Let's talk about RPG settings that are unconventional, alien, surreal, strange, etc. At least relatively speaking for the genre. Been in a mood to experience these kinds of places.
Getting an obvious one out of the way, as I'm sure a lot of people here know it, or have played PT. But for those who know little to nothing, the setting in Planescape Torment is the city of Sigil. Its a weird place sitting in a plane of D&D hell. Humans live there but also a bunch of nonhuman races and demons. Buildings are alive, there's pocket dimensions everywhere, and the queen of the city can slice you apart with her shadow by accident. The slums are pretty nasty places, and the snooty royalty arent much better. It's weird to even see a sword, most people have knives, clubs, axes, etc.
Shin Megami Tensei II's Tokyo Millenium fits the bill.Basically, real world Earth after the apocalyptic events of SMT I, the Messian faction makes a "utopian" city, completely enclosed from the outside surface. A highly religious city-state that still has futuristic technology like teleportation, super soldiers, robotics, etc, and there's still demons, magic, and the occult. And some pretty messed up hierarchical abuses. Below the city are tunnels and massive caverns where the old world of Tokyo can still be found.
For me, itβs Tomorrowind.https://www.somethingawful.com/hosted/jeffk/tomorrowind/
Ar Tonelico series. No, I won't elaborate.
>>3836416Hat world. The setting is a pocket plane where a select few people shape their own realities around concepts most important to them.Actually, no. The entire setting is a corporate blacksite in our real world used by several very powerful shadow governments to achieve world domination. And the only person keeping things in check is a high-rank member of a death cult.
>>3836431>something awful>decide to humor you and open the link>its 9gag tier "humor"
>>3836485>Boy, that article sure was Something Awful2002 was a different time, buddy. I dunno what 9gag is, sounds like some zoomer shit
>>3836416depending on what you count as exotic some of these may fitdarksunalbionravenloft 2al-quadimand maybe ultima savage empire?
>>3836485it's a goons' world and your'e living in it...
Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey sounds perfect for what you want.
>>3836493>some zoomer shitPredates zoomer shit by a good margin.
>>3836663Already played and loved it to be honest
>>3836416There is no VRPG setting for your image, anon. There was a ttrpg supplement for it though.
>>3836416I... suppose that contemporary setting where taming various fantastical creatures and battling them became a significant part of culture, laws and politics is kind of unique?
>>3836416What do you consider alien or surreal? Underrail is definitely one of the most unique settings ever made. Caves Of Qud is definitely surreal and alien.
>>3836463>only personRude. This Jacou erasure is unnecessary.
>>3836795>is kind of unique? Not even remotely
>>3836911>post-apoc underground>one of the most uniquelol
>>3837308>never actually played it
>>3836416kara-tur
The 9th world in Tides of Numenera, I'll playthrough it again one day occasionally still remember it fondly.
>>3837306Was thinking about playing these sometime, what's the QRD?
>>3837506What does it have besides being Fantasy Asia?
>>3839048>What does it have besides being Fantasy Asia? That's it. That's an exotic setting, relative to fantasy Europe.
>>3836456I've had the roms downloaded and I should get around to playing it.>>3839043tl;dr shit happens and humanity lives on floating islands because the ground is coated in ~miasma~
>>3836942Oh, come on! Not reporting things is hardly an achievement. Besides, she hurt our favorite tourretes girl.
>>3836416Dark Sun is pretty rad.
>>3836416Metal Max is pretty damn unconventional, especially as far as JRPGs go.
>>3840109One of the best JRPGs I ever played.
>>3836416Wild Arms>RPG but wild west setting>What if we include summons, magic, and sci-fi stuff
>>3836417He asked about RPGs.
>>3841819Genesis Shadowrun is an action game.
>>3841821It has strong emphasis on character building and side quests.
>>3841823So does San Andreas, both are console action games.
>>3841824I doubt you played much of Shadowrun. Character bulding is it's primary focus with its extensive system, it has choice & consequence like helping out Stark which will make him join your party, and party management plays a primary role in combat outcome. There is very, very little action in that game, about as much as in Baldur's Gate 1 if you remove the pause function.
