Discuss ye blobbers, dungeon crawlers and other assorted dungeon games in this threadRoguelikes and roguelites not welcomeRecently finished Makai Agito. Its a SMT clone made in RPG maker. It ran like shit despite that for some reason. Its on the easy side difficulty wise and the level design is serviceable. I would recommend it if you have nothing else to play since you'll be done with it in 20 hours or so.
>>3853459>RPG maker game>runs like shit>easy>mid level design>Dude, play this. Why not make a thread about something you actually enjoy?

Let's just ignore the OP and talk about some good DRPGs. Today we'll start with Kowloon High School.
>>3853477Didn't know this board was infested with brownoid ESLs like youGet your english teacher to parse my post instead of wasting my time
>>3853483Fuck off, newfag.
Why is everyone on this board so grouchy and retarded? On topic I'm playing through Elminage at the moment. I also have a run of Stranger in Sword City in progress as well as several wizardry games. I need to just focus up and finish one.
>>3853459>It ran like shit despite that for some reasonThe 3D plugin for RPG Maker has way too high requirements, sadly. I say that from experience as someone making a game with it. It's really cool but that hurts it a lot because nobody expects something made with RPG Maker to require a powerful machine. The creator of the plugin has been rewriting the MZ version and making it more efficient I believe.

>>3853539whats the idle part of it?the combat or the entire game?
When you figure out that the entire thread is one schizo with his bots replying to himself. You can always see this when a lack of a single punctuation triggers the jeet/esl bots. They are programmed like that.
>>3853701Hello me.
>>3853641The combat. You set up your party, town; buy/sell shit, recruit members, pick up quests, etc etc. You choose your dungeon and you can eventually alter some parameters (overall speed; drop chance, elite encounters, +exp, mimic spawns, etc.)Download the demo and play it yourself, brother.
I'm playing dungeon travelers 2 and got to post game. I'm in eternal hell right now. should I just move on to 2-2? I started that one too and I'm like jumping between the two because the 2's later dungeons are so obnoxious.
>tfw we'll never get StarCrawlers 2I respect the devs for wanting to try something new with Chimera, but damn...
>>3854155I loved the postgame of 2, so I say stick it out, get some good gear, maybe get a crown or two. If you stop playing now, I'm gonna take a guess that you'll never pick it up again. Might as well get a full experience.I assume if you got to Eternal Hell, you enjoy the game.
>>3853459Beat SMT If... , aside from World of Sloth it was pretty good. Really liked all the weird, relatively experimental mechanics. Not much story either, just mostly pure gameplay.
Playing Mazes of Fate on gba and it's comfy. Dungeons are pretty large but none of the enemies or bosses have been difficult so far. Wish there was some optimization guide cause it feels like I'm overleveling on some skills and my pc is stuck being a generic male warrior
Are there any drpg games that are also open world?
Blobber is our word, but you can say blobba.
>>3854613Just call them Dungeon Crawlers like we did back when they still got made by westerners instead of westaboos. All the people who mis use the genre can go suck nigger dicks and we shouldn't change to make them feel better about their worthlessness to society. Gates rarely keep themselves.

>>3854535probably wont have the patience for the superbosses but I'll do the dungeons. one of the reasons I stuck with the game was because I read they removed the class doors in the sequel. I thought I'd hate the mechanic but I'm enjoying doing these high level mazes with totally fucked up parties of various different level brackets. adds some needed spice to the aoe spam power gaming that these games usually devolve into.
>>3854664Very underrated. I used to play that back in the day. There was one other PC gamer in my high school D&D group that was big into it too. We were the weird ones.

