What am I in for? Should I use this to make my game, instead of RPG Maker?
Anon! You've got to travel to the four areas to grab the four things!Thank you
>>3905766Not just any old four areas, it has to be the four elemental temples. Which for some reason are the firmament upon which the metaphysical basis of reality rests.
>>3905761>base gameSkeleton warriors and trash mobs as far as the eye can see. Get the four things. Get the three things. Get the three things again. Several too-strong bosses in areas that prohibit resting.NO FUCKING EXP EVER>undrentideKino low level adventure, though a bit heavy on riddles>hordes of the underdarkLudicrous itemisation towards the end (there's a required boss that needs +7 weapons to hit) but otherwise an alright romp. Has pretty much everything you'd expect from an underdark adventure.>Should I use this to make my game, instead of RPG Maker? It is much more limited than RPG maker, but there is an audience for kickass modules if you just want to tell your story and can design areas/encounters well.
>>3905761Don't play as a Rogue. There's barely anything of note in chests and everything is fucking immune to sneak attacks.
Get a martial class (fighter/ranger/paladin/barbarian) your first time around. It's a D&D client but it plays more like Diablo, you mow over tons of mobs.
>>3905801>There's barely anything of note in chestsThe actual issue is that it's incredibly easy to just bash open every locked chest>>3905805Druid and Cleric are fine too, buffs and animal companions are great for wading through chaff as well.
>>3905805Barb or Monk is the only sane option for the original campaign solely because of the increased movement speed, it makes the backtracking and way-too-big dungeons far more tolerable.
>>3905761You can't make a game in aurora, you can make a map or adventure for nwn.
A Dance with Rogues, my beloved.
>>3905761>Should I use this to make my game, instead of RPG Maker? You can't make a commercial game with it so assuming you're just doing it for fun, would your premise be better served by 3e D&D or a 2d JRPG?
>>3905761Also if you like story I highly recommend a module series called The Prophet.
>>3905813>You can't make a game in aurora*laughs in Witcher*
>>3905907Really? Now I get why I had that feeling in the woods in w1. How come they were allowed to use it for free?
>>3905928I’m guessing that it wasn’t free, and that they paid to license the engine, but that’s speculation on my part
>>3905929>>3905761I that case I expect a world class rpg.
>>3905761You should focus on storytelling, the combat in NWN is meh and there is already a module serie called Swordflight which is the absolute peak of NWN build autism.
NWN is one of the better version of DND 3.0 out there. The base game is fine, and the expansions are pretty great. But the real point of NWN is that it's a framework for people to make their own campaigns and quests, and download modules. Some suggestions would be getting the PRC mod which adds a ludicrous amount of classes, spells, races, etc. https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/hakpak/original-hakpak/player-resource-consortium-500Really best advice is browse some forums to download some good lengthy modules, and have fun with one of the more authentic DND 3.0 experiences on the market. If you want similar, I'd also suggest trying The Temple of Elemental Evil by Troika, absolute KINO. https://store.steampowered.com/app/3843520/The_Temple_of_Elemental_Evil/And the indie Low Magic Age, which is flatly the best capture of DND 3.5 on the market. It also adds one small homebrew change that's just...oh my god it's amazing. If you overroll (Armor class of 15, you roll an effective 29), anything over the required number to hit becomes added damage with Power Attack. This makes martials really competitive. Low Magic Age is 60% off. https://store.steampowered.com/app/576770/Low_Magic_Age/
>>3905761Maybe? I have played some genuinely fantastic modules, I can not for the life of me remember the names, wish I could, the best one was a kind of D&D / Zelda hybrid with village sim elements and hidden collectibles you could detect with your listen and search skills.
>>3905988Why? What's new with this module?
>>3905766there's other things to grab besides the four quest things
>>3905792lol doesn't have infinite gold pieces in hotu.... haha
>>3906047Nta but why are there +7 weapons in the underdark and nothing comparable in nwn?
>>3906073>why are there +7 weapons in the underdark and nothing comparable in nwn?Because number bloat, and a 1-20 campaign vs an “epic” campaign
>>3906075Thought as much. He has a point then. >>3905792Why was it kino, forgot everything.
>>3906076>Why was it kino, forgot everythingAct 1 is kinda assAct 2 is a fun generic Bioware adventure in a cool settingAct 3 is also a fun adventure in a cool setting
>>3906537I did like the setting. Was it floating or underground ruins? Scorpions everywhere and deekin, too. The dragonbard.>act 3What happened there?
