Is it merely "babby's first JRPG"? Or is it something deeper?
>>
>>3851791
There is something really unnerving about this series, I can't put it into words. It's as though something really sinister is at play in this series and we aren't privy to it.
>>
>>3851818
meds now.
>>
>>3851818
Well yes. Disney's entire "follow your heart" schtick is a quite intentional subversion of the Christian morals of the era the company was founded. Man's heart is actually deeply wicked and deceptive.

And of course virtually every JRPG, including Final Fantasy, is about killing an evil god.

I 100% believe the game has subversive occult elements and I'm actually replaying it as we speak. Love me some gummi ship buildan.

Okay Xehanort.

So you've come this far and still...
you haven't painted with the colors of the wind.
>>
>>3851876
Okay. I believe you.
>>
>>3851791

It´s not that it´s deeper but the original game actually manages to do the "tale as old as time" thing Disney was so famous for. Two friends fighting over a girl´s heart. One chooses light, the other one, darkness. At it´s core that´s all the original KH was and that naive simplicity in design was the perfect fit for Disney and what, ultimately, makes the game a timeless classic.

Combat was kind of refined in KH2 but everything else became more convoluted and contrived. That´s why the rest of the games are nothing special.
>>
>>3852120
>Combat was kind of refined in KH2
Press X To Win (Sometimes Triangle) isn't what I'd call "refinement". I enjoyed it well enough as a teenager, but as an adult I find a lot more fulfillment in knowing how to position myself and execute short, precise combos while using all the magic at my disposal than in spamming basic attacks and reaction commands without ever needing to touch the joystick.
>>
>>3851876
the occult elements are pretty overt and you have to be pretty severely retarded to think that its some hidden motif- not you, the guy you replied to. Its milquetoast and watered down into normal fantasy but the VERY FUCKING FACT that every single living being in the series has a physically represented hunger and darkness that can be drawn out by the destruction of its current form under certain malignances or energies, when that form was for all intents and purpose demonstrably uncorruptible- may actually be perceived as a bit sinister yeah, especially when its DIDNEY characters

like you said, whats strange is how the union with a japanese company allowed Disney to withold its usual mandate for "values" and permit some esoteric horseshit- was more than a bit novel at the time. Astral Projecting fuckin WINNIE THE POOH and hundreds of citizens of a fairytale town having their literal hearts collected to power a omen moon
>>
>>3851791
It's not deep, and boy did the sequels try to prove it was by making it contrived and retconny and so many things that are also not deep.

It's really fun though, not hating on it, just answering your question.
>>
>>3851791
Its the most sincere story of adventure and friendship from a time where people weren't drowning in irony.
>>
>>3851791
it's a meh aRPG but an awesome action adventure game. The sequels are just meh aRPGs.

It starts of as a charming game then becomes a tokusatsu with Disney thrown in

Oh, this is bait.
>>
>>3851791
actually genuinely some neat ideas present but it got less and less cohesive as they kept pumping out sequels. at this point i'm pretty sure even the devs themselves dont fully know what the fuck any of it is actually about any more
>>
So general consensus is they made it confusing.

I haven’t played the games but how would you guys do Kingdom Hearts?
>>
>>3852817
Birth by Sleep should have been its own trilogy, disconnected from the events of KH1 - KH2. Get rid of Ventus, too, because he's the least compelling character from that game. Having a game about how the Keyblade disappeared from the Realm of Light (maybe hundreds of years ago) could be a neat direction to follow a trilogy like that.

And it is refreshing that it has never lost that sincerity.

>>3852817
Something in the vein of the later Mega Man series. Continuity is there and rewards long-time players with references and developments and still allows for a real ending, but generally every game could be someone's first. Xehanort is basically Sigma (same character in a new body with a new scheme for each game) already, no need to make it more complicated than that.

>>3852958
I was also hoping for Birth by Sleep to be the start of something new, yeah. That was the time to do it.
>>
>>3851818
I think it's the lack of NPC. Also the design of the enemies are literally devilish.

I don't know what it is, there is something about certain pure heartless that invokes a primal unease.
>darkball
>neoshadow
>Giant heartless at the beginning.

>>3851876
that's not what I meant. It seemed as though there was a looming darkness that could envelop all things at anytime and anyone could succumb to it

>>3852152
> destruction of its current form under certain malignances or energies,
That brought anyone could become part of the mindless horde that are the heartless very easily.
>>3852281
The second was much better than the first.

