Chameleon is unreliable. You need to cast it at max power to have a real chance at avoidance, and early on your casters will often flub a max power cast. Plus, some mobs will focus you before you cast it, meaning they'll still come at you even with it active.
Sticking your ass into a corner + hypnotic lure + crowd control spells (web, fear, sleep, insanity, heck, even the basic itching skin) are the way to go.

Forgot to add, you should powergame by making your Bard and Gadgeteer female, so they can use those +stamina regen medallions. Those two classes are basically stamina casters, and having double the regen is very handy.

Not Necessary. Amulet Regen works outside of combat, but in combat the regen is minimal even with 2 necklaces, you'll still need potions/stamina/rest all to keep up the casting.

you can even import wiz 6 and 7 saves for slightly higher starting stats + instant level 5 and/or stupid shit like multiple godrings because some guy (probably bought a strategy guide) and read that he had to tell a big-tittied dragon in wiz6 that he loved her at some point in the last three decades and decided to be a bro and upload his rigged saves. I have one with fucking SIX.

warning: don't roll four polearm fighters and beeline it to marten's bluff asap to buy stun rods if you want the game to be an actual challenge. it's still hard even with that but you will roll the shit out of everyone if you don't die to gay instant death spells or all those faggot monks at gayjin. enjoy, boys o7

I used 4 primary casters plus bard and gadgeteer, it's often said that offensive casters do not scale well into late game and it's true if you have 1-2 of them, but a full party of them destroys fights in a couple of turns with huge aoe spells.

Is this game some autistic combat simulator or is it actually immersive? Any recommended mods for a beginner to the series?

I hate JRPGs so I always assumed I'd hate a turn based series like Wizardry

It's one of the relatively rare attempts at making a modernized version of an old-school game. It's pretty straightforward in terms of mechanics, not much sweatlording involved (the combats themselves are brutal, but that's because of that shit difficulty scaling everybody was jerking off to in the early-mid-00s).
As for mods, IIRC there was a missing item fixpack, which added the Demon Doll, and components for the Watchdog Alarm. And the combat speedup mod is pretty useful.

Fighters tend to have the most straightforward progression.
>rangers (and auxiliary ranged chars like bards/gadgeteers)
Raise the stat (Dex, I think? Been over 15 years since last I played it) which increases number of attacks per combat round, have the gadgeteer craft a tripleshot crossbow for the ranger, boost the gadgeteer's Engineering skill (upgrades the Omnigun), use ranged weapons with secondary effects (slow, stun, kill etc).

Direct damage spells are kinda shit once you move past early trash mobs (crabs, rats, ants). Spellcasters are better used for crowd control (paralyze, sleep, insanity, that sort of thing) and buffs. You can give them wrist rockets (I think that's the highest tier sling weapon), in fact it's recommended, but they'll never get super-high damage.
