People give it a pass because it wasn't Final Fantasy but it's Sega so it was able to be a B-level RPG with an immediately bigger and more audience than a Grandia or Star Ocean or Suikoden. Hell, one of the big knocks on Suikoden IV (since they're both ship jarpigs) is having too many encounters in it's overworld when Skies of Arcadia also has a high encounter rate AND much slower and more tedious gameplay in general to boot but it's something that people give SoA a pass for. All it's really got going for it is that Aika has a cute design.
