Toontown remains as one of the best implementations of multiplayer turn based combat. Why are turn based mmos so rare?
Ah, this is the new gimmick, MMOshit.
>>3844454Have you ever actually played it? It's pretty cool and has some in depth mechanics
I love this game but you're not going to find any discussion of it on 4chan. I tried on /vr/ before and it got derailed pretty quickly
>>3844454>new gimmickToontown is older than World of Warcraft.
>>38445444chan hates fun and whimsy apparently
troontown
>>3844449When I started playing online RPG's and saw retards talking about "toons", I thought they were referring to this game, and I thought that it was, for some reason, "mega popular" since everyone seemed to just casually mention and acknowledge it.
>>3844449Based thread. I've always felt similarly OP, toontown is the peak of the MMO genre, but most mmorpg fans aren't ready for this truth since they just want to play glorified single player games.
>newest event gives out pride and trans accesoriespass
>>3847205>passMore like doesn’t pass.
>>3846049Are there any other games like it?
>>3844449what does it have over other turn-based network multiplayer games?
>>3847514Calling your characters “toons”
>>3847514There are other turn-based network multiplayer games? I only know of Atlantica online and the 101 games. Out of those toontown is the best.
>>3847583Probably not MMORPGs because that would be retarded. But TRPGs. Even Fallout Tactics had turn-based option for its online multiplayer.
>>3847645Why is a turn based MMORPG "retarded"? It's the best use of the genre as you have to coordinate with other players what move you are going to make and strategize. You actually have to make friends and talk to people in order to play the game. >>3847514I like how it is extremely group based and communication focused. The turn based gameplay is simple and intuitive enough that anyone can understand it, but also always requires communication and strategy with other players in order to succeed. Obviously, it's toontown, there's nothing too crazy hard, but it encourages player interactivity in a way that is hard to experience in other MMOs. I had a huge shock going from playing toontown to something like FFXIV where everybody is so anti-social in that game. And FF14 especially seems to discourage group play! Like, what's the point of it being an MMO? But whatever. I also like the charm and creativity of the art style, music, and general feel of the game.
How could the ToonTown formula be improved? It feels like it fits the definition of "good enough" while still being stale.Maybe it's just because the game is over 20 years old, and strategies have been refined to a point by now, but I feel like there's some way to diversify things up a bit.Maybe we don't need three tracks that work pretty much the same way just with a varied range of accuracy and damage. Maybe we can think of a better interaction between Lure and the other gags. Maybe Trap could have a more robust use, like lowering cog accuracy.Maybe we could limit which gags a toon could get even more than just 6/7 so it's not just the choice between Trap and Drop, which are the two worst ones.
>>3849030It would absolutely need some refining.Changing up a few gag tracks and adding new ones, one to two I think. Each character would be able to specialize in three tracks kinda like you said. And then you would be able to choose one of the level 7 gags for each track, make them "Specialize". There's a whole bunch of good fan games that expand on the formula, i think corporate clash is the biggest but there's other interpretations. I really like how cogworks did it in particular
Why didn't more mmos try turn-based drop in combat ? It was awesome. Why do they just do tab target shit still
>>3849152I think it's because the way turn based is implemented in Toontown or Wizard101 is especially slow. Even more so if you've got a slow person in the group. You have 20 seconds to choose your attack, and most of the time, you know what you're going to do immediately. If your party member takes the full 20 seconds, you'll have to just sit there and wait.Typical Tab Targetting systems (the oldest one I played was WoW) essentially sub out turns for Global Cooldowns. Everyone's max speed is roughly the same, not accounting for gear that speeds you up. so if one person is slow, then it doesn't affect you.You know how much MMO players love optimizing, and hate anyone slowing things down even a bit.Plus, these days turn based is seen as a niche gameplay element.
>>3847583Dofus is an MMORPG with a turn based tactics battle system, it was fun back in the day but not sure about the current state of the game. It had a really nice art style though>>3844449>>3849152I agree with >>3849201 that most MMO players just don't like slow combat where you have to wait more than a second or 2 to do an action, so waiting 20+ seconds for each other player to make a move scares a lot of people away
>>3848961>gameplay is simple and intuitive enough that anyone can understand it, but also always requires communication and strategy with other players in order to succeedVague as fuck. Also those traits are not inherent/exlusive to either TB or RT gameplay. You have said nothing concrete about the game's combat system, only that you like its aesthetics.
>>3849839how is any of what they said aesthetics. absolutely nothing of what they said was aesthetic. its aesthetic is looking like a cartoon>>3849201 talks a bit more about it too
Is corporate clash the best
>>3850481Yes. Toontown rewritten is fine but its grindy, slow and boring. Toontown Corporate Clash is an actual good implementation of the mechanics and an example of how Toontown can actually be a great game
