What are your favorite classes/roles in RPGs? I have always liked characters who can use speed buffs.
I tend to love the brute strength builds most in ARPGs, but all can be fun. Summoners/pet builds I shy away from but they were fun when I tried them. It's just great being able to face-tank eveything. I remember in Dark Souls I did that, same with II, then III made it like Bloodborne and I didn't like it.In Final Fantasy Tactics making Speed Ramza (sing the Speed Racer theme song in your head for maximum impact) by using Yell plus dancers and getting 2-3 turns before each enemy for most of the game is wonderfully fun.Debuffing is amazing in SMT games. Debilitate to lower ALL the enemy stats in one shot is so satisfying, and fuck the bosses who constantly negate it.But yeah, brutish face-tank builds are my favorite. In turn-based JRPGs I like the protag mostly due to being good at everything, but not great, jack of all trades thing.
Paladin.Party of all paladins, fuck it, let’s go.
Not a general character but as a playstyle I'd like to describe it as a lockdown/tank.Like if I can set up a situation where I negate what an enemy does and slowly but inevitably win. In FFX I loved using Auron with Guard + Evade&Counter for example.
Whats a good way to figure out what kind of character I want to play?
>>3886756Whatever seems the least retarded and annoying in the context of the game's design. Preferably something simple; fuck min-max muh multiclassed 6 times over half-lizard quarter mole and quarter arabgoblin autism. That is simply for losers
>>3886832>In FFX I loved using Auron with Guard + Evade&Counter for example.Good idea. Alternatively a buffed Tidus can be used with Provoke and a counter weapon early on.
I like applying mountains of status effects to enemies and watching them suffer
>>3886756Death knight Beeing a melee character is a requirement for me but I like having fun systems to play with. However I don’t care much for damage magic.Black Knight kinda characters ofthen get summons and fun debuffs on top of a melee moveset so they are usually my go to
>>3886837Have you never wondered whether you're having fun?
>>3886995Like the EQ1 Shadowknight class? Or the Pathfinder Blackguard? Or do you just mean the aesthetic of being an edgelord wearing black armor?
>>3886756I'm a sucker for hurling molotovs.Unfortunately most games negate it to an early game skill that is quickly outclassed.
Anything that is an aggressive, fast attacker with great movement, range, a variety of abilities, and a glass-cannon. Usually something lightly armored. Sometimes that can be the ranger of their game, the rogue, the assassin, duelist, or even the berserker. Being sneaky is a plus.Dragon's Dogma still has my favorite assortment of classes, with the Ranger, Assassin, Strider and Magick Archer being strong, fun classes. Quick, deadly, versatile, mobile.
>>3887141Dragon's Dogma 2 in particular, being the perfect iterative improvement over the first game, really does just fucking nail the action combat. I'm still kinda mystified by that game, I swear to fucking god. And I only spend some of the time gooning over playing dress up with my pawn
>>3886756Probably depends on the game, but when I was young, it was always a Paladin. A jack of all trades that can take hits, heal, and fight back let me feel pretty heroic because I could kill things and pull allies back from the brink, plus in very early JRPGs most other classes were fairly one dimensional (Casters just nuked things and fighters just hit things, so a class that could do a bit of everything was good). Predecessor to my love of Paladins was Red Mage in FF1, since RM had decent spells and a good attack.WoW was where I doubled down on Paladin life. It was even better there because I had actual humans in my party and I could fill in any role in a pinch. If the tank died, I could attempt to snap aggro and fill the role, if the healer went down, I went into emergency heal spam and hoped we could kill everything. Damage wasn't that great except in undead heavy instances, and then the class would shine.Far later in life, I picked up FFXIV, started leveling other classes I didn't play much, and became enamored with Black Mage. I just loved how powerful the class felt, the "nuke phase" of just unloading hard hitting Fire IV nukes and finishing off with a Flare and watching things die was a straight power fantasy that I didn't really get with any other class in an MMO.Very uncommon, but I liked to play Decker in Shadowrun, because Deckers operated on another layer of combat that meatspace characters don't touch. I can support them through compromising the network and turning an enemy's defenses against them, which was pretty cool.
>>3886756Mage-Tanks, and especially Absorption/Vamp Tanks. Mage in armor, using defensive spells and aoes, or life draining spells to keep sucking off the damage. I also quite like mages that do things like create walls and terrain, but this is a pretty rare thing for games to have.
