I heard these games are good for what they are and they're on sale. Are they worth the money and time to play them? Most importantly, are they ______fun?
>>
>>3877491
Vom has a decent class system, serviceable itemization and subpar graphics and level design. Gameplay is brain dead.
>>
>>3877491
They're both very solid games, but nothing that WILL blow you away. Are you familiar with either franchise? I will say Visions looks great, though.
>>
>>3877529
visions or trials?
>>
>>3877491
>>3877526
>>3877529
Earlier Mana games are fun. The top one is not. It's the most retarded Mana game I ever played. Looks great but it is so dumb. The antagonists are the good guys and everyone else is just cult levels of retarded. The Goddess is also the most evil being in that game with how incompetent she is.
>>
Out of all the Star Ocean games, I think Divine Force might be my favorite to play. I wasn't crazy about the plot or characters, but it's middle ground that you can't hate.
>>
>>3877560
I hope the flying stuff is them getting ready to make Hrist her game. Tri Ace Presents Valkyrie Profile 3+1: Lightning Can Not (Re)Turn, a fourth game in the Lightning Profile series tying up all the leftover plotpoints from when history collapsed.

What do you have to say to the top review on steam being a fat negative?
>>
>>3877491
Mana is a solid action rpg.
Divine Force is one of the better Star Ocean games.
There are demos for both, so just try them.

>>3877536
Visions is infinitely better and more polished.
The main appeal of Trials is that you can choose the protag and other 2 party members, which changes the game a bit. But the level, world, combat design is all worse than Visions. Characters are worse and more stilted too. Ok game, but yeah Visions is better.
>>
>>3877609
>Visions is better
No fucking way

It absolutely is. The world design and level design alone is 100x better in Visions.
Trials uses linear hallway type design, even for exteriors, since it's originally a SNES game. Areas are also typically very flat and simple, often having invisible walls.
Visions have huge open areas for you to explore, with lots of elevation changes, platforming and quests in them. Dungeons aren't just hallway sims either and have more elevation and things going on in them. This includes traversal and interaction elements.

Running around and exploring is infinitely more fun in Visions. Visions also has a better combat system. So the act of playing the game is way more fun and interesting in Visions.

As I said, the appeal of Trials is to select your protag and party and see how that changes when you play. But it has a lot of baggage of being an old SNES game which the remake didn't fix.

>has no actual proper criticism and can't even articulate his issues well
Only reason to read steam reviews is to laugh at midwits.
>>
>>3877536
Visions may be better in some ways but after beating it once I'll probably never play it again. Trials is fun to play through.
>>
I stopped after FF10, I can’t imagine any nu-Squaresoft being appealing. The only other one I could ever see playing is 12

>>3877645

You can just pirate them
>>
>>3877633
The important thing to be is the combat - how is that in Visions compared to Trials?
>>
I don’t like action rpg combat but star oceans world looks pretty neat. How’s the exploration and side quests? I might need to make an exception.

I don't think I really want that anymore. I feel like we've reached a point in a lot of games were a "HUGE OPEN WORLD" ends up translating to a "GIANT BORING COMMUTE."
>>
>>3877491
Refunded divine force because the steam version is unbearably blurry. Even sharpening from reshade doesn't help at all. What the fuck is wrong with these devs
>>
>>3879336
Do we really have to break this down one thing at a time?
Which games has better level and world design, Visions or Trials? If you say Trials you need to motivate it with extensive elaboration. Otherwise you concede you're irrational and biased.
We both know you can't answer this and will resort to deflection ands shitposting instead.
>>
>>3879455
I'm not going to waste my breath on your retarded ass.
>inb4 muh concession
Don't care. Take your fake internet points and shove it up your ass.
>>
>>3879377
You can travel across the areas quickly, either by running or on a mount you can summon at any time.
It's mostly there to not feel like a hallway sim with invisible walls everywhere, like Trials of Mana.
But if you're OP, not sure why you'd ask about Divine Force and Visions when both games have open areas to explore.
>>
>>3879407

>mid to shit story
>janky controls
>>

NTAsshole but I'm curious about that breakdown you just mentioned because I'm still on the fence as to whether I should get visions or trials this sale. Thank you in advance, anon, and know your words are not wasted here.

The studio (Xeen) that worked on the Trials remake also remade Romancing Saga 2 which is known to be a success, much like Trials. Now, the studio (Ouka) that worked on Visions...AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA THEY SHUTDOWN JUST BEFORE THE GAME WAS EVEN RELEASED!!
>>
>>3879492
AAA-coded AA games on a restricted budget
>>
>>3879512

>>
>>3879502
NTA but
Trials is fundamentally a short SNES game at its core. So while it offers 6 MCs, its really 3 core storylines that are 90% the same per playthrough. There's some minor exploration in some zones but they're mostly linear.
Trials combat is basically Musoulite in that everyone follows the same CX system and you use shortcuts to access your spells/specials. The AI is also about as dumb as you'd expect, so be prepared to do most of the work.
Visions follows a singular story where everyone joins. It has much larger areas and generally better dungeons, but combat feels a bit worse than Trials in certain aspects. Visions has sidequests but many of them require a lot of tedious back and forth, which can be a serious pain in the ass. In terms of difficulty, Visions has a much lower peak due to the lack of Expert/No Future.
There's also more movesets to experiment with since there's 15 of them instead of 6 and they dont all follow the same basic style.

