This is the first time I've loved a SaGa game, in fact I think I might be addicted (Balmaint route)I've played RS 1, 2 and 3, Frontier 1 and 2 and Minstrel Song. Out of those MS was the one I kinda liked but really the only thing I liked was glimmering new techs and RS3's commander modeScarlet Grace is differentThe town are menus and there are no dungeons, but the battle system is just that greatJust thought I'd share, thanks for reading my blog
What didn't you enjoy about the other SaGa games?
>>3857758I don't know, I guess in spite of the unorthodox growth systems I didn't find the battle systems themselves all that interesting and the games didn't have interesting plots and characters to compensate (except maybe Gustav)I'm even interested in the story in Balmaint's chapter and I don't particularly miss the dungeon crawling, the game gets straight to the combat
The battle system in this one sucks wtf? I hate the thing games do where each character moving is slammed up front to take up all of your screen. It breaks some kind of continuity and I don't like it. Soul Hackers 2 does this as well. The way SaGa Frontier did battles is how every SaGa game should be. I wanna see all my little fuckers in their formation against the enemies in their formation. I don't need a fucking stupid close-up shot of each character every time I input a command for them. It's stupid and lazy.
>>3857912Yeah I don't care about any of that if I'm being honest, mechanically Scarlet Grace's battle system is pure bliss to me
>>3857950What does it do mechanically different from something like SaGa Frontier? It looks the same to me.
>>3857967It's about using a regenerating BP pool to use your techs and manipulate the turn order so an enemy ends up between two or more of your characters. If they manage to kill that enemy all the surrounding characters will do a united attack on the next enemy. But the enemies can do the same to youThere's other stuff like interrupts and counterattacks and status effects that actually matter but you'd have to play the game yourself to get a feel for it
I do like the systems in SG and EB, but the battles are so slow paced with the animations that I lose interest quickly.
>>3858107I don't mind because I gre up with ps1 rpgs where that was the norm, but yeah they should've had the option to speed up/remove attack animations
>>3858121SG does have a speedup option, but it's not available until you complete your first playthrough. EB has more issues that should get resolved like the bafflingly slow menus which is a problem that none of the other games have. I was hoping they'd release a patch or something but after a year and a half it's not happening it seems.
>>3858129>SG does have a speedup option, but it's not available until you complete your first playthroughGood to know, it'll come in handy when I decide to play the other routes. Still think it should be available from the get go
the firebringer did nothing wrong
>>3857747It's a weird game, even by Saga standards. I love the combat system and the art direction.Really wish it had a more significant budget. Kawazu is a game director with a vision, but too many times he has been constrained by a lack of resources.
>>3858129EB does at least have a mod which speeds up the menus and cutscenes. Not ideal but I'll take ithttps://github.com/Denhonator/EmeraldBeyondQoL
>>3857972Hm... It sounds interesting now. Altering the flow of battle based on how you act is like the SMT press-turn system.
Also I like the mechanic that if a status effect fails, the next time you attempt to inflict it your chances will be higher
>>3857747Is Unlimited worth getting into? I played Minstrel Song, RotS, a little RS3 and Frontier 2, and I still haven't made my mind up if I like the series
>>3858688Can't say, never tried it, but I've heard it's supposedly rather inaccessible even by SaGa standardsI guess you could try emulating it for a bit, so even if you don't like it at least you didn't waste any moneyI bought Scarlet Grace for my ps5 but I think you can emulate the android version through bluestacks (my laptop's not good enough for it)
>>3858693Scarlet Grace has a pc port thoughAnd I highly doubt any piece of hardware from the past 13 years or so would have any trouble running a ps vita game
>>3858720>And I highly doubt any piece of hardware from the past 13 years or so would have any trouble running a ps vita gameBut it gets really hot and noisy and I don't like that :(
>>3858727dust your laptop bucko
>>3858731It's a toshiba, apparently they're notoriously a hassle to open, wish it was notorious to me before I bought mine
I couldn't get into it mainly because it feels too much like a gacha game. I won't say anything in particular about the battle system because I didn't get too far into it, but it's just weird not having traditional dungeons and exploration and it's just walking to nodes with 1-3 battles. It just feels weird. But then again I'm the kind of freak that clicked with Unlimited so I don't know.
