What is the comfiest JRPG?
>>
Probably Legend of Mana. Zero challenge, all aesthetic.
>>
>>3837907
You just posted it. That or Lunar.
>>
FF IX, the original Kingdom Hearts or Ni no Kuni i guess. My criteria being you don´t have to check guides or play just the right way to indulge autistic behaviors to get ultimate weapons or secret endings. You just play and have fun. It doesn´t get more relaxing and thus comfier than that.
>>
>>3837936
>FF IX
>you don´t have to check guides or play just the right way to indulge autistic behaviors to get ultimate weapons

Anachronox, anyone who says otherwise shouldn’t be posting here

Great pick.
>>

Still waiting for the sequel, I heard it's any day now
>>

>comfiest
Is that what we're calling this bloated, do nothing, go nowhere black hole of plot series now?
>>
>>3838152
sky 1 is an incredibly comfy game, though. objectively.
>>
>>3838152
You can't judge the old games on what the series became. That's like saying Final Fantasy 6 is bad because Final Fantasy 16 was bad.

Wow, multiple people on /vrpg/ have used the word "comfy" in a sentence before? That's incredible, what are the odds?
>>
>>3838095
[skeleton_on_bench.jpg]
>>
>>3838084
Funny thing is that I dislike the game. It's pretentious, vacuous, and poorly designed.
>>
>>3838262
What makes it "pretentious"? Just because the writing/overall quality wasn't as good as the art and music ?
>>
>>3837907
Octopath fans will say their game is the best JRPG out there because all they want is a comfy grindable "open-world" JRPG, while not doing anything new or groundbreaking at all
>>
>>3838275
The narratives in general are trying too hard and float between somber and whimsical to the point of whiplash. I don't really care about quality, but rather content.
>>
>>3838282
Yeah I don't think Mana games ever put much effort on the narratives either
>>
>>3838286
Yeah, they should've put "less" effort into LoM.
>>
>>3838276
>while not doing anything new or groundbreaking at all
Not everything needs to be new or groundbreaking.
>>
>>3837938
It's true, though. I played FF9 for the first time a couple of years ago and I got pretty much everything that mattered. obviously Excalibur II is effectively unattainable, but it's really just a trophy for hardcore fans on future replays, anyway. It's really not hard at all to find everything in FF9 as long as you're not an ignorant retard who doesn't engage with games.
>>
>>3838458
It's not a good example of a game that has no obscure guidebait secrets though. If you ignore guidebait to begin with, then
>It's really not hard at all to find everything in
almost every jRPG.
>>
>>3837907
"comfy" is a subjective term. But Skies of Arcadia and Grandia really do it for me. Dragon Quests 5, 8, and 11 are solid, as well as Final Fantasies 5, 7, and 9.

The problem is that, at some point, games become "comfy" to you just because you're used to them, and not necessarily because they have a naturally-occuring aura of comfort.
>>
>>3838461
>t's not a good example of a game that has no obscure guidebait secrets though.
What are some of these "obscure guide bait secrets", outside of Excalibur II, which obviously isn't something you're even supposed to get on a normal playthrough?
>>
>>3838276
>all they want is a comfy grindable "open-world" JRPG, while not doing anything new or groundbreaking at all
Arguably, the Dragon Quest III remake is better at doing all of that than either Octopoath.
>>
>>3838470
Ah, you're slow.
>outside of Excalibur II
See, you say this is ignorable. well then every game with guidebait should have that guidebait be ignorable. What's an example of guidebait that really adds something to the game? It's all inconsequential if one is.
>>
>>3838461
>It's really not hard at all to find everything in
>almost every jRPG.
Exactly the point. "Playing without a guide" is not the same thing as "playing without a brain". Just because something isn't super-obvious or dropped right in your lap doesn't mean you need a guide for it. That's true for 99% of FF9's content. Chono Cross, on the other hand, requires you do make some decisions, often unknowingly, that keep you from being able to do certain quests or obtain certain characters later on. But then, it's definitely a game designed for multiple replays.
>>
>>3838481
Routes aren't guidebait.
It's a stupid requirement for a game to be considered "comfy" only if it lacks missables, but FF9 doesn't. Any jRPG can be beat without guides, so it's not about the game at that point, it's about the player and their fomo.
>>
>>3838475
So what guidebait does FF9 have besides the intentionally-challenging Excalibur II which is meant to be earned by diehard fans after multiple playthroughs? You didn't really answer. You just insulted me and made a word salad.
>>
>>3838488
lmao, your question meant you didn't understand my post, moron.
>>
>>3837918
The challenge is understanding the various complex systems you don't actually need to engage with because the game is so easy.

