I escaped Privateer's Hold, what do I do in this game? it's even more ambiguous than Morrowind.

Go to guild, get a quest, do it. Repeat.

You run shitty dungeons until you get bored

From what I remember, you had to wait until someone approaches you for the main quest. I stopped playing before that.

You have to find the power source for an ancient mechanical god and decide which one of the local political powers gets to remake the world with it.

Nothing.
other than the main quest, there's nothing but repetitive radiant quests that bring you to a procedurally generated town or dungeon with no substance.

You fuckers almost trolled me into trying to finish this game, which I haven’t played in like 25 years. I was doing a little reading last night about artifacts to dangle a carrot on a string in front of myself, and it looks like the Paladins Blade was a CompUSA exclusive (lol) and in order to get the Lords Mail, my paladin would have to kidnap an innocent child on behalf of a witch. NO THANKS

The guy you replied to is retarded but this anime is too. They show the glowie commander's cabinet cactus glowing in like the middle of the series (in resonance with the hero(es) battling that not quite the evilest thing, I believe), and NEVER fucking resolve that plot hook. It wasn't the commander's PSYCHO power that he used to battle the glowie hero, that's for sure.

Just started it, about an hour of gameplay. 4 bugs, 2 of them ended up bricking my game. Interface is worse than Arena. Controls WAY worse than Arena (can't turn left or right when going backwards). Took me ~8 hours to encounter the first game-breaking bug in Arena, took me 5 minutes in Daggerfall. Looting corpses requires you to crawl and cookie click the body until it finally works. Mouselook breaks combat completely. The only redeeming feature is the class creation system so far. It's fucking terrible, even by Bethesda standards. Arena was nowhere near this broken, and I didn't install a single patch for it. A downgrade in almost every aspect, amazing first impression. I don't want to play the Unity port because it feels way too different, but at the same time the original seems to be borderline unplayable, even patched to hell and back. I'll try playing for a few more hours, if it doesn't give me some of the best stuff I've ever seen right after Privateer's Hold, I'm dropping this mess.
>>
Bit of advice, Daggerfall Unity (you're playing Daggerfall Unity, right?) is a piece of shit, albeit a more playable and bug free verson of the original.

It is stale. Empty. You're ostensibly meant to roleplay a character archetype in game, but vanilla is so obscenely dry and empty that it's next to impossible. Fortunately, modders over the past few years have genuinely performed miracles and have created mods that do everything from adding unique city tilesets to making the overland actually meaningful, to adding guilds and questlines.

It's your choice if you want to install them, but Daggerfall is an empty, ugly, unplayable piece of shit without.

People appreciate Daggerfall for the best vanilla Elder Scrolls tits. It has some really nice pixel boobs. The rest of the series don't have boobs which is still better than the horror in Battlespire.

I knew I shouldn't have knocked it down since I basically have no knowledge of it except some reviews, it will get the 2nd place in the series for it in the tits category.
>>
>>3875337
>"fix"
I don't think a game so ancient should tax modern systems too hard, but since it's a fan Unity port it does.
>>
>>3875282
>I don't want to play the Unity port because it feels way too different
Feels different how?
>>
>>3873634
Reroll your character. Make it a High Elf. High elves have natural immunity to paralysis (EXTREMELY helpful vs spiders). You can create a custom class and give yourself the disadvantage of Weakness vs Paralysis. It won't overwrite the High Elf's natural condition, so you'll have the upside of just having a ton of advantage. Do it, because the game is fundamentally broken, so it's fair to break it yourself.
>>
>>3875282
why are you playing using DOS box
>>
>>3873634
How long is this game (just the main quest)? I just finished Morrowind (never touching that shit again), and I'm interested to try out Daggerfall. Seen one gameplay webm of Daggerfall, about fighting on a green field, that tempt me to try it, but I don't see giving it more than a dozen or so hours.

It plays differently regardless of settings, feels modded and modernized without any mods. That signature Unity stank, you can smell it from a mile away. Allow this short crusty webm to tell the story. Cursor mode is not planned, and it's always buttery smooth because there is no FPS limiter. The only modified element is the expanded inventory grid, forgot to tick it off when recording. The rest is baked into the port, as far as I know. My maiden is NOT pure enough. You can bring up the interface, but since cursor mode is WONTFIX, it's purposefully half-functional and practically useless.
>>3875376
It's a DOS game.
>>
>>3875426
So is Daggerfall (the original version) basicly Doom, but an rpg?
>>
>>3875426

>>
>>3875282
>>3875426
I played Daggerfall on dosbox and don't remember it being that buggy, worst I had was some clipping into the void. Seems like your a retarded zoomer who can't handle the "clunkiness" of older games but you're also too much of a fag to just play on Unity which fixes all those problems. DOS Daggerfall also has modern mouselook and you can rebind the controls to make it play like a more modern game but again you're too much of a retarded zoomer to look in the settings for a minute and make these changes. Arena didn't even have customizable keybinds.