>>3858870Yeah I can see that, having towns with NOCs to talj to would be nice but it has a lot of back and forth between the two deuteragonists tho, which is nice and not something I remember seeing in other SaGa games
>>3858688it's worth at least one playthrough. imo the worst deterrent the game has is that the campaigns have a wide range of difficulties and it's stated nowhere which characters are fairly easy and which are dante must die mode. I suggest watching the first 5 minutes of this video if you're interested https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1brcx4bDoFY
>>3859241>and it's stated nowhere which characters are fairly easy and which are dante must die mode.https://wikiwiki.jp/unsaga/%E4%B8%BB%E4%BA%BA%E5%85%AC%E3%81%AE%E9%81%B8%E3%81%B3%E6%96%B9According to this wiki, Ventus and Judy are for beginners, and Laura is considered a "Koizumi Trap". Speaking of Koizumi, he retired last week from what I've gleamed in X.
>>3859241Thanks, I kinda dreaded that getting into the game would take me reading tons of manuals but mayhaps I can wing it from here
>>3858688Of you're willing to learn how to play the game, it's worth checking out. If you want a similar SaGa or bog standard JRPG experience and the game teaching you how to play it, then no, avoid Unlimited Saga.
Since I haven't been home for 5 days now, I caved in and downloaded the game for free on my spyphoneThis time I took Urpina's route and holy shit it's way harder than Balmaint's, everyone has less LP, a lot of the battles are hard, there are no LP restoring wild cherries and I have a very shitty starting mage (but I just got Miriam so I hope things improve)And she's the easiest character to get as a starter, how trollish
>>3859541I think Urpina is the easiest one to get because it's the most straight forward one. The others are a little bit more open ended iirc
>>3859575I would assume in the more open routes you can ignore a roadblock and return to it later, while Burpina is fuckedReally, the main issue is that her starting mage sucks, he's nowhere near as good as ArthurWhat is the point of the Siren spell? It inflicts damage and the frenzy status to all enemies, and frenzy causes all enemies to target the character that inflicted it, which is in this case a frail mage with 4 LPSo it's basically a suicide button for mages as far as I can tell
>>3859603You can set up protects and interrupts easily. Once you know who the enemies are going to attack then you can prepare accordingly
Welp, had to reload an earlier save because I apparently missed out on dual wielding for Urpina because I didn't take the boat to escape her home countryAnd I just reached Azhuacan tooI wouldn't do this for just any game, I like it that much
>>3859280well yeah I wouldnt recommend laura for beginners either. even though her campaign is very linear she also has access to least amount of towns and quests so if you don't make panel growth count you will be fucked beyond repair.
>>3857747I liked SaGa 2, RS2, Minstrel Song, and Frontier, but I couldn't get into Scarlet Grace or Emerald Beyond. The combat is good, particularly in Emerald Beyond, but I dislike just about everything else.
>>3859603I wonder if they actually meant you to just ignore the mage? After all, the magic system is one of the least intuitive things going - and you really can beat the game just with blocks and status effects. The tricky bit with Urpina was the use of a squid as a plot boss. After that it was plain sailing
>>3857747>>3857950Wait until you play Emerald Beyond. It is a crystal of untold beauty.
>>3860568Does it open up more later into the game? I tried it a few times and I find all main characters repulsive and found it weird that the gameplay is just going from battle to battle
>>3860480Doubt it, I got Elysed and she's pretty powerful. If Solon started with something like Poison Mist and Wildfire he would've been much better>>3860568Interesting, I'm assuming it's built off the one in Scarlet Grace, Kawazu would be a fool to part with this battle system
While I like the battle system, I hate that SaGa is turning into just a barebones battle simulator instead of a full RPG experience.
>>3860752In past Saga games you mostly selected areas on a map and explored the locations, while in Grace you explore the map and the dungeons are just battles, it's kinda flippedI don't thik this battle system would work with traditional dungeons with tons of roaming enemies in them. It would slow the game to a crawlBut I guess they could include fully explorable towns with NPCs in the next one
>>3857747I love SSG but for some reason I don't enjoy EB, thinking I'll just replay SSG all over again to get my Saga fix
>>3857972>If they manage to kill that enemy all the surrounding characters will do a united attack on the next enemy.Sounds gay and retarded>Olive the cleaning lady managed to smash a cockroach that got between her and Sandra the cleaning lady, so all the cleaning jannies got into a formation and simultaneously smashed the next cockroach together in celeberation
>>3865092>posting bait to drag the thread off page 10tsk tsk
Just beat Savnok and Antonius. There's a guide that claims Savnok is immune to sleep and poison and I'm here to say that's total bulshit because I managed to put him to sleep twice with Mesmerize (rank III) and poisoned him with Mizuchi, made the fight a cakewalkAntonius almost ended me though
>>3857747To me, Scarlet Grace is the epitome of: "Good JRPG battle systems are essentially puzzle games.">>3865092>Cockroaches standing in formation>One goes down and their side collapses>Cleaning ladies take advantage of the opening and break through until the roaches can form back upWhat's difficult to understand about that?
