Final Fantasy became a story-focused series with Final Fantasy 4 because Sakaguchi wanted to get all the coverage Dragon Quest was getting in Shonen Jump and Dragon Ball editor Kazuhiko Torishima told him he'd get his coverage if he made the next Final Fantasy more story focused.
