Better than the original or not? I have the original but never played more than five minutes of it.
>>
>>3846644
It's basically as perfect as a remake can get. Exact same story, just with updated visuals and gameplay. It's a new translation from the original western release, so the lines are different from what people remember. It's supposed to be more accurate to the Japanese, with a more word-for-word approach, but some fans miss the lines from the more thought-for-thought translation that was the original release. It's one of those things where you can't make everyone happy, there's pros and cons to both approaches.

That aside, you're not going to be disappointed.
>>
>>3846646
Alright, thanks!
>>
>>3846647
There's also a handful of lines that have been altered slightly for "modern audiences." None of it is that big a deal, and the lines have been changed in the Japanese version of the game too, they weren't only changed in the localization. It's not really going to impact your enjoyment of the game, but that is there and I would say it's a very minor problem. Other than that though everything seems perfect and exactly what I hoped it would be.
>>
>>3846649
Thats good to know, i'll still give the game a try though

91 on Metacritic. Unironic GOTY contender.
>>
>>3846644
Depends on who you ask. I've never managed to get into Trails because I could never make it past the prologue in Sky FC. Been sitting on several of these games in my collection for years, and I couldn't touch them because of that.

Then I tried the demo of this remake, and now I'm playing the full game proper. Whether it's thanks to the remake, or something else, at least now I can actually start playing Trails.
>>
I already played this a long time ago and forgot it except for the big parts.
I just started yesterday until the first big tutorial and I am thoroughly impressed already.
The little additions they did stands out a lot. Estelle was already charming before, now she's much more charming really.
I love the graphical update and how it looks, retro but modernized if that makes any sense.
>>
9/10 so far. It shows Falcom desperately needs to fire all their current writers, which they probably will given how this game written by 3 people is being received extremely well in 2025, unlike the rest of their garbage games.

>Better than the original or not
As of now i would actually say yes. It is faithful, has a proper non-fanfic translation, good graphics, good turn-based system, you can choose between 3 different OSTs with the original included, panties are still in and Nightmare difficulty is pretty fun. Im like 10 hours in and i love it so far. Probably my personal GOTY.
>>
let me put it this way, is there ANY reason you should play the original vs the remake?
>>
>>3847838
Some people do prefer the translation of the original and think it has more character. Also, some of the terminology in the remake, while it can still be considered correct, is inconsistent with terms used in the rest of the series. People have also pointed out that two very minor NPCs have different names than in the original, similar, but just translated differently. People have pointed out that it's an issue because those characters also appear in future games, so if you play the remake duology and then move onto the original versions of later entries, those characters' names won't be consistent.
>>
>>3847884
lmao sorry i just find that funny
>>
>>3847838
The original looks better.
>>
How is it GungHo fucked up the Grandia remaster so bad but Trails got the AAA treatment?
The camera jumping around so much in battles is a little too much for me but overall they did a great job.
>>
Should i give this try if the orginal bored me too much after 1 hours?
>>
>>3847838
OG with the EVO voice patch has significantly more voice acting and the art style is 10000 times better. Remake's better otherwise.
>>
>>3847939
This is an in-house remake by Falcom. GungHo's just the publisher in the west.
>>
>>3847884
which NPCs
Is it Anton I swear they can't have fucked up Anton
>>
>>3847948
No you should probably go back to watching people scream on tiktok, sounds more your speed.
>>
>>3848147
Armand and Ellie are called Areum and Aria in the remake. Also the Esmelas Tower is now called the Jade Tower, and that one could be a bit of a problem because later games in the series still call it the Esmelas Tower and that could be confusing if you aren't aware of the translation difference.
>>
>>3848155
>Jade Tower
that's kinda gay. Do they call the sepith Jade too instead of Esmelas? That takes a chunk of the flavour out of probably the most important system in the game and the setting - I'm not really a fan of that.

>Armand and Ellie
mmm a little annoying but still pretty small characters at the end of things. Iirc I don't remember them showing up in 3rd, so it's just the cameo in crossbell that's getting impacted there, which isn't like... the worst thing?
>>
>>3848255
Jade Tower is the actual name. The other one is fanfic.
>>
>>3848444
I think I'd prefer consistent terminology in the series over absolute accuracy. Although I guess they'll probably keep remaking games after this so maybe they'll eventually make all the games match up again.
>>
>>3848444
You have to remove the notion of “original” and separate it completely from the discussion of “better” which is what we’re trying to talk about here. It’s a completely different conversation.

