I played Final Fantasy 7 OG for PS1 a couple years ago and it became my favorite game of all time, and trust me, I've played lots of non-JRPG games. It was the first JRPG I completed and woke up itching to play more of and I attribute that to the narrative. It could have been a best-selling book, and I think that's the strength of JRPGs: the story.Got anymore?
>>3851404Yeah, go play 4, 5, 6, then Tactics, then 8, skip 9, play 10, and then you’re done.
>>3851407Don't skip IX, retard take. IX is fantastic. I never finished VIII nor X. IV, V, and VI are all solid as fuck though. VIII and X are probably good I just never happened to take to either but I will go restart them and play them through to completion at some juncture.
>>3851404>I attribute that to the narrative. It could have been a best-selling book, and I think that's the strength of JRPGs: the story.FF 7 and 10 are my favorites.I enjoyed 8 too. If the themes and setting hits, it hits. 9 seemed fantastic from what I played, but it wasn't what I was looking for at the time.
>>3851404Definitely hit up all the other mainline FFs—all the better if you do them in order so you can appreciate the progression of things and how much the SNES era built up to PS1. You can probably skip the NES era entirely. Grandia 1&2 are great. Skies of Arcadia is charming as fuck. Chrono Trigger is obviously pretty evergreen and worth a shot.>>3851533>Don't skip IX, retard take. IX is fantastic. It's popular to shit on IX lately because it's "slow" or something. Really just seems like a cope from FFVIII fags who are sick of their game being acknowledged as the objective worst of the "classic" era.
>>3851622>It's popular to shit on IX lately because it's "slow" or something. It's always been popular to shit on IX (And VIII, which is what you're trying to do in your deflection).Yes, the combat and the loading screens are atrociously slow by today's standards, even at the time of its release it was slow, unfortunately that's a symptom of the era and the hardware it ran on, might as well be complaining about the low resolution sprites of the NES era. But narratively speaking, IX is the weakest of the 'classic' era. For the first half of the game the story is shallow and ham-fisted with the worst railroading of the series until XIII came about.Despite it's shortcomings it's still a great game, and just like >>3851537 said about 8:>If the themes and setting hits, it hits.OP, Ignore >>3851407Don't skip IX, it's ok to drop it but you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't give it a chance.
>>3851404have you played Xenogears yet?
>>3851778This. Other FFs are good as well, but Xenogears and Final Fantasy Tactics are amazing. Keep in mind that Xenogears specifically has some issues that everyone already discussed (disc 2 is rushed) but if you play for the story they're absolutely worth it.
>>3851778Xenogears gameplay sucks so bad
>>3851754>the first half of the game the story is shallow and ham-fisted with the worst railroading of the series until XIII came about.I partially disagree, the first couple of acts are well written, but yeah, it railroads hard and I can see why that would be offputting. It gets fun once the world opens up but by then you're either invested(/playing on sunk costs) or drop it because it's the same time the plot turns afoot, which questions the point of all the inital railroading.
>>3851622>It's popular to shit on IX lately because it's "slow" or something. It is slow. But you shouldn't skip it.
