Riviera looks like peak “friendship is magic” dialogue-spam snoozefest JRPG Atlusslop, which is why I’m 12 hours deep and actually having fun.JRPGs bore me. I hate menus and I don’t grind. I don’t care about anime-trauma bonding. So why does limited items + VN pacing + weeb aesthetics hit so good this time? Explain. Also, recommend more JRPGS that will make me hate the genre less.
>I don't like being spammed with dialogue>Which is why I like Rivieralmao. Anyway just go play a dungeon crawler like Etrian Odyssey.
>>3925281Grinding isn’t really a thing you have to do outside of super old games. It’s not really a part of the genre, it’s just memetic to it. That’s not to say you can’t grind, but that’s really just a way for stupid people/journos/Children to still see the story when they can’t interact meaningfully with mechanics
>>3925281I wish the angel bro didn't die
>>3925281>why does limited items + VN pacing + weeb aesthetics hit so good this time? The VN pacing is constantly moving you forward, feels like there's no downtime, dialogue is snappy and to the point. The small level design makes it feel like you never wander around aimlessly looking for the next "event trigger". The combat makes it feel like every choice matters, if you're playing on the original or hard difficulty anyway. It's a TIGHT game like it's characters
how to get good at that game it's hard af
>>3925281Limited resources and constant forward momentum are both good and most RPG devs won't implement either.
If I'm looking to emulate this game again, which is better, PSP or GBA?>>3925858I remember getting stuck against a hard encounter because I ran out of weapon items yet my inventory was filled with the extremely situational or useless armor and support items and I rarely opened chests because of that, (and also because I was afraid of traps, the QTEs were actually kinda difficult from when I last played) which is an issue because most of your weapon items will come from chests. The entire game is based around item/inventory management so you have to make sure you regularly toss items that aren't effectual or are close to being depleted so you can keep making room for items that actually matter. If you fill up your inventory in the tutorial you will actually screw yourself over because the game won't even give you the chance to make space for the basic starting weapons when Fia and Lina join. So always be tossing those basic mob drops.I feel like the game would've benefited from some sort of economy where you could trade all your useless junk items for worthwhile ones, but that might make the game too easy especially if you could hold currency. This does give me ideas for an consumables-based RPG that's like a spiritual successor to Riviera but also balanced around trading and crafting.
>>3928949Probably the Steam versionthe pc version of yggdra union (from the same company) has a lot of life improvementsBut to deal with the gacha item boxes you might want save states, the psp version was fine
>>3928949Get for Switch, or emulate it for switch. It's got lots of cool features.
>>3929002>99-item inventoryYou didn't beat the game
>>3929004so true, I'm playing it on original mode though not 99-item mode
>>3925281why didn't more games copy Riviera's style/mechanics? there's like no down time
>>3925281I haven't thought about this game in years. I had to PSP version and I loved it, I should give it a replay. It reminded me of Persona except minus everything I don't like about persona. It had tactical turnbased combat, character building scenes, light VN elements BUT without the annoying grinding or slog endless encounters and a sense of restraint when it came to dialogue (the endless WORDSWORDSWORDS of Persona gets old really fast.)
how's Yggdra Union and the other games in the series? Do they hold up well?
>>3925281>>3929023some PSP games are like thisits kind of like Japan went on a crazy "cut off the fat" during the early mobile phase and that resulted in a lot of DRPGs and stuff like FF 13It has its pros and cons, I don't think it's inherently better
>>3929309Yggdra Union is my favorite of their games, and a solid tactical RPG in general.Knights in the Nightmare is such a unique game that it's hard to rate. Personally, I ended up not being especially fond of it, but it was an interesting experience.Gungnir has great mechanics, but is a bit weak otherwise. In particular, it has some of the least satisfying endings I've ever encountered. I still enjoyed it, and I still reccomend it if you really like the mechanics of games like Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics.
>>3925281I learned about this game by flipping through the official guide in a London Drugs over 20 years ago, and fell so in love with Cierra's design that I kept the game in the back of my mind ever since. I finally played it this last year and was very impressed, it's unique and engaging and I liked basically all the characters.I still have a thing for witchy girls, too.
>>3925281Riviera brings me endless happiness just by thinking about it, no other game has given me this kind of warmth.I really REALLY love it, seriously
>>3925281>Atlusslop>Atlus>im having fun.you're a schizo AI bot. go back to russia.
>>3932202Genuinely what the fuck are you on
>>3925281It's just a gimmicky harem dungeon crawler.
>>3934078>a challenging harem dungeon crawlerexactly what Im looking for
>>3932202OP is retarded but it isn't even Atlus. They're the publishers, not developers. It's Sting. The same people who thought it'd be brilliant to combine danmaku, touch controls, and Tic-Tac-Toe
>>3934115>>3934115show me where OP said Atlus is the dev. I'll wait.
>>3925281Dept Heaven games are one of the few games that I think should be completely dismissed just by appearances alone.
>>3933919SERENE
>>3934182Why are you gay?
>>3934224Because I apparently don't like generic weeb shit with a thick coat of pretentiousness.
What the heck is pretentious about ribiera
>>3925281>Also, recommend more JRPGS that will make me hate the genre lessAnon, have you tried playing 1997's "Final Fantasy 7" for the Playstation? It achieved widespread popularity and fame, even among non-JRPG fans.
>>3934391I feel like no one who uses that word here actually knows what it means.
>>3934458I think it might be a bot, that sentence was too dum to be uttered by an actual human
>>3934594and spelt the name of the game wrong
>>3934612SHUDDUPI WON'T BE SWAYED BY YOUR WORDS, IDIOT.
>>3934594>dum>>3934612>spelt
>>3934151>AtlusslopRetard. If you can't actually express your complaints don't open your mouth.
>>3928949Depends on whether you like the PSP sprites (the same that the PC remaster has). Personally, I like the PSP sprites much less than the GBA/Wonderswan sprites. However, the PSP/PC releases are fully voiced and probably play better.
Still having fun with this on me Switch. It's a great little game with tons of soul and charm. ALSO more importantly, its not piss easy like most rpgs are.I actually have to THINK and plan my fights, and I've lost quite a few times, had several game over screens (again super rare in rpgs!). I'm playing the original mode/hard option, not the unlimited 99 items easy option
>>3940927Is that official?
>>3941033Pretty sure it's not. Some fan artists can mimic the Dept. Heaven style pretty well.
>>3925281>Be peak mid-2000s anime, when good, dubbed anime games were a novelty>GBA game comes out, has limited voice acting>Anime-ass anime story>Anime-ass visual design>Peak anime-ass musicI don't know why someone today would love it, but back then it was rivers in the desert. The first time an EX attack played>That sound>The screen wipe>The anime-ass hero image>That anime-ass catchphrase>The fucking flavor text and the way it comes onto the screenFuck. So good. Hooked immediately. If you were the kind of person who knew what an Obari pose was this shit was like a mental nut every time it happened.
>>3941179Say "anime-ass" one more time.
>>3941190
>>3929004>Beat the original several times with the 15 item inventory>Try 99 item mode>Feel comically OP because you basically always have access to everything for stat grinding
I started the PSP version and that has to have been without question the most insulting tutorial I think I've ever seen in a game.>Use health potions to heal. Press these buttons. Continue to breath oxygen.