(Jade tower isn’t the actual name either, it’s some shit in japanese)
>>
No timeline nonsense from Kai right?
>>
>>3848630
Reception would go form positive to overwhelmingly negative if it had anything to do with nu-Trails. This is a faithful remake, with the caveat that it has a few new quests written by the people who wrote Daybreak and Kai, and the dialogue is absolutely atrocious and serves as a reminder of how bad those games are.
>>
>>3848630
Nah it's an almost completely 1:1 remake with the only changes being to the combat and the addition of a few new quests and some travel dialogue between Estelle and Joshua. As the other guy said though the new stuff clashes with the old because modern Falcom's writers have none of the charm of the original but thankfully it's a very small part of the game.
>>
>>3846644
I think the original offers a more consistent package. The remake has a lot of weird cutscenes that have bad camera/character acting and the environments vary wildly in detail. The combat isn't good in either game, but original is much more "fuck it, move on" when it's not engaging.

Honestly, I'm not sure what would get someone into the remake aside from "it's newer and 3D!" It's the same game.
>>
>>3846646
I feel like a perfect remake would either stay more faithful in presentation and gameplay or be wildly different on purpose to act as a compliment. See Star Ocean 2 Remake and Shadow of the Ninja Remake for examples of both.

The originals localization is why everyone remembers Estelle so fondly. It was superior to the original Japanese script unless you're a diehard weaboo. Also there is no censorship of scenes such pic related. The remake unfortunately removed some gendered remarks and in general feels like MTL. Terminology and names have also been changed. Gameplay is much better though.

Original > Remake

that scene is entirely fanfic though
>>

How does it happen in the original Japanese?
>>
>>3849317
The sentiment of Estelle being displeased at Olivier is clear, even the reaction image is the same. While in the remake it's "Oh so you have that kind of preference? Naruhodo."

"diehard weaboo" is when you don't like when obnoxious infantile writing is forced into a game, I guess?
>>
>>3849311
I think the Xseed version made too many pointless extensions/rewrites and fucked up a few lines, but the overall script is good. More than 3/4ths of lines are 1:1, and a lot of the liberal lines are just moving phrasing around to flow better in English of changing the intensity/focus of a line because Japanese isn't the same as English.

Like, I wouldn't call the made up shit a strength, but the translation is more good than bad. The new translation is mostly bad despite having a higher degree of accuracy. I think the ideal solution would be to borrow Xseed's phrasing for accurate lines and then retranslate the remainder.

Its not quite THAT sterile in the remake. Obviously she looks less hostile but its not just naruhodo, she is shocked. I honestly expected that any kind of reference to the original line would disappear but there is still something.
>>
>>3849421
To be fair the eng dub gave me that impression
>>
>>3849336
>落とし前をつける is a weirdly legal term
Lmao wut? No, that's like a thuggish way of telling someone you'll make them take responsibility for an affront. The localization maintains the tone and intent of that line much better than what is being framed as the more accurate translation.

Every time I see presumably novice Japanese learners make these comparison visuals, I can't help but feel they're just bitter that they have to experience localizations just like the rest of the peasantry, because they'd be going through at a snail's pace from constantly looking things up if they went with the source material instead. And then in an effort to display that they haven't been wasting their time, they end up convincing gullible "diehard weaboos" such as yourself that one of the most beloved localizations in the JRPG space is actually bad.
>>

I only talked about the localization... other than that, it's a comfy, charming little game you probably won't dislike if you like JRPGs. I think I prefer the remake a bit in terms of gameplay, and although it doesn't have quite as much soul to it, it's still a comfy, very pretty, overall good game

I played the demos of all trails games and disliked them all. Shit level design, atrocious va and non existent story. (content full with ot holes and filler isn't a story)
Is this something for me? I did like the combat mechanics.
>>
>>3850385
The first Trails game is character driven more than it's plot driven, at least until later in the game. The pace is definitely slow, and it's not like there's a lot of twists and turns. You have to be willing to go with it, to enjoy the vibe, and get to know the characters. I absolutely love the game, but you just have to know what it is and be okay with it. It's not a crazy story like Metaphor ReFantazio where you'll always be excited to find out what happens next in this story. It's a chill JRPG that rewards patience. And I think if you play the game to the end, you'll be very interested in playing the sequel.
>>
>>3850371
Super weird, this is the first I've heard of it. Shame I don't know how to fix it.