>>3875395
How long it takes to beat the main quest depends on how good you are at navigating maze-like dungeons and not getting softlocked because you forgot to bring some way to counter cancerous status effects. It's hardly as long as Morrowind's though, I'd say it would take about the same amount of real life time as Skyrim's or Oblivion's main quests depending on your character and navigation skills.
>>
>>3875450
>cancerous status effects
Same as Morrowind's "damage attribute" effects? As in damaging your strength, so you are stuck, or have to run (or spell teleport) back to town, then run back for your gear? That was cancer, and Skyrim solution for it is such a copout, instead of removing that spell, or make it easier to fix, they removed all attributes instead...
>>
>>3875457
Status effects literally kill you here if allowed to progress, can softlock if you dont make backup saves
>>

>>

You’re supposed to complete the main quest and finish the game.
>>
>>3874030
You think that’s bad? Bro I got trolled into replaying Arena and killing Jagar Tharn without clicking the floating gemstone thing.
>>
>>3875602

>>
>>3875612
No, I came here to dungeon crawl and complete side quests.
>>
>>3875428
... What???
>>
>>3879173
>No, I came here to dungeon crawl and complete side quests.
That may be what you personally find fun and choose to do in the game, but it is false to state that "there is not really any goal " to the game, which is what the post I was responding to claimed. The game was designed to have a definite objective, a sequence of main quests, and an end state(s).
>>
>>3873634
I was shitting on DF earlier in this thread but I picked it up again and I forgot how well the game lends itself to actually roleplaying, something that is lost on a lot of role-playing game fans. Unfortunately the game does still get very repetitive quickly even when playing it that way.
Also I like how burglary is actually worthwhile in this game (if not overpowered). Later Bethesda games don't really replicate this experience, Morrowind has static NPCs which means you can't steal shit without camera fuckery or chameleon, while Oblivion and Skyrim very rarely have anything worth burglarizing from NPC buildings. Meanwhile in Daggerfall you can very easily kit yourself out with just stolen gear and make thousands of gold by selling stolen shit.

>>3879222
A vast majority of the map doesn't involve the main quest at all and if you fail the main quest it doesn't give you a game-over screen, you can just keep dungeon crawling, doing guild quests, and burglarizing shops. This was coming from Arena when Bethesda changed the game to be more open-world and have side quests and more places to explore after playtesting found that part of the game more engaging than just a linear main quest.
Not denying that there is a main goal to the game, but Bethesda RPGs have always been designed with the intent that the player can fuck off and do whatever they want if they don't want to do the main quest.
>>
>>3879231
>A vast majority of the map doesn't involve the main quest at all
A vast majority of the map is also just a virtually empty, procedurally-generated wasteland with nothing interesting in it.
>Not denying that there is a main goal to the game, but Bethesda RPGs have always been designed with the intent that the player can fuck off and do whatever they want if they don't want to do the main quest.
This is a reasonable statement, I agree with you here.

I still think a modern version of daggerfall would be bigger than skyrim. If you did the proc gen right, and had interesting guilds, goals; guilds to become master of and cities to rule, it's like the ultimate rpg.

Climbing is such a fun skill, especially with the optional changes in the Unity port. I wish the later ES games had an equivalent, it would also be a good way to give non-magic characters a way through mandatory levitation sections in Morrowind.
>>
>>3885925
>it would also be a good way to give non-magic characters a way through mandatory levitation sections in Morrowind
No. This is missing the entire point.
There's already potions and the steel blade of heaven, and the game itself tells you this in character to prepare yourself when needed, but the point is "fuck you, peasant, stay on the ground"

I think the ridges on the inside of the tunnels are meant to help simulate climbing for high acrobatics characters.
I was going to post a picture of them to help illustrate my point but fuck me if google images hasn't gone to complete shit. You google "telvanni tower interior" and you're lucky if 25% of the pictures are even of morrowind, let alone of telvanni towers, and don't even dream about finding the actual places which require levitation.
Anyway, you know what I mean. Those circles in the tunnels. This post was more to complain about google images
>>
>>3885925
I never found one for Morrowind but there was a mod that adds it to Oblivion which was fun for archer characters. Giving enemies the ability was broken at the time but would be fun to have the possibility of being ambushed.

Not him. The only genuine improvement is to the map screen, it fucks up hit detection and breaks the traits so that "immunity" to certain things no longer gives you actual immunity.
>>

>>
>>3874053
Funny that despite that making your own class is supposed to be one of the draws of TES, the playthroughs I always have the most fun win are either 100% pure warrior, 100% pure wizard or 100% pure thief.
That's because those actually have distinct weaknesses you have to play around, whereas when you create your own class you'll just grab the most powerful skills from each archetype.