>>3887082SEverQuest Shadow Knight specifically>tank character >but also summon skellingtons >also debuff people I love these edgelords,You can even get an evil katana. It’s a rare archetype tho. I guess WoW got it eventually.Pathfinders blackguard does similar things but is shit IIRC.3.5 had dark champion I think.ICONs Knave too.I don’t even care about the edginess I just like Tank battlefield control with utility magic on top I recently made an oblivion version by going>heavy armor>blunt>summon>illusion
>>3886792I always wondered if this works well in Diablo II without any mods or anything. Just paladins with different auras at maxed levels along with other things. I mean even without auras, 8 blessed hammer paladins would probably rape everything easily.
>>3890056Pal is my favorite class in d2 but holy shit blessed hammer is so boring and not fun to use. I refuse. Don’t care how good it is
>>3890063I agree it's boring to play a hammerdin but I never had until recently. I'm level 94 or something and solo'd the entire game with ease. It's fun to do once but I probably never would again. There is something cathartic about how silly you look just casting rotating, revolving hammers that wreck fucking everything.
Necromancer/mass summonerAny summon class that is based around weak individual mass unit tactics. Necromancer that are just edgy mages piss me offOrExtreme anti-mage specialist heavy armor battlemage/warrior If a game doesn't allow for at least one of these I generally dislike it
>>3886756I LOVE debuffers in games they're actually useful. Slowing enemies down, applying poison, sleep, lowering defenses and such. I'm more of a DRPG guy, but jrpgwise FFXIII does this the best imo.
>>3890081Did you prefer the witch doctor or the necromancer proper in Diablo III
>>3890088I didn't play Diablo 3. I have no interest in those games
>>3890088Modern entertainment industry made me allergic to playing as a black character. That said, skeletons in D3 are kinda ass visually.
>>3887385>It’s a rare archetype tho. I guess WoW got it eventually.Death Knights in Warcraft have been around since 1995 with Warcraft II.
I would like at least 5 games with a decent Druid class
Melee/Magic hybrid, specifically a fighter with some support magic. Infusing your weapon with an element, teleport gap closer, barriers for defense, etc. One or two big flashy spells as finisher are enough for me.I'm not picky with the visuals of the spells, but a two-handed weapon is non-negotiable. Don't come at me with wielding a wet noodle in one hand and the worst spells from the wizard's book in the other. But given that hardly any game even tries to make something like this I tend to for any fast attacker with a satisfying counter move.>>3887385>I don’t even care about the edginess I just like Tank battlefield control with utility magic on top Dragon's Dogma Online did their Tank classes sort of like this. They have a distinct armor class that vaguely matches wizard robes reinforced with metal bits. The job of tanks is to manage the enemies with status effects to manipulate boss phases(mostly keeping them locked down while the DPS goes ham). They also have utility magic like changing elements or party-wide invulnerability shields. The Shield Sage is the more physical tank where you channel some AoE spells to draw aggro and then beat the shit out enemies with your door. The Alchemist has a more agile playstyle where you counter and stack a debuff with your normal attacks. You can then detonate that debuff for a big explosion that applies a status of your choice. Your utility "magic" is about field manipulation: you put down a landmine or launchpad that lets your allies reach weak points or avoid attacks.
>>3887141>Quick, deadly, versatile, mobileAny class that fits this is fun to play.
>>38905951. The Mystery of the Druids2. The Mystery of the Druids3. The Mystery of the Druids4. Baldur's Gate 25. The Mystery of the Druids
anything with lifesteal so i don't have to worry about healing
>>3886756My absolute favorite class archetype is the final fantasy “Sage” archetype like Tellah was in FF4 or a character like Rab in DQXI.The reason for this is because I have an affinity for utility buff/debuff characters like bards but also mage characters especially healers.Sages were a character class that did a bit of everything on the magic side including offensive magic as well so it just became my favorite from that standpoint. My absolute favorite iteration of this archetype is pic related, the Scholar job from FFXI. It was the second best and both white magic and black magic putting it right below black mage and white mage in offensive and healing magic respectively but also being better than red mage in all forms of magic. It also specialized in hots/dots giving them an edge over the specialists in that area but what I loved about it was being a main healer that could also switch into black magic for magic bursts, not to mention the ability to debuff the shit out of the mob and also have stat buffs in the form of weather spells.
