Absolutely incredible music, from all three games. but some of the corniest, annoying characters ever in the FF series.

Hope is the only reason why I stopped playing this game about 2 hours in, I couldn't stand him. Snow and his girlfriend were also annoying because of the weird high school level of love story shit that was going on with them.

It's a decent game; it's not awesome or anything, but it doesn't deserve the hate either.
Just be prepared for characters that are beat down, broken, flawed and angry. You can empathize with them, but don't don't expect them to be likeable or relatable.

NTA. I have been played FF 1-10 + Tactics, and 9 would be in my bottom two. I think the only worse one is 2. Any of the SNES or PSX titles mog 9, even goofy-ass 8. 9 is extremely overrated.

mechanically, battles are honestly pretty fun, but the game doesnt give you enough real challenge for most of the time to actually dig into the ATB mechanics imo, so the otherwise fun battles turn into boring bullshit

I agree, nothing wrong with basic done well. 4 is a simple classic and has aged well as a result. I think its only real flaw is that your party composition is 100% locked for the entire game by your story progress, so you never have any opportunities to experiment with party compositions.
4 used to fulfill the role among 90s FF fanboys that 9 does now: a game to namedrop to bolster one’s “old school cred” relative to newer fans. The series got a ton of new players with the massively popular 7, and so 4 was popular with the SNES players as a sort of proto-hipster “I liked FF before it was cool”. You see the same thing today with praising 9 because it’s a heckin’ old school RETVRN TO FORM after the experimental jank of 8, even though 9 sucks and any of the SNES FFs are better games.

Until then, the fastest version of ATB streamlines a lot of things. And it seems less complex than earlier games. Not that earlier games were open world experiences, but FFXII had part of the WM explorable pre-endgame. This game doesn't carry that. The sequences improve greatly when Square finally makes the ATB work as real-time combat. Things like limit breaks and summons are seamless. It's crazy how people dismiss these games, but they are a natural evolution of the formula. But if you want more classic FF, play Bravely Default/Octopath games. They rework the combat from the classic games with a bunch of QOL goodies.

it just also likes to throw a bunch of made up words and concepts at you with little to no contextual clues as to wtf anything is/means
it hinges pretty heavily on you actually bothering to read the journal or whatever its called entries

By far one of the worst ff games:
-Combat system would be decent fi you didn't need to spend 20+ hours to unlock everything and actually get to do something. And by that point only the super secret bosses pose any challenge.
-Story is just outright bad.It doesn't have the batshit stupidity of 8 or the typical ff story of other entries. It is just stupid.
-World exploration is nonexistent for 15+ hours.

It just sucks and the resident ff13 schizo is gonna keep making these threads.

I'd argue 9 has by far the biggest fall off. Yeah it was one of the best openings in the franchise, but that hurts it when it has the worst final act of the ps1 titles, which is saying something when all of their final acts fall off.
