How in the hell do you choose a class in an rpg?

I've started over in the same game dozens of times, and I can't figure out which class to play. I don't like any of them.

Do you guys have a specific type of class you play in every game?

The protagonist should always be a fighter. Who else would you follow into battle than the man brave enough to charge the front line?
You're not realistically going to follow a grown man in a dress who hides at the back swinging a wand around like a girl.
>>

>I've started over in the same game dozens of times
What game?
>>
>>3844866
When I was young I used to make a talker characters because I was under impression that every RPG was like Fallout where you could talk your way out of most of the encounters. Then I realized that most of the 'rpgs' are combatslops and it's generally safer to go with a fighter since it other classes can have convoluted mechanics while fighter is always reduced to 1 button
>>
>>3844867
People do it all the time. Look at Trump or Biden, they're cowards who've never gone into battle and never will, but they give the order and their zogbots go and get fucking blown up for them.
>>
>>3844866
I always roll an archer then restart 4 hours in because archers invariably suck in RPGs
>>
>>3844866
>How in the hell do you choose a class in an rpg?
EZ. I play a paladin in every game. If there's no paladin, then I make one.
>I've started over in the same game dozens of times
I do this too, until I reach some critical mass of progress, and then I don't feel like replaying the beginning anymore, and power through to the end.
>and I can't figure out which class to play. I don't like any of them
Probably because you're not picking paladin, baka-san
>Do you guys have a specific type of class you play in every game?
Sure do. It's paladin
>>
>>3844876
Most fun I had in Icewind Dale was making a party of 4 elf archers and just wrecking shit. They would shred small targets and pretty much stunlock large ones.
>>
>>3844876
I've played more games where archers are overpowered than I have games where they're weak.

If you have choice paralysis, try limiting your choices. Pick a pure mage, fighter, or a thief, for example.

Or pick a class that's challenging. Little extra incentive to go all the way.

Or create a strong vision for a character and go full roleplay. (could add some challenge that way too)

I do whatever I feel like at the time.

Easily.
I check how interesting/well implemented Paladin, Wizard and Monk/Barehanded are, in that order.
If for some reason none are covered well or at all(no concept of paladin, shitty spell list, no unarmed support/ki shit) , I make it a point to build a guy who does the most damage wielding a huge ass weapon.

If all 3 are covered, they tend to become the focus of different runs.

I technically have also two cases where I pay attention (psi builds and gunner builds in fantasy setting), but the yare far rarer so not part of teh standard selection process.

You have to be quite the autistic retard to not have at least a basic aesthetic or RP guideline you want to try.

Something that does bother me is taking the time to make a character and then one of the first party members you run into is exactly the same but with boosted stats.
>>
>>3844906
95% of the time, you can make a better character even if the stats are boosted due to unique mc benefits or pivot the other character to something else.
>>
>>3844866
>How in the hell do you choose a class in an rpg?
you don't, the class chooses you
>>
Choose? I play a mage and make it hit as hard as possible, if damage can be completely avoided I try not to ever invest into max hp.
>>
>>3845001
Damn. This be some wisdom. I will do some research and some experimentation. I am always looking for thief, archer and glass canon blaster caster, in that order. I wanna break the game over my thigh while I rob everyone blind, sneak everywhere, backstab, trap and all that jazz. If I can't have that, then I wanna snipe and kite or just blow shit up. Sometimes it takes awhile to learn how a game works and how your playstyle meshes with the game. CRPGs are complex.
>>
>>3844867
Anon. Have you ever seen LotR? Gandalf ain't no pussy. Morherfucker fights with a sword and doesn't afraid of anything.
>>
>>3845075
My first run through DOS2 I went pure Pyro Fane. He really did wreck shit hard. The extra damage from fully investing in Pyro was totally worth it.
>>
Class doesn't matter, you'll enjoy a good game regardless of which you choose. If you aren't having fun, it isn't the class you picked, it's the game.
Alternatively, just play all of them to a point where you get a real feel of how they play until one grabs you.
>>
>>3845094
I mean there are plenty of otherwise good games with horrible balance where picking the wrong thing can ruin your experience. I don't know what would possess you to say something so obviously wrong.
>>
>>3845096
A genuinely good game wouldn't have horrible balance issues. I don't know what would possess you to gaslight yourself.
>>
>>3845102
Not exactly relevant but the roguelike DCSS lets you have any combination of race and class. If you pick deep elf fighter you are going to have a bad time. This is not in any way a problem.
>>
>>3844866
lolimancer for the seamen bonus
>>
>>3844866
Always a charisma focused ones.
>>
>>3844867
They would if that grown man in a dress who hides at the back swinging a wand around like a girl was casting "Nuke Army"
>>
>>3845102
>A genuinely good game
Anon, you're talking about RPGs, which are by nature complex games. Your generalization just doesn't apply to the genre. More than likely, the player has incorrect expectations going in and that is going to affect outcomes.
>>
>>3844866
If you were in a fantasy world, what kind of character would you want to be?
>>
>>3845235
The rape slave of a matriarchal and all female tribe of orcs
>>
>>3845263
Bard?
>>
>>3845266
Nah something like a white mage would be ideal
>>
When I was younger I'd always pick the rogue class
Nowadays I always pick the two handed warrior, whether greatswords or great hammers is all the same, I just bash stuff with very slow and deliberate movements

That said, playing silksong right now and I'm using the wanderer crest (fast, short strikes) but only because even the slow "classes" are too fast to be of use to me
>>
>>3845263
>matriarchal and all female
What else would an all female tribe be?
>>
>>3845294
They could be ruled by a human male. It's important to state that they would remain in charge
>>
>>3844866
I just pick something that sounds fun and roll with it. I don't really get agonizing over the choice that much; it's just not that important.

>>3845096
RPGs are poorly balanced more often than not, but I disagree with the premise that a poorly-optimized character will ruin the experience. If anything, a lot of the time I find figuring out ways to get things accomplished with a terrible character or how to turn a poor build into something useful more interesting and fun than steamrolling the game with a powerful character.
>>
>>3844866
Play a classless RPG.
Classes are just an outdated relic of the 1970s, along with levelling, dungeon crawling and octohedral dice.
>>
>>3845380
Without classes you just wind up with a boring jack-of-all-trades with no personality.
>>
>>3845381
>you just wind up with a boring jack-of-all-trades
Maybe you do, powergamer