Overall, they're both solid games that have their own pros and cons.
>>
>>3879519
Thanks for replying. Everything you spelled out sounds interesting but how is the story in visions? It's the glue that holds everything together since whether it's good or not will determine if I can be motivated to do all the side quests.
>>
>>3879519
AI is dumb in Trials albeit tolerable, but HOLY FUCK did I want to kill myself during the Zehnoa boss fight.
>>
>>3879516
>cunt
You lost to emu's, roofucker. Go back to bed ausfag.
>>
>>3879523
If you're familiar with FFX and Tales of Symphonia, then the core concept is the same. A group of people go on a pilgramage for the sake of preserving the world and you deal with their feelings on the journey. However, the game doesnt try to subvert it with religion bad like the others because sacrifice for the greater good is a core theme of Mana from the beginning. Instead it explores other themes along the way.
>>
>>3877633
Trials mogs it in every way.
Crazy how big of a difference a developer can make. Studio Xeen which made Trials is producing banger after banger while Visions was developed by a new studio which was really just NetEase + two Japenises who can't speak Chinese at the helm. Predictably, Visions sucked total ass and its studio immediately closed.
>>
>>3879533
The AI in the mana games can do stuff but in any serious fight, Zehnoa, Mispolm, Gandoom, etc, they're going to be floor tanking.
>>
>>3877568
i was checking into the mana series about 2 weeks ago, when i reached that game i wondered why...it might still be a fine game in itself but cant say i thought "i really wanna play this".
>>
>>3879461
Not at all. Tried a bunch of reshade settings. First time that made my eyes bleed from the smearing
>>
>>3879696
Trials is worse in every single way. Characters, story, combat, level design, art direction, visuals, world design, boss design. Even the pacing is worse.
The selectable party gimmick is all Trials as going for it, which ultimately isn't even interesting in this day and age since it's not done well.
Trials is a novelty at best.
>>
>>3880748
Wow, how rare. A singular Visions apologist who thinks Trials is somehow worse. Your opinion is interesting but good luck convincing anyone to believe that tripe.
>>
>>3877491
Ended up refunding SO6. Those text font sizes are unsat.
>>
>>3879377
I totally agree, open world is mostly pure bloat. Especially like what is shown in that image, where you leave a town and you have AN OPEN FIELD. Impressive when older games did it because it was technically impressive, but now has become a chore. And even back then it wasn't my favorite conceit.
>>
>>3880962

>>
>>3881604
The thing is, when older games seemed big, they really weren't all that huge. it was the illusion of creating a vast world either by tricks of scale and perspective or just making sure there things over there other than check marks for a list. Players want the sense of having a big adventure but actually having a huge treck is kind of boring and just burns out sooner rather than latter.

>>
>>3881608
Old games are good at that. So are modern indie games that aren't roguelites. But, I agree. The briskness of older games is something I really love.

>>3881610
A favorite example of this I use is Suikoden. It's a favorite game of mine, and each game in the series is quite explicitly limited in scale, most to one country. Even the first one is quite small, but with it's world map, and it's tendency to emphasize that there are other countries out there with other geopolitical concerns, it makes it feel very grand to me.

These are both comfort food JRPGs
Neither does anything particularly well, but they’re far from bad
They both look good, run well, play well, and sound nice
The plots are very 6/10; not terrible, not great
I think both series have far better entries (Trials and Legend of Mana, SO2 and 4), but these are totally fine

DQ11 if its your first. Play DQ3 when you're also ready to play 1&2 in that order.

If you want to branch out more, emulate DQ8 (PS2) and DQ5 (PS2). DQ5 for PS2 needs the English patch. Those are regarded as some of the best in the franchise.

Same, desu. I loved Squaresoft growing up, made some of my favorite games ever. I loved plenty of Enix games, too! Squeenix, however... has not impressed me once. I've tried, and I've tried again, but I have yet to play anything this company has put out that doesn't just feel like soulless cash-grab slop with recycled cardboard characters. Graphics have come a long way, but everything else just keeps getting worse.
>>
>>3882152
They're mid at best. They have charm but they are piss easy. I literally used autobattle through both games on everything, every boss included, and beat it. Full throttle high speed and everything just melted. I was able to level a lot because of the high speed option and so was OP for bosses, just fight every battle like that at full speed and don't skip enemies. You will beat it with zero issue except MAYBE one or two bosses in Lunar 2 as it is the harder game by far.

They're good but I would never ever replay them because of how easy they are. The stories are also meh, very charming, but so generic and it gets boring. Music is by far the weakest point of Lunar games.
>>
>>3881983
Play Raidou Remastered.
>>
>>3883821
Maybe JRPGs aren't for you then because that's most games.
>>
>>3883822
What's it like? Shill it to me.
>>
>>3883921
It's really not though. I can't auto-battle through Persona and SMT games. I love JRPGs but Lunar is egregiously bad when it comes to this. I still liked the games and would recommend them because they are extremely charming, wholesome experiences, but they still fall mid-tier for me.
>>
>>3884867
It's like you're this badass Devil Summoner dude who goes around forcing his justice down the throats of evil-doers with sick music, poppin' aesthetic, fluid and interesting combat, addictive progression systems, and a fun overall experience.