Got around to finishing pic relatedIt started off as an alright Etrian Odyssey clone but its extremely buggy. Some bugs can be abused to your advantage but others can completely lock you in the middle of a dungeon forcing you to quit the game. This is exacerbated by the fact that I played it on Hard which doesn't allow you to save in the middle of the dungeon. The difficulties are also as poorly thought out as the rest of the game. Hard boosts enemy stats by 5 to 10%. This means that every single enemy will outspeed even the fastest of your characters buffed up by haste and any character not using a shield or heavy armor will just get one shot from full health. Couple this with the completely random aggro mechanics most random encounters will start with the enemy one shotting your healer or spell caster while the rest of your party finishes the enemies off causing the spell caster to not get experience points. There is also a difficulty level above Hard called Oldschool which increases the random encounter rate and boosts enemy stats by 30%. Its probably doable if you abuse the mechanics but its clearly not designed for normal play. The art feels like an amateur deviant art creator got a high budget and the fan dub tier voice acting just reinforces it. The only good thing about the art I can say is that it all seems to be original work instead of using premade monster packs like some shovelware DRPGs use.Overall I wouldn't recommend it. It doesn't do anything of its own to stand out. You would be better off playing an Experience DRPG.
>>3857725You already have Wizardry 8, Legend of Grimrock Dilogy, the second Elvira game and Waxworks, MnM Worlds of Xeen dilogy, the first Lands of Lore, Bard's Tale(not the 3D comedy action game, the 7-party dungeon crawler), the second Eye of Beholder (Play first one only on SNES with mouse extension enabled, it's got nice music instead of dead silence) Even Stonekeep, for god's sake. There is enough stuff to play for years ahead.Want more? Go for "Temple of Flying Saucers"(Not the Amiga, VGA is more atmospheric) and "Superhero League of Hoboken" if you want some experimental shit. Same for "Pathways into darkness", Mandalore even did a video on it.
>>3857934Also, the two Ravenloft games "Curse of Stradh" and "The Stone Prophet".
>>3857935>>3857934Also Also, "Betrayal at Krondor".
If someone were to make a roguelite inspired by DRPGs what sort of elements would you like to see in it?
>>3859856Party members like One step from EdenMeaning, whatever you don't pick, becomes a boss.
>>3853539Conceptually it's interesting but the art style and weird weeb furfag animal races really don't appeal to me.
>>3853459Yesterday I beat what is possibly the worst version of Rogue ever, the Nintendo Switch port which is apparently just a super lazy dump of an Amiga ROM that it looks like they never even play tested.
>>3859923I also ended up with what is apparently the world high score for this shitty ass dumpster fire of a port. More here if you care for details, >>12102604 but also happy to answer any questions.
>>3859923>>3859924Ironically I misread the OP and this is of no interest so just ignore.
>>3859923What did you play it on?
>>3861468Bot post.
>>3861468It's on Switch. I read that it's a port of the Amiga version which would make sense. It looks the same graphics wise and at one point I had the same level 3 map with the same items pop up in two different runs which is a good indicator it's a console roguelike, they all rotate regenerated maps like that. It's also completely broken, the interface just fucks up randomly so you go to throw something and select 'j' on your item wheel which is a dart but the game decides you meant 'w' so you throw your potion of healing... Also there's a scroll in puc related which I came to call the scroll of destroy game. I don't know what it originally did in the version they ported, but in this it brings up this dialogue box which freezes the game meaning your whole run and save are gone.
Are there any DRPGs that focus more on exploration/puzzles rather than combat? Most DRPGs I played have linear dungeons you absolutely can't get lost in, with nothing interesting about them or to find in them.
>>3861801Horrorsoft titles
>>3861801Picrel has its fair share of combat but is very exploration & puzzle heavy.
>>3853459Are there any dungeon crawlers that are not unrealistic labyrinths like made on grid paper? More like Ultima Underworld, Arx Fatalis or Kings Field.
>DRPG thread>roguelikesWhy? Roguelikes are their own genre already and share next to nothing with DRPGs, why the insistence?
>>3861841Might and Magic 6 onwards Betrayal At Krondor though its primitive rather than "realistic"the Elder scrolls games
>>3861841Well, colossal cave adventure is based on a real cave system, supposedly so accurate that an amateur spelunker could navigate the real cave with nothing but memory of playing the game. It was possibly the first dungeon crawl vidya, and the first text adventure of historical note.
How's Class of Heroes 3?
The Dark Spire finally arrived. Going to give it a go when I'm done with Deadly Dungeons.Speaking of which, did anyone in here actually play Deadly Dungeons? It's an Android game. I was wondering how many dungeon floors it has. I thought it was going to be more of a "low effort" kind of a thing and end when you defeat the lich guy on floor 14, maybe fight some big monster that notes seemed to imply, but no, it goes on to some god realm.>>3853459>made in RPG makerThat would definitely explain the weird controls.
>>3853507>On topic I'm playing through Elminage at the moment.Obligatory reminder that they did release a DRM-free version of Original as well, just not on GOG.>https://www.zoom-platform.com/product/elminage-original-priestess-of-darkness-and-the-ring-of-the-gods
Also getting on the subject at hand after misreading while the OP tipsy and then rambling about Rogue. I do also very much like dungeon crawler rpgs. If the aesthetic of the character designs weren't as cloyingly sweet it would probablybe one of my favorite series of all time. I loved Wizardry and Bards Tale and seem to be one of the few people who thinks the dungeons in Phantasy Star 1 are awesome. I also love SMT in general and the first Persona. Lately I've been going through Soul Hackers which I am trying to really savour. It has that 90's cyberpunk tone where the internet still felt like this weird other world no one really understood yet, not just... whatever the living fuck it is now.
>>3863296>whatever the living fuck it is now.The same as real life but through your phone.
>>3863767>we're living in a cyberpunk dystopia>but we never got cool prostheticsI feel cheated, bros.
>>3853459Anons, help me out.I'm trying to remember a DRPG or maybe blobber. It takes place on top of a school (No, not class of heroes) it has a bunch of esoteric endings like if you dodge left or right in a boss fight determines if someone dies hours later and there's little to no indicator that that would matter. I wanna say it was either PS2 or Xbox era. Or at least looked like it.Anyone got any ideas on what I'm thinking of?
>>3865036I doubt this is the one you're thinking of, but the only DRPG taking place around a school I know of besides CoH is Kowloon High School Chronicle. It is a PS2 game, though it didn't get translated till way later.
>>3865086Hmm, that might actually be it. Or at least it might be part of whatever two+ games my brain has fused together.
How good is this?I've never played Wizardry btw.
>>3866349But dungeon crawling is usually the best paid job in any setting where it exists. Them ancient treasures are worth a pretty penny.
>>3857283I finished Refrain recently and it's one of the better dungeon crawlers I've played. It's definitely more accessible than some of the Experience Inc. titles I've tried though I wish the soul transfer system was more necessary since I'm pretty sure I could've beat the final post game boss without using it though that boss is still some crazy bullshit either way
Yendorian Tales: The Tyrants of Thaine, anyone? As a fan of M&M I really liked this little shareware gem
>>3867985soul transfer is more necessary in the sequel. at least for the last true end boss I had to grind my party to level 500.

