A very small amount of JRPGs do this, much smaller than the amount of games that don't. Final Fantasy 2 (1988) had a male healer and a female pirate. Dragon Quest 3 (1988) lets both gender be any class. Fire Emblem (1990) has 4 male healers and 3 female healers, and more warrior-type women than mage-type women. All those series have been full of male mages, including some nerdy ones and some non-nerdy ones. You are chasing shadows of your own imagination.

The characters are very cute, I like they're a tight-nit group of friends who care about each other. Being unable to reach regions mid and late game and the plot ending without resolution bothered me though.I never played the OG two though, they're back in my backlog and heard they were nice
