It's astonishing how a series exclusively made up of mid games has been able to last that long
>>3850211I don't see how you are surprised, from what I can tell, both the Japanese and weaboos are not picky and are hyperconsumers.
>>3850211There's comfort in mediocrity as long as it ticks enough boxes.
There is a market for AA jrpgs that is almost lost these days.
>>3850263Even if they are, who would even have time to play all this shit?
>>3850340Can you explain what is the difference between a "AA jrpg" and a top jrpg?Is it just the flashy cutscenes?
>>3850211>mid gamesApparently you fail to grasp the core cincept:When producing media, no one expects a genius stroke. On the contrary, it would likely be contra productive. The best thing for any producer is to avoid as many pitfalls as possible. The result without genius will be mid, but mid is perfect for the brainless consoomer.Product design philosophy aside, which entries are nice? Haven't played the series, just watched a few seconds of walkthroughs. I'm going to buy versalai or what's it called, what else is OK? P2 remaster are fine with me.
>>3850369Overall production value: interesting mechanics, high quality sound design, va, qol and ui are up to date and much more.
>>3850376Which of these categories does Tales lag behind on?
>>3850381Compared to what? Ff7r? Everything. Compared to chines solo dev jrpg for 99 cents on steam? Nothing.I dislike the aaa, aa and so on categories. They have nothing to do with games. They started when vidya managers told banks that their proposed games were a, aa, aaa... Tier investments. Now you understand what idiots mean when they tell the world they developed an aaaa game.
I just realised Velvet isn't just a brocon and a shotacon but she also ate her sister
>>3850211does it really count when its been dead for 1/5th of 25 years
>>3850344People with lots of time to kill. What a weird question.
>>3850408Or with lots of patience. Play just a little while every day, eventually you can go through any series even if it takes months and months. (Playing through Trails with 1 hour a day would probably take well over a year, can't speak for Tales)
>>3850485300 hours? Iirc my longest playthrough was divinity os 2. Took me nearly 160 hours, and I started to rush the game mid act 3.
>>3850406Tales of started in 96 so we're technically closer to 30 years now
>>3850405I didn't beat the game, but I got very far and don't remember anything about a 3rd family member. I stopped at some volcano area when I couldn't grind for some crating materials due to their low drop rate.
>>3850211Less Abyss shitposts this time please
>>3850600Remember the main premise of the game, where her brother-in-law sacrifices her brother in order to get revenge on the daemons that killed his wife (Velvet's sister) and "save the world"?
Ednanal
>>3850485I think if you have that little time to play a game, you'd spend it on something better. No, Tales of fans are looking to kill vast amounts of free time.

>>3850770Not a single good game in the top 10. Damn.
The only time I've ever cried playing a video game was during one of Berseria's skits of all things, where Velvet and Eizen are talking about flowers.
Tales of Vesparia was almost great. But seriously lacked edge and the characters didn't bond super well. I loved aspects of the game thought. It's like a 8.5 for an RPG. It's just missing like, something to tie it all together. A reason for caring about any of it. Maybe it's missing a bit of immersion, felt a little too by the numbers. But above average by all means.
>>3850816t. crybaby exorcist
>>3850211As a teen I played Eternia, then Symphonia years later and I thought I loved the series. Most of the other games I've dropped, og Destiny, Legendia, Vesperia. Phantasia remake was fucking good tho.
>>3850892>Phantasia remake was fucking good tho. There's like 4 or 5 Phantasia remakes lol.
>>3850821is this post machine generated
Considering how long Atlus or Falcom exist by now, mediocre shit lasting years is not surprising at all
>>3850770Berseria has a trash battle system
>>3850992No
>>3850211Anon I think you are autistic, like you seriously can't coomprehend the fact that other people have a different taste and might enjoy things that you didn't like? Why is it such a common occurence on this board, some fag posts a beloved and popular jrpg like persona 5 or a series and asks what's the appeal or something. It's pointless to even participate and elaborate one my point of view if you have been essentially filtered. It's just not for (You), that's all, go and play the countless other games available to you, making such a thread or replying to one is an even bigger waste of time than actually playing ""mid"" games.
>>3851141Isn't this the case with ignorant (let's say) people everywhere?
>>3850369Put it simply its about budget. But I would argue that most JRPGs are basically AA or less budget wise. The only AAA JRPG left is Final Fantasy.
>>3850211You could honestly say that about any of the long running jrpg series. Anything 10 games + is not immune
>>3851241Left? FF was the only AAA JRPG outside of occasional one-offs like Legend of Dragoon or Lost Odyssey, which typically required direct financial backing from a console manufacturer. The genre has almost always been AA in nature for most of its major franchises. This is the reason the genre went into decline at the onset of HD. The rise in costs disproportionately affected Japanese developers, who had a lot less resources to leverage compared to their Western counterpoints. As such, most publishers had to slim down their AA offerings to funnel more and more into their AAA endeavors. Capcom needed more for Resident Evil, so there goes Breath of Fire (among others like Mega Man). Konami needed more for Metal Gear, so bye bye Suikoden (and eventually everything else they made, including Metal Gear). Meanwhile the annual-ish franchises like Atelier and Trails were single-A slop that could carry on regardless of what the rest of the industry was doing, so that's why they were some of the only notable releases for part of the 00s and 10s. The last decade has increasingly seen the reemergence of AA gaming, which is in part why the genre has been more prevalent after a dark age of 2006-2015. Tales was originally one of the few AA JRPGs to endure the hard times, mostly because Bamco was a publisher with a shit ton of cash to throw around as the EA of Japan (yearly licensed anime games being the Japanese equivalent to yearly licensed sports games).
>>3851241>The only AAA JRPG left is Final FantasyPokemon of course. Though you'd be hard pressed to tell from looking at screenshots. Kingdom Hearts, if you count that separately from FF. A lot of Atlus' stuff could be considered in he same group as well - the persona games and metaphor re:fantazio. I would say Yakuza at this point too. there's a couple.
>>3851357Isn't aaa above 50 million usd dev cost?
>>3851374where did you pull that arbitrary number from
>>3851449NTA but that's about what FF7 cost. That would be well north of 100 megadollars, today.

