Modern developers are pussies and do it completely wrong. The game should mechanically reward you with money, loot, XP, other resources, etc, for being evil. The typical metagaming no-roleplaying RPG player who's following a guide to get all the best results should constantly be tempted to pick the evil paths. Meanwhile, playing virtuously and morally and doing the right thing is its own reward, and that's more than enough.

I don't want to be patted on the back or kissed on the ass for taking the asshole option. I just don't want to be entrapped into an aborted questline for picking the less cliche choice in a feature incomplete dialogue tree. If there's a "be an asshole option" that gates you from content then there had better be an equivalent amount of content in the game that is unlocked by taking the option as well. Fun content as well, not some preachy bullshit from the developer.

Developers despise any sort of player assertiveness because it's assertive players that deviate from the intended narrative/gameplay routes. Lazy devs will simply not give you any option to protest whereas deceitful devs (the more common variety nowadays) use false choice to mechanically punish deviation. This isn't strictly limited to dialogue or quests either, it's usually baked directly into the character building. You took ability A at level 1 but took ability D2 instead of A2 at level 2? Hope that mechanical interaction was potent enough because you're now MAD and have 25% less stat utilization because you decided to think outside the box.

Dialogue choices that don't have a stat/skill check should, as a rule, have similar levels of merit at all times. If they don't then you are not actually facing a choice, you are just being quizzed by the developer.

Does the paladin choosing A suffer any tangible consequence or does the NPC just produce 500GP into existence for the player and then return to default dialogue routines? Merit can mean a variety of things: Progression advantages, player enjoyment, content access.

"Evil" choices are just part of acceptable morality, which is why most evil paths fail
