Every SNES/SFC I've played so far, excluding the FF/DQ series.
>>3918301Some of those games have MSU-1 BGM hacks that elevate the experience for me.https://www.zeldix.net/Also, check romhacking.net for QoL patches.
>>3918310Using mods invalidates opinions
>>3918314Nah mods make everything better
>>3918310I've never heard a single MSU-1 hack that doesn't sound like garbage. The original SNES samples pretty much always have better composition because they were made by people who actually knew what they were doing.
>>3918326By virtue MSU-1 already sounds better because it's CD quality audio. You just have dusty ears stuffed with nostalgia.
>>3918315Yes that's my point. Someone emulating with emulation features and using hacks can have a wildly different experience.I'm not opposed to improving games with these, mind you.
>>3918330Here's the kicker, nobody cares unless you bring something different to the table. There have been thousands of "tier lists" made and people already figured out the pattern of placements. Mods forces people to reevaluate the games for better or worse.
>>3918329>By virtue MSU-1 already sounds better because it's CD quality audiolol no. It sounds "clearer", but that doesn't equate to "better". The fact that you can't differentiate those two concepts already shows that you're a tasteless, disingenuous dolt and your opinions should not be taken seriously.
>>3918335>Already going to ad-homsThere is no merit to be had here nor in your post. I knew what you meant originally but your matter of "taste" isn't objective either. MSU-1's don't invalidate the original score but instead compliment it and breathe new life into it giving a different experience. Being a Luddite doesn't make you right nor superior in any regard whatsoever.

>>3918301doubt it
>>3918301Surprised you'd put Glory of Heracles 3 and 4 in high tier.3 has got some good intrigue and twists in the story, but systems wise feels archaic and more like a NES RPG than a SNES one.4 fixes up the visuals and mechanics, but since they blew their writing load with 3 the plot feels stale comparatively. Worse execution of several similar story beats. They really would have been better off if they could have made one game with the combine strengths of the two instead of two games with clear flaws. Also surprised you put Far East of Eden Zero and Monstania that low. I get it with Star Ocean 1 thoughAnyway, I'm noticing the absence of Lufia 2. You should get on that.
>>3918483>more like a NES RPG than a SNES one.Well that must be why I love them. Also I think greek mythology lends itself really well to JRPGs>Far East of Eden ZeroI found it to be an absolute bore from start to finish. Combat was especially braindead and everything felt bland and not even the technically good graphics entertained me.Monstania could have been cool but the game is basically over before it starts, they had an interesting combat system but in the end the fights feel basic for the most part, a real wasted opportunity.>Lufia seriesYeah I've considered it, it's on my list
>>3918301not bad but imo Illusion of Gaia should be much higher, its themes and narrative were way ahead of the rest and it looks amazing. It doesn't have any weak points + has a great strong point, it being right next to Secret of Evermore rubs me the wrong way.
>>3918491>>3918483To be fair my playthrough of Evermore was like 18 years ago and I only have vague memories of it, but I remember enjoying the dungeons and the dog
>>3918486>Lufia *series*Lufia 1 about to become your new lowest ranked gameIn all fairness it will probably end up next to BoF1. I feel like the kinds of bullshit that gets in the way of progressing the plot is similar in both games.