>>3850344The tales series is 17 games. I've played way more than 17 games in my lifetime. Why are you so incredulous?
>>3852411she's so cool
>>3851260No most of these series have a few bangers in an ocean of mediocre to mid games. Tales of is just mid game upon mid gameThere's Atelier which might fit the biml but who take Atelier seriously
>>3852572Yeah already preordered. I hope we'll get a laphi to get her company and for me to glue
>>3850211I'm planning to buy versaria, symphonia remaster and bersaria. Yes or no?
>>3850211Better that than becoming soulless like most of the competition though. Like, have you seen what Star Ocean has become? or that Valkyrie Elysium thing they tried to pass as a new Valkyrie Profile game? Compared to that remaining classic is absolutely the right choice and even changing in the direction Arise did can not be seen as an entirely bad move (even though we should condemn games that abandon their souls)
>>3852607But Berseria and Arise did exactly that. They're shadows of the series' former self that barely resemble the older games at this point. Especially for Arise the art direction was the only good part about it.
>>3852605>berseriayes
>>3852611Don´t get me wrong, i agree, i´m just saying that in the other examples the departure of the soul feels more aggressive. Perhaps because the identity of older games was somewhat more unique. All we have left now is DQ and, let´s face it, without Toriyama that one is going to the gutter too.
>>3852619Toriyama only provided the art. I think they can manage that without him. They just need a guy who can provide similarly goofy designs. And I think Tales' identity has been stripped away just as aggressively. Removing the LMBS and coop was too much.
POW HAMMER
I wish we could get a new 2D Tales game. I like the 3D titles, but it hurts when you play something like Eternia, or even things like FFIV in other series, where you loved the earlier games/format, but oh well, too bad, I guess, because we've "evolved" and moved past it forever. Hope you enjoy the new style that plays absolutely nothing like it.
>>3852667>could get a new 2D Tales gameNo dev can do 2d anymore. They lack skill for sprites, ambient design and a fun combat.Best they can do is that nauseating 2.5 like the star ocean remakes or metroidvania.
Oh wait the Tales gachas are all dead, no more Halloween costumes.