>>3866349>dad, mom, 6 kidsA respectably-sized dungeon crawling party if I've ever seen one.
What's a good entry point to the genre? Thinking about giving Stone Prophet a try, but Idk if it'll kick my ass. It can be turn based or real time Idc. I'm a couple of hours into SMT1, Baroque and if it weren't for savescumming, I think I'd have given up. I gave up on Wizardry 1 for the PS1 a couple of years ago. Loved the atmosphere, art direction, vibe, etc, but the RNG kicked my ass.
>>3868889Turn based there's a lot to pick from. If you've had issues with older games a newer one like SMT Strange Journey or Labyrinth of Refrain would be more accessible. There's not many real time DRPGs but the easiest recommendation is Legend of Grimrock 2. The first game is good too but the second is such an improvement it's not even close.
Try Gates of Skeldal, I think it's free nowadays
>>3868008I literally can't even find anything about it by searches. It's apparently some ancient DOS game from 1997 that not even GameFAQs has any guides for??? Which means it's not worth playing, regardless. Even fucking Chip's Challenge has more information about it. I just... I just don't even know what to say other than that.
>>3868926>Chip's ChallengeSheeeeeit.

Is the Saturn version of llylgamyn Saga a good introduction to the first three games? I know you can adjust the settings to make it visually more like the Apple II version.
Dungeon crawling is the last bastion of hipsterdom>Oh, you like Tunnels of Darkness of Evil?>Yeah it's good but have you heard of Tale of Begonias?>It was only released for the Amiga Cumcast in 1988 and has 54 different missable items and 2 save points over its 48 hour duration

I'm making a non-grid real time dungeon crawler. (Sort of like Daggerfall, I guess)I'm just sort of curious if there are any good ones without strafing controls. (good ones made recently, that is. Of course Daggerfall is good)I've got the basic movement controls made, but without enemies to fight, it's a bit hard to know if using only tank controls would feel too bad or not. My experience with this sort of game is a bit limited.Really, if it gets to be an issue, I could also just slow things down and raise the turn speeds until it works.I'm designing the controls to work on a SNES controller, so that's why my options are so limited.
>>3871681making something that was largely played with a mouse and keyboard for a SNES controller seems like a bad idea
>>3871681>I'm designing the controls to work on a SNES controllerWhy can't you map strafe to the L & R shoulder buttons?
>>3871695probably. I got the idea because I've got one of those chinese handheld emulation machines, and once I realized that you can compile Linux games for it, I wanted to put it on there. At the moment, it's more of a self-imposed challenge. The keyboard controls won't have the same limitation of eight buttons and directional keys though.>>3871775I could, but that leaves actions only being able to use the face buttons. I have some ideas on how that could work, but at the moment, I'm not far enough to realistically test out the feel of anything.X and Y are going to be the attack buttons. one for each hand. You can combine the button with a direction to use one of five attacks without having to pause to switch out abilities. One idea is to make L be the Item button (working the same way for five items ready), and R could change the movement control to strafe controls for left and right, and look up/down.
>>3871146They're expecting people to want to buy then when they announce Next Stage in 2 weeks and didn't want to scare them off with the price. TRUST THE PLAN
>>3871876>R could change the movement control to strafe controls for left and right, and look up/down.this could work as a hold. a toggle would suck.
>>3872038good, that's how I meant it.
>Deadly DungeonsFinally finished the "Greek" part of the game (levels 16-20), which has got to be one of the most tedious parts of any game that I have ever done. I am now in the underground city part, and what the fuck, the cannibals hit like a truck. The way traps are rendered has got to be intentional, not an engine limitations. They're always placed in such a way to get you when you least expected.
I've never played a DRPG, but I became interested in them recently. Are there any in particular that you would recommend to a first-timer, or a few that are considered the best of the genre? I'm not afraid to jump into the deep end as long as it's good.
