What are your thoughts on the Star Ocean series?
>>
>>3919331
It has the hottest male protags of any JRPG series
>>
Memorable and endearing, not perfect, but worth playing. 1 was a peak snes era rpg, 2 was the best and had a cozyness that almost no other rpg can match, 3 was a mess and the beginning of the mediocrity. 4 and 5 i enjoyed but knew they were both close to being bad games. And gave up after that. The music is amazing in all of them. Blue sphere is neat

And rpg fan not having played 1 and 2 os doing a disservice. Walking up to Arlia village that first time never stops making me feel emotional
>>
>>3919331
I've never seen such a 4.5/10 series get hard carried by one game.
>>
>>3919331
The MC hair color pattern it has is hilarious. Cless from Phantasia split into Ratix and Claude.
>>
>>3919331
Shaping to be a good series but then it starts to go downhill from 3. Not even the waifus can make 4-6 passes as 6/10 jarpigs for me that the gachashit ended up slightly better in a way
>>
None of the games are a masterpiece, and in fact they mostly all have shitty plots and characters.
But the are fun as hell to play.

4 is the best one btw.
>>
>>3919331
Divine Force is jank kino.
>>
Are any of them actual sci fi games or do they all bait and switch you into generic fantaslop?
>>
>>3919331
2 and 4 are some of my all time favorite jrpgs. The other games are pretty good too
>>
I really enjoyed 2 and didnt fully understand the circlejerking that 3 has received since its creation
>>
3 is the "till the end of time" one, right? it was ok. i remember it had some sick guitar solos in the OST. i dont remember much past that tho lol. i liked the SNES one better. never played 2
>>
>>3920232
2 is easily the best one.
>>
Is the undub for Second Story any good? I heard that PS1 tri-Ace games are really finicky because of the way they were programmed and undubs make them crash heavy but didn't try them yet
>>
>>3920212
>didnt fully understand the circlejerking that 3 has received since its creation
it's one of the ps2-babbies first jrpgs. it was either this or Wild Arms 3.
>>
>>3919331
Tales is McDonalds, Star Ocean is Perry's
>>
>>3920068
nope

Not enough black people. Pass.
>>
>>3919331
I like em, warts and all. Albel/Fayt best ending.
>>
2 is easily the best, probably because it was Final Fantasy, but Star Trek to book end. Japan loves to copy popular media from the US. 1 and 2 come off the wake of success of Star Trek The Nest Generation. The inspiration there is incredibly obvious if you're familiar.

3 sheds a lot of the Star Trek tones. Only letting it pop up really strongly, for it to be quickly dismissed.

4 leans back into it, but is a prequel and then a very typical JRPG.

5 goes back to the Star Trek like framing, idk 6
>>
>>3919331
Despite the cool aesthetics the games are piss easy and therefore not much value in playing.
>>
4's shitty exploration stopped me from continuing the series.
>>
>>3919331
There are way too many missables in TriAce games. It's the biggest thing holding any of them back.
>>
>>3919331
excellent music, only redeeming quality in any of them
all of them have shit gameplay, bad stories despite the novel idea of mixing scifi and standard fantasy, are stuffed full of references to themselves like you should know or give a fuck about their world or the developers themselves, and every single one has a terrible final act which ends them on a bad note

They piss me off because:
>cool title
>sci-fi jrpg
>look inside
>grassy forests, fighting animals with regular non-laser swords with your childhood crush with a bow

I liked the first one's story enough (didn't beat it), but I thought it was more Star Trek than anything else. Thought that was neat. The modern ones are super lame and I don't know how they keep getting to make these.
>>
>>3920394
Wild Arms 3 is the best Wild Arms game, granted.
>>
>>3919331
I love SO3. Most fun battle system, fantastic post game dungeons, god tier music, memorable companions.
>>
>>3919331
Fascinating premise, that is utterly botched in execution. Maybe I've only played the shit ones, but being swindled into "Here is a science fiction, space themed RPG, in which you spend 99.9% of the game in the most generic fantasy setting imaginable" even once has made me pretty fucking cagey about the rest.
>>
>>3919331
>>3930682
hideous animoo gooner slop.
>>
>>3930844
This is the plot to 1, 2 and 3. 2 at least it's only 70% of the time.
>>3919539
Pretty accurate. 2 is great, the rest are mid to boring even. I'm shocked it keeps getting made. It blows me away they had a good thing going with 2, which got a gameboy spin off, but then 3, 4 ect none of them touch 2. They just use the name to sell games that are vaguely similar like a mountain dew flavor.
>>
Only played SO1 and 2 and it's just Tales but made by 3 retarded ex-janitors from Wolf Team who had good reasons for leaving the team(being retarded).
No reason to play either when they are inferior to even bad Tales games in every way and the same is probably true for later games.
>>
>>3919331
I've played star ocean 2 years ago, should I play remake?
>>
>>3919331
mmmmm I never beat the first one on the snes to the point where I defeated the bonus dungeon; that was super tough. Thinking of revisiting it, and just choosing the worst characters possible to make it extra challenging.