>>
>>3850390
>It's a chill JRPG
That's fine with me, even its not too much sentiment and anime drama. The game I found worst was the one that starts in town with a male and female character. The guy has blue hair iirc. Cold steel? I don't remember.
>>
>>3850396
The Cold Steel games are bit more anime than the older games. Trails in the Sky does feel like anime still, but not the more cringe side of anime in my opinion. I grew to love Estelle and Joshua by the end, and I became very invested in their story. I'm by no means a weeb if that helps any.
>>
>>3850399
Ye, I think I get it. Felt like they especially went full emotion on the one I played. The other entries weren't as bad in that regard.
What's the game about, why are the guys in regular clothes so super strong? Is it like ff, teen friends save the world?
>>
>>3850445
Estelle and Joshua were raised by Cassius Bright, "the Devine Blade", who is known all over for his fighting skills. In the game, they join the Bracer Guild, a non-governmental mercenary guild that takes on jobs to help people. It gets bigger than that, but it starts out very small, like you'll be going to a farm to clear out monsters or whatever. There's obviously more to it than that, and it evolves into such a grand series, but the beginnings are so small and humble.
>>
>>3850449
Pretty cool start. Stereotypical? Sure. Sounds good, I like it so far.
>>
>>3850454
There is sort of a nostalgic feeling to it, and kind of wholesome too. I really like the game and the series as a whole. I hope you'll give it a shot and see if you like it.
>>
>>3850457
I think I will. How long is it?
>>
>>3850466
It depends, because a lot of people love talking to every NPC. The hallmark of the Trails series is that almost every NPC in the game has a name, and even has their own story that will advance as you advance throughout the adventure. It's totally optional, but a lot of people get a kick out of that. I haven't finished the remake myself yet, but for the original game if you do the story and a lot of the side quests it'll probably be maybe 40 hours. The remake might be a little bit longer because it has voice acting so you won't be clicking through as fast.
>>
>>3850468
>own story that will advance as you advance throughout the adventure
Hard to believe. That would be the only rpg that does it. If the npc stories are interesting, why not? Just talk to them (multiple times)?
>va
Idk, often enough very bad.
>40 hours
Really? Thought they are long af. Ng+? The game has no classes, but a sphere grid like ffx, right?
>>
>>3850469
Might be more like 50 depending on your how you play. I can't remember exactly how long it took me to beat the original but it's definitely shorter than something like Persona 5.

The NPC stories are nothing too intricate. It's just extra world building. Like there's a guy who likes a girl, and you can check in on him after a story beat and see how his love quest is advancing. It's totally skippable, but it's cool it's in there.

The spheres you've seen aren't like a sphere grid. The orbment system is kind of like materia in Final Fantasy. You can slot in different quartz to increase stats and give your characters different magic abilities. The actual leveling up is traditional.
>>
>>3850474
Sounds good enough to me. That's a defining trope in jrpg and I like it. AFAIK yakuza games have such substories all the time.
>>
>>3850499
Yakuza's side stories are really little side missions where you perform tasks and beat up guys for rewards. Trails does have side quests, but the NPCs whose stories you can follow is just a little touch that you can completely avoid if you want, but a lot of Trails fans really appreciate that it's there.

But anyway, it's a really high quality game, so I hope you like it.
>>
>>3850501
Really? Literally no side quests? Very interesting. Still 60h to beat, huh.
Is there new game plus?
>>
>>3850527
No no. There's side quests, but the thing I described about every NPC having a name and a story doesn't lead to any side quests. It's just an extra thing. Side stories in Yakuza games are actual side quests.
>>
>>3850370

I'm gonna have to resist the temptation of immediately jumping to SC after I finish though, since I never played that game and I know it's getting a remake.
>>
>>3850642
You definitely should resist the temptation, because not only is the second remake coming out soon, but in the original versions, and I assume in the remakes as well, the second game will read your finished save data from the first game, and it'll know what side quests you did in the first game, and there might be some extra dialogue when you meet those characters again in the second game.