>>3872116I'll only suggest modern stuff, since it's a gentler entry point (nice graphics, interface, and QoL features). Then, you have to pick one of the two main families, Wizardry descendants (turn based combat), and Dungeon Master descendants (real time combat, including movement). For RT combat, you can't go wrong with Legend of Grimrock. Vaporum is nice as well. For TB combat I'd say:-The Dark Spire for something with an old school feel-Labyrinth of Refrain for something story heavy (in a dark fairy tale kind of way)-Etrian Odyssey 3 for a well-rounded newer take on the old Wiz formulaYour tolerance for weeb stuff might color your preferences. Wizardry was and is way bigger in Japan than in the west.
>>3872125Might & Magic is kind of a DRPG franchise. In my opinion, blobbers are DRPGs, really. For that anon, I'd recommend Grimrock 1 & 2 and The Fall Of The Dungeon Guardians. All three are pretty good. Might & Magic X is very similar in gameplay but more like open-world exploration and dungeons rather than just straight down a single mega dungeon.
>>3872153>The Fall Of The Dungeon Guardianslmao someone else played it?
>>3872125>>3872153Since you both recommended Legend of Grimrock, I'll start with those. My thanks, anons.
I'm playing Dungeon Travelers To Heart2 and just beat the 30 floor tower + unlocked the dark cathedral. A bit lost on what to do now, the enemies in there are kicking my ass.I've heard people grind Marduk but my party is around level 65 and doesn't feel strong enough to take her out. Do I just grind random mobs until I can take out Marduk and go from there?
>Deadly Dungeons>reach floor 25>this part is called "The Creature">walls, floors, and ceilings are flesh>walls are covered with eyes and teeth>new enemies are called "White Cell" and "Tapeworm">floor 26 is shaped like a heart>flavor text says heartbeat can be heardOh boy, I wonder what the plot twist is going to be!
I just lost my entire party + backup rescue party on floor 7 of Wiz1 again.
>>3873814why are you wasting your time on floor 7 lmao
>>3873853I haven't finished mapping it yet, plus I was hoping I'd maybe get some better equipment than the stuff in Boltac's shop before moving on to the harder floors.
>>3873475I don't remember the exact numbers when it becomes viable, but the idol slow and ninja slow combo should give you a lot of turns to deal significant damage to Marduk before she can react, though once she does she'll probably wreck youI would just seek out the other optional dungeons/bosses if you haven't yet, because I think that's how I leveled, but one option is tower floor 28, spam the door with a forced battle+flee until mandras appear
>Deadly Dungeons>defeat the final boss>main character's fate is not actually resolved>ending is a sequel hook>sequel never dropped>apparently the only game this dev team ever madeWelp, onto the Dark Spire, I guess.
What's the most recent game that uses Ultima I's model of "3rd person overhead overworld/towns, 1st person dungeons"?Sword of Vermillion (1989) is sorta schizo about this>top-down towns>1st person dungeons and overworld>but random battles are top-down Zelda-like encounters>and bosses are side view (you can't jump btw)On some sort of technicality, the PS2 remake (2003) of Phantasy Star I (1987) which is still top-down towns/overworld, 1st person dungeons and battles.
>>3873856The good equipment can only be dropped on the last two floors. They are also much safer to explore then the earlier floors.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4029090/Rizz_Dungeon_Skeleton_Key_to_My_Heart/DRPG where you seduce monster girls and they fight for you. From the devs of Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion/Robs A Bank. Releases next year.I'll keep a bit of skepticism because while I'm not familiar with Turnip Boy beyond name, I'll be wary of the humor quality given the use of slang in the title and dialogue, and often ecchi content is used to compensate for middling gameplay.Speaking of, what DRPGs have full-on pornographic content rather than just softcore (eg Moero or Dungeon Travellers)? I mean I feel like there's a couple obscure PC-98 games like that but I want names and also something more recent, like the last 20 years or so.