Who should I go with?

BTW my favourite thing about the first game, is that if you wait for a long enough time, you can get a skill that when you level up, saves you points for investing in future skills.
>>
>>3919539
This exactly describes my feelings about the Tales of franchise.

As for Star Ocean:
I like the first and the remake of the second Star Ocean.
I played those several times already.
3 and 4 are a pretty mixed bag and I don't know any of the new titles.
>>
Isn't SO6 supposed to be a solid midrange game?

There is certainly room in the world to enjoy a good 7/10
>>
>>3931004
No matter how much you screech about "gooners" when you see an attractive girl in a game women won't reward you with sex for it.
>>
>>3920069
4s a great game. It got a ton of hate when it first came out because console war shit creating lots of sour grapes, but I'm glad after a couple ports general opinion is coming around on it. Mass effect being big at the time helped 4 alot and it's the only game in the series that feels like an actual Sci fi adventure instead of a fantasy rpg with some Sci fi bobs and bits. And all the characters are incredibly fun to play as its battle system is still unmatched for an arpg.
>>
>>3934832
Quite the opposite.
Being a gooner got me a girlfriend. She, too, is a gooner.
>>
>>3928142
>The inspiration there is incredibly obvious if you're familiar.

I'd argue it goes past inspiration to straight up rip off. The Federation is blantantly taken from star trek's Federation with a similar backstory and the planet with a timegate on it is taken straight from the City on the Edge of Forever one of Star Trek's most popular and well known episodes. Ronyx is basically Kirk
>>
>>3933388
The games branch off more from Tales after 2, in part because Tales was taking off and they didn't want to get sued but it's still not much better.
>>
Decided to check out Second Story R on a whim and I feel silly for not giving this series a glance when I was really into JRPGs. It's pretty good.

>>3935274
The intro movie had me actually laughing out loud at the music. It's as if the composer was trying to find the *exact line* something crosses from inspiration to plagiarization, and he just barely squeaks under it
>>
Star Ocean 5 poisoned our water supply, burned our crops and delivered a plague unto our houses
>>
>>3920398
What even is this analogy? Tales is way too niche to be compared to cheap, poor-quality food eaten by legions of Amerifats. What the fuck is Perry's?
>>
been emulating SO3 for 5 hours now. Cranked up internal resolution and HD texture pack makes it look quite nice; great remastered feel. Even the sounds and OST are great. Coming from tri-ace's VP games, it is nice to listen to SO3's sfx and be reminded of VP2.
But damn, is it a love-hate relationship with the battle-system. Even playing on normal, some battles were just raping me. At one point i almost dropped the game. Then i checked out some guides and youtube videos about how others play and i think i have been playing the game wrong. It is all about setting up your skills to cancel each other properly and then just try not to get hit and charge up your fury to keep spam and cancel skills. Now i got 8 CP and can finally cancel my first sword skill and it does look impressive and makes me have fun overall. It was not a comfy journey getting to this point, though. Needlessly unintuitive. But i like the story so far and Sophia has a huge rack. I know she only joins at the beginning of disc 2, so i guess i still have to wait until i can finally have some romance with her.
>>
>>3934983
it didnt help that SO4 back then came out on the 360 and with only cringe english dub first. the damage was done. completely missed the target audience and xboxnormalfags shat on it.
>>
>>3935108
So when you both climax, it’s like an anime hentai?
>>
>>3941415
>It is all about setting up your skills to cancel each other properly
Now you see the light. Prepare to get the audio of SIDE KICK get permanently engraved into your soul.
SO3 is probably the most fun "game the system" SO game and is pretty up there overall in the JRPG pantheon. Fury, cancelling and MP management is an unironic filter for tons of brainlets, but once you figure it out the game is plenty fun. And you unlock even more retarded options and gimmicks once you start gaming the item creation system as per SO fare. But I'd say 3 is also the SO game where item creation has drastic game changing effects as opposed to just bigger numbers.

And say what you will about SO3 and its detractors, but SO3 is also one of those JRPGs that had the most side content and post-game stuff to dick around with. I still hold it to this day that SO3 was the cream of the crop of Tri-Ace's prime alongside Valkyrie Profile 1.
>>
>>3941781
i spent like an actual hour in the mines fighting against skeletons just to learn how to cancel blade fury into blady fury consistently. my first time canceling three furies was a rush. this dude is my senpai. probably a little kid back then kek
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FNpVu7m1E4
>the most side content and post-game stuff
nice. i love that kind of shit. oh, is recruiting Mel and the brown dancer loli pretty much the best choices?
>>
>unlock side kick
>you can chain it endlessly and without effort
blade of fury taught me well. side kick is fucking broken, the damage is insane
>>
>>3941814
>Mel
You mean Nel? Yeah, she's pretty good. One of the best "honest" characters (i.e. not lol lmao even completely break the game tier but still very comfortable and viable to play) in the game. Fairly certain brown loli is in that aforementioned lol lmao even busted tier though. But she needs some setup to really get rolling.
But really, just think with your dick. Nel is one of the top tier female/popular characters in SO as a whole. That gacha sure as hell got some mileage out of her. Best heroine ending with Fayt too.

