What game has the most fun turn-based combat?
>>3864804its not even close man
>>3864804Final Fantasy XI haven't played another (non-strategy rpg) turn-based game where I paid so much attention and played around the turns themselves.
>>3864804>SMT III, IV, IV:A, VPress turns are so good. Persona does these as well.>Mario-Luigi Bros gamesAlways engaging and fulfilling, lots to do. Challenging on ones with harder difficulty options.>>3864823I had an ex who played it and fucking loved it. I still never got around to playing it but I know it's a great game. I will at some point.>>Darkest DungeonIf it weren't for the stupid RNG and permadeath and other QoL stuff this one. I really like the mechanics and presentation. I've beaten it but only by altering things a bit. It's too much of an RNG grindfest otherwise.
>>3864825I keep dropping FFX every time I go to play it. I didn't see much about it being great, wasn't it just standard turn-based combat?
>says fun, means gimmicky
>>3864825>>3864829I'm a few hours into X and so far the combat is okay. Each character specializes in damaging a specific type of enemy (fast enemies, armored enemies, flying enemies, ect.) so you can't just spam attacks indiscriminately, but it also means you're pretty limited in what you are going to do, since each character's role is clearly defined.
>>3864828>I really like the mechanics and presentation. I've beaten it but only by altering things a bit. It's too much of an RNG grindfest otherwise.I feel the exact same way. It's a shame such a great system is locked behind a tedious slog. If you lose a single character your progress is set back by hours.
>>3864833>Each character specializes in damaging a specific type of enemy (fast enemies, armored enemies, flying enemies, ect.)That's just the first layer. Your thinking is limited.
>>3864825>quick hit>quick hit>quick hit>quick hit>quick hit>>3864823>spam the same 3 additions over and over, occasionally turn into dragoons and watch cutscenes for 5 mintues>>3864804actual correct answer, its just too bad the game doesnt require you to take advantage of the system until the final chapter/100 trials unless youre doing some kind of challenge run.for non turn based I have to mention star ocean 3. once you grasp all the mechanics and chain combos which the game doesnt even explain to you its truly peak.
>>3864804>>3864823I don't like QTE inserted universally into TB combat.I like the idea of cutscene-y super moves requiring you to do a minigame though - it makes them feel less cheap and more engaging.
>>3864804The game is everything else you do. The combat is simply the visual representation of the things you did, collecting equipment, planning, character building.Talking about the combat in a vacuum tells me you don't know what the fuck you are talking about and should not have an opinion.
>>3864857No way man some games allow for richer decision making in the battle itself, some people like that
I will never get sick of the simultaneous gum-tape-death-match basis of traditional RLsunless that doesn't really count

>>3864919On that note, "Hoчнoй Дoзop" (Night Watch) made on the same engine.
>>3865044I keep forgetting that game exists. I found the books and movies pretty amusing and I guess the game is also janky as hell but kind of fun.
>>3864804>turn-based combat>funMutually exclusive
>>3865617>any video game>fun
>>3865621>living
>>3865714>dying
>>3865617why are you even in this board if you hate TB combat?
>>3866138Came to leave that post
>>3864840>too bad the game doesnt require you to take advantage of the system until the final chapter/100 trials unless youre doing some kind of challenge run.The late game is exactly when TTYD's battle system starts to wear on you. The stage hazard gimmick starts to become especially tedious. By the time I was in the final dungeon, I remember the fucking fog hazard coming up so frequently that I just started running from every battle when it popped up because it wasn't worth the wasted turns of whiffing the enemy just to get EXP and coins I didn't fucking need.
>>3864828>Persona does these as wellNot really, the one more functions quite differently but I do get what you mean. Press turn is much better balanced though.