>>3841825I mostly played the snes one but always found it fascinating there were two games with the same name but totally different gameplay.
>>3841825Combat is literally action based. Sorry, but you are posting half-RPGs in an RPG thread.
>>3841849It's tick based. Bait better next time, little one.
>>3841863So is Minecraft, another action game. Many online action games are tick based.Stop posting half-RPGs.
>>3841865It's not an action game. It's gameplay fundamentals are character buidling, party management, and skill checks utilized for cyberspace, combat and various world interactions like hacking doors. You can't win in a battle against a superior enemy if your combat stats and augs suck, that alone nullifies your argument. It also has an extensive magic system that brings tactics to combat.Boy, do I love speaking with low effort trolls who haven't even played games they're talking about.
>>3841872It's literally an Action RPG. This is an RPG thread. Just because you personally can't beat it without exploiting the character building is a personal problem. Please play a real RPG like Septerra Core to understand the difference.
>>3841876>Please play a real RPG like Septerra CoreStopped reading there.
>>3841877I accept your concession, troll.
>>3841878Undertranny, is that you? How's the thread going down?
>>3841879I don't post in any faggy generals, so your reference is a miss for me.
>>3841922That proves you are. Stay mad, and dare I not see you once more have a nerve to troll people who actually play RPGs unlike you.
>>3841932I love these one-sided conversations we have. I'm a new person every time.
>>3841876Hi, it's OP.I'm stating now that action RPGs are fine. The whole point was exotic settings. Chill the fuck out.
>>3842218Fuck off, brainlet faggot. I was making a point.
>>3842356No you didn't. You're a weak undertranny troll who doesn't know shit about RPGs or games in general. Perish, as you have no right to be on this board in the first place and are already pushing boundaries.
>>3842356>A guy that started that thread comes and tells that he only wants exotic settings and isn't bothered by action RPGs being discussed.>Hurr Durr fuck off, this thread is about me!God, I hope your nutsack rots off. Retards like you belong on a cross.
Superhero League of Hoboken is pretty weird
>>3842439But it's just New York in like 50 years...
>>3842406I've played far far more RPGs than you. Not really an accomplishment.>>3842413It went over your head. Fuck off.
Any good Arab settings?
>>3842468Al-Qadim: The Genie's Curse
>>3842468Quest for Glory 2
>>3842466>I've played far far more RPGs than youWe all know you haven't played a single one, undertranny. Quit larping.
arcanumog falloutsage of decadencekenshi (altho its underwritten in a sense that many things make very little sense like factions being called glass pirates) and underwhelming in a sense that you cannot use space elevators or rebuild some auto guns from relic technology. still very unique.kotor2 (it puts entire setting on its head with "all power bad" and consigns setting for endless wars statement).
>>3836795nah, that's not odd at all. There were modern contemporary rpgs >Makai Kingdom a strange space in which odd gods interact and create worlds>Paper mario A story book whimsical world>Magic Pengel>Star ocean>Kingdom hearts>baktai
>>3836416More an adventure game than RPG, but I can't not mention it. Protag gets converted into a vampire, but the chip in his brain that are supposed to help him differentiate reality with cyberspace prevents vampirism to spread, sending him on a path of revenge and seeking the cure. The most accurate and raddest depiction of cyberpunk in vidya. If Gibson had a thing for Stoker I would imagine Neuromancer to be roughly like this.If you're getting this on GOG make sure to turn off sound in game's settings to have subtitles, or even better get a floppy version to have both subtitles and sound in combat sequences.
>>3842474I'm curious now, is the Undertranny thing about Underrail or Undertale?
>>3842523Undertale of course, seems like he is still mad from me pissing in their sore thumb thread. I doubt an Underrail player would be as retarded, let alone be determined to troll in such manner.
>>3842530Interesting larp.
>>3842530Underrail has its own blend of obtuse faggotry. In reality, few communities do not these days.