>>
>>3849421
Dammit, the new graphics make Estelle nowhere near as expressive as she was in the original. She had so many different expressions for her dialogue back then.
>>
>>3850545
Do the games have replay value? Postgame?
>>
>>3850652
The original had new game plus but I never tried it out. I mean the primary draw of these games really is the story, so if you're going to replay it, it would probably be to see the story again or maybe do side quests that you missed. There's no postgame, the story ends and the credits roll. The structure of the game doesn't really lend itself to a postgame. Also the side quests are usually missable, they'll expire if you advance past certain points in the main story. These games are all about the story and the world and that's why a lot of people love them.
>>
>>3850654
Linearity isn't bad per se. If it aids the story, I favour it, as open world are all empty.

Finally made it to chapter 3. I called the chapter 2 culprit right away but didn't expect things to escalate that much. What a ride.

Grim. Do Trails games just not do well on PC?
>>
>>3851140
bro
are you retarded

Welcome to jrpgs that aren't final fantasy or Persona 5. This is a niche board
>>
>>3851055
Now show the sexy tita outfit
>>
>>3851147
sadly this is the reality of jrpgs on pc
>>
>>3851140
Apparently on the asian side of steam it peaked at 14k. And I heard that this is the best numbers Trails game has ever seen but I couldn't verify that.
>>
>>3851140
Game is very slow and there's already been a bunch of good JRPGs recent. It's just not interesting enough to make me want to play a third.
>>
>>3851175
Yes, the combined peak was just above 19k. It was hugely successful on PC. The western number is also twice as high as the second-highest peak in the series.
>>
>>3851175
wait. all-time peak figure is not global?
>>
>>3851198
>JRPGs recent.
Like what? E33?
>>
>>3851204
Falcom's retarded. They have 2 different localizers, so there's 2 different versions. One for non-JP Asia, one for Japan and the west. The combined count is nearly 20k concurrent.
>>
>>3851055
where can I find this?
>>
>>3851208
There's an explanation behind this arrangement, though. Clouded Leopard Entertainment was founded by ex-Sony of Asia staff, who localized the Cold Steel titles for Falcom back in the day. Meanwhile, western publishing became a bidding war between various publishers in the mid-10s. Prior to that, it was mostly XSeed handling Falcom's stuff - largely cause no other small publisher cared enough.
>>
honest question because honestly I've been trying out a lot of games recently and I'm starting to get burnt out because of this but how is trails community? any known schizos?
>>
>>3851358
on 4chan? Like 80% schizos.
I wouldn't talk about the games here.
>>
>>3851358
Oh, it's got plenty of schizos - especially on here. Stay away from any and all localization discussions. Stage 4 leukemia is less cancerous than that shit.

How did they handle the main villain in the remake? I think his name was Richard? In the original I remember one of the last scenes the main women of the cast confronted him and basically said he was a misogynist. It stuck out because of how out of left field it was and I always wondered if that was translator changes or true to the OG script.

i guess this board and thread is niche enough to keep normalfags at a minimum, so go to loverslab. you have to register though.

They really need to remake this one at least so that the entire series could be playable on PS5. I know they're all on Steam and you can run them on a modern laptop, but not everybody wants to play games on a PC. Having the entire series playable on one console would be great.

I am not registering, those accountwall faggots need to KTS (but I have scooped out a nice 4K textures mod at nexusmods)

You're misremembering something, Richards second in command is a woman. There is a scene where the Queen of Liberl calls his way of thinking outdated saying he views women in power as a sign of weakness. But then you realize Richard was right about everything and the series goes on to prove him right.
>>
>>3851468
you complain about registering on a modding site but have an account on nexus? i will never spoonfeed again. this is what you get for wanting to help an anon getting some better mods.

People are telling you about the anti-fans, but Trails threads are also overrun with hardcore brand warriors who throw a shitfit if you criticize damn near anything, as well as company-defenders for *each* company involved with the series. It's a mess. You can't be positive OR negative, you'll get screamed at either way.
>>
>>3851575
pretty much. those threads both on /v/ and /vg/ are just 99% infighting. it does not matter about what. it is always just fight fight fight fight. and if there is five minutes of clarity, some schizo starts calling everyone pedos again and fighting continues. terminally online anons might be worse off than social media addicts.