>>3852650
There were no mechs till KH3 in the toystory world. Are you talking about the knight armor in the prequel?
>>
>>3853162
>The second was much better than the first.
It was worse in every way outside of the combat late game into FM
>>
>>3853167
>better graphics
>better music
>better skills
>more sense of urgency with the organization on your ass
>nice story wrap up
>better hub world
>better gummy sections
>>
>>3853167
KH1 gave me more joy. KH2 got a bit boring at the end.
KH3 needs to burn in hell.
>>
>>3851791
It's babbys first JRPG but its fun and more well made than 95% of action JRPGs are.
>>
>>3853344
Honestly, I feel like KH1, KH2, and KH3 are at the top of the KH totem pole, and it's not even close. I know 3's story is pretty dumb and the combat is pretty simplistic, but I feel like it's a still much better experience than something like BBS or DDD. Re:Coded would be the best of the non-numbered titles.
>>
>>3853222
>better graphics
but worse art direction
>better music
arguable, I prefer 1 but it's close
>better skills
no, KH1 had actual character building unlike 2 which dumps skill points on obvious skills
>more sense of urgency with the organization on your ass
Organization is dogshit, more urgency with them isn't a good thing
>nice story wrap up
LOL KH2 is where the story got retarded and still failed to explain what kingdom hearts is
>better hub world
b8
>better gummy sections
true I forgot about this, I'll give you this one
>>
I was around when Kingdom Hearts came out and even as a middle schooler I could not believe that anyone would ever play it, even as a joke
>>
>>3853548
When I was in middle school social media didn't exist. So there was something wrong with you if you judged people for smoking different cigarettes than you. (Those were song lyrics, we weren't actually smoking in middle school)

It was troubling times when D.A.R.E. insisted peer pressure was real. And we should start judging peoples by their interests and habits.
>>
>>3853988
Not that guy, but to be fair I feel the same way now with KH3. It’s just unbelievable that someone would play KH3 after seeing the clips and reviews.
>>
>>3854167
Like the person behind the Toy Story ip or whatever had to raise her hand and be like, "kingdom hearts? You guys don't know what that is? Uh. Ok. How about Square Enix? They're a publisher."

So the toy story world got a lot of freedom. While the Frozen world was basically recreating scenes from the movie, and a nonsense dungeon created by the lightning user.
And then we didn't get any Final Fantasy characters. Which was the only crossover that mattered.
>>
Excellent action RPG series with lots of great content. Story sucks. You won't find anything similar to KH's combat elsewhere.
>>
>>3854219
>You won't find anything similar to KH's combat elsewhere.
We would've but then they abandoned FF15 having KH combat after originally showing it off with such
>>
>>3853162
I mean I guess that’s truly what the darkness is, the ever so opposite of good and light, chaotic unpredictable, etc.
>>3852958
>>3853004
So basically multiverse shenagains with maybe visiting some ff worlds in there.
Good idea with the prequel stuff being a spinoff that still is related to the stuff of KH chronologically.
>>
>>3854214
>And then we didn't get any Final Fantasy characters. Which was the only crossover that mattered.
This was the big selling point to me for the first one. Cloud and Hercules? Tidus is in it? Like, what is this game? It's insane to me they don't have them return in 3. It's like some bullshit situation where Tarzan can't appear cause global copyright laws make it difficult to publish the game then. Except... SE didn't lose the rights to their own characters, they decided not to do it. It's not just fan service either. It started as a surface level hook. The series hinges on Sora's relationship with these characters. How Sora remembers Jack Skellington or Aladdin. Squall, Cid, all them, just gone. It's like they died and no one talks about them.
>>
>>3854321
I have to wonder, with the Dissidia games, if SE was withholding the final fantasy characters for other reasons.
You got dissidia and the mobile gotcha games.
Then WoFF. Stranger of Paradise features iconic locations. Something was going on.
>>
>>3851818
Liminal. Analog, even.
>>
This game was so cool if you grew up with all the playstation final fantasies and disney movies
>>
>>3854546
Yea, but Squall is an integral character to KH. It's why they folded and included him in the ReMind DLC. They knew they fucked up. The FF characters are more important to the main plot than say, Ariel or Peter Pan. You can cut any disney world and move on and it's not that big of a deal, but leaving Hollow Bastion and/or it's characters out is just plain stupid.
>>
KH1 is not a JRPG it's a fucking platforming game
>>
>>3853162
It's the large size, glowing eyes, and lack of facial features. Aside from the Darkballs having weird mouths, I guess.
>>
>>3853162
Not just the knight armor but 2 had formchanges.
>>
>>3854617
It's an action-rpg. Mario is a platformer.
>>
>>3851791
This should have been a ps1 game