>>3836416frutiger aero: the game
da best
>>3844258
>>3844389>mfw baitkun posts yet another rpg set in a strange volcanic land with giant mushrooms and transport bugs ruled by 3 false elf gods
>>3840100>bug clericI will now play your game.
>>3844401Pick a druid, cleric sucks in that setting.
>>3836416I'm actually reading picrel, and I'm so disappointed not many people capitalized on making a game in such an alien setting where you hhave encounters is impossible almost dreamlike scenarios with incomprehensible alien entities. I think Planescape comes closest, but Book of the New Sun feels like such a underutilized gold mine for RPG settings.
>>3836416Ahh, I believe we're in the same boat man. Always looking for shit like that as well. Given the dying earth setting of BotNS, Caves of Qud might be your best bet. Morrowind, of course. Then there's Failbetter/Alexis Kennedy stuff like Book of Hours, Cultist Simulator, Fallen London, Sunless Sea. Tyranny's world really resonated with me during the time I've read BotNS. (Also worth reading Black Company or Malazan if you like that)Also early From stuff like Eternal Ring and Shadow Tower hold up really well and have cool surreal environments. Pathologic/The Void also fall into that category.Rain World is an obvious choice, though not much of an RPG. Disco Elysium's worldbuilding has a lot of very "weird" shit to it if you stop taking everything at face value. The Zenoclash games are supposedly also really good but I personally never played them. I'll think of some more.
>>3836416Exile/Avernum's pretty alright. The bulk of it takes place in a massive series of underground caverns which the Empire uses as a dumping ground for its undesirables.
>>3849192>The bulk of it takes place in a massive series of underground caverns which the Empire uses as a dumping ground for its undesirables.Literally this.
>>3845098Too much work, too little reward. Coming up with something new is really hard and 90% of people just want more dwarves and goblins because familiarity makes them feel safe.
>>3849286>A setting so dull they dropped it in the second game.Hell nah! Avernum Is heads and shoulders above that crap.
>>3849335do you have brain damage
>>3849335>they dropped itSeems like you haven't even made it to the Pits of Carnage, zoomie.
>>3849343Looks like you didn't even reach the Avit, zoomie.>>3849341You do since you were dumb enough let Garriot scam you into thinking otherwise.
Do you retards have to start a shitflinging match over everything?
>>3849353Yes
>>3842473Whoever programmed this animation...they knew.
>>3849367If only they programmed that game better too.
>>3849349>Garriot scamGarriot and Origin had nothing to do with the development of both Underworld games. It was made by Looking Glass (Blue Sky then).
>>3849286Kinda but not really, it's more "Underdark" than dungeon.
>>3849349>Looks like you didn't even reach the Avit, zoomie. What the fuck did you mean by that? You falsely claimed they dropped the prison-ghetto setting, I reminded your dumb ass that they didn't.
>>3836416Is there a cool African setting in any media?
>>3849953Guild Wars: Nightfall.
>>3849960Interesting. Gw 1 is actually a decent game, despite being mmo.
>>3849953Nehekara in Warhammer Fantasy.
>>3850332Isn't that rather north africa/Egypt? It's in araby, the me setting of wh. North Africa is technically Africa so it does count.
>>3836416Tyranny obviously has a top-tier setting. Planescape Torment is another obvious example, but a major part of the strangeness of planescape torment comes from the shitty graphics and the fact that the game happens across multiple realms/domains where very little is explained about the lore etc
>>3836416You are all wrong and stupid for not having mentioned Earthbound. There is no further discussion. Jannies, close this thread.
>>3852635Another bait... sigh.
I enjoy a lot of soldak entertainment's games. Zombasite in particular is a neat premise.Only issue is that the games seem to work on and off for a lot of systems. Drox operative 2 is supposed to run on linux/steamos but does not.
>>3836416Why hasn't anyone actually made a BOTNS game yet?
>>3853130>you press the A button>...or did you?
>>3853245>No, it was your grandmother who did it>Also, flower duel
>>3852617>the fact that the game happens across multiple realms/domains where very little is explained about the lore etc
