>guy in a tavern straight up tells you he's shaking up locals and has been for the past few months to settle his gambling debtWhat will your character do? Will he/she:a) do exactly what he tells you and help him steal some innocent elf's life savingsb) just ignore itthose are your only choiceshere's your RPG bro
Honestly, story doesn't even belong in video games. Dark Souls had a relatively good idea in its attempt to minimize boring crap like cutscenes and characters never shutting up, but it didn't go far enough. See, people fall into this dangerous trap where they think it's okay for a game to have a little story and a little talking and dialogue, but when you tolerate the existence of cancer, it propagates and becomes worse. Infact I'd argue that the existence of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger are directly responsible for modern day movie games like TLOU and Uncharted. I would gladly erase every JRPG from existence if it meant Druckmann and David Cage would leave the industry, or better yet never enter it in the first place.>nooo but I need muh contextThen go read a book. You hate video games and don't care about gameplay quality.
Look mom I posted it again
I agree with this, but unironically.
TES games are stylistically designed to be dungeon crawlers first and the idea all rpgs need to be like bioware games has significantly damaged the genre
The only thing that separates an rpg from any other type of game is choice. Other games have stats, other games have stories. There are no mechanics unique to rpgs.

how many posts before we agree that morrowind is a 5/10 game elevated to 8/10 thru its eerie ambiance (yet again) ?

>>3908035So you're fine with dragons and other fantasy creatures, lizard people, shooting lighting out of your hands, magic rings, elves... but the hero of the story witnessing a crime in motion having the drive to do something about it is too "unrealistic" to you?

>>3906517>running around in a silent world No story no agency no fun
>>3906517Videogames have tried to have stories since the very beginning, when the limited hardware forced developers to include most of the lore and plot solely in the manual. To imply an entire media shouldn't feature stories is as absurd as stating every movie ever should've only been visuals with zero narrative delivered via actors standing there talking, or music needing to be only instruments with no relevant lyrics.>I'd argue the existence of JRPGs are directly responsible for modern day moviegamesYou're an idiot.
