hit you like a brick wall
>>3835734>Converted chapter 3 in 3 days.Good job. Are you adding the cut content for early chapters as well or do you intend to leave it for some nebulous future?
>>3835740What hit me like a brick wall is that returning from the menu breaks Switch+Case displays, something I use 300 times in chapter 1 and half of 2. Fighting that requires time with my home laptop which is rare. But yes, Nanhou is going to give me an aneurysm.>>3835741I didn't intend to but some smaller stuff got in. Spending a month to increase skills now gives a little flavor text in chapter 3 and choosing perception gives some cash since I couldn't justify that flavor text not being a real job after I wrote it.
>twine port is going to fix random number rerolling by opening and closing stat menu

I see we have returned to out regularly scheduled programming.
>>3835873don't pirate the game chud! support our struggling authors
>>3835868dead mom 100%. you aren't the protagonist if you don't have atleast one dead parent
>>3835842It's true, I am dead. In seriousness I think they just delete anything off topic, so to repost the only on-topic part: I'm focusing on the twine port instead of splitting my focus, aiming to finish chapter 7 by halloween and add desdemona's quest. The new system won't break saves every update too so I can finally do smaller faster updates.>>3835724I'm surprised, I didn't expect to hear good fight scenes and mechanics from this genre. Not my cup of tea but I might give it a try.
>>3835909the mechanics arent anything new and earthshattering, its just regular stat checks (that are usually very easy to figure out unlike in other cog games where you dont know which stat is tested)the cool thing is that they have multiple uses with creactivity having options in dream world combat allowing you to manipulate the dream as a cooler version of the magic skillanother thing I like is how the author only introduces a couple of plot relevant characters allowing you to shine as a protagonist, rather than subjecting you to a stream of OCs youre forced to interact with (unlike the spire game and the superman clone)>>3835846>>3835824best friend and the new kid are female while the bad guy and the animal companion are maleshould have been an option to romance the animal friend if you turned him human at the end
>>3835921Yeah, Polaris mogs the rest of the cast hard. You should be able to romance her EVEN if she doesn't turn human, Luna got away with why can't she.
>>3835909>won't break savesI'll still be replaying from scratch every patch because I want to, don't be afraid to brick saves as long as you don't start remaking combat regularly.
>>3835758Reloading usually work in twine, assuming cultivator-anon will implement save and load. Still bugged me how CoG never bother to include it for decades, and they argue against it on game design ideological ground from what I know.
>>3835939September PoMA update: Added mystical pet followers with their own stats, bricks savesOctober PoMA update: Removed Pet stats, now different pets add a different bonus, bricks savesDecember PoMA update: Removed pets, bricks saves
>>3835958Don't give Nicky ideas.
>>3835973This is basically how perk system was introduced, reworked and how it's getting removed next month.
>>3835758Yeah, it sucks. Always liked using it to clean out the casino.I don't use it to cycle or anything. In fact, I actively refues to cycle. I just buy stuff with it.

>>3835838Yeah. I don't know why my post was deleted.
>All Those Withering Lilies is an interactive fiction story inspired by Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Neon Genesis EvangelionAlready off to a horrible start
>>3836080I don't know why westoids are so obsessed with Madoka. Sailor Moon, Aikatsu and Precure are superior and do everything Madoka did way better.
>>3836220Madoka is a trans icon somehow.
>>3836224???I can see a lesbian icon at most.
I'm trying the mahou shoujo game and the only that seems mildly interesting is the evil nightmare RO
Alright, finishing 100 Line left me disappointed because of typical corpo fuckery. Time play the Megucka game, replay Arcadie and I really want to replay Undertale too now.
>>3836080>tfw nobody is ever inspired by the only good magical girl show>lyrical nanoha
CCS and Princess Tutu spoiled me on the magical girl genre. Nothing else even comes close.
As I begin my replay I am once again reminded how authors always make up these "super cool" fantasy metals and trade goods. I will never comprehend why. Like in most of these worlds, just irl materials would be still absolutely valuable. Amber would be sought out valuable trade good in most fantasy worlds.
>>3836377You may want to create a bullshit metal for whatever properties.Mithril, virbanium, wolfunium
>>3836377I think its for macguffin's purposes. If you don't know chemistry you'll need to invent a material that reacts in the way you need it to.
Saturnine had an interesting hook/premise to start with and then did everything in its power to make me lose interest. If part of a CYOA has to suck I'd prefer it to be the other way around.
>>3836377So that later in the story they can reveal that the MC or villain have a magical super weapon that uses that non-existent miracle material, you dumb fuck