>>3874335>Speaking of, what DRPGs have full-on pornographic content rather than just softcore? There is Isekai Succubus. The gameplay is a little different than usual drpgs since it's designed around short bursts, horny special mechanics and cooldowns. You can always pretend it's not gay.
>>3874335>DRPG where you seduce monster girls and they fight for youSakura Dungeon does this if you haven't played it. A bit excessive on the grind however. And yes it does have nudity (also does that thing in some games where hitting enemies hard enough will remove some of their clothes).

idk how people can like old western garbage dungeon crawlers, they are all obtuse esoteric bullshit that no one gets unless you have a guide
>>3874335I'm rather pessimistic about that game from the visual and writing style (and only having 3 party member slots apparently)There's Rance VI that's a first person tile based dungeon crawler, and Rance Quest that's essentially a dungeon crawler but changes the perspective
>>3875581because they're also old
>>3875581>>3875698i am older than moot yes.and i have beaten some DRPGs w/o a guide. e.g. Ultima UW1. obscure shareware/freeware named "Sword Quest" where you play as a Jester saving the world. Pokemon Mystery Dungeons series. though for the PMD games i did check a guide to unlock some subquests and post-main-plot stuff. well , ok, PMD isn't "western" but it was inspired by them.

I've been thinking that besides Labyrinth of Refrain/Galleria and Zanki Zero, Megami Tensei (going back to the NES games, passing through SMT if and P1, ending on SJ(R)) are very much of a novelty in terms of how you optain playable characters, how you develop them, and (particularly in SJ) what you do in combat. That is to say, in most games the combat is still Wiz 1 maybe with some flavor of "fill gauge and get special move" Limit Break, and character growth/customization involves either allocating points directly on stats or in some sort of skill tree. Hard to think of DRPGs that diverge from this, beyond those real-time ones of the 90s, which in turn are pretty alike to each other in combat still. Sticking to the 1st person grid movement is one thing, but sticking to the combat formula is other, even today non-DRPGs find new ways to remix combat (not necessarily all attempts land)>>3876075How much playime?