Why was this part of the story so... disjointed? The cutscenes went back and forth between a seahaven presumably right after the destruction of the Zenethra, and the storage shed at Hamil, with bits from a visit to Nia Khera throgn in the middle.Anyway, it feels like I'm slowly approaching the end of Jude's path. Probably have another 1/3 of content to go or something like that? There was a journey across Rashugal, a journey across Auj Oule, and now we're going to Elympios for the grand finale?Whatever the case, I'm thinking of taking a break and leaving Milla's path for the remaster.
>>3853643>Milla's path for the remasterIt's shorter than Jude's anyway.
>>3853299I saw the demo they had at Rappig Crossing and they inserted all of Phantasian production text in the game already, with their permission. Most of the hacking is done only missing subtitles for skits. Menu are all translated as well. The only thing that needs to be done they said is the new events they added in TOPX. They're aiming for a release for the anniversary but it might be delayed.
>>3853643I love Xillia's aesthetics
>>3853715Fixed
>>3853719"fixed" my ass
>>3853719I'll keep playing in the darkness to avoid censored sloppa till the end of time.
>>3853744Unless you're playing the JP version, you're playing censored "sloppa" regardless.
>>3853746>More censorship is good because you were playing on slight censorship!
>>3853747Wrong, my point is that all censorship is bad, and pretending like you're "winning" over censorship by playing a censored version is fucking stupid.
>>3853750I am not giving them any money. So yes, i am winning. I had no other alternatives to play the game when i played it on my ps3.
>>3853697Hype, so there's a solid chance that we'll get it before 2027. That's honestly great. I can wait.I'm just glad we'll actually get it.
>>3853688I thought most of it would be the same.I imagined it covers most of the same content you go through as Jude in the parts where the party is together, and the only original things are stuff like the Fort Gandala infiltration, her stay at Sharilton after the injury and things like that. And I guess whatever happens after she kills herself at the Zenethra, assuming she actually is dead, which I'll find out hopefully later tonight..
I was checking my quest list before continuing with the story, and...>#47 The History of Auj Oule (VERY MISSABLE, must complete part 1-4 before finishing Chapter 2, and must complete part 5 before boarding the Zenethra)Fuck me I guess.I didn't go to the colisseum right after Part 3, and I'm past the Zenethra raid now, so yeah.I wonder if the remaster will do anything about missable quests. Throwing a note saying that a quest can be missed if you have't completed it before X or Y events or something of that sort.
>>3853981Incredibly soulless.
Hm. I am mildly confused. This implies... what, that Jude had an aunt or uncle who lived and died in Elympios? It couldn't be some sort of AU Jude or an AU version of either of his parents, right?Because Elympios and what is now known as Rieze Maxia used to be 1 same world.Unless it was 1 same world where parallel versions of people lived together...? That sounds kind of silly to me.I'm curious to see where this goes and what'll happen here.
>>3853984Shouldn't you have saved that for the remaster?
So is spamming jump attack in Phantasia just unstoppable? Lmao?
I hope Xillia remaster will be using Denuvo because that would be funny
>>3854100Nope.
>>3854120It really wouldn't be. It would just be shitty.>>3854121Whatever you say then I guess.Xillia is far more soulful than the turd that is Arise and looks identical to the rest of the PS2/PS3 games sans Vesperia ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>3854126Nope its funny because this dead series will even be deader without the support of poorfags and 3rd worlder