I'm glad I'm having a good experience with the games. I just watched a YouTube video of a guy raving about the series, and he seemed so enthusiastic about it that I decided to check it out. I don't interact with "the community" at all. I'm just going through the games and loving them very much.
>>
>>3851647
I ended up disliking most of them, but I liked a couple a lot. I'd love to actually talk about what does and doesn't work, but anyone who cares enough to have that discussion is usually just not open to it.

It really just comes down to stuff like "I wish Sky 1 was written a bit differently" and "I think Daybreak 2 is funny and like the combat." Not interesting on its own, I'd just like to chime in without getting boo'd.
>>
>>3851697
What don't you enjoy about Sky 1's story?
>>
>>3851697
I think it feels like a first draft. There's a lot of parts where it writes itself in circles to get to what it wants to do when it could cut the nonsense. There's stuff it treats like big reveals that really aren't even if you were a small child that I think handling a bit differently would alleviate.

An easy example is the game trying to get Estelle and Joshua to meet Morgan. They keep over explaining all this stuff and tying themselves into knots to explain why Schera isn't coming but then is and this and that, and it's kind of messy?

Just having the Sky Pirates leave Josette behind in the prologue when they escape makes everything smoother. Gives Schera a reason to head to Bose as well (transporting her to the prison). Gives Schera a better chance to show off how cool and based she is *and* to set up the shadowy agents helping the Capuas out (helping Josette escape in transit). Gives Morgan a much simpler initial reason to be furious at the Bracers before we learn he's more complicated than that. Etc.

Just a lot of places where the broad strokes can be tightened up so the events don't get as bogged down in minutiae. Make the meaningful details more meaningful. Maribel's "ah, you will help me with my political espionage" bit is just clunky as fuck and isn't a great way to convey her smooth operations as a discerning business woman. Game's full of stuff like that.
>>
>>3851709
I think all your ideas wouldn't improve anything, but like - this is where you go and write your fanfic anon.
>>
>>3846644
I'm playing it just for the nostalgia factor since they recreated most of the maps faithfully.
Can't wait for the flying city in SC remake.
>>
>>3851762
I hope they make the final boss in SC easier. It must've taken me half an hour to beat his last phase, and I didn't even die. Just took me forever to whittle down his health.
>>
>>3851709

>>3851702
>>
>>3851723
This is exactly why I hate trying to give examples of writing problems in games. If you explain the issue but don't make up an example of how to address it, you get heckled to make one. If you make one, you get
>"Uhm, that's shit"
with no attempt to engage with the actual point being made.
>>
>>3851709
But they already have a good reason to go to Bose: The bracer training.
And Morgan being furious at Bracer's by default is part of his character. Giving him a reason to hate Estelle and Joshua specifically would undermine that. Just like how leaving behind Josette would undermine the Sky Pirates' writing cause then they wouldn't work as tightly knit family taking care of each other.
>>
>>3846644
Fun and exciting fact
Josette in her disguise wears white panties (with a bow!) but in her sky pirate outfit instead wears black panties!

Just finished it. Did anybody catch all the hints about Alba the first time they played? They give a pretty big one at the first tower with Joshua getting a headache, but the game is so long that it's so easy to forget that.

Now I'm having the exact same reaction I had when I beat it on PSP, except now I can immediately jump to the sequel, or wait again for the remake. Will the OG SC be tough to play if I'm used to all the remake additions?
>>
Every time I ask if some of the shit design from the original is still present I get ignored so I'm just going to assume the game is still full of shit design and a new coat of paint isn't going to fix that.
>>
>>3852641
What about crossdressing Joshua? Can I use that for the rest of the game?
>>
>>3852738
I would highly recommend waiting for the remake. Yes there's the remake additions, but also the second game reads your save data from the first game, and remembers what side quests you did, and there's some NPC dialogue that will be different when they remember you helped them out in the first game.
>>
>>3852767
Yeah I know about that. I can easily just download a completed save file from the OG and use it for SC if I can't wait
I did everything I could on Remake, and all I missed was 2 friggin chests somewhere, 2 early game enemies, and the last money/battle achievements.
>>
>>3852809
I see. Well I'd still wait for the remake because Falcom churns these games out really quickly. If you have to wait longer than a year I'd be shocked. I don't think it would feel right to go from a brand new game to a sprite based game that's supposed to be the climactic sequel.
>>
>>3852759
No. Everything else is unlocked but that. You get the bathrobe outfits for both and the maid outfit for Estelle after beating the game.
>>
How's the NG+ with raised enemy levels?
Feels like you are still way too strong for that to matter, so it's more about the fights not ending in 1 turn.
>>
>>3852924
It should start getting tough later in the game.
>>
>>3852936
Hope so. Math says that the further I get, the bigger the effects of Nightmare multiplier will be, but by endgame your characters are so busted that I only expect the final boss to be challenging with the perma rage at half health.
>>
>>3846644
I used to love these games but I took a break and played other stuff and then came back and I couldn't stand them. It's like everything about them is just designed to waste as much of your time as humanly possible.