>>3890086Its not the best jrpg at this but it definitely is one of the better ones. Hope was my favorite character to use for a reason with Vanille as a second, characters that solely focus on support with very little offense. As far as jrpgs goes, my favorites with buff/debuff autism have to be the etrian and 7th dragon series but idk if thats what you mean by drpg.
>>3891325Too bad this often results in you still needing healing on top of having to deal with subpar damage.
>>3890086>>3891415Bros have you never played the SMT games? Play something like SMT III Nocturne or SMT V. The press-turn system mixed with the buff/debuff mechanics is phenomenal. It's the best turn-based JRPG has to offer from everything I've played, which is most turn-based games.Persona 3 through 5 also do this, as well as the older Digital Devil Saga titles.
>>3891475Yes I have all those games. And yes they are good at those kinds of mechanics but I still think FFXIII did it better as well as the etrian games (persona q as well) also done by fatlus. 7th dragon is also done by someone connected to the etrian games which explains the similarities.FFXIII’s battle system is extremely underrated for people who like things like buffs and debuffs in rpgs because the game has characters that focus solely on doing that with Hope and Vanille and you get a large variety of buffs and debuffs as well.
>>3886756I like strategy games so summoners or necromancers or just anything with minions.Otherwise it's warrior/mage hybrid which usually ends up with a paladin.
>>3886756What are your favorite classes/rolesHuman, male, fighter
>>3890086Debuffing in FFXIII was great. Especially against Vercingetorix, the Ci'eth superboss. I don't think I could have beaten him without drowning him in every debuff imaginable.
>>3886756There should be classes that don't shine in the field, but in other areas. Basically a bard that's not a fighting or casting machine.
>>3887154>being the perfect iterative improvement over the first game>removes some of the classes>removes secondary weapons from classes>removes any weapon overlap from classes>removes skills from classesNigger what? It doesn't even have all the classes from 1. 1 is leagues ahead of 2.
>>3887385Based EQ enjoyer. I played a Paladin for 13 years, no alts ever. Absolutely the most fun I ever had in a vidya. Tanking in EQ was a real art.
>>3886832>Auron with Guard + Evade&Counter for example. This is really good, I should have tried it sooner>cast haste on Auron so he goes before enemies>guard>watch as he evades and counters all enemiesI also gave Auron Provoke with the Special sphere, and it can be even better, since provoked enemies only use one move. For example behemoths default to an attack that Auron always evades and counters, making those fights real easy. It also seems those robots who usually kick characters off the battle don't resort to it when provoked.
>>3898701>no alts ever.This guy paladins.
>>3886756Gambler!Failing that, Blue Mage-type characters are always fun.
>>3898991Btw Provoke worked on the Spectral Keeper. Makes the fight better when you can direct its attacks.
>>3899019Forgot to say that Lulu's Reflex made it possible to even evade the attacks. Protect and defending goes without saying.
>>3898701EQ ended at PoP, and the PoK was a mistake. And the reason private servers are dying is because they almost all allow boxing and their custom balance changes are sloppy ad hoc bullshit designed to make the game play more like Diablo.Proj Laz ironically is the best feeling non-boxing experience until you get to Vex Thal and Time, even though it's a full-boxing server with absolutely fucking STUPID balance decisions in late game (the changes that the server dev has actually been involved with). Also the server is owned and operated by notorious grifters and drug addicts who've been in and out of court over various charges related to the money laundering schemes they've been involved in (start in P99 before they were kicked out).Don't play in or support anything Aporia has been involved with. Ever. Fucking ever.I haven't tried Quarm because I'm just not interested in the originalist style of old EQ. Because pre-Luclin EQ was actually pretty anti-fun and hilariously unbalanced in so, so many ways. Not like Luclin was perfect, but at least focuses and AAs were an interesting concept that expanded actual gameplay. Also custom servers never do anything about the lack of content and broken quests. You walk into a city and there's literally nothing to do there because NPCs have no dialogue and there are no quests which work. It's the perfect thing for server devs to work on because it's literally just plain text echoes, but they never do it.I haven't tried Dalaya because I hear it's an entirely custom experience and very low population.
>>3886756Debuffer, tank, healer.