>>3906574Are you talking about SoU or HotU? I was talking about the latter. The act 1 in SoU is the strongest, and while the rest of the module is weaker, it's still full of creative encounters.
>>3906599I do remember things of hotu here and there. So few good games, I really might replay nwn complete and the cool nwn2 expansions.>a1 souWhat happened? AFAIK it's a new hero, not the nwn one.
>>3906602Yup, SoU and HotU are the same character and intended to be imported from one into the other. Not the character from the OC.
>>3906602The NWN2 OC is weak compared to modern AAA titles, but was still a very respectable "generic farmboy becomes hero" archetypical story. It was an oh-so-deep philosophical meditation session like MotB or a mechanically tight open world sandbox like SoZ, but it has its own place.
>>3906757>but it has its own placeSo many years ago, today.
>>3906754>Not the character from the OCNot me, used one character. Gave me back my equipment as well, because the dm can s*** my ****. Fucker thinks he can steal my shot, uhuh.>>3906757Apparently it's nwn but with a party. Dropped the oc and never looked at the dlc, but am waiting for some rpg, so I might as well try soz and motb.
>>3906757Did the rereleases let the game run multicore? Because I remember that fucking KILLED it that shortly after it was released multicore processors became a thing and each core was weaker than previous processors but NWN2 would only use one core and get bottlenecked hard.

>>3906574>>3906599>>3906602SoU really dropped the ball in the final act. Undrentide was incredibly underwhelming for the buildup, the tileset was bland and did not evoke "ancient powerful civilization" at all, also the kill 10 golems / kill 4 winds quests sucked.HOTU has a god-tier act 2 and 3. The Sleeping Man was an incredible plot hook.My only reason to slog through the OC was the Linu is best girl
>>3907262>SoU really dropped the ball in the final act.SoU was dogshit from start to finish.
>>3907268Getting the paladin gear in the tomb was extremely based
>>3907258Nah it's the Gate Guardian in the puzzle dungeon
>>3907268The dragon villain in act 1 was mildly amusing
>>3907298Ohhhh yeah I remember that guy took forever to kill. Also I didnt like that he just had the Sload character model. All of the demons just had the same 3 models recycled over and over again, even the bosses
You can make stuff if you want but fair warning I'm pretty sure they were fags about the licensing and will steal the rights to anything you make.
>>3907421What if I troll facedly add my module as its own standalone game (using their engine) and host it on random obscure websites?
>>3907262>tileset was blandThat I remember well.>HOTU has a god-tier act 2 and 3Something like that rings a bell, yeah. Iirc the enemies in hotu are pretty strong.>linuAribeth? Did take the fighter elf as well. The monk wasn't too bad neither. Conceptually, that is.
>>3905761>use this to make my game, instead of RPG Makeralways wondered why nobody does this, skill issue I guess
>>3907499Just learned recently that witcher is made in aurora. It's a priori a decent tool for retro games. I wonder how hard it is to change the framework, like skip 3.5 entirely. If that's straight forward, it's an obvious choice.
>>3907499Because the engine is commercial and you'd have to license it from Bioware or whoever actually owns it right now. The toolkit that comes with NWN is extremely powerful, but it still only makes content for Neverwinter Nights itself. You can't make a standalone game with it.

>>3905761One of the best parts about NWN is that a low charisma playthrough is literally an incel simulator. You are locked out of romances if you are low CHA. Even the prostitutes reject you. Town guards and random NPCs will comment on how you look like shit. Other games like Fallout might do caveman-speak low INT playthroughs but no one since NWN has been brave enough to have low CHA dialogue.
>>3907440I'm not a copyright lawyer, so I can't tell you if you'd be good or not.Me personally I'd think maybe someone could develop a FOSS alternative so nobody has to consider this bullshit

Is it a crazy take that I enjoyed A Dance with Rogues way more than the official campaigns? I'm so tired of world ending high fantasy shlock where the story takes a backseat to dungeon crawling
>>3908150You cannot even buy NWN anymore without buying EE. Also, some new modules and content releases only on EE, so, if you want to enjoy everything, you have to have both. Still, who would get money from Diamond sales, I hope it's not fucking Bioware.
>>3908265The module I enjoyed the most was the Aielund saga. Plenty of modules are better than the OC and the ofgicial expansions.