They take 2, 3, sometimes even 4 games to tell a story any other JRPG could manage in 1. And the characters and the world arent actually deep enough to compensate for this. The worldbuilding of Trails is just as generic and puddle deep as 98% of JRPGs is but theres just a lot of games so people get tricked into thinking it isn't. The characters are also just thin collections of anime tropes with no real depth, except they take 400 hours to have their "epiphany moment" where their character does a complete 180 instead of 20 like other JRPGs.

The combat has potential but Falcom are extremely lazy devs who don't actually utilize any of it at all so it ends up being completely brainless. The level and world design is also the dictionary definition of the bare minimum.

The series is just slop and while I do sort of have fond memories of my time with it I can't really in good conscience call it a good series anymore.
>>
>>3852987
>The combat has potential
Dunno about you, but shit like the delay loops, watching the enemy do a fancy S-craft animation only for GUARD to pop up, and suddenly getting 4 turns when I had only one queued originally never fails to make me smile.

I moved on to SC and I'm struggling. Gonna take a bit for me to adjust to the lack of QOL additions. Might use a spoiler free guide just to not miss sidequests and items.

If you are thinking about beating the prologue on Nightmare, think again. It's possible but requires either FC carry-overs or grinding.

Also it's a 90s anime thing, I had seen this kind of "play where everyone is crossdressing" from 3 different shows.

I was going to play through the original games after I'm done with the 1st Chapter remake. It'll give me a more objective view of what the remake did right and wrong.

Plus, I've got nothing else to play except old games until the SC remake, so might as well.
>>
Help, I'm playing SC and just reached chapter 3. Who should I use in my party? I hate decisions like this because it takes me forever to decide. I loved how FC forced party members in until the finale, now I have to choose between Zane, Tita, Khloe, and Olivier and I'm spiraling.

Just finished the remake, my first Trails game. Really enjoyed it, the ending is a kick in the teeth in a good way, I hope that the sequel comes out soon.
A detail I liked though was that practically everyone was attractive, unless they were meant to be old or actually ugly. Practically every girl has big bouncy boobs. It was so refreshing.

Well I told a little lie there, I HAVE played the original for around ten hours before dropping off. Not because it was bad necessarily, but the remake's combat felt better to me personally. Similarly I am of the type that hates skipping out on interesting secrets so the remake's system of actually showing these things on the map was better for me. In general I'm all for the QoL stuff the remake has.
It is a shame that the writing wasn't quite as spicy as the original, but I will rather have a translation that is closer to the original japanese just in general. I'm not retarded enough to call the original version's translation "fanfic" like some might say, it's just different.
And I know that this post will just make you butthurt or something and I do apologize for that, but I can't with good conscience call the remake "inferior". At the very worst it is a sidegrade to the original, depending on the person.

the writing is closer to the original...until you reach scenes that Falcom censored themselves. And in general the games dialogue feels like MTL when you compare it to the original localization. In many scenes.

I genuinely believe it's a tragedy that people have to listen to Liberl being pronounced as LIBERAL and not seeing Estelle call Olivier a faggot. I encourage you to play SC, I know a person that did jump from the remake to SC and was pleasantly surprised.

SC's remake from the few screencaps I saw already made Estelle wear spats in her second outfit when she canonically wore a skirt, and there are even jokes about her showing off her goods by accident in that game. SC remake will be even less faithful than 1st, you have been warned.

also no chest messages for you either.