Are any post 2012 drpg games worth it in terms of having decent to good dungeon design?
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3265700/Vampire_Crawlers_The_Turbo_Wildcard_from_Vampire_Survivors/There's a fair chance this is a monkey's paw moment where DRPG exploration is brought to the spotlight to a broader modern audience and inspires new games but most/all of said games are roguelikes and/or deckbuilders. That said it's curious how this type exploration is sort of a boomer taste it never had a big cross pollination with roguelikes (the old style often witha ASCII graphics before the indie explosion about a decade ago)

I wanted to take a break from Wizardry so I decided to try this out and so far I don't care much for it. So far I got an item that tells me how many stone blocks are on a floor, and another that ages my character by 1 year when I use it.
Hello, i have a question. I played and beat might and magic games from 3 to 8, and now i would like to try the wizardry series. which one is the best to start with?

>>3883515I've only completed 1 and I had a good time doing it, so I would recommend you start there. However, I can't help but notice you skipped the first 2 M&M games which makes me think maybe you do not want to play a game in which you need to manually make your own maps of areas. In that case, do not start with Wizardry 1.
>>3883522It's usually mentioned in relation to M&M but I'm pretty sure Where Am I is compatable with the wizardry games as well so you can get an automap in wiz 1 if you want. There's also the PS1 collection of the first three games, which has an automap and animations for teleports and spinners, though it's Japan only there's an option to translate most of the text to english without patches, you'd just need to look up spell descriotions.
>>3883522>>3883527For wizardry 1 to 5 I would recommend the PS1 versions purely because of the artwork

>>3883513I've gone through 6 floors of dungeons so far and it has not gotten much better. I'm currently exploring a lake at the bottom of a grotto. In order to reach the lake, I need to go through fourteen mandatory encounters, plus random encounters. These fights are glorified cutscenes consisting 95% of auto attacking and watching combat animations play, with little need to consider tactics, and can easily last a couple minutes each. This would maybe be slightly less tedious if I replaced my thief and bishop with two wizards and spammed AoE spells in every fight, but the combat would still be toothless. The dungeon designs are terrible, seemingly serving no purpose but to be a delivery mechanism for the horrible combat. No interesting tricks, like teleporters or spinners or darkness. No shortcuts, no possibility of getting lost or stuck. Just long gauntlets of bad combat.
>Elminage GothicFor some reason, that game doesn't have true random encounters, but rather pre-determined squares on which fights may or may not happen. If you keep track of it on your map, you can actually avoid some of them. This is so egregious that even fan-made maps on the Internet show what those squares are.
>>3885946Thats how it works in Wizardry so Elminage emulates it

But you still have a chance with every step to get a random encounter.>>3886012Normally in these games when your party wipes you can go find their stuff in the dungeon with a new party, and bring their corpses back to town to be resurrected. It sounds like in EO4, that doesn't happen. But I've never played EO, so maybe that anon and I are both retarded.
>>3886015>Normally in these games when your party wipes you can go find their stuff in the dungeon with a new party, and bring their corpses back to town to be resurrectedThats only a thing in Wizardry
>>3885999I haven't played EO in a while and I never played IV specifically but I think you save at the inn or when you rest.
I come here because I was told this is the blobber general.I was told also that my character, which is a magically conjoined group of 4 anime girls is literally a parody of the genre.I basically came seeking opinions on my character.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4165660/Dungeon_Treaders/Not much detail about this except it's retro-styled. Release next year. Creator is @6_d_6 on twitter. Also wrote a(n untranslated) web novel, Dungeon Settlers ( https://syosetu.org/novel/333478/ )I got the image IP blcok thingy but https://x.com/6_d_6/status/1997603909981044991>ゲームシステム上、宿屋と酒場と訓練所なんて全部同じ施設で済むのです、が。敢えて分割。褐色看板娘NPCとか何人いても困らないですからね>In the game system, stuff like inns, taverns, and training halls can all just be covered by the same facility, but I deliberately split them up. You can never have too many tanned signboard girl NPCs, after all.

>>3882724I really wish they'd just structured it so you have to opt-in instead of opt-out of doing the Redux stuff. As it is Alex just fucking kills you and then you get deus ex machina'd back to life by Redux content and not doing it feels wrong
Finished Disillusion, it was fun and comfy, though very simple gameplay wise. Also, the dev is definitely a local.
>>3886724>Also, the dev is definitely a local.yeah the game has tranny vibes
Labyrinth of touhou tri finally has a release date! The resident autist is going to be very upset about it.