>>3857747>The town are menus and there are no dungeonsfor me, those are just objectively good things, i'm sick of """exploration""" where you wander down 5 empty paths before you come across the right one by process of elimination, it's just paddingnto force you into fights, scarlet grace and emerald beyond strip all that bullshit away and get right to the meat of the matter
>>3857912you're autistically retarded, stay away from all videogames, chris-chan
>>3857967tell me you don't play rpgs without telling me you don't even play rpgs
>>3859541every mage starts out "shitty" and everyone can be a mage, they all take time to build up
>>3860745emerald beyond massively expands on scarlet grace, it's kinda rough to go back to scarlet grace after experiencing emerald beyond
>>3860752fuck a so-called "full" "rpg experience"that's the kind of retarded shit a pseud secondary who doesn't play rpgs would say, fuck off
>>3865716interesting, I'm sure I'll get to itIn any case the battle system in scarlet grace should be spoken of in the same breath as the one in grandia and squeenix should do more to shill this game in the west
I just beat a "scarlet fiend" by having one of its underlings eat it lmao. The underling was about to use feast on another weaker enemy, but since I killed it before it had time to do that it ate the bossI never thought that could happen, I thought for sure the boss would be immune to thatthis game is so cool
>>3865710Elysed comes with one of the best spells in the game by default and is a noticable glow up compared to the two shitters you have to deal with before she joins.
>>3865718god forbid people expect a full-fledged rpg experience instead of franchise fanboyism which JRPGfags do most of the time
scarlet grace was definitely one of the game where I really enjoyed having a party larger than the one used in battle, swapping around units and weapons battle to battle was really fun.Any recs for games that any of you enjoyed with similarities to that?
>>3866844SaGa Emerald Beyond is the closest to SG in regard to that, though unfortunately there aren't as many recruitable characters. The Last Remnant also lets you have reserve party members with a ton of recruits available.
Has anyone attempted Revenge of the Seven's Romancing difficulty? Is it worth doing? Is it possible to beat the post-game bosses in 5 turns without shadow magic?
just beat another scarlet fiend (Asmodeus), Mondo was the last character standing and Windmilled Asmodeus to deathFucker had a ton of HP but fortunately only Harvest Vitality, which was countered every time
also, prior to that, there was a chracter that wen't full lesbian for Urpina because the fake Urpina proposed to herI asked her to join but don't see her in my retinue, what gives?
>>3866926whoops, nevermind, just went to Lug and recruited her
>>3866853EB didn't really click when I played last time, but maybe I'll give it another shot.TLR sadly I have played, p cool game though. Thanks!
>Try Urpina Route multiple times>Bounce offI don't know what about Scarlet Grace that I can't seem to connect to. I liked Romancing Saga 2/3 and Saga Frontier 2.
>RoTS got a patch that buffed all in one body suits among other thingsDef based hard tanking might be viable now
>>3869200try Balmaint's route, I find its plot more interesting and the gameplay is easier
>>3869624Really? I got the impression that his route was the hard one. Then again, Urpina starts with a bunch of shitters so...
>>3869766I don't think anyone doesn't start off with a bunch of shitters. Urpina at least has Mondo, Arthur is a pretty meh mage. (everyone is, next to Elysed)Balmaint has more of a story focus but you're on rails until the very end, so that's the choice you're making.
>>3869779I feel like Talia's comparable to Elysed.
So does the tree in megadesse grow more apples or did I fuck myself over by picking the black apples?
wait what, I followed the phoenix to azhuacan and ended up fighting savnok, sigfrei and the firebringer and beat them all without breaking a sweat, what happened? Did I end the game prematurely or something?maybe I overdid it with the battles
>>3869817Her whole party is fine. Compass and Queen are both super usable, Khan is great, you get unmissable access to based Darling early on too.
>>3869779Mondo is my man.