This game would probably be one of my favorite games of all time if it even had an inkling of challenge and a few fixes to the combat. The concept is so fucking brilliant, I've always wanted to be immersed in a bizarre, fickle fairy tale world like the one in Legend of Mana. The fact that characters who have died in the various stories in the game can be found wandering the "Underworld" region is just the fucking icing on the cake of detail this game has... All it really needs is more application to the mechanics, which are already quite vast."
God, the music is just too fucking good as well

The comfiest JRPG is (You)r favorite JRPG, played on a cool summer evening by an open bedroom window while the crickets gently chirp and the aroma of dinner being cooked by your mom wafts throughout the house.
>>
>>3839640
This. Phantasy Star IV is one for me. Whenever I hear the Motavia map theme I remember the smell of salmon cooking, because my dad used to cook it nearby while I played.
>>
True comfiness is an anachronism from earlier video game experiences, it's an inaccessible quality in the internet age.

This is the good shit. Thanks for sharing the memory, anon. Every post on /vrpg/ should strive to be this profound.

For me, it was playing Grandia on a cold, overcast fall day while my mom let her homemade tomato sauce simmer. I loved pasta, so when I smelled that I knew it was going to be a comfy night for adventure. I used to love leaving my window open a crack even when it was chilly, because something about the smell of fresh air and dinner mixing together just soothed my fucking soul and still does.

>>3839654
>it's an inaccessible quality in the internet age.
Nah, it's definitely possible. You just gotta work on disconnecting and focusing on the little things that bring true joy and comfort and not the superficial dopamine hits we subsist on—life as an adult (especially in current year) just tends to train us to explicitly devalue and overlook the things that brought us infinite joy as children. But you can re-learn.

Like, a few years ago I was playing FF9 for the first time, and it was chilly as fuck in my drafty old house, so I had a blanket, and then my cat came to chill with me and I started to get emotional because it was a kind of simple joy that I think I had forgotten how to feel. Playing a fun game with a beloved pet on my lap would have given me a high I could ride for a week if I'd been 8 years old. I probably would have written about it in my school journal and told my whole class about it.

picrel, say hi to my cat. He's all right.

>>3837907
Rune Factory 3 and 4, before the Xseed subhumans desecrated the entire wholesomeness with Troon Faggotry 5
RF1-2 are too clunky to be comfy, but the atmosphere is there, maybe try them first if you like the idea because you will not be able to play older games without the QoL of RF3-4
>>
>>3839671
I'm allergic to cats, I will never know what it's like to pet one and enjoy it or live with one.
>>
>>3839664
The inherent connectivity of all electronic experiences in the internet age foregoes any true authentic experience of comfiness, the best you can do is zoomer larpisms, which as previously stated as shallow anachronisms.
You can't "disconnect" it is not a choice, you either engage with the media or you don't and the media is what it is. You fundamentally do not understand media, nor form, nor content, nor anything really.
>>
Comfiest RPG for me is Super Mario RPG. I remember playing it with my cousin before he hanged himself.

I keep cats because I live in the country and they are better at catching rats than poison traps

Visually chrono cross takes the cake, the peaceful music the calm parts, the light humor, cute girls...just great

But if I could go back to the 10 to 99 hour marks on dragon quest 7 again for the first time and cruise around talking to people and just sitting on backyard couch thing, sipping coffee in the crisp fall morning again. Fuck id pay alot, I was in my mid 30s and it felt like i was 12 again sitting in the downstairs family room in my boxers again. Just pure gaming nirvana man. Took me to a better place for sure.

How did you get Excalibur II again?

FF IX is mad easy so no need to get all the best equipment anyway. I played it again recently, it's a good time. I really like the equipment/skill system they used.
>>
>>3838465
I need to actually play Skies of Arcadia. I had it on my Dreamcast and never actually played it, but it always looked appealing. I'll have to emulate it, which is probably best since then I can speed it up. I recall watching a video of the combat sometime in the recent past and it looked very slow.
>>
>>3845241
>How did you get Excalibur II again?
You need to get to a certain point at the end of the game within 12 hours of starting the game.
>>
>>3837907
>What is the comfiest JRPG?
The latest game, and one I found comfy without the help of nostalgia, was Tales of Arise. Such a pleasant game. I'm never driven to 100% games, but with that one I just kept playing until I had done everything. The party, music, visuals, gameplay, the crafting, I enjoyed all of it.
>>
>>3845242
>I recall watching a video of the combat sometime in the recent past and it looked very slow.
I won't say it's not at times, but it never really bothered me. The worst thing is the load times for random encounters, but if you're emulating that won't be an issue.

It's weird. I've always considered myself a very impatient person, but I've never had an issue with "slow" battles. SoA and FF9 are two of the biggest that people always bitch about, but I love them both and still play them on original hardware, load times and all.