>>3854146
>>3850211Its incredibly just how "its there" energy this series has.Like no game is considered a relevant entry for the genre.Like it doesn't have a relevancy era like FF does. Also doesn't have a truly generational game that stands above the genre like ATLUS has with Persona.Vesperia and Symphonia which stood out as the rare jrpg on the system (360/Gamecube).For the longest time its only rival has been Star Ocean, another midcarder in the genre. So on the top you have FF, Persona, From Soft.In the middle Tales, Atelier, Star Ocean. On the bottom Idea Factory stuff. So Tales has mostly being a tide me over franchise for the real games people look forward to. Not the bottom of the barrel but not the best of the genre. Also doesn't help that it lost its appeal as THE action rpg option in a sea of turn based games. Now action rpgs became the standard so Tales is more of a run of the mill in the genre.
>>3854263You could just play games you enjoy instead of the ones that get social media clout. I'd take almost any Tales game over any Persona game in a heartbeat.
>>3854263>relevant entry for the genre>relevancy>generational game>From SoftGoddamn, I pity you kids.
>>3854263>Like no game is considered a relevant entry for the genre.Pretty sure Symphonia is, for better or worse.>Like it doesn't have a relevancy era like FF does. The PS3 era easily.>Also doesn't have a truly generational game that stands above the genre like ATLUS has with Persona.ATLUS specfically went out of their way and transformed Persona with the purpose of standing out. I don't think this needs an explanation, the transition from P2-2 and P3 is extremely obvious and not subtle whatsoever, so.Why do you care about any of this anyway?I rather focus on playing games that I find fun and on having fun with them desu.
>>3854480I think a symptom of internet oversocialization is being so influenced by the current discourse that you get uncomfortable breaking away from it, so when you look at a series that's mostly irrelevant in the mainstream like Tales it makes you anxious and feel culturally isolated, I've felt like that with some games before but I also recognize that it's a highly irrational thought
For Vesperia's PC port, I guess there's no way to get around increased load times if you use Nvidia CP/NA-enforced or Special-K-finagled VSync.I'm tempted to just emulate it.Never thought I'd take stuttering over increased load times, but here I am.
They've really been pumping out the games on Steam. Just checked and there are now 5 Tales games I have yet to play. As a former Symphonia kiddie it's really crazy to find myself in this situation. Still shocked at no Abyss though.
>>3854849I don't know if I'd call 5 games in the last 9 years "pumping them out"
>>3854854Ok they've been shitting them out is that better
>>3854858I hope you're shitting more frequently than that. All I'm saying is that their extremely slow development has been a sore spot in the fanbase, so seeing someone say they're "pumping out games" is weird.
>>3854861Yeah I'm still trying to get through Symphonia since they made the 100% completely cruel and requires like 5 playthroughs so while I wasn't looking the Tales backlog built up on me
Playing Arise DLC since i wanna finish my backlog before Xillia Remaster. Playing it again after years coming from Graces is... something. The moves and animations feel too long and awkward, playing Law after Sophie feels so painful.I wonder if it's possible for the next game to be a mix of>Arise graphics and moveset>Berseria animations and movementAlongside shit like guarding, enemies can be staggered, etc. because we all now classic LMBS is gone for good so i guess a mix of the positives between Arise and Berseria can be good enough. Also shit man Shionne is so fucking beautiful.
>>3854849With Xillia being next, there's no way they don't do Xillia 2 after it. And at that point, I'd be amazed if they don't go with Abyss. It's one of the most beloved games in the franchise. It's the only one left of the "Symphonia, Abyss, Vesperia" trifecta of games that most people always claim to be the best.People have been asking for it for years and make themselves heard every time there's an announcement. The game's director has been teasing stuff for like a year and a half now.I just hope it's a good port akin to Vesperia and Graces. I'll kill myself if it's like Symphonia's.
Tales is just not tales without its Token Loli
What if it's Abyss Remake
>>3854977>Anise will get censored No thanks.
>>3854977if it gets remake, I hope the Alkzeruith bit is redone so the scene of the "party dogpiling Luke into taking accountability for being tricked into blowing up while EVERYONE is trying to comprehend is going on" is done better

>>3855130>with the Symphonia 1 cast often times acting oocto be fair the "evil Lloyd" thing was fake.the only person who seemed to be the same between both games was Zelos but sadly he is a gigantic piece of shit in both games. Hell, he saves a badguy from dying in the sequel

I've only played Abyss, and I actually just started replaying it now despite me hardly replaying games because of me missing it. The cinematography, the UI, the cel-shaded artstyle, the unique plot about a fully prophesised future and the deep multiplayer combat are decidedly NOT mid. In terms of the actual combat mechanics, it varies a lot game by game (xillia is messy for example because of the links mechanic). You sorta have to accept that your fight camera is going to be fucked if you want to try multiplayer.
>>3857036In english? PS1, for now at least (see >>3853697).>and where can I play it?Any PS1 emulator for your platform of choice.
>>3853719>>3855326Did you reduce the brightness or the game was like that? I emulated, maybe the darkness filter was not as strong there.
>>3857282RPCS3 has a hack to fix it, the original Xillia games are at like 70% normal brightness
>>3857282>Did you reduce the brightness or the game was like that? The latter. The PS3 version has this weird low brightness effect that is thankfully getting removed in the remaster. There's a reshade config to fix it in the rpcs3 wiki, but I could notice a performance hit so I don't use it.

People often say Tales are generic but honestly I find them less so than games like Dragon Quest or the myriad of "literal who" series like Trails or Valkyrie or what else. Some forget that no other JRPG series will ever reach Final Fantasy status. Even Persona is seen more as a romance simulator than anything else. Like say what you will but I like to look at things positively, and Phantasia is a classic, Eternia is one of the most fun JRPGs you can ever play in the PS1, Symphonia is the quintessential early 2000s 3D JRPG warts and all, Abyss I genuinely find to be one of the best games in the genre (yes, even with the lategame backtracking). Even Vesperia with its Microsoft-backed giant world and plethora of side content, or Graces battle autism, or Xillia's more cinematic approach to mirror the sensibilities of the more tame seventh gen... I don't know, I find myself visiting this general weekly and wishing more of the sidegames were translated because Tales really *is* unique. Now, if only Namco realized it too...
