Let's discuss games in the "scrollslike" subgenre; basically games that have the design philosophy of 3D Elder Scrolls/3D Fallout/Gothic, but that are not necessarily in those series. Examples include:
>Two Worlds 1-2
>Elex
>Outward
>Gedonia
>Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon
Which "scrollslike" games are your favorite? Which upcoming games in the genre are you looking forward to? Can we come up with a name for this subgenre that doesn't sound as gay as "scrollslike?"
>>
Comedy option: Avowed

>looking forward to?
Added Sword Hero to my wishlist. Besides it and Wayward Realms I haven't heard of anything to get hype for. Tainted Grail looks too Todd McFarlane for me.

is outward fun? I just started. I wanted to get used to the controls and gameplay before onboarding a friend
>>
>>3843694
Gedonia was alright for an asset flip made by a single man
>>

MM 6 and 7 (but party based.)

OP here. Personally, I didn't find Outward fun. It has a lot of good qualities and is designed as a very "hardcore" RPG, so it's quite difficult compared to Skyrim or Fallout. My biggest problem was that the open world was so empty that large parts of the game just consisted of walking around looking at nothing. Whenever you die you get respawned in a random spot, so you spend a lot of time just walking. There are some mods for adding in fast travel, increasing walking speed, etc. so if this bothers you like it did me it may still not be a dealbreaker. A lot of other people really liked the game so take what I say with a grain of salt.
>>
>>3843694
Outward isn't one because it forgot to actually put things in the world worth travelling to.
Outward is a walking simulator.
>>
>>3843694
modded Skyrim in VR.
I wasnt a fan of flatscreen skyrim at all but VR takes it entirely to another level and throw in all the mod gameplay enhnancment and crazy shit and its an entirely new game.

I've never played it, but Dread Delusion keeps getting pushed on my Steam recommended and it seems to fit the genre. The reviews are keen on comparing to Morrowind.

I'm keeping an eye on Tainted Grail, personally. The demo hooked me, but the recent reviews make it sound like the most recent patch was a dud, and I've literally never paid more than £30 for a video game. It's 30 pence above what I'd normally grab, as petty as that sounds.
>>
>>3843949
I love Tainted Grail to be honest. It feels like the logical evolution of Skyrim. Every negative review I've read has me wondering what game the reviewers are playing, because it's not the one I'm playing.
>>
>>3843967
It can be a bit janky.
>>
>>3843694
I fucking love Outward. It's so underappreciated it's almost criminal.
You forgot to mention Dread Delusion.
>>
>>3844215
The jank is comparable to Skyrim and to some extent comes with the territory. I don't let stuff like that bother me if the base game is fun.
>>
>>3843967
It really just needed another year in the oven, act 1 (the content that was playtested extensively in early access) is so much better than 2 and 3, it's like night and day.

Apparently the newest patch expanded on them a bit but I haven't personally tried it. I'll probably do another playthrough a year or two from now, still enjoyed it quite a bit
>>
I'm playing Tainted Grail and it's pretty enjoyable eurojank.
Solid 7.5/10

I liked Outward to some extent, but it's not "scrollslike" enough. Most games aren't, even if they try to offer exploration.
The problem is that they have a limited quantity of actually worthwhile shit to find, and the less of it there is, the more likely they're to spoil actually finding it for you.
OW actually has very few points of interests per map, so it shows most of them from the get go, and it just turns into a checklist. It's no bandit camp cleanup, but I wouldn't call it exploration either. Also the towns are so surface-level you could put them in a JRPG.

finally got around to playing fall of avalon, pure slavjank but I'm having a lot of fun
also loving this art direction
>>
>>3843725
I did not enjoy it at all, and I played it mostly co-op. Single player was painful, with bandits that could perma-block due to insane stamina regen, monsters spawning in behind you, and the most effective strategy being:

1) Lay down a bunch of spike traps
2) Pull a monster with a bow
3) Drag it through the spike traps

Congratulations, you win. They leaned too far into the "hardcore" meme, with excessively long and locked animations which are incredibly janky (hitboxes and weapon swing connection points are awkard and don't make sense).

I feel like it's a meme game.

If you can spare some change try CHIM or SkyrimNet. Adding in AI NPC interactions will catapult that fucker into the stratosphere.

Assuming you don't mind dealing with LLMs, anyway.
>>
>>3843694
Avowed, and it's shit
>>
>>3849470
I had the same problems with Outward. There's almost nothing in the overworld, and you can't even talk to most people in the towns.
>>
I was impressed by the old demo for Ardenfall. Haven't played the 2025 one yet
>>
>>3851661
I played the old demo and remember there being a ton of walking around aimlessly at a slow pace, which put me off. Hopefully that's been fixed. It grinds my gears when games make me do something that's needlessly tedious.
>>
>>3843694
Elex was alright, the jetpacking carried the game though.
Had more fun with Outward, but hard to consider it the "scrolls genre" and looking forward to Outward 2.
Tainted Grail is the one im playing now, it feels the most "elder scrolls" and still in the 1st act its pretty fun

Avowed is so fucking misunderstood. You ever see the same few webm's from 1st person view in some tight spot or a dungeon and get PTSD from thinking you are back in draugr burial cave complex #243. In reality it's absolutely beautiful with wide open spaces, scale and sense of adventure. A shame.

Did you even try it dipshit?

>5 permanently summoned creatures instead of the typical "you get only 1 and it stays around for 60 seconds before despawning" TES bullshit
>you can command them to attack specific enemies, just left click and 5 angry skellingtons run right past you straight at the enemy
>with perks they actively boost mana regen and spell power, letting you actively participate in the fight with your horde
thank you tainted grail

Todd would never let me do this without mods

>Dread
Dread Delusion
I've seen this mentioned but nobody talks about it, its a pretty impressive indie game thats worth playing if you like Morrowind
Its got a wack-ass (but comprehensible) setting, tons of unique locations, dozens of side quests that are ALL interesting

However, the game doesn't have the same mechanical depth as most RPGs. The combat sucks, the soundtrack gets repitive, and (some) of the writing is subject to tranny-ism (but not enough to make the game bad)

I put about 20hrs into it, and theres still a lot I haven't done. Its pretty good, very good writing. Worth playing. I'm excited for their next game, Entropy.
>>
>>3843694
I just finished tainted grail, and I can't think of any game more deserving of being called scrolls-like, since it feels like a skyrim mod.
Honestly if you told me the enderal guys had made another overhaul for skyrim and gotten a licence to sell it as a separate game from bethesda I'd have believed it, they're THAT similar.
It isn't a bad game by any means, but honestly I was expecting a lot more. It feels very shallow and unfinished on pretty much every level, bargain bin material through and through.
>>
>>3855024
this is literally nothing like morrowind.