>>3908265>I'm so tired of world ending high fantasy shlock where the story takes a backseat to dungeon crawlingNo, we all are. Everyone is. Its fucking boring and nothing is worse than ultra high stakes that are essentially no stakes because all you do is crunching 120938 goblins under your heels for hours and thats how you save the universe.
>>3906031Swordflight is a sweatfest module that demands you optimize your build and use every tool you have.
>>3908265>Is it a crazy take that I enjoyed A Dance with Rogues way more than the official campaigns? It's the best class-focused module ever made, so no. There are a lot of professional developers who could learn a lot from its approach to design.
>>3908265Nah it's pretty great. What surprised me the most about it is the sense of progression where you go from a pickpocket (or whore) who can barely afford a shitty weapon to a super thief full of magic items.
>>3909475Agreed. Many games try to rush the player out of low levels as quickly as possible, but adwr does a good job of making you appreciate those early levels where every tiny bonus you can collect counts.
Reminder that someone is making a mod for proper party control.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqFa5bVpTbUhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQb47cj4FUM
>>3909498>>3909475something also neat is that there's a couple of stores that sell super high end gear for adventurers during part 1and you'll never be able to afford it, it's just sitting there staring at you and also neat is that unless you go really out of your way to find things, the first time you're truly loaded up with magical items is during your first actual dungeon crawl and it's aftermath, sorta recontextualizing the previous part of the game as essentially the backstory to your typical rogue course that dungeon crawl is kinda designed to turn you off from wanting to be a professional dungeon crawler
>>3908265NWN's portraits were pretty hot. I masturbated to lots of them
Have any new notable campaigns come out in the last few years? Only one I can think of is doom of icewind dale. >>3906761I only played this shit once and this line is still burned into my brain.>>3907268First act is pretty good imo, plenty of chances to roleplay and solve problems your own way. Not a masterpiece or anything but its cool. The rest of the campaign is meh.
last time i replayed this i liked undrentide much more than hordes, the encounters and gameplay felt a lot more balanced. i'm not sure if it is just because it was an epic level campaign and they need to make it beatable for extremely trash builds but the combat in hotu was ultra trivial.
>>3911807NWN portraits look good as miniatures but once you see them full-sized you notice how hideous they are.
>>3907530
>>3913197That's true of a lot of videogame art from the era of low resolutions.
>>3907502>I wonder how hard it is to change the framework, like skip 3.5 entirely. That's what CDPR did. They also replaced parts of the rendering engine.
>>3911578>and you'll never be able to afford it, it's just sitting there staring at you You can afford a couple of things, if you plan carefully (ex. upgrade your lockpicking skill at every level up, and buy potions/tools which increase it, so you can unlock those 2-3 chests with shittons of gold scattered across Part 1). Or, if you're a cheater, you can edit the skill to the required value.
>>3913645Also, when stuff starts costing several thousand gold, a high Appraisal skill becomes pretty useful.
>>3912980Its just that dnd is shit on epic levels and even more so the 3.0 video game adaption. Nwn has a kind of linear progression where at some point you just become borderline invincible so the only option is to let you fight other borderline invincibles making it essentially gambling how many 20's you roll to actually even hit each other and whoever managed to chip away 400+ HP first this was wins, having encounters that shit 40 death effects over you at once so one will critical failure 1 your ass without immunity or you end up with hordes of the underdark thrown at you to mash trough. Nwn has shit tactics anyway but epic levels get stale real fast.
>>3913667>it essentially gambling how many 20's you roll to actually even hit each other and whoever managed to chip away 400+ HP first this was winsAn epic fight toes-to-toes with dozens of strikes in the blink of an eye masterfully evaded and blocked by both sides.>having encounters that shit 40death effects over you at once so one will critical failure 1 your ass without immunityA long arduous preparations to encounter the monster nobody else could brave before, air cracking from the very death being in every inch around you in the fight itself.>or you end up with hordesthrown at you to mash troughHero fighting through armies of enemies are the very definition of epic. You just lack imagination and are jaded by various modern games, anon. Your attitude is your own undoing. Not your experience with epic adventures in hundreds of games, but only your attitude.Take some rest from games, rethink a bit and begin anew - making your imaginatiin to work and turning off your cynical irony parser, try taking it at the face value.

The hard part will be doing Twilight in part 4-3 because it has a ton of enemies in there that are crit immune and need +6 weapons to hit, and I'm pretty sure there aren't any scythes better than Gaston's scythe until after you clear it and can buy +7s from the store there.
