Not OP, but it's Babel Tower from Xenogears. It's a common example of a dungeon where the game's platforming gets annoying for people, since you can drop down a long way, and the random battles can sometimes mess with your jumping. But personally I didn't have much of an issue with it. I remember it being a pretty cool dungeon outside of that element, and the boss fight at the end is fun and memorable.

The pic is Tower of Babel from Xenogears. It's a toxic mix of frustrating platforming and random encounters, at a point in the game when the boring combat had worn out its welcome 20 hours ago (give or take). Iirc encounters can literally trigger mid-jump.

yes the great crystal really sucks but the lead up to it in Giruvegan is nearly just as bad, it's such a boring intro to one of the worst and ugliest-looking dungeons in the series, still love the game though

The great crystal is what I cite as a good idea (no map, but the area names describe where you are), but an awful execution. The fact every area looks the same and there's no map and the map itself uses crystalese names which are nonsensical and not explained anywhere on top of the gate/switch gimmick (which is already fucking horrible in general) adds up to "I will not fault you for looking up a solution, let alone a map".

FF12 has some amazing sprawling dungeons but Great Crystal is a tumor.

Look at this shit. The squares with a border are teleports to the matching color in the direction you enter them from. Some of them go to different floors though, one way of course. Then as a special fuck you the floor teleports go to different floors if you enter from different directions. There are two more floors connected like this weaving up and down but the last two are more filled with damage zones and wandering enemies that will absolutely kill you.

In SMT Strange Journey Redux the bonus dungeon was pretty bad with all the automatic floor arrows zipping you along and into holes over and over. Wrong, it's great. QoL added. It's definitely easier than the original but not on the highest difficulty, enemies will fuck you up badly even with all the extra stuff you get. Bosses are insane on a NG+ highest difficulty playthrough.

I just started that last night, and as immediately charming as the story is I did feel like dropping it in the Sult Ruins because of how claustrophobic the screen is. Navigating sucks and the birdseye view spots seem like a copout.
But the battle system really clicked, especially with the rockbird fight, and I love everything else about the game so I persevered.

They were all the same, with multiple center stairways with an open core. Real fucking shitty of them. Easily to get lost. And every floor had like 20 rooms in each direction.

Sooooo the easy way to get through this bullshit was to have a skill which they never fucking brought back because it was OPer than OP: climb.

Fucking spoderman down the center core, get what you need to get, climb tf back ho the center core. Avoid all encounters. Fuck yar.

so you get a loaded encounter, try to make a platforming jump and just walk off the edge

most of these are pretty good.
The only ones I'd bash are the sewers becuase they just have a lot of backtracking in them. Darkness could have the shadows follow you a bit better sure, but it's still a pretty cool idea, and it works out pretty well.
All the other ones are just filters for stupid people.

I was just about to post about the Tethe'alla dungeons lmao. They're all pretty tedious, though I never had issues with the pathfinding AI of the Shadow fragments in the GC version.

I don't think it's that anyone can't progress, it's just that when the dungeon gimmick isthat you have to backtrack through 80% of it to flick a switch equivalent it's hard to have fun.
