un squadron is meant to be played without buying any upgrades if you're playing for high score. For high-score runs , players rely heavily on skill, memorization, and collecting in-level power-ups (which increase the main gun's power) rather than shop-bought items. This approach requires a high level of execution and a deep understanding of game mechanics to overcome the intended difficulty curve without using the designed resource management system like a normal braindead rpg would have you progress

Savants are a thing, retards are capable of memorization but that doesn't mean people want to waste time doing in on some bullet hell shooter. So there's no audience for it and no one to develop it.

I enjoyed Tyrian 2000 and I think if you were going to develop a shmup RPG then you have to take it and go further with it. Way more branching paths, more secret levels, and "quests" where you can do an optional 1 more super-hard minute of a level or a side task like don't kill any ships colored green and you get rewards for doing it like new weapons to purchase or an entire enemy type changing. Maybe you can acquire traits for the pilot that change the gameplay a little. I don't know, I don't remember any shmup really mixing genres and ideas.

Tyrian is an amazing game and I wish there were more like it.

shump genre gets more niche each year passed and mixing it with rpg isn't what few shumpfags left wants because thats against their autistic code where if you don't 1cc/kill the TLB you are garbage and didn't beat the game. used to follow that stupid code until i realized i never had fun doing and after finishing 1cc runs
there is upcoming sigma saga DX though i really wish they make a sequel instead

Hey guys, OP here
I know there are other RPG shmups from Tyrian, but none of them actually make the gameplay fun. I was more so asking if there are any where the shmup part is actually enjoyable to play.

Can you really call Tyrian a shmup though? Like, when considering the core intentions of the game design, it's not really about shooting and dodging in a 2d plane, just watching all the explosions while wildly flailing around and then you get to buy some wacky new gun with the money you collected. Doesn't feel like a shmup at all.
It has more in common with those old "desktop destroyer" stress relief "games" than with other "shmups"

Ginga Force and Natsuki Chronicles are two shmup RPGs, the latter came out just 4 years ago. You faggots pretend these don't exist because they actually have fundamentally solid gameplay though.

those aren't rpgs those are shmups because they depend totally on player skill to progress and beat, you have to actually "Git Gud" as a player to win and can't rely on your ship as a crutch -- the exact opposite of rpgs, while an rpg necessarily puts more emphasis on character progression to progress and beat the game.

Tyrian's problem is that if you're doing a run through all the episodes you peak quite fast in terms of ship power where you can just hold down space bar. There's only a couple levels I recall having issues with stuff like generator power.

On higher difficulties this gets better because it's closer to the pure shmup bullet hell experience. They also rely more on these secret moves every ship has which you need to combo in mid level to get them although they might disabled on the highest secret difficulty.

I actually wonder if people who complain about Tyrian being too forgiving have looked up the 3 secret difficulties that you can just unlock right in the menu by pressing a button. Maybe Lord of the Game difficulty would be right up their alley.

The problem is lord of the game difficulty doesn't actually make the game fun. Artificially increasing the difficulty by making every enemy a bullet sponge and their bullets super fast doesn't actually make the gameplay fundamentally work. It doesn't remove the inertia, it doesn't make the level design interesting, it doesn't make the bosses more than just two patterns spammed over and over, etc.
