What RPG do you think has the most fun Turn Based Combat?
What's the one you personally had the most fun with and why?
>>
Paper Mario 64, TTYD, and Bug Fables

I've played every turn-based RPG I can get my hands on for decades, and I just keep coming back to those games. I like stuff that is purely choosing attacks from menus too, but something about the timed button-presses makes the game more engaging. It's juuust difficult enough to keep me engaged in every single battle against random enemies while also succeeding most of the time. Plus I like badges/medals to customize the playstyle. It's a bit like materia from FF7, probably my next favorite turn-based battle system. I like being able quickly equip/unequip a bunch of stuff to radically change how combat works for specific characters.

Any TB RPG that has batshit amount of variety of buff/debuffs (plus if they can interact with each other), enemy variety, viability of different playstyles
Among those are Mainline Pokemon, FF7, Devil Survivor
Chained Echoes gets a honorable mention, although I do think the weakness & resistance system is too rigid (enemies have no resistance, and weaknesses are always just a singular element).
FnH2 is also pretty good despite being more of a horror and survival game at its heart.

My brother in Christ, please tell me you didn't pick FatNigress-chi as your starter.

Final Fantasy 10, since it gives enough information to base decisions on. A turn-based game showing turn order. Sensor weapons showing enemy info. Clear feedback showing the effectiviness of your actions.

FFX has the best but I had the most fun in SMT4.
Press Turn is simple and satisfying and there's enough variety in encounter design to keep it interesting.

these are basic features in like 90% of games
I can only assume you've only played like 2 games max in your life

That's pretty accurate, if it's turn-based games released after 2000

Pokeman Gen2 and FireRed.
Pokemans Mystery Dungs.
DOOMRL.
SaGa Frontier.

This is 100% recency bias for me, but the new Atelier Resleriana game has really enjoyable turn based combat for me.
Mainly because of the mechanic where previous characters that acted before your current one, if its an unbroken chain, join you and go off of your skill.
So it doesn't feel like you used your entire characters turn on buff/debuff or heal because previous character in the chain will trigger his skill and get some damage on the enemy.

Also comes with interrupt attacks that put you ahead in turn continuing the chain and swap out attacks where both character going out and character getting swapped in do a skill instead of wasting a turn on swap etc..

I use to like Octopath, primarily due to the "brave" system they have in the games with expending resources to get additional actions.

Swaping characters without spending a turn was my favorite part of it. You got to use your entire party in combat and not just 3 of them

Hajimari no Kiseki.

Mana Khemia, Breath of Fire 4, some of the newer Ateliers. Any game that lets you tag in reserve members to protect you or do extra attacks are great.

Enchant Farm.

FFX's gameplay is way too basic for my taste. It mostly just comes down to using the right character against the right enemy (Tidus for fast monsters, Wakka for flying monsters, etc). Also the maps are extremely linear with no exploration.

At times I wished 7 and 8 had swapping, although there there's less reason to do so.

I decided to spend this christmas playing X. The intro already got me in the mood, it may be my favorite intro of all time. Now I'm listening to the menu music loop as I pour a glass of whisky and write this post.
I've been thinking about getting copies of X-2 and 12 on PS2, so maybe next year I'll start those.

E33 is one of the few RPGs where I was willingly jumping into every small enemy because I enjoyed the combat that much, your mileage may vary if you don't like the parry aspects but I found it fun.
For JRPGs, Emeral Beyond has an amazing combat system and it's pretty much the main reason to play the game even though it's far from my favorite SaGa game.
