what are some good older CRPGs that hold up well? I'm looking for strong abilities to be able to roleplay ; good writing ; good characters and atmosphere ; strong ability to roleplay my character and make my own choices, etc. I don't care about graphics and in fact the "less" graphics the better, as I can use my imagination to fill in. Right now I am thinking of replaying Morrowind for the upteenth time, playing Daggerfall for the first time, and looking into the Ultima games.

I want to name Spiderweb games..but they are pretty dog shit to play. But the writing is simple (and for the most part) doesn't go into dumb unncessary yapping, though they have a lot of yapping:
>Geneforge
Unique atmosphere and setting, kind of neat story
>Avadon
Retarded
>Avernum
Neat and interesting setting and story
But aside from the first Geneforge game, you are not really given much choice.
>CDDA
Or Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead..if post apoc zombie setting is fine with you, then this is a solid one. No story, no writing though, save whatever legend you pave for yourself

Because deviantart-tier "concept artists" are a lot cheaper and produce slop faster

Right? All about fast cash and little work.

Fallout.
Hinges on you being okay with that type of setting instead of medieval fantasy though.

Baldur's Gate isn't really strong in that regard, though I do love it.

Ultima is pretty ass (aside from Underworld which wasn't even made by the main company). I have no idea why boomers go nuts for it. U7 has some shit mechanics that were designed to get you to call a help-line in order to progress. The combat has no strategy & character progression is pretty non-existent. The oldest CRPG I've ever played that I enjoyed & finished was FO1. The first "modern" RPGs are probably BG1 & 2. They have a great story, interesting combat, and decent itemization.

yeah Geneforge 1 and 2, or even better Nethergate: Resurrection sound like what OP needs

This one is really cool, but I was consistently having the worst game breaking bugs happen. Inventory locking up, unable to interact with anything, even the cutscene at the start with the npc arena fight wouldn't start so I couldn't leave the opening gates.
Save often is my advice if you play this. I managed to get out into a the big desert area. It's been so long since I played I'm going to have a hard time remembering what to do unfortunately.

Weird, I replayed it a few years ago and barely had any issues. Were you playing version 1.1? I imagine the steam and GOG versions come prepatched.

I found the sequel, Wake of the Ravager, much buggier, and not as good.

None of you fags have ever played Deathlord or centauri alliance.

To this day, I've never managed to kill a dragon.
Probably because I played it blind without the manual, but that makes it feel more like an epic journey.

It's mostly from a historical and nostalgic place, ultima continuously reinvented itself, from the early games being trash but influential trash, from 4 & 5 having the first real serious look into a story I can think of. 6 & 7 being the first real simulated worlds with a modicom of fidelity you can claim to go main stream, sure it doesnt have physics like that but objects being manipulated the way they were in those games was groundbreaking. Ultima's first games inspired the jrpg, 6 & 7 are key inspirations for larian's games, much more so than any infinity engine title. The return to britannia does become a neat little start to the series as you go through them has got to be said

Solar Winds was a lot of fun and I never see anyone talk about it.

I liked Might and Magic Worlds of Xeen I guess.

Consoles kinda had better rpgs in the old days. I mean there's always Ultima but it is clunky to a degree that I don't think modern players would tolerate.

The best use of RPG mechanics in computer games back them was strategy simulators like XCom and Jagged Alliance.

There were a lot of fun cheap dungeon crawlers like Moraffs World and Bobs Virtual Dungeon but they're pretty crude