Secret of Mana is such a weird game. It's ranked pretty accurately in the list. It's like the game is both genius, with a killer OST, the idea of 3 player simultaneously real-time flowing RPG (too many mistake the game as a full action RPG that should behave closer to Zelda, but that's not really what it is, it's just a seamless RPG that uses a constant ATB meter) is amazing especially if you compare what other games were like at the time, but also it's garbage that stinks and you can smell that stink if you just sit and play it today.I think I could fix SoM if I just did the following>slightly slowed down character movement>made the 100% meter more prominent to give players a better impression to wait their turn>removed one of the two ring menu buttons and assigned it as a spell-cast button that activated spells in real-time without any pausing>gave characters a 3 attack / 3 spell list that they pick from on the fly by holding either L, R, or no additional button while pressing the attack/spellcast buttons. the attacks could be with different weapons, too>made the 100% meter recharge variable based on the attack used>fixed the AI for when you can't co-op

Why Secret of Mana on high tier while Seiken Densetsu 3 on mid? Also is og Metal Max 2 worth playing over the DS remake
>>3919269SD3 just made combat a lot worse, and while graphics and musics are technically great they don't have the soul of SoM. I thought the story was kind of a mess too, goes in every direction but underdevelops everything unless you replay the game with various characters (from what I understand).>is og Metal Max 2 worth playing over the DS remakeThe remake feels like it's designed for people who already know the original. At least in terms of story, everything that made the original is just there like it's expected to be there but instead the remake focuses on all the new unrelated side stories instead. Hell, you're not even obligated to use the 3 original cast members. In terms of balancing and gameplay mechanics the original is somewhat in between the first game and Returns, while the remake is "3 but with some QoLs"In terms of atmosphere, the remakes feels very wacky, while the original has a unique vibe that I'd qualify as being in between post apocalyptic despair and comfyness. It's quite a unique vibe that drew me in, it's like imagine you're 50-100 years after the events of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and people have started to settle back in the world and live their lives. The remake doesn't give off the same vibes at all imoOn my first play I wasn't actually that impressed but then I couldn't stop thinking about the game and I had to replay it (multiple times) and that's how I knew I loved it
>>3918301try out shadowrun. i think the genesis version is supposed to be better, but i really loved how unique the snes version was
>>3918301my brother in christ, you need to play Lufia 2!
GO PLAY LUFIA 2 NOW
Lufia 2 is very mid, chill out dudes
>>3920378>>3919480>>3918483Okay, fine. Does feeding monsters the equipment they want do anything other than grow faster?
>>3920444You don't like snes jrpgs then
>>3920467No, it just gives their growth a larger boostand the bonus effect is still based on the quality of the item. They'll sometimes ask for low tier items that they'll receive 0 growth from even though they asked for it.As you feed them stuff that gives a lot of growth, they become pickier eaters and you need to feed them a couple bad items to bring the accepted quality bar back down.
>>3918301Terranigma would top my list. Absolutely love that game.
>>3918301Where's rudras?
>>3918471Damn, soe is one of the best games ever. Strange.
>>3920467I don't even pay attention to what they want. I just buy like 50 of the cheapest store-bought items that gives one sliver of progress, and stuff them full of that.
>>3920444It's better than Chrono Trigger.
>>3920804In Good Tier
>>3918301>earthbound lower than secret of manacongrats on your mental illness
earthbound is #1 and dq3 remake is #2. any other "opinion" is irrelevant and gay.
>>3920805It's really not, did you play it recently?
>>3920826TRUKE
>>3920826Nah
>>3918471Illusion of Gaia is my favorite in all ways, but the first two (or three if you count Actraiser) are just so snappy. They're still of that older era where they're mostly games with odd themes and stories put on them. And so, I think they're easier to go back to.Terranigma is great, but it's a much bigger game and much more drawn out because of it. imo
Bro play 7th Saga WTFBrain Lord is fun too.Dual Orb II is worth trying.Super Mario RPGTales of Phantasia if you like that.
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/snes/category/48-role-playingThere is a comprehensive list of RPGs on SNES.
>>3921851missing some
>>3921855It seems like they tried to purposefully omit SRPGs. Obvious stuff like Fire Emblem being missing is the biggest indicator that it's on purposeI'm not sure *why* those would be omitted though. Especially stuff like Energy Breaker or Treasure Hunter G that have normal RPG town/dungeon content. And they even failed to cut them all anyway because I still see Monstania, as well as SRPG adjacent stuff like Dark Half or Uncharted Waters on the list.