>>3924843>cythes are under-itemised in this module, and they kind of are, but it hasn't fucked me too badly yetWhat saves you is the fact that Aielund has the same enchanting system as Hordes of Underdark. >>3905769And located entirely within the mortal material plane of existence surrounded by unruly bandits and corrupt kingdoms, not to mention monster-infested forests.
>>3905813You can. You just have to learn how to copy characters in between those maps. The reason quests always gave you items to keep track of is that those items are literally the mechanism by which to track quest progress, because when you zone into a new map, the engine is copying your character to create a new one in the new map... including your inventory and everything. But characters do not have internal data structures to track variables like what quest stage you're at...
>>3928637Summons reducing exp isn't that big of a deal anyway. Larger parties spawn more monsters and the increased power from having a summon out more than makes up for the slight reduction in exp.

>>3905761I'm planning on playing SoU/HoTU and I want to make ranger/rogue work. I want to level mainly Ranger to keep my animal companion decently leveled but I'd also like to handle traps/locks. Is this doable? I forgot how many different skills 3.0/3.5 has compared to later editions.
>>3929055Should be. Rogue gets tons of skill points. If you take Rogue every 4th level you should be able to skill dump up to your max in pick locks / disarm traps. I don't think their DCs are too insane in those modules that you'd get ripped off doing that compared to a more steady progression.
>>3929055>I want to level mainly Ranger to keep my animal companion decently leveled but I'd also like to handle traps/locks. Is this doable?Definitely, Rogue/Ranger is one of the classic multiclasses for a reason. Excellent skill coverage, tons of skill points, Ranger gets access to sneak attack, Rogue skills and Uncanny Dodge; Rogue gets access to dual-wielding feats for free. The usual approach is to focus on leveling your primary class and mix in a level of Rogue every so often to pump your skills, usually when your skill rank hits a multiple of 5 (so level 7 for 10 base ranks in a skill, 12 for 15, etc.), or you can just space it out evenly like the other anon said. If you're playing SoU into HotU Ranger is really good if you can hit 21 and get Bane of Enemies, too. There are a lot of skills, but you don't need to keep all your class skills maxed out at every level and some skills will be completely useless for certain builds (Concentration does nothing if you're never planning on casting a spell in combat; you won't care about Hide and Move Silently if you never plan to sneak). Even for skills you do want to keep maxed like Open Locks and Disable Device, you can Take 20 on those if you're not in combat so you don't need as many points in them as you'd think to meet the required DCs.

>>3929814>would it be better to start as a rogue for even more skill pointsPretty much always, yeah, unless you really need the level one proficiencies/bonus feat for something. I would start with one level of Rogue, then focus on levelling Ranger until you start noticing you're falling behind on lock/trap DC or level 7 (which lets you get 10 ranks in Open Locks, Disable Device, Tumblr and UMD). You can fit another level of Rogue somewhere in your first 10 if you want Uncanny Dodge.
>>3929055I played SoU/HotU a few times through back in the day. Is there anything that absolutely doesn’t work?
>>3930272All the official campaigns are pretty easy and in SoU+HotU you get companions so any character should eventually be able to brute-force it, but something like a Dwarf Cleric/Bard/Wizard (terrible BAB, only low-level spellcasting and 40% experience penalty) is not going to have a particularly fun time. Even something more sane like a Paladin/Sorc can struggle if built poorly, especially once you hit HotU where bosses have heaps of immunities.
>>3930272I had troubles as an unarmed monk. Some enemies have just too bonkers DR for this build. HotU gives you a very powerful enchanting system so if you don't use it, you are gimping yourself hard. In hindsight, I could have gotten a powerful kama and equipped it when an enemy demanded a weapon +7 but in my defense, it was my first run of HotU.
>>3929377Bastard of Kosigan got fixed? That's cool. I played it years ago and had big problems with the second and fourth modules.
>>3928945slut
>>3930908Yeah, the infamous problem with Chapter 2 where it would crash on trying to load saves (so you had to finish the whole thing in one go) was, iirc, caused by an issue in the module code created when the module was originally translated. I remember seeing people post about it on the nwnvault page years ago and they should host the fixed version now, but in saying that I've never checked personally because I always used my own fixed file. I haven't replayed it in a while so I should probably check their version.I don't recall there being any serious problems with Chapter 4. Was it the game not properly recognising the choices you made in previous modules, like siding with your bastard half- brother ?