And waifufagging aside, you can't really go wrong with any characters that's not the grandpa or shota. I think the general tier list goes (obfuscating some names to avoid spoilers):

Lol lmao even busted:
Fayt
Cliff
Gun main heroine
Brown loli

Honest:
Sophia (she will probably be your main support healslut if you're not going full in on an all attack or item reliant team)
Other fist user
Nel
Edgelord

Meh:
Shota

Actually lol lmao even:
Grandpa
>>
>>3941957
>Gun main heroine
Oh, that is Maria, i assume? Fuck. All girls are great. It will be hard whose ending to choose for the first time..
>>
>>3941957
Funny thing about Nel is that despite early game setting her up to be a battlemage kind of character, her magic really falls off mid-game and she's much better suited to be the close range speedster ninja that chains/combo cancels like a motherfucker. And she does that job really well too.

Ironically, Fayt is one of the best meta/late game mages. Explosion is pretty good for AOE combo racking and hitstun. I mean, if you're manually controlling Fayt, you'd be side kick cancelling like a crack addict, but an AI controlled mage Fayt is one of the better supports you can have. Helps that he's built like a tank and can handle himself just fine if the enemy closes in on him.
>>
>got over 20k fol
>contemplating if i should get the holy sword
>doing so will completely break the game it feels
i should've downloaded some savestates and started on the highest difficulty..
>>
>so3
>get 95% battle trophy savestate
>new game, universe mode
>all costumes unlocked
>decent difficulty
the beginning was quite challenging but the moment Cliff got his aoe hammer attack i just controlled him and decimated everything until Fayt got his side kick. been really enjoying the game; its been a few years since i last looked forward to play something all day. also
>nel has visible panties 24/7
fuck modern gaming

Haven't played 1.

2 was duller than I thought it would be considering it's the series' highest standard. Just there.

Haven't played 3.

4 was the opposite of 2 for me, where I thought the game looked like shit but it was surprisingly enthralling, despite another weak premise for events happening. I think the cast was better.

Haven't played 5.

Tried playing 6 a couple years back but it ran like shit, should probably go back to it.
>>

this had best SO artwork but it's dead gacha shit.
>>
>>3928144
you know they have difficulty modes right. I gaurantee universe mode on so2 (ps1 version not the tranny demake) would rape your asshole
>>
>>3934817
what's the tales of game thats carrying the series in your eyes? for me, it's eternia. thats a 9/10 easy but every other game Ive tried in the series bores me.
>>
>>3941415
yeah its incredibly fucking stupid how the game never explains to you the cancel system anywhere except an enormous tutorial in the first 5 minutes that no one is going to spend 2 hours going through. resonance of fates has the same problem but on steroids. but yeah once you fully grasp the combo system and everything else so3 combat is incredible, it will only get better the further you get.

and then so4 has an even better battle system which is honestly the best of any game like this. unfortunately the characters and story in that game are...... lacking, compared to 2 and 3.
>>
I am literally going to have to buy a new pc or a console ONLY to play star ocean 6 and it pisses me off to no end. my laptop can handle sekiro and elden ring in 1080p with no framedrops but so6 will make it shit its pants after 30 minutes. so aggravating I thought my laptop would be able to handle the handful of modern games I wanted to play on low settings at least but nah I guess so6 has fucking spaghetti jeetcode.
>>
1 is alright, 2 is fantastic, 2 Blue Sphere is also great, 3 shits itself, 4 is dogshit, 5 is boring as fuck, and 6 is pretty alright for the $15 I paid for it at the time.

That's it. Now on remakes the remake of 1 is pretty great. The remake of 2, not the PSP version, is the gold standard of what you should do for a remake.

Also thankfully all of them are kinda fun to break but that's on Tri-ace being a good dev team.
>>
>>3943184
Please dont see this as an insult to your intelligence but you did compile shaders, right?

yeah that was the first thing I did :/

>>3943226
There are still very lewd chinese games. Azur Lane is chinese, for example. I dont know why you feel like this is an sports game and you have to pick a team and insult others like that. Guess some men really are too emotional for their own good.
>>
>>3943230
girls frontline 2 has pettanko characters flashing their pantsu 24/7 as well.