>>3921840Yeah that's pretty much the same reason for me.First time I felt like obviously the games just got better and better, but replaying them later I wasn't so sure anymore.I just don't know if I value the broader scope of Terranigma, or the contained but more perfected tighter experience of Gaia more.
Actually I'm really enjoying Lufia (1) because of its really tight balancing. I've found myself just about out of MP by the end of several dungeons in a row and in some encounters making a wrong decision can be costly. It's obviously all very inspired by DQ2 but that happens to be one of my favourite DQs.One nice thing about Lufia 1 that it takes from DQ2 is that there is some amount of randomization to the encounters (enemy types, numbers, grouping etc), which keeps making combat engaging and less repetitive. Very few JRPGs do this actually so it's nice.
>>3922233you haven't gotten up to the point where the balancing falls apart and the direction and plot disappears. And yeah Lufia games basically copied their homework from DQ2/3 back from the Famicom days so I can see that if you really love those games you'll like Lufia more
>>3921840Illusion of Gaia is also my favorite. I agree with this youtube guy. I think it's actually one of the best things on the SNEShttps://youtu.be/sQPfUohMMqYIn retrospective review, I think it's interesting that Terranigma / Illusion of Gaia didn't become the new staple standard for RPGs back in 1994. I think Illusion of Gaia might have just went over most gamer's heads at the time.
>>3922235>the point where the balancing falls apart I don't really wanna know yet, but I have a feeling that the way turn order/agility works could easily break the game
That difficulty spike when you cross the lake and reach Dowaine holy shit. Those Sage enemies can casually do a spell that deals 90% of both my characters HP and another that drains half their MP. And they don't come alone.
>>3918301>CT in god tier, let alone above any MM>SoM above SD3>TM0 in low tier below things like both BoF games or SMT>That atrocious slog that is Terranigma on "Great"
>>3923502That's because the lolcalizers fucked with the game balance.
>>3921849Brain Lord was pretty decent until the final dungeon. Ill definitely never play it again for that reason alone.>>3923502I beat 7th Saga once just to sort of prove to myself that I could after knowing how hard the game was damaged by the localization process. I only ever beat it because one of the partners held the final rune and gave me the choice of recruiting him instead of fighting him. I could not get even remotely close to beating the duel. The final boss was hard, but much more manageable than a duel that late in the game.
How's the spiritual sequel to 7th Saga?
>>3922233for a mere DQ2 clone it's crazy high-tech. In-game tooltips for spells and items for example
>>3924738Decent. Couple of the story arcs feel a little bogged down with padding (Kid's world, the fucking spiral staircase room in the generic medieval fantasy world, probably other stuff I'm not remembering right now)but separating the content into arcs at all, and having them be fairly conceptually different from each other, is a positive for staying engaging.OST is underrated
So I've beaten 7th Saga (US version). I played using Kamil and Valsu and overall I really enjoyed it and I thought the game was very balanced, except for the final area where I arrived at lvl 40 and I had to grind to lvl 50 for the final two short dungeons. The only duel I had to do for the Sky Ark wasn't hard either Then I tried getting into Laplace no Ma but I didn't like it at all. The combat is really bad between high miss rate and the high dmg randomization, that and the presentation lacks impact. The environments and puzzle solving was doing nothing to me either and it takes forever to lvl up stats and even after lvling up I barely felt any difference, I don't think I'll continue this playthrough and I opted for Mystick Ark instead
>>3923502>>3921849I wouldn't say 7th Saga is even in the top 5 most difficult SNES/SFC RPGs, the localized version's balance is just fucked up and as the game is extremely simple mechanically, there's not much besides grinding in this game. From what I have played, Romancing SaGa 2, Eye of the Beholder, and the Wizardry Gaiden games are all much harder
>>3918301>excluding the FF/DQ series.Why would you exclude FF 4-5-6?
>>3928218Because everyone's already talked about them to death and if I included them in the OP's image the entire discussion would be centered around DQ and FF.
>>3918301I liked G.O.D and Der Langriser
